that is why it's been raging for hours. the chief there says the hydrants are frozen. they get one to open up and they start the water supply, they are running out and not having enough water to control it and it continues to burn. one building in the complex near collapse. firefighters are worried about it jumps to nearby buildings. not just statistics and politics. it is reality. we were warned of this risk just last night and now here it is. and we hope it is not a sign of more to come. people in texas, oklahoma, surrounding states with the cold snap, they are suffering too much already, and now for too long. the latest count, 13 million texans with without water for days. we're hearing scary stories of decem desperation. our first guest tonight is boiling snow for h 2o and that comes with variables why kit go bad fast. as it continues, you have bad weather, bad infrastructure, and bad leadership. governor abbott started blaming green energy. he knew that texas relies primarily on nonrenewable energy. and he says people deserve answers. give it to them. you were warned about in infrastructure. you know you cannot borrow power from other states. you have your own grid to avoid federal regulation. we see a storm of strong and wrong. from former secretary of energy and former governor of texas rick perry. i said the first part slowly. because put it in your mind. texans would be without electricity for longer than three days to keep the federal government of their business. perry was in charge of what he wants people to be suspicious of from the federal government. you are saying you were shady? he was the head of the federal department of energy. perry also falsely blames frozen wind turbines for the mass outages in. that is ze demonstrably false. they wither not winter sized. that is the problem. why forward a farce? that takes us to a farce in full effect. flying ted cruz, he has been totally shamed. exposed for going full trump. that means lying about going to mexico to avoid the cold and to avoid the duty to the texans he serves and denying what he obviously did, despite tonight being outed by his wife. now information. first, he said he was just a chaperone. school is canceled for the week. girls want to take a trip with friends. i flew down with them. like he was going down to come back. then, the text from the wife come out. busted. "the new york times" got ahold of the messages sent by heidi cruz to friends and they reveal they were planning a trip. they pushed it off to sunday because their home was quote freezing. they even invited others to join them at the ritz. i got say, damn, what does it tell you when even his friends go bad on ted cruz, so what happens next? we see flying ted scrambling back to texas and with a new spin. >> the plan had been to stay through the weekend with the family. that was the plan. i started having second thoughts almost the moment i sat down on the plan but i also have a responsibility i take seriously of fighting for the state of texas. it was obviously a mistake in hindsight. i wouldn't have done it. >> he must be worried thosugh. he went running back to fox tonight to get a pass. i won't every who he is going to blame? the media, or the left. next time, instead of reading dr. seuss, maybe flying ted should read sir walter scott. especially this passage, oh what a tangled web we receive when first we practice to deceive. senator yuzcruz will be all rig. you kr seen the ceiling fan draped with icicles. it was taken by thomas black of dallas. he and his girlfriend are running out of food. they are running out of water. they are boiling snow to get water now. good to see you. how are you doing tonight? >> how's it going, chris? you know, as of now, we're managing. you know, the gravity of the situation becomes more apparent by the minute. we are boiling bathtub water, and i knew to do it because i had a pouring of outreach, giving me tips how to weather it out. and without them, as a texan, we're just not inherently prepared for something like this. >> if you have the ability to get on the internet and you're going to boil snow. google it, they have different things you have to look out for. you shouldn't have to do it in the first place. this iconic photo, i'm sure never was your intention. how do the water and the icicles get on the fan? >> again, lack of preparedness. there are pipes busting. the infrastructure is not prepared. we could have been warned by it. we could have been prepared. we could have had the energy structure. >> this is all from your apartment building. what triggered you to start documents the experience and put it on social media? >> i think that any texan, every texan's blood should be boiling this is the reality we're living in right now. i'm thankful this is starting to catch on to everyone around the world, seeing that we are in a bad situation and it's getting worse. here, let me tell you something that might be a little bit pg-13. we're having to use the bathroom multiple times before flushing. who should have to do that here? >> what are you hearing from other people in the building? how bad is it for people when they didn't have heat? i know there is power restored. what are you hearing? >> a lot of the stories are, you know, people are having to migrate to other neighbor's houses that do have power. and with covid being a thing that is just another cause for concern, grouping people up together that are from different house holds. in familiar, down starps is where the flooding is bad. i'm sure they have to evacuate. >> we keep talking about things are getting better and i think it's a little insensitive how bad it still is. you are still together. you are so cool. you communicate so well. but this has got to be really bad still even with the power. no? >> absolutely. again, i can put the face on a positivity and try to get this. because i think that, you know, as texan, as americans, we can get through things. but we do need help. you know, and that help should be coming from the top. it shouldn't have to be at the local level. i have me and organizations, banding together to take care of the local community. we shouldn't have to be doing that. that is just the truth. >> what is the night like for you after we get off? >> really, just again, just playing it by ear. you know, we have been woken up numerous times throughout the night. the past three days from alarms. alarms, i never heard that sound before. and just being ready to be on our game. do we need to put things together and get out of the building? it's an uncertain reality we are living in here. and i don't know if we can handle the fire here. i do play it cool. it's kind of scary. >> you see what is happening in san antonio. good forbid but if the firefighters have trouble gets access to water, a bad fire can be a catastrophic fire. please, stay in contact. thank you for putting images to the realities. i appreciate you in a time of distress. you know we're a call away. let us know what you need and please stay safe. best to you and the family. >> have a good one. >> thomas black. it's phenomenal to me how together he is. even with power restored, it's a hard way to live, if it didn't have to happen. the firsthand look at the vie s crisis on the haunground, has t with accountability. and judge jenkins, the highest ranking sfishl in dallas county, welcome to prime time. i azssume, judge, you were neve fooled this is a green energy event as the governor wanted to you believe. >> no, this is a completely predictable event. a report issued by the state government and the federal government in 2011 saying this was able to happen. i spoke before the state legislature two years ago saying this was going to happen, and it happened. and it's because governor abbott refused to weatherize or modernize the gas lines as a report from his own legislature told him. when you choose to tell a company they don't have to do something, you are instructing them not to do it. in an effort to get the lowest price for big commercial users, they failed to protect residents from losing power. >> the argument that know, no we don't have enough money to do everything and because we had to spend so much money on the wind turbine infrastructure, we didn't get to use it for the coal and gas and if we had, none of that would have happened. do you accept that? >> this is a deregulated market. they are not using wind energy. companies are building infrastructure based on the specks governor's office gives them. they didn't put weatherization in the specs so they have built a cheaper product so they can sell energy at a higher profit. this is not about the taxpayers building anything. >> now, in terms of looking at this going forward, you are saying that the governor is aware of what is happening. and what we are seeing now is secondary effects in systemic inequality in play. power is not coming back in lower income and minority neighborhoods. why is that? >> i don't know exactly. but what has happened in the past, the older the infrastructure, and the governor has refused to replace it as the reports and the legislature has requested, the older the infrastructure is, the harder it is to circulate, and the older housing is where the most vulnerable populations live. >> right now, they are working with fema, trying to do everything they can. what else is needed and what are you worried about in terms of how this will be handled in the next few days? >> right now, the big problem is drinkable water. 10 million -- that is one third of texans, don't have a safe drinks water source other than bottled water or water they boiled. because the energy going to the water treatment centers failed. fema worked with us quickly. we got generators on water treatment here in dallas and we saved the water supply system. so we are in pretty good shape. some of the other smaumer cities in the county are on boil water notices in. that is a huge concern, and you will have pipes breaking all over texas and you need people who need plumbers. and there are not enough plumbers to go around. >> and the contagent. are you worried about not vaccinating people, and you may have your own homemade variant here of spread. >> well, we're doing everything we can to keep that from happening. we have an operation on vaccinations on sunday. i reached out to the department of defense and the biden administration and asked for a shooter team from the army to come down as soon as the weather clears for them to get here, they will join my team and together we will catch up the vaccines. >> will people will able to bet -- get to you? >> people can get to you. the weather tomorrow will be above freezing for a little bit and well above freezing on saturday. so by the time we start sunday, the roads should be clear. the people getting to us, the second shots, people above the age of 75. so we need the roads to be safe before we can operate. if it's not safe for to you get there, we won't operate. we will get you caught up and get you a shot. >> do you have a supply? has the federal government been able to get you supply in the weather? >> the federal government is shipping a supply directly to dallas county in a partnership with dallas county and the federal government. that supply has not arrived yet. however, we have backlog of supply from those not able to get it out this week. so our army team and also doctors who are taking -- it's their day off sunday, even without the army, we have 61 shooters already from doctors and form cpharmacists who are c in to help us sunday because we -- you know, this community will come together even when the system utterly fails us. >> it is terrible. it's a demonstration why people want to put faith in their government and want it to be responsible and accountable. judge jenkins, please see the program as a platform to let you know what your needs are. we are a phone call away. >> thank you so much, chris. >> god bless and be well. >> the winter blast we are seeing in the south is impacting the pandemic fight. you're seeing vaccination delays in different places. including where we just were this dallas. dr. fauci says things have slowed to a grinding halt in some places. a key member of the biden covid team is here. what is their plan to get back on track, next. e i bought this turtle from stole all of my info. ooh, have you looked on the bright side? >> of course there is a lesson here. remember, we don't keep redundant capacity in vaccines. we are literally putting out every single vaccine we have. in an administration site is closed, we don't want to ship a vaccine. so the best thing to do here is respect the weather, understand it it. not put people in harm eers way and re mind people if they have a second appointment, and it's delayed, no problem. they will get their vaccines and we have to ask everybody in the country to work double time next week. that will mean longer appointment hours, more shipping hours and we will ask everybody to do their part. >> if it's all hands on deck, what do you think of governor bake ore of massachusetts saying he wants the gnational guard to go to kentucky and bring back the next batches? >> we have been talking to govern governor bake ir and others. the problem is, they can only pick up vaccines that are packaged and ready for delivery. we can't get people in the factories right now because the roads are closed to box them. everyone has to wait until the weather returns. and boxing these things is a scientific process. we can't just send anyone in to do it. people have to get on the roads, get in to do it and we can get them to the sites they need to get to. >> how do you know in a vaccine goes bad? if you have 2,000 vaccines without power, how do you keep it as cold as you need to? >> well, the vaccines that are already out there, that are already in the -- out in the field, we are trying to contact folks that hopefully the number of vaccines are getting in people's arms. in places like san diego, they are going to work through whatever backlog they have, and places -- the ones that are in -- that we have control of, they are the ones we can be sure of. and so far this week, there hasn't been a sing le vaccine that spoiled. last week, we shipped 2500 vaccines to a place that had closed and we recovered those. they will be okay. those are the things we have to pay attention to. >> that is something to watch this texas. i hav i have been hearing about something and we used to talk about the systematic inequality, and they get sick, they don't get treated as well, there has been an effort to get vaccines in the areas. but in the areas, isn't the same as into those under served arms. and i was told that there are now thiaggragating sources onli where you can get appointments so tech savvy people can drive to places they don't live to get vaccine. so you still have a problem with the population not getting the vaccine in their arms, even if it's in their neighborhood. can you do this? >> yeah, so it's a great point. a couple things. first, we are asking the pharmacies and the community health centers? communities to make sure they reserve a high percentage of appointments for people who live in the area. one thing we know about health care, and we had this conversation before. if you do nothing, the structural disadvantages will hurt the disadvantaged and help everyone else because they have the resources to take care of it. just saying i'm blind to it means you're going to fail. so what you have to do is you have to do extraordinary things. so north carolina, they had a big event at panther stadium. they reserved all the morning appointments for people from low income communities. they brought people in from churches and they had a tremendously successful event. we are asking pharmacies and community health centers to do the same thing. because they're the ones that are going to have to do that. that is what happens in a shortage. this is not surprising behavior. they are not bad people out trying to find the vaccines. but the system has to not allow it or we will continue to hurt the people who are getting hurt the most. >> one last thing for you, and thank you for being with us in the middle of the crisis that is added, with the weather, variance. how much of a shot in the hope are the variants? the latest news of johnson & johnson saying it might be a two-shot regime to adjust. a single shot is such a big hope for people. are the variants proving to be more of an obstacle and will they change the outlook or the calendar? >> there are two issues with the variants. the first and most immediate issue, we we case counts doing own and hospitalizations going down, that can be deceptive. the time when you think they're going down is when the next wave can be building. and the next wave, if it's based on the variant, can be extraordinary. the good news is unlike last time around, we are taking people in long term fair facilities and they are getting inoculated quickly. we will have people over 75 lar largely vaccinated. and science needs to adjust and stay ahead of the variants. i spoke to all the pharmaceutical companies and scientists and they all say the same thing. even if these vaccines diminish a limit bit, they be able to continually update them. we are used to -- we are used to mutations with the flu. this is a much higher percentage of success than the flu vaccine. so i am confident and we're going to be releasing guiy guid next week, that we can stale ahead but we have to have a quick process. we can't just lay on our laurels and say this is over. >> any thinking with the speed of the variants just thinking to get one shot and don't worry about the second shot right now, just to get some people as much protection as you can? >> yeah, i think one of the things you probably notice with the white house, we don't so science and we don't pretend to do science. i asked dr. fauci, and they look at the data, and their view -- and i have run this out with the numbers -- is people need to continue to get the second shot. the second shot does add significantly to their immunity, and we have to get more quickly through the first doses that we have in the field. no one is advising people to skip their second shot at this point. the cdc is looking at data. if we have changed their opinion, and we think there is a different approach, we will adjust to it. but i think the backward way of doing it is for us in the white house to be making policy that disregards the science. >> one more quick thing, it's worth the time. there are a lot of questions i get about what the vaccine allows them to do. if you have a vaccine, you have to no longer wear a mask. and fauci says, no, you have to wear the mask. you can be contagious. okay. if people are hanging out with other people who have the vaccine, do they need a mask? and can businesses say, you have been vaccinated, come back to work, or we only want customers who have vaccines? what do you have on that? >> well, look, i know -- the number one thing people will be able to do is live. and beyond that, we still have open questions. we still are wrestling the we are of is -- are you still commune -- communicable. and the one thing, the cdc came out with s people no long ver to isolate if they are exposed to somebody if they had the vaccine. my guess is the cdc will keep looking at the data and make the pronouncements as they learn and it will be lower than everybody wants. and at the same time, the science and data will speak for itself, and the data will be as careful about possible. it will keep us all alive, and i think we will be able to take a look, a few months from now, look back and say, given what we now know, we can now make some significant changes and i think we all look forward to that. i just couldn't tell you when that will be and what it will look like. >> you will be invited on the regular. be well and thank you. >> thank you, chris. >> all right, so in terms of just the leader ship in these times, senator cruz, we are bigger problems than him telling you the truth. he flew to mexico because we wanted to get away from the freezing temperatures and he decided to lie about it, and get away with it. he probably will. let's bring in the better finds and figure out where we are in the state of play, next. every day can be extraordinary with rich, creamy, delicious fage total yogurt. >> well, i think to me, what it means is we do need a commission to study what happened on january 6th. i know that some people have thrown out the idea of a 9/11-style commission. i don't have all the answers on what it should look like or what style it should be. but there needs to be a thorough understanding of the events leading up to it, what happened that day, these issues you've raised with the capitol police, all of it. all of it needs to be fully documented so that we can, a, never let it happen again, and, b, to your point just now, make sure the security forces and the security protocols and procedures at the capitol are protecting the members of congress, the staff, and the public who may be in the building in the case of another event. so put me in the camp for we need a full vetting of this, and it may take a bipartisan big commission to do it. >> fellas, thank you for letting me hold you over for this. i wanted to get your take. this is important news. it's also important to contextualize it. this is not about demonizing the officers. but for them that day, that would have been one of the bloodiest days in american history. so we needed them. they did their job. they're heroes. we just have to make sure everybody deserves that label. michael smerconish, scott jennings, thank you. right back with some good news. we are not just the worst that you see of us. there are ameri-cans. there are capabilities. there is greatness in our desire to know what we don't know, and we saw it in intergalactic fashion today, next. together with a dedicated advisor, you'll make a plan that can adjust as your life changes, with access to tax-smart investing strategies that help you keep more of what you earn. and with brokerage accounts, you see what you'll pay before you trade. personalized advice. unmatched value. at fidelity, you can have both. ♪ more than this ♪ ♪ ♪i've got the brains you've got the looks♪ ♪let's make lots of money♪ ♪you've got the brawn♪ ♪i've got the brains♪ ♪let's make lots of♪ ♪uh uh uh♪ ♪oohhh there's a lot of opportunities♪ with allstate, drivers who switched saved over $700. saving is easy when you're in good hands. allstate click or call to switch today. hi, i'm a new customer allstate and i want your best new smartphone deal. well i'm an existing customer and i'd like your best new smartphone deal. oh do ya? [ cheers and applause ] >> perseverance is continuing to transmit through micro sonic orbiter to earth. [ cheers and applause ] >> oh, my god. >> that is the power of what can happen when you come together and you persevere, when you push through the difficulties. amazing. think about this. those men and women figured out how to get something, going all the way 300 million miles across our galaxy, the milky way, our solar system to mars. and it took just as long for our congress to figure out how to get a relief bill done. we can do better than that. we don't even know what we don't know yet. we're going to be watching for pictures from the rover. it's looking for life, you know, signs that life were there. amazing. imagine if they find out there was, and that teaches them about why it expired, and we can learn lessons maybe about life here for us in the present and how to preserve it. it's just amazing. let's go to the big show "cnn tonight" with a space cadet all his own, don lemon. >> you know who should have taken that trip to mars? it took just as long for him to hop back on that plane and get back here. i mean, chris, come on. >> hey, yo
