Reported yesterday and a top Infectious Disease expert says its about to get worse. Power lunch starts right now and welcome to power lunch everybody, the election shifting towards joe biden today. He took the lead in the counts in georgia and pennsylvania. Lets go to eamon javers to break down where we stand right now. Were stel loill looking at e same list of uncalled races. Joe bidens lead is increasing weve had more vote now coming in today from pennsylvania, moe are vote out from nevada in pennsylvania bidens lead over trump has grown to more than 13,000 votes. Take a look at the state of pennsylvania we are about 96 complete. Too close to call there. The difference there 13,220. Thats the whole ball game if joe biden wins there, this race is over because thats 20 electoral votes. Biden only needs 17 at this point to go over the top in nevada, press conference just wrapped up in clark county, home to Las Vegas Biden expanded his lead there and is up to 20,000 overall in the state. Look at that, joe biden, this is nevada, clark county, 53. 6 for biden, 44. 7 for trump there with 93 of the vote in in clark county we got a statement from the president of the United States indicating hes not willing to give up the fight. I want to read you the key sentence from what the president said he said we will pursue this process through every aspect of the law to guarantee that the American People have confidence in our government. I will never give up fighting for you and our nation so the Trump Campaign signaling with that statement a defiant attitude toward a lot of whats going on around the country, as a lot of people are thinking that joe biden is inching closer to the presidency, donald trump saying no, hes not, were going to fight this thing. That sets up a dramatic legal showdown in the coming days. Whats the timeline in the near term . Were getting updates nearly hourly at this point each state is handling it slightly differently we do get these press conferences in states every couple of hours. It could be days the philadelphia officials said it could be days before theyve counted all the provisional ballots and have a final tally thats not unusual what usually happens in a normal year and this is very much not a normal year is the Television Networks and Wire Services get enough data coming in from these states to though its beyond the margin of error and theres no possible way for one candidate or the other to win this thing thats when youll start to see Network Decision desks making those calls. Nbc news has not made those calls yet. Too much data is coming in from places where it indicates that either candidate has a chance in those states once the Networks Start to make those calls, i think the politics of this starts to Transition One thing were going to be watching for is whether or not joe biden addresses the nation tonight. I was told earlier today that we should not expect to see biden during the course of the day today, but likely this evening that could change if we dont have any calls so everything is fluid but the Biden Campaign very much wants to watch and wait here and make sure they have all their ducks in a row before they jump out and say anything with their candidate on a national stage. Yeah. Eamon javers with the latest this hour. Tyler. Georgia very important in the president ial race but absolutely crucial in determining the balance of power in the Senate Republican candidates are currently holding leads in the two races in that state, which if those results hold would give the republicans 50 seats the democrats have 48 with two Georgia Senate races likely heading to runoff votes in january. Ylan is following those races for us now this could be democrats last hope of winning the Senate Majority the runoff between purdue and ossoff has been a nail biter nbc has them at 49. 8 but has not made a final call yet. Ossoff declared today he is ready for round two. We have all the momentum. We have all the energy were on the right side of history. Yall ready to work . [ cheers and applause the second race pits gop senator Kelly Leffler against pastor wornock if democrats win both of those seats, they will control the senate if joe biden wins the white house and that means theyll get to set the agenda. Republicans so far have been careful not to declare victory just yet and even today Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell said hes not sure hes going to be able to keep his title. Back to you. So let me understand it here. The split is 50 gop and 48 to the democrats. The democrats have to win the two to tie at 50 if biden holds the lead in the white house race, then Vice President Kamala Harris would break the tie. But if it breaks the republican way, it would be 5248 gop, right . Thats right. Youve got the math right there, tyler. This is really important not just for legislative agenda but also for who biden can even put in his cabinet in democrats hold the majority, they only need 50 votes to confirm who his cabinet picks can be and end up crafting his agenda over the next four years, if he does in fact win the white house. Candidates, judges, the whole ball of wax. Thanks very much, ylan and i think 18yearolds can vote in the runoff well learn more about it between now and then how is it all playing out in the markets . We are down today but just slightly this is after a 7 jump over the previous four trading sessions lets bring in bob pisani for more a bit of a pause today but still a remarkable week, not only here in the United States but even abroad. Lets take a look at the dow leadership this is really a flattish, defensive move today with pfizer, walmart. Whenever you see these stocks, procter gamble, in the lead, thats a very defensive Leadership Group health care is lagging a little bit. United healths up 14 this week its had a huge run up on the prospect of less regulation overall in that particular space. I want to point out one of the things thats happening this week is Energy Stocks are not dramatically participating in the rally. Oil is stick around 37, 38, it flies around in that area. Its down again today and you see all these oil stocks, which have had modest rises this week all down today the slowing Global Growth story and the pandemic has not gone aw away International Etfs have generally done very well and its curious to see that the whole Global Market is lifted a lot of traders tell me this is on prospects for improved global trade sentiment in general under biden. Well talk about that more on monday its important to understand there are several components to this rally the most important thing is no major tax hikes out there on the corporate or individual level likely, less regulation of tech and health care, stimulus coming sooner rather than later, indications of course from the senate theyre willing to deal on that. Of course we had the major Central Banks talking about stimulus as well tyler, back to you robert, thank you very much the market taking a little bit of a breather this day but as the election haze clears, what are the biggest risks to stocks . Joining us to discuss is lindsey belle, and ron enson, a Senior Adviser to schroeders ydo i assume that this weeks rally is because there doesnt look like theres going to be a blue wave . Yeah. I mean, i think that is really a fair assumption. Initially last week i did think that the covid case increase was having an impact on the market and that simply really wasnt the fact when you think about what we saw this week. I mean, were crossing 100,000 cases over the last couple days and the market still isnt flinching. So i really think the market is really morning concerned about what policy can come across to help the market and the economy and individual consumers more so than they are about how the vaccine will impact the economic environment. I think theres still the belief out there that theres not going to be major shutdowns like we saw earlier this year. There might be city and state regulations and changes that impact some businesses but overall the economic environment going into 2021, people remain very optimistic about. Ron, should they be you know, im of a mixed mind on that, tyler with respect to the spike in the coronavirus cases here in the United States and europe, you can make the case that, you know, the best economic numbers now from the recovery are behind us and that as a consequence, you know, we may not see considerable acceleration and job growth, for instance, particularly, although this weekend is aberrational to you in the northeast, as we get into the cold weather months, it will be harder to keep open some of those smaller businesses that operate in leashi ileisure and hospitality. And if we do not get state and local assistance from the federal government, you can expect more layoffs. We saw that in the data today. 900,000 private sector jobs were created but 600,000 was the net. If you start seeing state and local layoffs, we could back pedal on growth very easily. I think you saw that not necessarily in equity markets around the world but certainly in Interest Rate markets overseas im more concerned these days about main street than i am about welfare reform street. Thats what i was going to drive in on there. The markets say one thing about the big publicly traded economy. Main street says quite another when you drive down in streets in my area, theres a lot of real estate for lease. Its not reflective whats happening literal little on main street where Small Businesses are still struggling, dont have additional access to the payroll p Protection Program or other forms of relief. As measured by the jobless reports this morning going up, not going down thats problematic Going Forward for the economy as well. If theres a skinny package as the current Senate Majority leader argued today, we might not have acceleration. I think the markets may have its mind made up on a certain policy issue Going Forward but they dont reflect some of the underlying damage being done to the economy that could last quite a white. November and december are traditionally the sweetest months for stocks, but this november and december there might be a bit of a pall over the market if the race runs into a protracted and angry legal wrangle. Talk me through it we always look forward to the santa claus rally tend of the year, november and december have historically been the best perform being moning months fork market in most years, including election years so we look forward to that but we do think volatility will be a mainsta mainstay of this market over the next couple months and thats because of a lot of the things that you and ron just spoke about. It seems like the market is ignoring the risks theyre concerns and risks that have been around for several months now were talking about stimulus, about another wave of covid cases, about the timing and distribution of a vaccine or treatments so its a lot of the same rhetoric and then you add in a potential legal battle related to the election and that adds another element of uncertainty for investors. So we recommend that our customers, you know, take this rally in stride. Were go 2 off the highs that we saw in september and thats a pretty good place to be. And were optimistic about next year, but dont get too comfortable here is what we would say. All right lindsey, thanks very much. Have a great weekend ron, you, too. Enjoy the nice weather, folks. Kelly. Tyler, coming up, we are all over the battleground states with six races still uncalled. Well bring you the latest numbers. Plus a betterthanexpected jobs report pointing to a steady economic recovery. But could could that progress be derailed marc morial will join us to talk about that next. We have been watching a huge spike in coronavirus cases, 120,000 new cases reported yesterday, according to johns hopkins. Thats another daily record. Lets go to meg tirrell for more on this spike. The number of cases were reporting, we passed the 100,000 new daily cases just yesterday this is so much bigger that anything we saw in the summer and back in the spring these date wa come on the covid tracking project, they report on a state basis. Any way you look at it, we are going into the wrong direction headed into the colder months. If you look at the total cumulative cases in the United States, were up at 9. 6 million now, quickly approaching 10 million. On this pace, well hit 10 million by tuesday its down to ten days it takes to hit the million number. It this is the biden harris plan. Theyve got seven points here. Number one is improving testing and Contact Tracing in this country. They also say they want to produce more personal protective equipment, talking about using the defense production act third is giving National Guidance and resources to schools and Small Businesses fourth, vaccines and treatments, including a 25 billion plan for Vaccine Distribution and manufacturing. Five, protect highrisk groups and since is reestablishing the Surveillance Systems in place and reestablishing our relationship with the World Health Organization and seventh are mask mandates. Theyre talking about working with states and local governments to implement them there. Ive been talking with people about this plan and dr. Scott gottlieb gave me interesting feedback he was fda commissioner in the Trump Administration a couple years ago. He calls the plan thoughtful and particularly focuses on the testing part of the plan saying, among other things, the intense focus on testing will mean more will take precautions to limit their contagion. Thats going to reduce spread. Guys meg, thats all well and good but if joe biden succeeds in becoming president , he doesnt take office until january 20 and there could be millions more cases by then. I just observed that you know that as well as i do. Let me ask you about hospitalizations and deaths. How are they trending across the country as case counts go up they are going up as well we now have more than 53,000 americans in the hospital. Deaths are rises in addition, there are reported 1,200 deaths across the country yesterday. On the sevenday average its rising more than 750 the good news is the number of deaths is not anywhere near as high as it was back in the spring there are multiple studies showing we have gotten better at treating covid19. The concern is that as cases mount and hospitalizations mount, Health Care Systems get overwhelmed and it gets harder to give everybody that same level of great care. Thats why the cases need to be stopped in order to get a lid on this thing thank you very much, meg. Kelly. On that note, lets bring in micha michael osterholm. Its good to have you. The big question on everybodys minds, are we talking about this winter lockdowns, curfews, those kind of mitigation efforts or are we able to cope with this pandemic and keep the economy open this time around . First of all, we have to understand that the term lockdown means a lot of Different Things to different people and how are we going to respond and what does an uncontrolled pandemic do to the economy by itself, even if you dont do anything in terms of official government action. I think the Important Message here, as meg just laid out, we are seeing this very rapid increases in cases at labor day, we were at 32,000 cases a day. Today were at 120,000 case as day. My prediction is that number is going to go much higher that be 120,000 each day hospitalizations will ten contie to increase substantially. Many Health Care Systems will be overrun in the next three to 14, 15, weeks. And finally, the other piece about this that isnt being talked about is the fact that weve identified 40 drugs right now that are really key to treating patients who have covid19 not the kind of drugs you think of in terms of regeneral rjenng regeneron and like that. Of thousands 49, 20 are in shortage status and other countries wanting those drugs largely coming from china, were going to see real decreases in quality of care over the course of the next few months as we run out of those drugs, too. So this is not a good picture at all. Based on what youre saying, we should do shutdowns, stayathome measures today nationwide how do we go about trying to keep this disease from spreading so quickly i would agree with you 100 let me add context to this so many people have equated lockdowns as some kind of restriction on their personal freedom or financial ruin. And i understand particularly the latter one the president of the Minneapolis Federal reserve bank and i wrote an oped piece in the New York Times predicting whats happening would happen the only thing to do is stay at home, close bars and restaurants but because the savings rate had increased so substantially during the pandemic and Interest Rates being so low, we could borrow that money from ourselves and begin to cover the cost of this which in itself financially would be the way to really invest in our future if we look at the Asian Countries right now, theyve done that and theyve done it very well. Look at whats happening over there. The virus is under control, their economies are booming and theyre not having people die. So i think we could take a major out of that, use what we had recommended in the august oped piece and make a big difference. My concern is i dont see any political appetite for doing that and thats a tricky thing, i think, to propose and carry out. Still, we take your point about how much worse this could get. Thanks for joining us today. Well have to take it day by day and see what further measures people come up with. Tyler, back to you thank you, kelly. Still ahead, a run in the Retail Stocks this week gap, macys, nordstrom all higher could it be signaling a strong Holiday Shopping season plus Aurora Cannabis up after four states legalize marijuana but is the outlook smoking more power lunch after the break. Still ahead on power lunch we continue to monitor the results of the 2020 election as candidate joe biden has taken a lead in key states plus stocks lower despite a stronger than expected jobs report as the election uncertainty continues, nasdaq is up in positive territory well speak to former new orleans mayor marc morial about all of those issues when power lunch returns. Lets give you a quick market check right now i would call the markets in a defensive shell as we go into the weekend. The industrials with slight losses, the s p and nasdaq with the slimmest of gains and russell 2000 moving down about a half percent a number of industrial names hitting record highs today, deere, honeywell, Ingersoll Rand and illinois tool all up higher. Oil is down for the day. Eric a 4 declean for wti and brent under similar pressure. Cl pretty decent week everyoni incg closer to that 40 a barrel number the u. S. Reports record coronavirus numbers and other countries see their case counts rise as well that has investors very concerned for the demand outlook. Eric, thank you very much lets go to sue herera for a news update. Heres your election update at this hour nevada Election Officials say there are still 63,000 mailin ballots and additional provisional baulgts provisio al ballots the majority of mailin ballots may not be counted until sunday. Election workers remain concerned about their safety following protests outside their offices. In pennsylvania protests continue as joe bidens lead grows. It is now more than 13,000 votes with an estimated 96 of the ballots counted. Across the pond, british Prime Minister Boris Johnson refusing to comment on the election but did express support for the election process. I have every confidence in the checks and balances of the american constitution. You are up to date. Thats the election update this hour, ty see you next hour. Back to you. He has a distinctive air style, doesnt he, sue yeah, thats a good word for it distinctive. Original thats a word for it, original the president has been chipping away at joe bidens lead ever since tuesday night. Jane wells is live in phoenix. Jane hey, tyler. Its been a boisterous, passionate meeting outside the Maricopa County Elections Office folks have been here for about four hours now theyre in a fenced off area called the free speech zone, but the numbers we got out from Maricopa County this morning cut joe bidens lead to about 43,000 votes. Heres whats interesting. Take a look at the live picture inside this building where votes are being counted. A little over 51 went for trump, 46 for joe biden that is a tighter ratio than weve been seeing. Its believed trump needs to get 58 of the remaining 240,000 remaining votes in arizona to win. But the folks outside here rallying for the president say they just dont believe a biden win would be legitimate. They base that belief in part on the massive turnout trump rallies have received compared to the former president. Theres a lot of trump support. Now theyre going to tell me that biden wins this state b. S. It aint happening reporter do you have any evidence this isnt a battle between two parties. Its a battle between god and satan. The results are the results as long as theyre fair, legal and certified. Reporter back to you a battle between god and satan, jane. That tells you the level of polarity in the United States today. Talk us through a little bit of this kerfuffle known as sharpygate. At least one arizona resident said her vote was rejected because she used a sharpy and it was rejected by the machine. The county is saying they prefer sharpies because its the fattest drying ink out there and even if it does bleed through to the other side, the way the ballots are set, theyre intentionally offset so you cannot vote for somebody on the other side of the ballot but it continues to be a very real issue to the people here, even though the secretary of state says it is a nonissue. Jane wells, thank you very much we appreciate it kelly as we await the outcome of the president ial election, the jobs report for october this morning came in better than expected it comes, though, as covid cases are rising and a stimulus deal is uncertain mark morial is the ceo and president of the National Urban league before we get into that, mr. Mayor, we were just speaking about this election and what do you think the mandate is from voters here . Is a Joe Biden White house, lets call it, possibly Republican Senate or a very close call one that is a repudiation of socialism and did those concerns that came up on the democratic call in the house this week kind of tell you that the party needs to maybe tack back in a different direction . I dont think so socialism was ever on the ballot i think that was just an argument being made. I think what the American People want is, one, they want to get covid under control, which is a prerequisite to rebuilding an economy that works for everyone. We can do those two things at the same time if theres a National Plan to deal with covid, a National Plan to bring the economy back the job numbers today are good but were still only halfway back from where we were in the beginning of the year. Theres still many, Many Americans who are unemployed, many who are underemployed, many facing eviction and foreclosure. I think the mandate for the voters will be a strong mandate to do both things, address covid in a responsible way, in a way that helps to protect lives, while at the same time rebuilding the economy we need another robust stimulus. Much of the Economic Growth weve seen, people dont forget, there was trillions of dollars pumped into the economy and even trillions more by the fed if you take a combination of the bills passed by congress and the actions of the fed substantial efforts have been made, rightfully so, to basically stabilize and prop up the economy. But much more is needed. I agree with fed chair powell who said additional stimulus is needed i think in a biden administration, well get a strong, strong effort around infrastructure, around housing, around those things that are going to really truly bring jobs, good paying jobs back to the American People. Let me rephrase it one more time to your point, socialism is a loaded word. Would you say the party has gotten too progressive no, i think the Democratic Party is no different than the Republican Party there are many, many factions. These parties are coalitions people may not identify with the party, but the test is who can put the broadest coalition together if you get a biden victory, its because whe had a broad coalition, regionally, geographically one could say the Democratic Party is socialist another could say the Republican Party is fascist i refuse to deal in those sorts of terms because i think those terms themselves are indeed divisive if we get into a name calling, finger pointing effort. I think both parties had an emphasis in this election, they stood for Different Things, both candidates and now Going Forward the important thing may be to lower some of the rhetoric and get a focus on the issues that the American People want our government, be they red or blue, be they left or right, to focus on in the 21st century on the sort of issue of jobs, mr. Mayor, its interesting to see that there was more support amongst the black community for trump this time around than there was four years ago and your comments from your colleague bob johnson earlier this week was talking about some of the reasons that he thought that might be the case but what does is say to you . Does it open up kind of the possibility of the Republican Party making more inroads . I think its a misplaced emphasis, kelly. To say he went from 7 to 15 of the africanamerican vote. Let me tell you what the facts are. A quarter of a million more people voted in philadelphia, milwaukee, detroit and atlanta this time than did in 2016, significant increases in africanamerican turnout is one of the stories of this election in these swing states. And i think trying tosuggest the Republican Party for years has fundamentally ignored the Africanamerican Community i can tell you there was a time when i had Many Republican relationships on capitol hill. At some point it cogot completey shut down. If the Republican Party or any party wants to embrace any community, theyve got to talk to the leaders of the community, theyve got to embrace the community not just around the election but on a consistent basis. And that is what the future is and so i think that its important for people to understand the story of this election is not donald trump picking up a few extra africanamerican votes the story of this election is significantly enhanced turnout among africanamericans who were repelled by the failure to denounce white susupremacy we have to keep this in term of what the conversation is in the communi community. Yeah. Fair enough. Again, illsts a move at the margin significant to some. I know youre saving its not the whole story. Thank you so much, mr. Mayor, for joining us weve seen you a number of times on cnbc. We appreciate the extra time today. Marc morial joining us to talk politics and the economy ty all right kelly, markets today taking a little bit of a breather after this huge rally this week. Best in many, many months. All the major markets are on pace for their best weeks since march. To be specific, more on the markets coming right up as the s p right there down five points well be right back with more power lunch. What do you look for when you trade . I want free access to research. Yep, td ameritrades got that. Free access to every platform. Mhm, yeah, that too. I dont want any trade minimums. Yeah, i totally agree, they dont have any of those. I want to know what im paying upfront. Yes, absolutely. Do you just say yes to everything . Hm. Well i say no to kale. Mm. Yeah, they say if you blanch it its better, but that seems like a lot of work. Now offering zero commissions on online trades. We charge you less so you have more to invest. To the bond market and the cme we go where Rick Santelli is tracking all the action. Hi. Its been a wild week, if you look at the two day 10s, it looks like rates are going up. You can see its been a twoway trade. As it sits at 81 1 2 basis points, we really closed the gap on the week with regard to the h regard to how much ground the treasury selloff pushed rates back up. If we look at our tenyears versus european tenyears since the end of august it is nearly the same t look at the dollar versus the chinese yuan that summarizes the weakness in the dollar kelly back to you. Thank you Rick Santelli. We cant yet call a winner between President Trump and joe biden. Cnbc can declare that pot stocks were the big winners in this election Aurora Cannabis is up 50 today, 10 this wk. Ee can these stocks keep flying high thats next on power lunch. Possibility stocks are smoking on the potential of a biden presidency after four more states voted to legalize Recreational Use earlier this week Aurora Cannabis is leading the charge, up over 50 just today will these stocks continue aaccident . Is it just a green mirage . Tim seymour is the cio of see more asset empty he is here are those stocks a toke or a joke hey, tyler. You have every pun working today, tyler definitely not a joke. What i want to point out about the move, especially about the canadian names the last couple days and week and around u. S. Elections it highlights really the absurdity of how the pot stocks traded because the Canadian Companies are on u. S. Markets and you want to own the u. S. Names aurora which is up 60 today it was a 150 stock two years ago and 15 now tells you that i think the trade on u. S. Market the fact that the elections brought in five new states, three of which are conservative states sending a message the legislators on both sides of the aisle is really the story here the fact that new jersey voted of aaticly to bring in a eel market cuomo is talking about the tax benefits from cannabis we have a backdrop where the Addressable Market is the u. S. This is not to lean on canada. The problem with the cannabis trade we are an investment show the cannabis trade was distorted by the fact that u. S. Exchanges cant list the best u. S. Companies. So the top five u. S. Multistate operators are either trading through alltime highs like gti or teracen which is up 200 this year because they are making money. You are not so bad as word play you said that the governor of connecticut was ready to roll. Just saying. Good for you. Lets talk about volatility in these names if the stock goes from 150 to 10 or 15, and now its up 58 in a day, can it come back down again . Thats scary. If you buy these guys, should you be ready for a rough ride . Yeah. Investors need to understand the companies that have the best Balance Sheets and the companies that ultimately are positioned to win in and out. One of the good things maybe about no gop senate is in short run it keeps a moat around the businesses that are the most Profitable Companies we have had on this network gti, creditsco labs, pure leaf they have earnings coming up, you are going to see the ebitda. But the profitability for they companies is growing 25, 30 thats the story here. Be careful of the stocks that have had the biggest move and be looking for the best Balance Sheet and fundamentals. Are you working tonight. Im off but i know they are fired up for you. Tim seymour, have a great weekend. Kelly . See you. Coming after this quick break the dow is lower thats perhaps not surprising given this weeks monster rally. Maybe more surprising stocks arent pulling back more after an 8 gain more on that after this quick break here on power lunch. Sales are down from last quarter but we are hoping things will pick up by q3. Yeah. Uh. Boss doug . Sorry about that. Umm. What. Its. Um. Boss you alright . Closing bell starts right now. You too. Good afternoon, and welcome to the closing bell. Im wilfred frost along with sara eisen a much calmer day on wall street, the major afternoons making relatively strong moves still on track with a strong week with the s p 500 on pace for its best gains since april for the week lets look at what is driving the action first the election the race remains uncalled according to nbc news with joe biden holding 253 ec votes to trumps 214. Biden gained the lead in pennsylvania and geo
