We are less than four hours away from saying goodbye to 2020 a year many people want nothing more to do with. Goodbye. Good riddance. Were welcoming in 2021. This year obviously has meant personal loss for so many families and friends, economic devastation, also a year we hope ends with something of a light at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully tonight is an escape. Well smile and laugh with you. It is our biggest new years eve ever. Yes. Star studded lineup. We do, actually. Great musical performances. Puppies. Tatoos. Yes. Shots. Oh, for the first time in decades times square is actually closed to the public on new years eve. In world war ii there were two years where there was no ball drop because they were afraid of possible air raids. They didnt want the lights of times square on and crowds gathering. In the crowd tonight although you cant really call it a crowd, in an empty times square tonight are heroes of 2020. There are doctors, nurses, Health Care Workers, First Responders and their families, people who have dedicated their lives and risked their lives to help all of us in this incredibly difficult year. Well be talking to them throughout the four and a half hours tonight. I brought two bottles of tequila. Not just for the crew. I want to say it seems so fitting and beautiful that the First Responders are down there. Absolutely. This is usually as you know a very sought after place to be for times square. Yes. People stand in pens for hours, peeing in their pants, all sorts of horrible things. Youre obsessed with that. Well, i cant get over it. When andys mom called him up earlier today what was it she said . She said are you guys wearing diapers tonight . I was like, no. She goes why . You should. Im like, were not. Anyway, i odd that your mom was worried about us wearing diapers. She is worried about our anyway. We have a clip of the dunce caps from last year toasting. Standing right here at this exact with such great promise. I want to say part of the reason i think i was so excited is i was drunk. You were drunker. I knew you had a baby on the way. Yes i was communicating to you. Oh, okay. Like this is going to be great. Okay. Take a look at our optimism from last year. Yeah. Im so grateful for our friendship. I think youre the best. And i love the year we had together and i look forward to 2020 and all that is in our future. All right. Little did we know what was in our future. Little did we know. We have double ear pieces to drowned out so much noise. There is no noise. We are really right near the stage right here for sea crest and really going to be able to tell who is lip syncing tonight. Well tell you guys what is really going on. Thats right. Its just wild. You can turn to the other things maybe time to time but then come back to us. There is nothing on. Well tell you whats happening. Well tell you whats going on. Everything else is glossy and fake. Well give it to you straight here. As straight as we can. Oh, man. Wow. What was wild about this year in New York City, one of the things of course, was you and i both spent a lot of times on our bikes in New York City. Yes, of course. And it was so surreal and hopefully there will never be another time like it riding your bike through New York City having to be totally empty and having it all, having it to yourself, and it is like that tonight in times square. It is, yes. So surreal. Anderson was i was home recovering from covid. I didnt leave my apartment for about three weeks and anderson would call me. He rode his bike to cnn every night. He would call me and report on the rats that were on the street. There were a lot. Yes. He was very upset about the rats. Yes. He started to lead me to believe that when i did leave my apartment i was going to get the crap beaten out of me by a rat. Thats what i felt from your reports. There was a moment where, you know, it was touch and go in the streets. I did have a showdown with a rat. I was riding home after work and right a block from my house there was a rat in the middle of the street. I came to a full stop and it stopped and was looking at me and i was like okay. You win. I went around the rat. The rat didnt move i want to point out there are some Health Care Workers and First Responders. And their families. Behind them there are these blow up, fake people. A little creepy. That are freaking us out. Im sure as we get drunk maybe theyll become festive but it freaks me out right now i guess a Planet Fitness advertisement but those things you see at car washes. Yes. Which is strange. Did you ever go to a car wash . Of course. I go. The boy goes to a car wash. I find car washes very satisfying. I like to try to sit in them. Right. But when you look out down at times square, its just rows of these figures going like this. Lets talk about baby wyatt. He is how old now . 8 months. He is 8 months old, super cute. Throw up the stills. This was a year my life changed. There he is. He looks a little buddha like in that photo. He always does. He has andersons peepers. And look at your arms are looking great there. Well, no. Thank you. Having viewings for you. He is such a good kid. He is so melo. So melo. I know. He didnt get your i know. He is so cheerful and happy. He sleeps. I hate to say this he sleeps like 12 hours a night. Now i feel like wyatt is Baby New Year. Okay . So i think we have a little wyatt as Baby New Year [ laughter ] there he is. That is his laugh. Part of that is his giggle. Okay. Yeah. We couldnt get the rights to wyatt so we had to make a fake now every time you see Baby New Year run across the screen no, no. No. I think that is a fun little no that is not appropriate. That is completely inappropriate. We did everything virtually this year. All of us were on Zoom Fighting with our parents all year and having fun, little Cocktail Parties on zoom. Really . And i was doing, watch what happens, live from home for many months and had the pleasure of having anderson on one night. My son ben actually met wyatt on air for the first time. They met virtually. Yes. So much of what happened this year was virtual. We have a clip of that actually. This was like early on. Wyatt was like im andy joined by Anderson Cooper. And my son benjamin and anderson is with wyatt. I thought it would be fun if they met right now. Look. Thats going to be your good buddy wyatt. Thats benjamin. Have you boys ever been to brazil . I think he was like a couple, like a week or so old at that point. Wyatt . I think so. It was very early on. It was early on. And it is not going to be full baby talk the next four and a half hours. I know its its tiresome at best. Im getting bored. But like every cliche is true. He changes so fast. Yes. I didnt recognize who that baby was. I didnt recognize you. Because im finding out all these things about anderson. Weve spent so much time kind of killing time between naps together which is absolutely what we do together now. The post covid, the long covid, thats what really got me. Thats when i it was as if i was in constant fog. I couldnt think clearly. I had no hand eye communication. And it was really bad. It is a cashless bar. You can only pay in milk bones. This is the bar at maralago . Not the bar at maralago. Yeah, i think the biggest thing that people came away misunderstanding, thinking that sanctuaries and zoos are the same. And theyre absolutely not. Sanctuaries dont want to be in business. We are rescuing animals from horrible situations and giving them a forever home. Whereas these Roadside Zoos are constantly pimping out cubs and causing so much grief for the animals. There couldnt be anything further apart than zoos and sanctuaries. And i think people really came away thinking that they were the same. And for all the pain it caused, tiger king had an enormous Silver Lining in just creating awareness of the issue that there are all these animals living in horrible conditions and the people who do these operations are obviously a disreputable group of people. And you know, that helped us get the big cat Public Safety act through the house at the end of the year, which was huge. Whoo. And really tees us up to get it passed all right. There is a need to collectively engage and take care with each other. We cant get through crisis alone and that this latest crisis, this latest mountain we are all climbing, we have to do it together or else there is no way over the top. We are never really alone and hopefully thats something well take to the other side of this moment we are in right now is to Pay Attention to the people who dont have somebody else to care for them or be with them. You may be that person in a moment is what we just learned in the past nine months. When i was 10, i was watching new years eve with my brother and my dad was in the hospital. We were on the floor sleeping in the same room. My dad died five days later. I remember watching that in 1978 with fear and terror, there was something about it forever infected the way i thought of new years from then on. I think about people every year when i do the show who are watching in their homes and particularly this year who they lost a Family Member or someone they love is in the hospital and god knows we know the hospitals are full of icus all around the country. I just think it is important ton a night like this when people are celebrating for those of us who have experienced loss or those who are currently watching this with fear in their hearts or sadness in their hearts. I think it is always important to recognize them and to know that you are so right that they are not alone and we are not alone in this. We have to be together. And my dad died five days later and my life changed very much after that. But i remember thinking there was something about watching that new years celebration. Its one of the reasons i started working on new years because i there is something about the kind of phony levity and sort of i dont know excitement of new years that as a young kid who had lost, was about to lose somebody i found very scary and i think there are a lot of people out there tonight who have lost somebody this year or whose loved one is in the hospital right now and dont know what the next year holds and i, you know, i think for both andy and i, we are thinking about you on this night and this is a place where First Responders are and people who have been on the front lines of this pandemic. Well, first of all its great to be here with you guys. The year as we all know has been challenging to say the least. I was really happy to be able to connect with as i call them the lamily they call themselves and obviously the book having the success and the critical acclaim that its had. Its been my whole lifes journey to actually write the book, be able to share my weird life story with everybody and i think it brought just in terms of me as an artist closer to a lot of people who maybe didnt get me or didnt understand, you know, my dysfunctional upbringing and how that transcended things for me as a kid, a broke little biracial girl who grew up with nothing and then being able to have the type of things youre talking about with this year. But obviously the highlight is now because were leaving 2020 and hopefully having a better experience for us all. You know . Anderson, i feel like i saw you every day because all i did was watch cnn this entire time. Oh, wow. Im thrilled by that. I read your book. I was so well written and your story is so incredible and it was just a beautiful, a good, powerful book. It wasnt, i didnt know what to expect and i was blown away by it. Reviewers were as well. The number one best seller. Congratulations on that. Such a huge accomplishment. How do you celebrate new years eve . Is it a moment . Typically its a moment. I just want to speak to the fact aye mckayla angela davis and im glad you brought that up. I know you guys used to Work Together for a minute. Yeah. She is amazing and we had the best Creative Experience working on this book. Im kind of like always for new years eve, yes it is a moment. Weve had good moments, bad moments, weve had moments but they are what they are. This year its all about were here me and my family very close family unit, weve been together this whole time during covid just figuring it out how to exist and be festive during these times so here we are. I hope you guys like it, what we created for you. You know, just making it fun. We cant be with you. We didnt leave new york for like five months me and the kids. I kind of feel a little bit detached from my roots but i love being here in aspen especially for christmas. I have not let christmas die yet. Everybody wants to kill me because the Christmas Music is still on 24 7. Nor should it. As it snows im listening to Nat King Cole as it snows and i feel like i got a bonus this year, you know, extended christmas i got to ask you about all i want for christmas is you because it keeps breaking so many records and so many records in the spotify thing the most streamed song ever in a day on spotify. When you recorded all i want for christmas is you did you have a sense it was going to live for so long . It is one of those songs that you listen to and it still sounds like a brand new song. Its as fresh every time you listen to it as the first time. Thank you. Well first of all, i hate to always say this but as a writer i wrote that song and when i think about it i know. Yeah you said recorded so i had to clarify for the folks at home. As you should. Andy, you know. But im really proud of it in terms of that. Really, its because when i first wrote it i was like i just want to write about whatever makes me feel like what i wanted to hear as a little kid when i wanted my christmases to be fun and festive and they werent necessarily. You please be what i mean . So thats why as ive grown i feel like ive grown up with it, too. I was kind of little when i first wrote it. Littler in many ways but, yeah. I just have grown to love it more and more i think because ive experienced life with it as a listener but also as someone that its really my i put everything into it. I never knew it was going to be this big but im thankful. I know that much. Yaefrjts. You released the rarities from your vault. Tell us about it. Okay. So yeah. We got jlo behind us actually. I want to hear about ariana grande. She said in her new Netflix Documentary she got so emotional talking about what an influence you were for her and how she learned to sing by mimicking you. You know, now you came out with a song with her. It was so great seeing the two of you together on your Christmas Special. Talk to me about that. That was amazing. The Christmas Special was an incredible moment working with apple and all the folks who were there. I loved working with ariana and i wrote the song oh, santa and thought it would be cute as a girl thing. I rearranged it and figured out how it was going to go and we filmed it. By the way, yay apple tv plus because just getting through like we had the concept to do the special in february. I had it a year before and then being able to do it during covid, film it, we all had to be tested every day. Everybody was on set like who could be wearing shields and masks and everything. As you guys know, the only reason i dont have a mask on is my shield is right over there. I asked for it but they didnt give it to me. Everybody else has their mask and shield and i say thank you to everybody who participated in the special because we made it through the rain and like so glad for the success of that. And looking forward to more to come and just hopeful for a way better 2021 for the world. You please be whknow what i mea . Yeah. What is your wish for everybody out there . A lot of folks have had a really tough year. Its going to be a tough year for a long time this year. Theres obviously a vaccine coming. Hope is on the horizon. Whats your hope for the new year . Well i think its everybodys. I would imagine its everybodys hope. Healing for our country, for the world, unity. Weve seen so much despair this past year which has always been sort of their always been there under the surface. And i was grateful to be able to release my memoir, which dealt with so many issues of race and identity and, you know, just classism and things that i have gone through as a human being and then of course as a celebrity, whatever that means. And i think, you know, all of us have kind of come together a little bit more this year. My hope or wish is we continue to do so. Obviously we all are ready for a new moment in terms of being hopeful about the vaccine and being hopeful for all of those and thinking about and wishing just the best of everything for those who have been affected by covid, those who went through so much pain and who are still going through so much pain. Were celebrating. Were festive. I think were hopeful for better times. You know, you mentioned the memoir. The ball is not dropping yet. I have to ask you what was, you know, you were so revealing in the memoir and people thought that they knew so much about you. What, was there one thing that you think people took away from the memoir that they didnt know about you or were surprised about you . I dont know that there is one thing. I think there are many things, andy. It was a lot. Yeah. Again, i put so much into it and then the world turned upside down and we were dealing with these very timely issues that people were like oh, why are you suddenly talking about this now . As you know this has been a labor of love. We worked on the book for a good two and a half, three years prior to it coming out. And then it was just all of a sudden this kind of relief but also i didnt want people to be like oh, now she wants to jump on this band wagon or talk about that or whatever. No. Its just hard to encapsulate a lifetime in a tenminute interview or when we are on watch what happens live were not sitting here talking about serious issues because nobody wants to be, you dont want to be debby downer. A lot of people talk that talk, but for me, the chapter is called a family and thats what theyve become for me. Because its not just here i am, you know, you know, listen to my records. Look at me on the video. Whatever. Its really that they kind of validated my existence because i was really that little kid that didnt feel like i belonged anywhere.
