After jay powell made down beat comments about the economy just as coronavirus cases were spiking in the south and the west today the fed chief once again made it clear that the economy remains weak and were seeing more gigantic coronavirus spikes in the south and west this time the dow surged 527 points as it jumped 1. 90 , nasdaq pole vaulted 1. 57 . How is this possible how is it possible goes down gigantically, same thing, next time goes up two key differences. First the fed is planning to buy individual Corporate Bonds to ensure Companies Stay afloat if we had survival of the f fittest, powell is doing everything to limit carnage, survival of everybody. Second, we had the biggest sales gain in history up 17 in may. That sounds very vish we have a super accommodating fed at the same time were Getting Better data which means the recovery has staying power and almost broke oil company or restaurant chain wants to issue bonds, the fed would probably buy them i know there are a lot of skeptics who find this whole movement flat out fraudulent fueled by clueless armatures created by a slap happy fed desperate to print germanylike money to avoid mass unemployment if you listen to the bigtime Hedge Fund Managers that come on the network, they make it sound like it the homost dangerous market theyve seen. The thing is those armature momentum changers made a fortune and the bears that kept you out of incredible gains. Late last week it looked like we would have a reckoning what is really happening where are we headed . If you want to understand this moment, look at stocks from my best teachers. Marty and i watched him on fridays when hed go on the wall street week and i hold on to every one of his words. I said hold on other panelists and let marty talk he made sense of the stock market for the beginner, the newbie, for me w why . Investors collective reaction to the tape basically, he did what i tried to do for you every night but i am a devoted pupil what would he say about this moment i can hear his low voice saying dont fight the tape dont fight the fed. Let me spell these two commandments out dont fight the fed means you cannot bet against the fed already reserve chairman who is committed to getting the economy going and therefore the stock market going last week powell gave us bad news, throwing in the towel and recovery like he had done all he can. He has to wait and see uhuh. No mood for that wait and see move this time, though, powell goes all in basically assures us there will be no more bankruptcies no bankruptcies . That means no layoffs from Healthy Companies short on cash and cant raise money. Now everybody saves sadly Small Business can raise money that the huge. In the Great Depression we worried about the banks failing and they failed and things got worse. We were worried about banks failing and they failed and things got worse b ben, this time powell didnt wait for everything to fall apart. He moved aggressively to protect the banks and back stopping their largest clients, too that the great for the banks and clients. That is dont fight the fed. What about his second commandment . Dont fight the tape this is hard to understand i had, like, 10 when i first heard it, im like whats the tape . Scotch tape . My dad sold scotch tape. Its what is going on in the market doctor there is a lot of green in the tape 3 m and you get it, right . I would go down on the floor and do it but this say really nice suit why this happened . Even though i could do it anyway ill just get it cleaned all right. Im down here now with the tape. You see me with the tape, right . Even though covid cases see it underneath me even though covid cases are spiking, there is a mild steroid you can take that you dramatically lower the mortality rate for the worst cases. The people who need breathing help off the shelf drug that costs almost nothing i know like a 5 copay job at walgreens. Suddenly this virus is a lot less deadly and influenced the tape the tape is underneath me. Im caressing the tape and making the tape feel better than it did then we got the incredible where is the clorox wipes . Who knows whats down there. Let me get the incredible retail sales up 17 clorox up 17 . As the fed is throwing gasoline on the kings ford, thats a clorox product, they are red hot and you get money looking for a home and it finds itself on that tape that i just car raessed so lovingly oh, clorox, thank you. See you cant beat the army of buyers when they come in to love the tape you cant. Dont fight this thing down here now from the newbies who probably think there really is a tape underneath me because they know so little and watching date vee thing, im buying the cruise stocks all down ten today and airlines single digit, they should be buying things like apple. Buy one share. What is that the new fractional thing . Apple is flying. It was on a buy recommendation i love the guy. I love the guy super guy. But it had nothing new it didnt matter how about the infrastructure bill more on that later possibility customers must be returning to previously closed stores how else do you get the 17 gain you got a bullish tape there we go. It underneath me in case you cant find it. Oh, baby, ah only a tape would take an ah baby with clorox, which is the most deadly thing ever thats why we love it. United airlines teamed up with clorox im flying unite d boy, my arms are tired it doesnt always mean you have to go with the flow and make contrary bets but when you get this bite when everything roars and you try to fight it, youre fighting history or youre certainly fighting history when the dow went down 1800 points last week. Is it possible for knew bnewbie understanding this, the cruise ships . No but it really ought to mean something to the bearish Hedge Fund Managers that spent months squaring people away from the stocks they fought this thing underneath me. They fought it they probably got shedded on thats never mind he pasted away before he could come on cnbc and would explain to these people including new people who keep buying Royal Caribbean. I cant do it as well, which is one reason im so easily hectored and made fun of and im down here with my suit wiping the floor with clorox wipes but i know what i know thats really smart. Dont fight the fed and dont fight this okay this thing that the underneath me sure, every now and then, theyll take a break like last thursday and they come back after their day off. You dont have to like it. I know most of you dont but the bottom line is that the fed and the tape are on the side of the bulls, not the bears. And yeah, theres massive unemployment its horrible. The disease is horrible. Everything is hobble it a horrible time but the pain of the recession happens to be distributed unequally. It hitting minority businesses it hitting Service Economy businesses it hitting my barber, my bakery and my local watering hole, which i happen to own. Its leaving host Large Enterprises unscathed and thats why publicly traded stocks can keep riding the wave so either surf or take your board and go home and most definitely do this every 35 seconds, because that really makes life great. All right. Lets go to sean in new york, sean caller hey, jim. A few weeks ago you had hanson on the show, a ceo of forth American Tankers and the stock is crashing since then what do you think of the they peaked they peaked. Oil went up really big the trade occurred and now you got to move on it was a trade it worked fabulously and then it peaked and thats been the way of all shipping trades. Which was a descent book, not a great book lets go to gwinnett in maryland gwinnett hi, jim im a firsttime caller and my husband and i are retired and living off dividend interest. Okay. I cant hold it against them that was a very good quarter they delivered i got to hand it to them, i think there is something there listen to me, this time im going to be smart. Im going to wear the cheapest mask, not the n 95, not the k 95 from china that im convinced does not work. Dont fight the fed and dont fight this thing underneath me called the tape and these two things are on the side of the bulls. On mad money, im sitting down with the ceo of mcdonalds following the covid19 shutdown. Is it time to start selling some of the sleep the pandemic plays . Can i find an Investment Firm with a truly longterm view thats been through multiple market cycles for over 85 years . With capital group, i can. Talk to your financial professional or consultant for investment risks and information. For this interview i told you smaller restaurants will be steam rolled by this covid19 i know that. Im in the business. Cant make money in the mandatory social distancing unless the government bails the little guys out, the future of the Restaurant Industry belongs to the big boys like mcdonalds, which is thousands of drivethrough lanes, great balance sheet. The golden arches released the mays sales, nobody seemed to care may numbers increased versus april and only down 5 95 of locations around the world have reopened in some capacity thats amazing in so many other hot stocks, it rallied 1 that the nuts. Let look with chris, the new president and ceo of mcdonalds and a clear picture where they are headed welcome back to mad money. Jim, thanks for having me on. Great to be here. Congratulations how are you able to get so many restaurants open at a time when Many Companies are struggle income your business to get 40 to 50 of them open . We have an incredible system. 95 of our restaurants are open. It a true team effort. I think this is where our franchise model is a huge advantage for us weve been able to work with all of them to put in place a number of safety procedures, and were well on our way to being almost 100 open. So its been a great team effort. Well, the team is also part of you because you have spent 200 million making sure your franchises are up to snuff thats got to be a terrific burden lifted from them knowing the main office is backing them. Yeah, for us, we want to make sure were doing everything we can to support the franchisescoe there is an opportunity for mcdonalds globally. We want to take share in every market the couple hundred Million Dollars you referenced is for additional marketing support for us to get after it for the balance of this year. Okay. Let talk about presentation where you talk about what has to go on inside its inside that im most worried about. I like to take my p. C. And mcdonalds, sit by myself, you know, not taking up the table. I have my mcmuffin and my wife her egg mcsa usa ge. Im wondering how many of me you can fit into a store and if there are people that say hey, you know what . I cant sit down. The safety of our customers is certainly something were spending a lot of time thinking about and making sure that we can provide them with the safe environment. Right now, we have about 1,000 of our restaurants in the u. S. Where the dine in is open and were doing a number of things there, social distancing certainly, making sure that we have enhanced sanitation in the restaurants, going g ting to contactless, a number of things there. Youre hitting on something which is certainly for the short term, its going to be a different environment in the dine in and right now weve only got 1,000 open we expect that number will grow over time but wont be back to the way things were precovid because there is still concern around safety and making sure were abiding by Health Measures others are suggesting. Chris, i thought we just needed a vaccine we really got to have a vaccine to get things back to normal. Totally agree i think until we have a vaccine, what weve seen in other markets, the consumers still going to be concerned about safety theyre going to be making kind of this unconscious cost benefit trade off. Right. We do need a vaccine. I think certainly our expectation is that a vaccine is probably, you know, call it 12 to 18 month ace ws away it doesnt mean it wont be developed but by the time its employed and approved, we got awhile before were post vaccine. What im shocked about, what people dont realize maybe because im in this business, how youve been able to get it so fast on the drivethrough what are you doing drivethrough has been really a fantastic asset for us 95 of our restaurants in the u. S. Have drivethrough. One of the things we did early on is we went to a limited menu and we made sure that the products that we were serving that we could do it as quickly as possible. Our drivethrough times are 25 seconds faster right now in part because of going to limited menu but also its really been a fullcourt press to make sure we have the proper positioning and all those other things we know how to run drivethroughs and i think our system has shown through the crisis we have more capacity than we realized going into it. I know ive spoken to you several times about, i wont hit you on beyond meat its very difficult come on i would miss it if you didnt. Okay. Maybe well go there i wanted a loyalty plan. You know you were there. Its very hard to slow down the line and yet, thats what a loyalty plan does. Youre right. We have loyalty in a number of other markets outside the u. S. Typically those have less drivethrough penetration. We are going to be looking and testing at how do we bring loyalty into heavy drivethrough markets like the u. S im pretty confident well figure it out but youre right, we have to make sure were enhancing the Customer Experience with the loyalty program. One sure fire way not to enhance the experience is slow it down how do we find that trade off . But i expect that well be able to announce something, you know, within a reasonable period of time that shows how were going to do that. Okay. I am going to ask you but first, something more important you have diversity at your company and board. How much does it mean for your company . Im sorry, i couldnt hear you on that one if you could come back one more time. You have great diversity on your board your company is always committed to diversity what does it mean for your bottom line to have that sure. I think for mcdonalds, diversity is something that is critically important for us, and frankly, i think because of the nature of our business, we have probably an extraordinary responsibility on this topic 70 of the crew in our restaurant are diverse from a race standpoint. Weve been on this for 50 years to try to make sure that we have the right diversity and inclusion programs im proud to say weve probably at mcdonalds created more millionaires in the black community than any corporation on the planet but there is still work to do were certainly not perfect. Were talking with franchises how do we continue to make sure were bringing in diverse franchises one of the things were doing on talent recruitment is making sure were prioritizing hiring at a diverse level and we have a great group of diverse suppliers, as well so i think for us, diversity is something that has to touch every single aspect of the business weve had a lot of conversations about that in the last couple months with the entire mcdonalds system and it was i think really powerful to just hear how committed everybody is to making sure that we stand out in that and certainly, that starts with me. All right that is more millionaires, more my narcot minority millionaires. When will i get my beyond meter . Were still testing. Remember, i said, jim, when, not if it will come but you would help me if you encourage your friends to go and buy it one thing you know about mcdonalds, if it sells well put it on the menu. I never hidden from you how much i love going to mcdonalds. No, you dont and i appreciate the support and i know you are passionate. Weve been back and forth on plantbased. I look forward to the day i can announce it and well go to a mcdonalds together and enjoy one. You bet we will so glad to see you so glad you came on mad money , chris, thank you so much. Thanks, jim. Ill tell you, chris is doing a great job. Hes president and ceo of mcdonalds this is an inexpensive stock. They will believe the winner mad money is back after the break. Okay, give it a try. Between wisdom and curiosity, theres a bridge. Between ideas and inspiration, trauma and treatment. Gained a couple of more pounds. Thats good for the babies. Between the moments that make us who we are, and keeping them safe, private and secure, theres webex. Beautiful. Last night i told you its a mistake to get too negative. Today shows you why. Do we need a more aggressive approach after the hat trick of good news, a steroid that makes covid less lethal and the white house floating a trillion dollar infrastructure package you have a bunch of covid winners and recovery plays that way you got something that works if the pandemic keeps rolling and something that works if we beat this virus and the economy takes off. The future is uncertain. The entire industry cant recover until we get a vaccine and the best case scenario, that the months awayme on the other hand the cow moon economy is rebounding. I have faith that well keep getting more positive headlines from the since front more news like that steroid that i took for awhile. Is it time to sell sleepy ones like costco. The cramer index thats a huge winner because the stores are the safest to shop in person its not the kind of thing wall street gets excited about during recovery because it steady eddie. Now, i love both the store and the stock. I am and have been a big believer in the storstore, visid them earlier this year, cant believe its this year it been so long. We own it for the travel trust but something you want to own right now or does it make sense to swap out here and swap back in at a later date if youre trade oriented to answer that question its important to take our emotions out. Were with tim collins and get a better read on costco stock and when it comes to costco, collins finds himself worrying about the opportunity cost opportunity cost measure those words. He thinks the stock hasnt been doing very much if he keeps flat lining, he might swap to something more aggressive and lively not a sell off, not a melt down, a long boring summer if youre actively managing money, you dont want to keep it parked in stocks that go nowhere if thats not your style, maybe youre like i have, dont worry about it for those of you that are nimble, this segment is for you. This is with a robin hood segment. Im a man in tights. Here is the deal collins is so confident that costco is in for a period of relative under performance because of this. He has to deceptively simple method here that relies on three moving averages. Hes got the tenday that is the green. 20day is the red. The 50day, thats the blue. The tenday shows you the short term trend the 20 shows you the medium term trend and 50 is long term. Bear with me take a look threat moving averages that the a straightforward chart. No bars, no dots, no resistance lines, simple moving ten, 20, 30, 50 what can this picture tell snus see how the moving averages converged . That would be fine what matters to collins is how these three lines come together. Generally speaking when a short term moving average goes above a longterm moving average that is bullish because the trend is improving but if the short term ones as exhibited by the tenday, okay, go below, the longterm ones as represented by the blue and red, thats bearish for the same reason. It means the action is getting worse. Unfortunately, costco finds itself in the second scenario. The ten and 20day moving average is a crossover why does it matter over the past eight months we seen this crossover twice going through december and then again going into march both times costco stock experienced weeks of lackluster for form ma performance. Wasnt terrible. He think there is are better places to go and hes picking up something similar from costcos weekly chart remember, this is weekly the dotted line represents the 20day, okay, this is the 20day simple moving average along with an envelope. The solid line shows you moving average plus or minus 2. 5 in 2019 costco roared ahead. It a contrary stock but that rally petered out late last year when that happened, the stock fell below the 20week moving average and spent the next month in purge tory. Last month it fell through the 20week moving average okay its currently around 302 above where the stock is trading collins is not necessarily resell but reason to be precourpr precautious. If the stock keeps falling down 2. 5 , way too close for me that is a red flag. Why . Again, its all about the history. In the past when costco sinks below the lower bound, the stocks continue to perform poorly for weeks, even months. Right now costco is teetering on the brink of the level takes that out and then you have serious under performance and that is very worrisome but all together and this is a very big week for costcos chart. If they can finish the week in the black, collins thinks the bulls just bought some time but if it closes lower for the week on friday, bad sign. Let me give you my view. Like i said, i love costco stock. Love costco shopping i think theyre poised to take a ton of market share where we reopened but socially distant economy and people feel safer shopping because we have to wear a mask and aisles are 16 feet. Costco isnt the stock people buy when they want america reopen for business. They would rather by the stocks of lesser retails. Thats historical and true all that said, costco has great management, great fund mentals, great prices, they reported a Strong Quarter at the end of may and an excellent longterm investment and people want to feel safe shopping and you can do that. Floating in and out is ridiculous you have no obligation to trade this the bottom line, the charts are interpreted by tim collins to suggestion the sleepy stock might be headed for a period of real under performance he recommends looking for better opportunities elsewhere this summer and would be justified for certain. If youre nuimble and think you can get in and out in august, i think he has a point long term, im not playing that game im a fan. Ron in ohio, ron caller hey, jim. Great show. Thank you, ron. Caller i bought a target on thursday afternoon after everything went down thinking hey, this is a great buy because its covid19 winner and its going down and went down on friday everything went up the airlines went up the cruise ships went up this thing kept going down wonder why well, target came out with a good number, wasnt perfect but target has a 2 yield. Brian cornell is doing a good job. I think the stock is fine. Its a 21 times earnings i think you can do well in target its one of the survivors but right now, other stores that have been closed of competition are open so people have to go sample those stores, they remember them there are new target fans and now they are going back to target dont worry, i think youre in good shape jeff in indiana, jeff . Caller hey, jim, i hold stock in spirit aero systems a supplier for boeing and boeing told them to slow down production they have also dropped about 65 since the sell off in march. Should i hold them hold or buy i think you should actually buy. That was a false tell. I know everybody freaked out when they did that i actually believe in the company. I think spirit is a well run company and im bullish on spirit okay i think youll pull through this thing without a problem. They are totally borrowing which kansas is a spin off at one point. Costco is a sleepy pandemic play its too simple. It too boring. I like boring. There are better short term opportunities, amen. You go buy kohls but for the long term, call me a fan much more mad money. When will it be safe to revisit the pod stocks he sees. With rumors infrastructure is rising, which stocks can benefit the most after our show there is a special about market i want you to see that and rapid fire and the lightening round. Stay with cramer can i find an Investment Firm with a truly longterm view thats been through multiple market cycles for over 85 years . With capital group, i can. Talk to your financial professional or consultant for investment risks and information. Talk to your financial professional or consultant this virus is testing all of us. Will. Never. Quit. Because they never quit. At what point do we revisit the pod stock . Not enough demand. Too much supply. If you stuck with the group, you got smoked then covid19 hit and they got hammered again but a funny thing happened the lockdown was great for pod sells. People had time to kill. Marijuana made a comeback which brings us to canape growth that stumbled badly after bottoming at 9 in march, this surged higher to 22 and change by late may by canaopy reported pairing back ambitions and worse, magic described 2020 as investment year, code for something that wall street hates to hear. Spend and not a lot of sales when there was such a snap back in sales for the rest of the industry in response, the stock fell 20 in a session and stuck in the mid high 20s ever since. Can it turn itself around . Lets check in with david kline, the relatively now ceo of Canopy Growth which is the largest shareholder, welcome to mad mon money. Great to be here, jim. I know you as a person about the numbers, about winning and taking share and taking names. Your predecessor burning through about 3 billion. What is it like to come in and can you save this . Yeah, i dont think its about sigaving, jim i was tacked to ensure canopy would be a multi year high growth story with a clear path to profitability we have the pieces in place to make that happen in reasonably short order. I know you pulled back from a lot of things. Looks like medicine is out, growing is out new york is growing out. You closed greenhouses you have new product you have a breath of product you have edibles and you have drinks which are going to be the stars . Well, look, i think the drinks will be special and the reason i would pick on drinks is that there are theres a large number of people that havent tried cannabis but intend to. In fact, in canada, 17 of the Adult Population claims that they intend to try cannabis but havent in the last 12 months. Those people are not going to enter the category by smoking. So we need to give them another reason to enter the category and then when you look at our drinks, we can make our drinks taste like literally anything that we want so we can meet the consumer need there. We get an onset time of ten minutes, equivalent to a drink of alcohol we can have an effect that kind of equates to about a glass of wine or a beer and we can do that, jim, in a way that has zero calories and zero carbs these are outstanding in terms of the experience they give. I think they are better than sell ze selzers. What this sounds like is this was the beauty of what i always loved about the deal i always thought we combine your sense about money and your ability to create taste with a product that is better than the old miller light less filling, no filling great taste. So youre telling me this is happening and, you know, im going to use a term if we were at home, youre telling me you can get me a good buzz where ill be fine not to drive, i know that, but a good buzz without calories im telling you that and saying unlike alcohol where the effect of the buzz, if you will, is based upon maybe the mood youre in or what youve eaten that day we can dial in the buzz when you talk about cannabis because we can give you a relaxing experience we can give you an invigorating experience there is a lot we can do with this next generation set of cannabis products and thats why early on, im spending money to get more and more Consumer Insight so that we know whats going to be necessary to bring consumers into the category. We already have what i believe is best in close science from the perspective of plant science, formulation and most importantly, human affects and i think were going to be able to put these together and create quite an amazing experience for our consumer set. Okay. So do you know how to calculate the thc into what would be the proof so i would be knowing what id be drinking . Yeah, so we need to do a lot of Consumer Education in that regard in our drinks, the drinks we say equate to a glass of beer are about two to two and a half milligrams of thc. We need to educate consumers so they understand almost the equivalent of consumers understand so they know the amount of alcohol in a drink and can take a guess to thefect ef it has on them. Dave, our country is strapped there are cities and statements that are bankrupt. Will they not look to Canopy Growth next selection or wherever to be able to make up some of the budget deficit because i cant believe i can have something that tastes better than beer with no calories and, you know what i want to do i want to set up a bar, accesepe from my bar i can sell your product. Can both those things happen within the next couple years i think so. My assumption is that 2022 for me is the magic number as you watch, more and more states move to legalization for medical or rec you bring in almost two more senators each time who are going to feel compelled not to make criminals out of those people. The revenue opportunity is huge. Ive seen really large numbers in terms of the ability or the amount of cash flow that could come into the government as a result of a normal excise tax regime not to mention it doesnt make sense cannabis isnt legal already. Alcohol prohibition hit 87 years ago and not really sure why cannabis was left off the list. Im so glad youre there. As much as i enjoyed your predecessor bruce linton, he was fun but youre a business person i like Business People because i care about stocks. 2022 is the magic year stay with cramer can i find an Investment Firm with a truly longterm view thats been through multiple market cycles for over 85 years . All day we heard the noises about the president and infrastructure bill considering a trillion dollar one, what does that do for the market do what does it mean . We dont know if the president will roll it out and if it does, congress will do it. They dont want to hand trump a victory a few months before the election lets fanaticize and consider what a trillion dollars of Infrastructure Spending would mean for the stock market and try to make money off of it. Immediately we see a surge for materials and Martin Marietta materials. Take us concrete, things to bud roads. They do well i cannot imagine how profitable they would be with a package from the federal government. If you want to own one, i prefer marietta they have the ability to go north and east and far west.
