share-square-1266615 Shortly after shedding one of their catching depth options, the Pirates added another backstop on a Minor League deal. Free agent Christian Bethancourt was signed to a Minor League contract by the Pirates on Saturday. Bethancourt last played in the Major Leagues in 2017, when he played eight games for the Padres. Overall, he’s hit .222/.252/.316 with 20 doubles and eight homers in 161 games. Bethancourt was a Top 100 prospect in the Braves organization, as he was last ranked No. 82 in 2014. His 6-foot-3, 205-pound frame gives him some power potential, which he flashed in 2018 with 20 homers at Triple-A Colorado Springs, but the 29-year-old’s high evaluations as a prospect were largely centered on his excellent defensive games.
