Against the variants right now. The more contagious variant first found in south africa is here. It almost certainly means theres other cases out there. This is new day, with Alisyn Camerota and john berman. Welcome to our viewers in the United States and all around the world. This is new day. It is friday, january 29th, its 6 00 here in new york. So why is this man smiling . No, not the guy on the left who lost an election by 7 million votes and presided over the deaths of 400,000 americans from coronavirus. The guy on the right, the republican leader on the right. Why is he smiling . Because hes been working on some bipartisan deal to get vaccines to millions of people . Is he smiling because hes been fighting for Economic Relief for millions of people out of work . Is he smiling because hes taken a new public stand against lies, hate, and bigotry . No, no, and no. Hes smiling because he got a political pat on the head, the tender embrace of the man who told a mob to march on the capitol. A mob that beat police officers, killing one. Two other officers have since taken their own lives. With the pandemic and economic crisis hanging over the nation, Kevin Mccarthy is superduper happy that the former president likes him again. We have new reporting this morning on what this means for the Republican Party and safety issues for Congress Going forward. Meanwhile, a new development in the effectiveness of vaccines against that new coronavirus strain. Preliminary results from the Drugmaker Novavax show that while it is 89 effective against the regular strain weve been dealing with, the vaccine is only 60 effective against that South African variant. The first cases of that strain were found in the u. S. Yesterday, in people with no travel history. And that means theres already community spread. Dr. Anthony fauci says, quote, it doesnt look good. Lets begin with cnns lauren fox. She is live for us on capitol hill. Good morning, lauren. Good morning, alisyn. Today on capitol hill, lawmakers still trying to grapple with how to move on prosecute coronavirus and come up with some kind of bipartisan stimulus package. Meanwhile, republicans with problems of their own, dealing with a fractured party, split between those who want to stick with former President Trump and those who are ready to move on. Reporter just over three weeks after the deadly insurrection at the capitol, House Speaker nancy pelosi saying Security Threats to lawmakers there arent only coming from outside of congress. We will probably need a supplement al for more security for members, when the enemy is within the house of representatives. When pressed by reporters, pelosi giving this response. It means that we have members of congress who want to bring guns on the floor and have threatened violence on other members of congress. Reporter this as Minority Leader Kevin Mccarthy spends time in florida, looking to make amends with former president donald trump, just weeks after making this statement following the capitol attack. The president bears responsibility for wednesdays attack on congress by mob rioters. Trumps Political Action committee saying the meeting at maralago discussed taking back the house in 2022, falsely adding are President Trumps popularity has never been stronger than it is today. Democrats condemning mccarthys visit. It tells me he stands with someone who basically incited insurrection as opposed to standing with our constitution. Mccarthy ignoring warnings of the appearance of crawling back to trump. One source close to the House Minority leader tells cnn, while some Top Republicans Like Senate Minority Leader Mitch Mcconnell are trying to distance the party from the former president. But now, some of trumps most loyal allies are targeting gop house members who voted to impeach him earlier this month, including congresswoman liz cheney. Florida congressman matt gaetz slamming her at a rally in wyoming, cheneys home state. If you want to prove that you have the power to defeat liz cheney in this upcoming election and wyoming will bring washington to its knees. This despite mccarthy privately asking republican colleagues to stop fighting, bluntly begging them to cut this crap out, two sources on the call tell cnn. We have to save america. Reporter also taking center stage for the gop, georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor greene. House republicans giving the protrump promoter of Conspiracy Theories a seat on the house education and labor committee. A move pelosi disapproves. Assigning her to the Education Committee when she has mocked the killing of little children at sandy hook elementary school, when she has mocked the killing of teenagers in high school at the Marjory Stoneham douglas high school, what could they be thinking . Reporter and meanwhile the drama is building up on capitol hill as lawmakers are trying to put together some kind of bipartisan effort on this stimulus bill. There are still questions about whether or not republicans would come onboard with some democrats losing patience and charging forward with the process that could unlock their ability to pass this, with just a simple majority of democratic votes. Alisyn . Okay, lauren, thank you very much for all of that. So the acting chief of u. S. Capitol police calling for permanent fencing around the capitol as Law Enforcement tries to confront the ongoing threats to lawmakers. Cnns whitney wild is live in washington with more. Whitney . This is creating a bit of a back and forth among leaders here in washington, d. C. As you mentioned, the acting chief of the u. S. Capitol Police Department is advocating for permanent fencing. She said these recent events have proven that additional Security Measures like that are necessary. However, just about an hour before she released that statement, the mayor of d. C. Told reporters she did not think that permanent fencing was the answer. She didnt want to see that kind of Security Posture in the district on a permanent basis. This is also being met with bipartisan criticism. Here are two full screens for you. The first is from a democrat from massachusetts. He tweeted, it is a mistake to turn the home of our democracy into a fortress. The capitol needs to be safely opened for constituents, press, and visitors. A republican from new york basically echoed that statement, saying, i am adamantly opposed. There has been no threat briefing given to members of congress to justify this proposal. All of this comes after news you have to district on wednesday. A man was contacted by police after parallel parking basically in the middle of the street, alisyn. When Police Contacted him and said, what are you doing here, he said he was here to see the fencing around his capitol. He said he had questions and concerns about the honesty and the integrity of the election. He was very animated. He was shouting at the national guard. And importantly, when police said, do you have a firearm, he said, yes. He had a 9 Millimeter Handgun in the console of his car, and in addition, he had 20 rounds of ammunition. He told police that he thought his West Virginia license to carry a handgun would transfer to d. C. That is not the case here, alisyn. Hes now facing Weapons Charges for all of this. In addition to the weapon that they found in his car, police also found Stop The Steal paperwork as well as a list of members from both the u. S. Congress as well as the Virginia State legislature. He was in Court Earlier this week. A judge sent him home and said, you cannot come into the district unless you have a court hearing. Its amazing how emboldened and entitled people like that are feeling at the moment. Whats the status of the guy who had his feet up on Nancy Pelosis desk during the insurrection . Reporter well, he was in court. He had another hearing about whether or not they were going to keep him in custody and the resounding answer is absolutely. The chief judge here in d. C. Saying that we are still living with the results of the violence on january 6th. And absolutely just lambasted these rioters. Denied his request to try to get out of custody. She said, and i have the quote if youll give me a moment, well, im sorry, alisyn, ji dont have the quote, but she made one of the loudest and most resounding statements about all of this. She said the charges hes accused of, including trespassing, she said the title of those offenses dont even come close to capturing the real scope of the effect those rioters had on the capitol on january 6th. It was a hard no for him to get out of custody and she, again, really lambasted the hundreds of rioters who are now accused in this case, alisyn. I hear that logic. That the idea that trespassing doesnt seem to kcapture the spurt with which they went marauding through the capitol. Lauren fox is back with us. Also with us, cnn commentator charlie dent. A former republican member of congress from pennsylvania. Charlie, this is what the House Republican leader says of his meeting with the former president. President trumps popularity has never been stronger than it is today. Im reading this with the longing that Kevin Mccarthy clearly wrote it with. His endorsement means more than perhaps any dormant at any time. So charlie, you keep on telling us that theres a battle going on inside the Republican Party. What battle . A House Republican leader just traveled, did a Pilgrimage To Mecca to bow before the former president of the United States and then sent this, you know, statement out, which is the definition of obsequiousness. He makes Lindsey Graham look like a man with an incredible spine. I mean, doesnt this just indicate to you that whatever battle you were hoping existed is over . No, john. I think the battle has just begun. That statement you just read was painful to listen to. Obviously, Kevin Mccarthy went down there On Bended Knee and behaved too much like a supplicant to the former president , who was not that popular, who has been twice impeached, whos been disgraced, who lost resoundingly in the general election. And this is not the future of the party. We all know it. Right now with the leadership, what the republican side needs to do is come out and tell Marjorie Taylor greene what they should have told her this summer, which was to give her the treatment and say no committees, youre not welcome into the conference, were going to work with the Georgia State gop to defeat you in the upcoming primary. Hey, enjoy your time in congress. Thats how they should be dealing with her and this problem and dealing with these fringe elements, qanon, proud boys, and these other wild l elements out of there. They have to be put out of the party completely. This is simple. Are we going to stand with matt gaetz or with liz cheney . Lets have a public conversation with that. Im with liz cheney and Adam Kinzinger and the rest of them. I think this is just beginning this fight. I hope its not going to be a short war. Its going to be a longer one, i fear, between now and 2022 and 2024. And lauren, as charlie points out, this problem is not going away. Certainly, the Marjorie Taylor greene problem is not going away. There is something fundamentally wrong with that person who would chase a victim of a School Shooting down the street, heckling him. Thats not going away. And theres new reporting from axios that the Republican Party knew about Marjorie Taylor greene before she was elected and knew it was a problem, because she had all of these hundreds of odious tweets and they the leadership got together, and they were like, uhoh, this is going to explode on us. But they didnt deal with it. They put it aside. And here we are. Shes here. Her opponent has been quoted as saying she has no interest in governing. She just is a bomb thrower. And interestingly, The Hundreds Of Offensive Facebook posts and tweets she put out have been scrubbed. So she knows enough to know that those things are offensive and can get her in trouble and to scrub her accounts of them. But she still feels that way and all we know right now is that Kevin Mccarthy, the Minority Leader, does plan to talk to her. But there is no evidence that there will be any changes to come from that meeting. Remember, she was just put on the Education Committee, after you saw that video of her walking behind a Gun Violence Victim and essentially berating them about what they were doing on capitol hill. I mean, i think that there is a strong sense of concern from republican, Rank And File members, in the conference, about how much time she is taking up for them. Essentially, every second that we are talking about Marjorie Taylor greene, republicans say that they cant be talking about what they might disagree with in bidens policies moving forward. And i think that that juxtaposition and the distraction that she is going to continue to be, not to mention the fact that she still won her election by a huge margin and the faction of the Republican Party that she represents, remember, she got elected by real people, real voters. And i think the question for the Republican Party is, how do you try to start and reckon with the fact that you have to go to your voters and tell them the truth about what is happening, the fact that the election was fair, the fact that joe biden deserves to be the president of the United States. And i think theres a lot of work to do that begins with a conversation, a tough conversation with Marjorie Taylor greene, and has to go far beyond that. Yeah, great points there, lauren. Look, if these republicans do have a problem with Marjorie Taylor greene, they have a strange way of showing, which is to say, by not showing it at all. Basically, theyre not doing anything publicly. And charlie, the point that lauren brings up, the problem with Marjorie Taylor greene isnt the jewish space lasers that she blames for starting forest fires, problem isnt her, the problem is the people who have accepted her. Its the leadership that looks the other way. Its the Republican Party apparatus in georgia who either look the other way or kbrembrac her publicly. Marjorie Taylor Greene has always been Marjorie Taylor greene. Its everyone around her now thats the problem. Thats correct, john. But remember, too, steve king was elected multiple times, but not until the leadership of the party stood up and Kevin Mccarthy, to his credit, stood up and condemned him skpad, no more. Youre off the committees. You know what, after leadership took their foot down on his neck, so to speak, they said, its done. He was defeated in his primary. The same thing has to happen to Marjorie Taylor greene. The leadership needs to speak clearly, that she is not welcome in the party, he is not welcome in the conference, and that she and her ilk, these Conspiracy Theorists and all of these whacky things that she supports, there is no room for them. Make it crystal cloear. And they will defeat her in the next primary. Her opponent in the primary last time said he had a dumpster full of Opposition Research on this woman that was just devastating. Now were learning more and more about it. So, i think he said, no shirt, no shoes, no service. Kick her out. Thats the only way to deal with this. She will lose that primary, but its going to require leadership from the top of the party to squelch her. Well, the leadership has spoken clearly. Kevin mccarthy went to maralago, took a picture with a big grin and said it was the happiest day of his life. Hes never had a prouder endorsement in his life. Right now theyre speaking crystal clear, but appreciate the conversation. Charlie dent, lauren fox, thank you very much. This morning, the brand n. O. W. Coronavirus data that has dr. Anthony fauci saying not good. Potential major red flags in vaccine studies, next. Ok everyone, our mission is to provide complete, balanced nutrition for strength and energy. Whoohoo great tasting ensure with 9 grams of protein, 27 vitamins and minerals, and nutrients to support immune health. Among my patients, i often see them have Teeth Sensitivity as well as gum issues. Does it worry me . Absolutely. Sensodyne sensitivity gum gives us the dual Action Effect that really takes care of both our Teeth Sensitivity as well as our gum issues. Theres no question its something that i would recommend. New concerns this morning about the effectiveness of vaccines against the new highly contagious spreads of coronavirus, especially that South African variant. Preliminary results from the Drugmaker Novavax show their vaccine is 89 effective against the original strain, but only 60 effective against the South African strain. Yesterday, the first cases of that South African strain were identified in the United States. Joining us now is dr. Carlos del rio, the executive associate dean of the Emory University school of medicine at grady health system. Dr. Del rio, thank you so much for being here. Can we assume that now drugmakers are shifting into overdrive to begin to try to come up with boosters or new vaccines for these new strains . Yes, alisyn, i think thats already happen. We know that moderna is already making changes in their vaccine to be active against these strains. And likely everybody else is doing the same. I think the results we got from novavax in a way are good in one sense, because the vaccine looks pretty good. 90 effective against the strain that is currently circulating and even against the uk strain. But it doesnt look that good against South African strain. And particularly doesnt look good in persons living with hiv. And the South African strain is here in the United States right now. We know it has been found, two people in south carolina, people who have not been to south africa. Clearly, it is here, and it is beginning to spread. I sense real concern amongst some of the findings in this novavax study. As you said, it does not work as well against the South African strain. And people who have had the original strain are being infected again by the new strain. This basically just raises concerns about a battle thats not over, doctor. Thats absolutely right, john. The cases of reinfection that we saw in the Novavax Trial are concerning, indeed. Because they suggest that the neutralizing antibodies of people who got infects and are producing are now protecting against the South African strain and the vaccine is confirming that. It is looking like that one strain that we need to be very concerned about. And the fact that we already found it in the u. S. Really is concerning. Heres what dr. Fauci has to say about the vaccines and the new variant. The early indications from a trial that literally just came out from a Company Called novavax indicates that a vaccine that looks really good against what were dealing with now doesnt look that good in the sense of not 90 to 95 . Its somewhere down around 60 for nonhivinfected individuals. But practically speaking, dr. Del rio, what does this mean . Should people even if its not 89 . Even if its 60 . Will people be able to get that and get that 60 protection, or will they have to wait until novavax and all of these other drugmakers perfect their vaccine . Well, thats a really good question. I think that youve got to remember that even though that strain is here, its not the predominant strain. And lets not forget the vaccine showed 90 efficacy against strains current circulating. I would rather take something thats here now than worry about something that might happen latter on. In my sense, you have to take something that will give you some degree of protection. Somethings better than nothing, thats crystal clear. If there were no moderna or Pfizer Vaccine and the only thing we had we had something that was 50 or 60 effective, people would be rushing to it. But say the South African variant spreads and becomes dominant or very prevalent in the United States, you can only get novavax at 60 , do you then try to get when available m moderna or pfizer. Can you combine vaccines to try to get more resistance . Dyou sound like a scientist. Those are really good questions. At this point, we dont know the answer, but those are very important questions. At this point in time, my preferred vaccines would be the pfizer or moderna vaccine. The novavax one that you may not put at the top of your list. And remember, we still have astrazeneca and johnson johnson. Results will be coming out anytime. And i think once we look at this, we will know what the platform looks and what options we have and what are states going to do. Whats the federal government going to do . Remember, we have through orpgs warp speed, already bought millions of doses of these vaccines. People are excited about the ones that you just mentioned, the johnson johnson, for instance, because its just one dose. And is that a game changer . Having a onedose vaccine will be a total game changer. It also doesnt have some of the Refrigeration Requirements that we see the pfizer and moderna. And the cost of the adenovirus vaccines are a lot cheaper. Were talking about 20 for the moderna and pfizer and 4 for the adenovirus vaccines. Dr. Del rio, thank you for helping us understand this and the new questions that are raised all of a sudden about this pandemic. A millionaire couple i canadian Authorities Say rodney baker and his wife, katarina, flew to a remote village in the yukon earlier this month and instead of isolating for two weeks as required by law, the two showed up at a mobile clinic to get the vaccine they were not eligible to get. They were not charged for getting vaccinated, but breaking quarantine requirements. Canada has given Indigenous Community their priority for vaccines. The bakers could face up to six months in prison. Cnn has reached out to them for comment, but there has been no response. What do you think tipped off the local that they werent part of the Indigenous Community . The evening gown she was in or the tuxedo he was in. President biden continues to pursue that bipartisan deal for his 1. 9 trillion Coronavirus Relief package. Hows that going . Cnns Jeremy Diamond is live at the white house for us. Hi, jeremy. Hi, alisyn. The pursuit of bipartisan does indeed continue here at the white house this morning. We know that President Biden has been on the phone with several democratic lawmakers over the last week as well as white house officials having those meetings. But there is no sign as of yet that we are any closer to actually reaching a deal. But what i can tell you is that inside the white house, there is a growing acknowledgement that this 1. 9 trillion price tag for this Coronavirus Relief bill, it will have to be pared down if, indeed, a bipartisan deal is to be achieved. That is a big if, though, as were talking about right now if white house hasnt made any big concessions yet and a Senior Administration official told me that they still consider every major component of this bill essential. What they might be willing to do is negotiate on those components to bring down the price tag, specifically, i was told that the stimulus checks to americans, that there is some wiggle room there for the white house. In terms of targeting that Financial Assistance more narrowly to individuals with lower income levels. Its not clear how much lower the white house is willing to go on the price tag and more critically, whether that will be enough to get republican support. And at the same time, on capitol hill, what were seeing is democrats already taking the steps to set up this budget reconciliation effort. Theyre going to begin doing that next week. Thats the process that would allow the white house to pass major parts of this package along party lines with their democratic majority in the senate. The White House Press secretary jen sack ji, just yesterday, she wouldnt rule out President Biden signing a Coronavirus Relief bill that passes along party lines. Lis listen. Given that democrats have indicated that they will move forward without bipartisan support, would President Biden sign a bill that only democrats vote for . Thats getting us a few steps ahead of where we are now. Hep continues to believe this will be, should be and will be a bipartisan bill that provides support from democrats and republicans. And hes conversations with and listening to leaders and members of both parties to assure that we get to exactly that place. If we got to that place where only democrats have voted for it, is he okay with it . Well have a conversation at that point. Were not there yet. So you can see, she clearly would not rule that out. And frankly, theres no reason to believe that joe biden would not sign a bill that was passed solely by democrats. This has been kind of what the white house has been trying to reconcile, is both the urgency of the action that they are asking for and also the difficulty of achieving a bipartisan deal. And so reconciliation seems like the more likely option here. But one interesting thing that jen psaki also said yesterday was that she said that theyre not necessarily mutually exclusive. You could have the Budget Reconciliation Process with 50 democrats in the senate and also have some republicans joining that effort without it being a 60plus filibusterproof majority. Of course, the question is, which republicans would be willing to sign on to this package as of now. And right now, we dont have any clear names who would be willing to sign on. Alisyn . Jeremy, how about the Executive Orders that President Biden has been signing. Theres been a flurry of them so hes getting some criticism and how are they responding to that . More than three dozen Executive Orders that President Biden has signed in his first days in office. That is a Record Number of Executive Actions outpacing his last three predecessors, barack obama, george w. Bush, and bill clinton, as well. So it is a stunning pace, and what the white house is saying is that, look, this is not a substitute for legislative action. They have made clear that as President Biden has taken Executive Action on the coronavirus, on the economy, or on health care, that none of those are institutes for what they would like to see passed through congress to achieve those same policy goals. But there has been criticism from republicans on capitol hill, including the Senate Minority leader mitch mcconnell, who just yesterday criticized President Biden for governing by fiat, essentially. And also from some elements on the left. The New York Times Editorial Board yesterday suggesting that biden was using this Executive Action as a substitute, which is exactly what the white house was pushing back on yesterday. President biden himself made clear yesterday that when he was signing those Executive Actions on health care, that what he was trying to do was to undo the damage done by his predecessor and that is also the point that the White House Press secretary, jen psaki, made yesterday. She even said that biden was trying to undo some immoral actions from the president and that they feel a sense of urgency to act, Given The Coronavirus pandemic, even as they are still pursuing that bipartisan Coronavirus Relief deal on capitol hill. Okay. Jeremy diamond, thank you very much for all of the information. So if you thought that congresswoman Marjorie Taylor greenes incendiary social media posts and her harassment of a School Shooting survivor would somehow erode her support from her constituents, think again. And i would follow her more than any other congressman or senator i have ever seen in office. How does that work . Well, we have a report from her home district, next. Use a single hr software . Nope. We use 11. Eleven. Why do an expense report from your phone when you can do it from a machine that jams . I just emailed my wifes Social Security number to the entire company instead of hr, so. Please come back. How hard is your Business Software working for you . With paycom, employees enter and manage their own hr data in one easytouse software. Visit paycom. Com for a free demo. Hon . First off, we love each other. This morning, Marjorie Taylor greene is a member of congress in good standing, even after indicating support for executing democratic politicians. House leadership, democratic leadership taking no action. And whats more, in her district, she seems more popular than ever. Cnns Martin Savidge reports from her town hall overnight. Reporter we werent allowed inside the congresswomans town hall, we were told explicitly by her office and Law Enforcement that we had to remain in the parking lot, even though this is actually public property, its county airport, about 30 miles just outside of atlanta. One things very clear, the congresswoman does not appear or seem to believe that she has to back down in any way as a result of the outrage and the anger that seems to be mounting against her, because of statements she has made or believes that she has espoused. The other thing thats clear is that those who voted for her, they arent changing their mind, either. They seem to like her even more, given that her outspokenness is just sign of how genuine she is. Things you should know about this area. It was an area that supported former President Trump strongly. Its an area where many still believe the election was stolen, even though factually we know it was not. And its an area that believes many of the same Conspiracy Theories that the congresswoman herself has supported at one time or another. Heres just some of the people we spoke to. Shes under a lot of scrutiny right now. What do you think of it . Well, ill address the three issues that im aware of that shes under scrutiny for. The first one, being the oldest, was she followed those q Conspiracy Theories. Whether or not she did, whether or not she believed them, shes reading. What brings you here . Marjorie Taylor Greene. What do you want to hear . I want to hear shell continue to be the woman we elected and take the fight to the left in washington. Is there anything she has done or said since taking office that has changed your opinion . Absolutely not. In fact, my 23 years in georgia and the years prior to that, shes the most serious candidate and i would follow her more than any other congressman or senator ive ever seen in office. Reporter so if youre looking for some sort of ground swell of outrage and anger against congresswoman greene, so far its not happening here. Back to you. There you have it there you have it thats how she when people wonder, how did she get 75 of her district . How did she win with that margin . Its not a bug, its a feature. The problem, and im going to say this repeatedly in the show for Marjorie Taylor greene who reportedly wrote about jewish space lasers starting forest fires. Thats the least of her offenses. Any point is, the problem isnt the jewish space lasers. Its the fact that the party and apparently a large group of voters is willing to accept it. All of this stuff has been known from the beginning and it seems evident now that again, theyre no supporting her in spite of it, but we have to assume because of it. Well, also, her opponent in that runoff said that there is a mountain of Oppo Research that his campaign had. So this isnt going away. The problem of Marjorie Taylor greene is not going anywhere. Just because she scrubs her twitter and her facebook free, she tries to, of her offensive comments, its not going away. But yi dont think the problm is her. Its everyone else. Its the party thats accepting her. Its her. A lot of people this morning waking up, wondering if Today Is The Day that theyre going to make some kind of fortune by bashing the hedge funds. This gamestop thing just keep on. The remarkable Roller Coaster, what you need to know about this, next. At morgan stanley, a global collective of thought leaders offers investors a broader view. Com so major new developments this morning in the Roller Coaster on wall street. The gamestop saga. Gamestop plunged more than 40 yesterday, but this morning, shares are up nearly 100 in premarket trading. Why . Well, yesterday, the investment app robinhood restricted gamestop trading, but today its going to lift some of those restrictions so here we go again. Joining us now, Cnn Business Anchor and correspondent Julia Chatterley who has been all over this story. Im going to try to summarize in ten seconds where we are and what this all means. Basically, retail investors, regular people, have been making a fortune off of gamestop stock, sticking it to hedge fund investors, sticking it to institutional investors. Yesterday, the primary or one of the primary ways they were doing that, sticking it to the man, was taken away from them. Robinhood stopped letting them trade the way they had been yesterday. Today theyre going to again. How does robinhood explain, how does this app explain why and how theyve made these decisions . You explained it perfectly. Ordinary investors basically felt that their hands were tied at the moment where they were just starting to make moment and get on top here. Effectively, what robinhood did by limiting trading was that they artificially manufactured selling pressure. It put pressure on that stock and we saw that yesterday, and that effectively pushes the share price in a direction that helps the hedge fund. What robinhood said was, look, we have to do this for regulatory purposes. We have to shore up our own cash positions and make sure that people arent in a position where theyre buying this stock and actually cant afford to do it or dont have the money there. In their defense, theyve actually raised a billion dollars. Ther theyre a relatively new company and for them to get caught offguard by the volume and size of what happened and need to shore up their cash defenses makes sense. But the handling of this was reallyst stinky and they have a Working Relationship with one of the hedge funds involved. So you can understand for the smaller investors, they were just like, the systems rigged and trust was broken. One of the avenues or one of the places that has helped fuel this is this area on reddit called wall street bets. This site that has discussed or promoted, although thats a legal term thats problematic in terms of regulation, but talked about investing in gamestop and other stocks and driving the prices up. You talked to the founder of that. What did he tell you about this gamestop frenzy . He likened it to a train wreck, which i thought was interesting, and he doesnt envy anyone involved and hes enjoying watching it from the sidelines. He had a sense of the power of social media and collective conversation on these things. But what really stood out to me was, i said to him, this is not a game. This is a bubble. And bubbles pop and people lose money and people get hurt. And he said, and ill get the quote right, bubbles are such boomer mentality. So clearly, im very well preserved. But you know, when i look at the stock market and weve been talking about this a lot and it defies gravity and keeps rising, you would be forgiven for thinking that these stocks can continue to rise forever. And john, that is what terse me. Boomer mentality to call this a bubble. Well, they cant. They cant rise forever. Sooner or later, people are going to sell. The companies are not worth this much. People will start to sell and someone will be left holding the back. Someone will be the one left holding on to a stock worth much less than it is right now. This is where the fed might be interested, the regulatory interest, people say, look, hedge funds and institutions have been gaming the system forever. Theyve been manipulating the markets forever while everyone has stood on the sidelines and watched, so why all of a sudden will there be concern about regular people doing it. You know when youve aligned ted cruz and aoc, something really momentous is happening here. I think there are three things we have to look at. This stock is up 1,000 year to date. Thats not normal. Then theres the behavior of hedge funds. They have the ability to go out there and put pressure on these companies and say, we think theyre going to go out of business and sell them. Then youve got a bunch of people on social media and suddenly having access to these financial platforms and being able to sell stocks. And how that behavior influences the markets. So much has changed and so much has been realized in the last few weeks. And all of these three things need tackling and need tackling separately. And the fact that youve got the white house, youve got the Federal Reserve looking at this, and lawmakers now coming together is a good thing. Because if the system is rigged and there are bad players here and the hedge funds do have a greater advantage, based on their sheer scale and size, then an investigation and action needs to be taken. And what i think weve learned here is the use of social media and the use of these platforms means is that the smaller guy are suddenly big power brokers, too.
