CAMPAIGNERS are pressing for a historic gateway to be given a new lease of life. Hyde Gate is one of only two remaining structures of Hyde Abbey, the medieval monastery where King Alfred the Great was reburied. It is now best-noted as a pigeon roost, place for drug dealing and public urinal. But members of Hyde 900 want to revamp the grade one listed building and scheduled ancient monument and turn it into a cultural centre. Hyde 900 founder Edward Fennell lobbied the town forum, which had heard that action is to be taken to deter pigeons. He said: "The poor state of the gateway sent a message that no-one cared. For example, the floor-surface is badly broken and dangerous so why not dump refuse on it - and then chalk up your drug deals on the walls?
