WHEN 17-year-old Brad Hickman’s mother was diagnosed with a brain tumour at the age of 43 it was devastating news for the family. There had been no warning. The receptionist at Windsor High School, Halesowen, suffered three seizures one day in December 2010. She got her diagnosis in January and was dead within a few months – on May 11, 2011. Ten years on and Brad still remembers the pain, but also the fantastic support that he, and especially his ten-year-old little sister Rebecca, received from Mary Stevens Hospice in her last few weeks. It was the day after the ninth anniversary of her death, on May 12 last year, that Brad set out on an epic journey to mark her death with a special gift for the Stourbridge-based hospice.
