View Comments Former New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman, one of the Republican Party's most vocal critics of Donald Trump, is among 100 officials who have signed a letter vowing to create a new national party if the GOP doesn't repudiate Trump and his "Big Lie" about last year's election. Headlined "A Call for American Renewal," the letter is viewed as an exploratory move toward forming a new party by veteran Republicans, like Whitman, who are horrified by the current GOP's lockstep loyalty to Trump and his false claim that the election was stolen from him. "We are going to support Republican candidates ... who refuse to continue to with the Big Lie,'' Whitman said in an interview with the USA TODAY Network on Wednesday. "And we're going to get together and have an open public meeting or a town hall, because there's so many others who feel disenfranchised."
