These are overthecounter selfperformed test kits that can detect covid with roughly 95 accuracy within 15 minutes. It can be used, if you feel symptoms of covid19, and also for screening for people without symptoms. There is more positive news in the u. S. Pandemic. The weekly average for new cases, theyre actually down. The weekly averaging are down 12 and hospitalizations are down 11 , but still the nation reported more than 110,000 new cases, and nearly 1,800 deaths on sunday. January is now in the record books. The most deaths reported in any month of the pandemic. 95,000 People Dieing from covid just last month. Lets turn now to dr. Paul spearman a professor and director of the Infectious Disease division at Cincinnati Childrens Hospital Medical Center and also a member of the fdas vaccine advisory board, but recused himself from Coronavirus Approvals for now because hes working as an investigator in these cornevid vaccine trials. Thank you very much for coming on. Were very curious about the variants now found in more than half the country. Do they effect the timeline, push it back of returning to normal . If so, by how much . Good to be with you, brianna. Were all concerned about the variants, of course, for a number of reasons. As far as affecting the timeline, if we can still roll out vaccines efficiently and if we can continue to, to see the rates, overall rates decline somewhat, encouraging just in the last few weeks, it doesnt necessarily push back the timeline here in the u. S. Im hopeful that Vaccine Rollouts will continue to improve, and we still have very effective vaccines against these variants, despite concerns were all watching carefully globally and through laboratory work. I also want to ask you about second doses of the vaccine. Of course, the moderna and Pfizer Vaccines require. Today the president s team urged Care Providers to not hold back vaccine. To not hold back a vaccine so that, to make sure they have enough for a second dose for those moderna and Pfizer Vaccines. This is what, what Chief Adviser dr. Anthony fauci said. There are no doses that are hanging around. A dose thats available is going to go into someones arm. If a person is ready for their second dose, that person will be prioritized. If a person has not gotten their first dose, but youve taken care of all of the seconddose people, then you go ahead with the first dose. Thats the policy weve had, and that is working well now. So, i mean what do you say to this . Do you have concerns about how delaying the second dose could impact the protection that the vaccine is supposed to offer . Well, i dont think dr. Faucis really referring having to delay many of the second doses. So i think the moderna and Pfizer Vaccines were studied well as a twodose regimen and we want to continue, we know the protection is quite, quite solid. But the point i think is to get the vaccines in as many peoples arms as we can. So i think what hes referring to is not wanting to sequester away a lot of vaccine, you know, its for, the folks just receives the single dose so that we can rely on continued shipments to still get the second dose and if, in fact, if you miss that exact week when youre supposed to get that second dose and get it a week later or a week after that or even further, its very likely youlling protected in that interim time and still get the booster effect. No. Im not really worried. Ip i see the point. Get out the vaccine to as many as we can. Talk about the home tests. A lot of people are curious and would love the convenience. Made by an Australian Company called the loom and expected to ship from february through july. Many more than that would be needed. It looks like there is a grant from the or theres a payment coming from the u. S. Government to try to make sure there are more. How much of a gamechanger could it be for people to take the test at home, know that it is, you know, 95 certain and that they would know very quickly . Well, i think its goings to be another tool. In the toolbox. A Growing Toolbox for testing. So it will be helpful. Theres no doubt. It will also give individuals who may feel like its not so easy to get tested, even though were all trying to make the accessibility to testing not a difficult chore, but give them another option, where they can do the test themselves and get a very rapid result. So i wouldnt call it a huge gamechanger but its another tool thats going to just help us get the pandemic under control. The more people know whether theyve been infected or whether there are folks theyre around has been infected the better they can quarantine, the better let their doctors know and take the right precautions, an. And dr. Fauci addressed which people should i be getting . Maybe waiting for a vaccine that shows higher efficacy, for instance, pfizer, moderna then also Johnson Johnson, all have excellent results for preventing serious sickness is what fauci is saying. Of course, Johnson Johnson has a lower efficacy rate but just one dose. What about people saying pass on the Johnson Johnson one because i want the one 90something effective, moderna or pfizer . I would say i completely understand what youre saying but its advantageous to get a vaccine that is available to you in your local community at your phase of involvement in getting the vaccines. Because the objective is not necessarily to just prevent a very mild illness, but to completely prevent the deaths and prevent hospitalizations, and the Johnson Johnson vaccine from what weve heard does that very, very well. So despite having, you know, a little bit lower efficacy against milder disease, it is tremendously effective. So its still a very good vaccine. Its still more effective than some of the vaccines in general, like the annual flu vaccine that we encourage people to get. So it will be a good vaccine, and get what you can get. I think that is a, for these times, i think thats good advice. Yeah. Weve been spoiled with vaccines that are 90something percent effective, appears. Doctor, thank you for being with us. Thank you. Its my pleasure. Again, we are just a couple hours away from this it big meeting between President Biden and ten republican senators in the oval office. They are looking to negotiate their counterproposal to the white house as 1. 9 trillion Stimulus Plan and here ks whate know is in the counteroffer. 160 billion for vaccines and testing, other covidrelated supplies. There is 50 billion for small businesses. 132 billion for Unemployment Insurance through june. 220 billion in additional direct payments but more targeted than the biden plan, and then 20 billion for child care ands 20 billion for school. There is overlap here, but some major gaps between the two proposals as well. That includes funding for local and state governments. Lets talk about this now with cnn political director david chalian. The republican plan, david, it costs about a third of what bidens does. Does it stand a chance ins todays meeting . Or, you know, is this just is it an overture . Is it a jumpingoff point to rev up negotiations . How do you see it . Reporter in a word on standing a chance, no, it doesnt. Jen psaki made that clear at the briefing today. You know, this is, as you gist went through a proposal in a different universe than what weve heard from President Biden, and his Treasury Secretary and head of his National Economic council who repeatedly said that they believe the biggest danger is going too small. Not that the big not theres a big danger in going too big in responding to sort of the dual crises of dealing with the pandemic itself and vaccinations and also the economic fallout. Brianna, to answer your question, no doubt this is an overture. Right . This is President Biden saying, okay. You guys, put together a, an earnest proposal, even if one that doesnt match really what my administration is talking about. Come to the oval office, talk about it. An opportunity for biden to express why his proposal looks so different than theirs. Republicans, of course, i think biden would love to have them onboard. He may not get that. He does need to win over democrats. There are democrats in the senate who still need some convincing. Yeah. I think the optics of todays meeting, brianna, are as much about that as they are about actually sort of bipartisan and trying to get republicans onboard. Think of joe manchin of West Virginia or senator sinema of arizona. Two more moderate democrats, and if, indeed, the Biden Administration and the democrats in congress go with that process known at reconciliation and make it sort of a democratonly approach they need every single one onboard. One thing to do to give moderates comfort is the show your willingness to dplideliver the bipartisan calls youve made. Having them people with republicans in the oval office shows outreach and something manchin and sinema can hang their hats on if they get onboard with a democraticonly approach end of the day. David, thank you for taking us through that. Next, President Trump scrambling to add new lawyers to his Impeachment Team because five lawyers quit overed weekend. With his second Impeachment Trial Set to get under way next week former President Trump has a brarnd new defense team. The others walked away over the weekend after trump reportedly wanted him to push his big lie at his senate trial falsely claiming the election was stolen from him. Cnns Jeremy Diamond has more. Reporter womenith just a weo go represented by a pair of controversial attorneys. First, bruce castor, former prosecutor famously declined to prosecute bill cosby over a sexual assaults allegations in 2005 and david shown representing roger stone when prosecuted by Robert Mueller and in talks to defend Jeffrey Epstein and promoted a Conspiracy Theory that his death wasnt a suicide. This after he and the five previous attorneys set to represent him, they split over disagreements over the legal strategy for this Impeachment Trial. The president wanted them to promote these baseless Conspiracy Theories about widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election while the attorneys wanted to do it, republicans are arguing it is unconstitutional to try a former president and convict him in the senate. Brianna . Jeremy, thank you. I want to talk now with john dean, a cnn contributor and former white House Counsel to president nixon. You know, if the president s defense does bring up this false Election Fraud claim on the senate floor, do court rules apply in a Senate Impeachment trial . Could trumps honors open themselves to legal sanctions for making false claims . Its a difficult question, because first, the rooms have nhave rules have not been issued for this trial. Can they have witnesses, or what limits and restrictions . Is all apparently still being negotiated. It is very much like a normal courtroom. However, sanctions are very rare in an impeachment situation. The issue came up in the last Impeachment Trial by trump where some of his lawyers made false statements, much to the chagrin of the hoshouse managers tried with it and found nothing they could really do, although they dealt with it for the sake of history calling out people who made false statements. No immediate solution and it could upset the senate, which has clearly shown a disposition to hold on the republican side that this is an unconstitutional trial, but they may change their mind if they have to vote on whether its a fraudulent election. If he alleges that, that its a fraudulent election, is that something that plays right into what democrats are basically alleging, that he did . And that led to the insurrection . It certainly is what he did. It is the big lie that you referred to, and its the reason apparently his five counsel walked, because they were underprepared to present that defense which he apparently still wants to pursue. So i dont know what hes worked out with these new lawyers. I think theres probably a way they could say, this is what my client believes, and this is why he acted the way he did. And make that argument, and not take it on as their own argument. And then, also, raise the constitutional defense that seems to be favored by the republicans who dont want to address the issue of whether it was a fraudulent election, or the big lie, if you will. Yeah. I mean, they dont have the same, the defense. Theresble of them, actually, republican senators have been giving, but none have taken this one, that he appears to be prepping or would could be prepping. He doesnt even have a coherent defense or one inline with what the republican senators are saying, and yet republican senators largely have already decided that he should be acquitted. What does that say to you . Well it says to me that, and i think mistakenly, both republicans and democrats now, since theyve had this test voeft, are rushing to get this behind them. I dont understand why they dont refer this to an Impeachment Committee, which is done with federal judges. It theoretically was not written for a president ial trial, but he is not a president. Hes an expresident. The rule 11 committee, as theyre called, could very well explore this. They could hold witnesses. They could educate the public. And they might change the mind of some republican senators if this evidence were elicited and educated the public along with them as to what trump knew and when he really knew it and how deeply involve ared he was in something he knew could result in the travesty it did on the capitol. Do you expect witnesses will be called to testify, and if so, do you have any idea what we might expect . Theres certainly a lot of people who could be witnesses, and the question is, do they go after the white house staff . Try to break through privilege and get that information in front of the senate . Thats the real issue. Its not unlike nixon. What did he know and when did he know it . What did trump know about the nature of this crowd . Was he involved in some of the planning that he knew would be very dangerous, if not lifethreatening to members of congress . So those are the big issues that are being brushed over, ened rushed over, if you will. And one of the reasons i think a rule 11 Impeachment Committee is just the ticket here, that could solve everyones problem. And they could keep going on the senate floor. Get on with mr. Bidens business, which is vital to the country, and yet educate the public as to what happened during that travesty on january 6th. John dean, always great to get your persecutive. Thanks for coming on. Thanks, brianna. Next, the mother of a Portland School shooting victim insists on talking to the Georgia Congresswoman who has claimed that the School Shooting was a hoax. Democratic House Majority leader steny hoyer is expected to deliver an ultimatum to Republican Leadership today. That is this strip Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor greene within 72 hours or democrats will bring it to a vote on the house floor. Before elected, pushed miami conspiracies including the shooting at parkland and Douglas High School in parkland, florida, were false flag operations. Staged events to drum up support for gun control legislation. She trailed parkland shooting survivor david hogg in 2019 up on capitol hill trying to advocate for gun control legislation. You can see here she shouted at him, harassed hill. This happened at many places there on the capitol complex. Florida congresswoman Debbie Wasserman schultz one of the sponsor the against greene says that kind of behavior cant go unchecked. If she had honor, of course, she would resign. His mother fought to get footage and wants you to see it. Warning. It is very disturbing but important to help discredit people like Congresswoman Greene who tried to spread lies about that day and i add, there is no audio on this recording. [ no audio on this recording ] scott beagles mother Linda Legal Schulman is with us now. Thank you so much for coming on to talk to us about this. Thank you for having me today and thank you for understanding how important it is to me and to all the others who live this nightmare. And you spoke, i think a lot of people are amazed to know that you spoke to Congresswoman Greene. So can you just share what that conversation was like . Yes. I told Congresswoman Greene that all i wanted to talk to her about was parkland and sandy hook and Everything Else was off the table. I told her, i asked her, actually had one question for her. I asked her, do you really believe that sandy hook Wand Parkland were false flags and staged events . And she looked at me straight in my face and she said, no, i dont. At one point she said they were. Do you take her at her word she now believes they werent . You know, its hard for me to believe that she ever believed that they, that they were. Even i dont know what Conspiracy Theories do for her, but honestly, its hard for me to believe especially after having a conversation with her, that she ever believed that they were false flags or staged events. Did she explain why she said that in the past, then . She did. She had her reasons for things that had happened to her in the past. Again, i must tell you that the parameters were set and we did say that it was going to be a confidential conversation, which later she told me i could tell, you know, i could say whatever i wanted to about it. But im really not going to be her spokesperson for why she, she said or didnt say, or said she didnt say that. She needs to come forward and she needs to explain that. But she did say that she never said that, and that it was really all the media. All right. That is i want to be clear. That is not true. That is not true what she said, just to fact check what she said. She has, you know, its clear and documented what she has said about these past shootings, but to your point, where you said you dont want to be her spokesperson, she did, though you want her to come forward. Shes not doing that. Refused to appear with you publicly and denounce conspiracies shes es 1poused i the past. Whats your reaction to that . She feeling differently than previously said. It would go very far for her to come out and explain that. What does it say to you she wont . Her refusal to make a Public Statement makes it even worse. You know . We all have to look in the mirror and so does she. The fact that politics makes her i have to believe its all politics that are making her just not come forward, and, you know, politics should never, you know, should never trump the truth. It really shouldnt. She needs to come forward. She needs to tell the world publicly that she does not believe that those shootings were false flags and stastaged events. She needs to come forward and make up any reason she said those things but most important is that she disavow those statements. You know, brianna, i was thinking about it and analogies are something that scott and i used to go back and forth about. You know, lies and Conspiracy Theories are like a virus that, that infects a host. I guess you could say that our country is kind of like the host thats been infected, and you know, i think you and Everybody Else whos given me a chance to go and speak and explain why its so important for her to come forward and disavow her her silliness, the Conspiracy Theories, the falsehoods, because, you know, if we do let it go unchecked, then it just, its like a virus. It kills the host. Whats happening is shes literally playing to whether its her base or whether its our cult. You know . If shes playing to our past president , makes no sense, because he knows, hes come forward knowing that that the that both School Shootings happened, that the massacres happened. That people were murdered. So i dont i dont really see that she gains anything by this. If anything it hurts her and we had that conversation. Arent you tired of being beaten, you know, from all sides, because of the Conspiracy Theories . Lets just talk about this one. This one is just this one is, out of off 6 them this is so apparent it happened. Seriously if she wants, ill take her followers. You tell a lie enough, people start believing it. We all know that. Have just been through that. But let me take them on ill take them on a bus trip, on a field trip. I would let them visit the 17 grave sites from the people at parkland and the 26 from sandy hook and then let me see them deny it. I wonder, linda, i mean fshs it would take that much . Stagger to imagine that, but i wonder if you think that this is someone who should be in congress . Should she be removed from congress . You know im not a politician. Im just a mom. You know . Whose son was murdered 1,084 days ago. Its really not for me to say but i will tell you that unless she comes forward, and unless she acknowledges that the massacre wasnt staged and its not a false flag and that it was real and it really did happen, and all of these people were murdered, she has no right to have anything to do with anything having to do with education. Its all about kids and if she can deny what really happened, whether it be kids or teachers or husbands or whatever, she has no right being on the education committee. The rest i really leave, you know, up to the politicians to take care of. Before i let you go, linda, you said the number of days that you have been without your son. Youre coming up again on another anniversary, another year without him. And i just wonder what your reflections are . I just will tell you very briefly that as horrible as this has been to see someone talking about this sort of Conspiracy Theory to be renewed, i did, i was reading about the victims of sandy hook and, pardon me, of parkland and the heroes as well and reading about your son, and just the amazing thing that he did and that was something that i think came back for a number of people to see folks like your son who stepped up in a really tough time. What are you reflexing on as you go into this anniversary . Well, first, we never call it an anniversary, because anniversaries are something that you like to celebrate. So sure. We never call it an anniversary, but its really, really hard. Its hard every day. But its really even harder when it comes to February 14th, as Everybody Knows whose read about me at all, my daughter was born on February 14th. And my son was murdered on February 14th. So its really, it was like one of the best days of ply life and definitely the worst day of my life, but i, im very lucky and i thank everybody. People send, people send messages and people send photos and people send things they remember about scott and for me, you know, i love to read them, and it just makes me know that scott will never be forgotten, but scotts my goto person, and February 14th is really, really hard, you know. Again, we celebrate melissas birthday, but in my own, in my own space, i miss scott terribly, and February 14th is a really hard day. So, you know what . I do say to Marjorie Taylor greene, please, you know what . Find your conscioence. Youre a mother, man up, woman up, whatever you want to say, and tell the truth. Tell everybody what you told me. Linda, we are Thinking Of You coming up here in these days on February 14th, and i just i really appreciate you being with us today. Linda beigel schulman. Thank you so much. Thank you. The images from january 6th of americans violently storming the capitol sent shock waves around the world. Ukraines president Telling Axion the riot dealt a strong blow to help other countries view u. S. Democracy. We were very shocked. I was very surprised. Tr translator i could not imagine Something Like this was possible in the United States of america. I believe this was a strong blow to democracy of the United States. It is just that after Something Like this, i believe it would be very difficult for the world to see the United States as a symbol of democracy in the world. I want to bring in cnn Global Affairs analyst to talk about this. A Senior Council on the Foreign Relations and columnist for the Washington Post also. What do you think about what he said there . A sad and accurate reflection, i think, where we are in the world and the damage thats been done to the United States by the trump presidency. I mean, its not just the events of january 6th. Its everything thats happened which was really an unremitting assault on u. S. Democracy and it wasnt just an assault on democracy. Also a horrific display of imp competence in the fact more than 400,000 americans died in the last year of the trump presidency, because we mishandled coronavirus worse than any other country in the world. This is going to leave a longterm blot on americas reputation, which used to be that of a country that was democratic, that was cando that could accomplish thingss now people around the world look at us and saying, this is a pitiful pariah. America cant get anything right, cant even uphold its own democracy. Theres a small chance to get things right if the senate were actually to vote to impeach donald trump and hold him accountable showing the rule of law really does prevail. All odds are, republicans will make that impossible. So if trump is acquitted next week i think its going to reinforce that message of, that president zelensky just talked about. I want to ask you also about iran, because Secretary Of State tony blinken said in a new Interview Iran is weeks away from having enough materiel for a nuclear bomb. Of course, the trump, President Trump pulled the u. S. Out of the iran deal and certainly the view of administration that was a huge failure. What is bidens move now on this . President biden has to resean be the jcoa a the deal was known. Its obvious pulling out of it in 2018 was a catastrophe. Iran now has 12 times as much enriched uranium as it had in 2016 and secretary blinken indicated theyre very close to capacity to manufacture a nuclear weapon, much closer than when the deal was still in effect in 2018. Its not going to be easy to reassemble that deal, of course, because theres a lot of distrust on the part of iran because the United States violated the accord even though they were abiding by it. Of course, we cant just get back into the original accord. It actually has to be extended because some of the timelines in that accord would expire within the next four years. So this is going to require heavy diplomatic lift, but necessary, because weve seen that exiting the accord, its done nothing to contain iranian power, in fact, led iran to become more dangerous than ever. In the coming years well talk a lot about this. Thanks for coming on. Still ahead, the City Of Chicago is in a heated negotiation with the Teachers Union over the return to school. Im going to speak to one teacher who says shes not willing to risk her life or that of loved ones to go back. You. A conflict over coronavirus is coming to a head in chicago. More than 60,000 Public School students k8 are not in the classroom because of a clash between the Teachers Union and the School District over how to reopen. Now theres talk the Teachers Union may strike even though the two sides have met more than 70 times according to district officials. Kirsten matthews is with us now. Youre very much in the middle of this. Thanks for coming on and talking about this. The union says agreements were reached on serious issues like Health And Safety protocols, ventilation, Contact Tracing and safety committees. What is outstanding. What are your concerns that remain . Well, my concerns that remain, the number one certain i have is that covid is still spreading in chicago. Many of the communities in which we teach covid is well above 10 Community Spread, and i dont believe that weve reached an agreement on the question of how our vaccines are going to be distributed to the people who work in the schools let alone people in those hardest hit communities. We really have not reached agreement on a question of accommodations for people like myself. I live in a multigenerational household with my Public School students as well as my elderly parents. My mother has very Serious Health concerns and disabilities. Weve come so far in covid. We see the vaccine, like a light at the end of the tunnel, and the idea of exposing her now to this virus is terrifying. Its a really big issue. Yes. Your Teachers Union isnt the only one right now at odds with a School District over reopening at this point in time. Its something that weve seen a lot of. Im sure youre aware that a lot of School Districts in cities will point to several studies. They will point to a study recently from cdc doctors that says schools are not really a spreader of coronavirus, and i wonder what you say when that is held up as a reason to reopen schools, not to a reason to reopen them. Sure. I think that people should really read the cdc studies more carefully because what they are saying is that schools can be safe if Safety Measures and protocols are invested in. If the level of Community Spread is low, if we do things like close restaurant, theaters and museums. Instead in chicago they are opening the museums. They are opening theaters. They are opening Indoor Dining in restaurants so i do think cdc guidance is important to contend with, and i also think we have to Pay Attention to the new variants of covid that are being found right here in illinois and in chicago where i teach, and we dont know whats going to happen with that, but we should Pay Attention to what happened in europe where they spread like wildfire through the schools. Children were bringing it home to their families and schools have had to be closed again. We know the stakes are high. They are high north kid and the teachers and this issue isnt going to go away here immediately. Kirsten roberts, thanks so much for being with us.
