And coming up on Bbc News, linejudges at wimbledon will be a thing of the past as the all England Club controversially update to electronic Line Calling for next year. Good Evening And Welcome to the Bbc News at six. This is the West Coast of Florida Tonight as millions of people brace themselves for the lethal Hurricane Bearing down on them. The category 4 storm with sustained winds of 155 miles an hour is still about 12 hours away. Its expected to be the most powerful storm to hit florida in more than a century. This is where the hurricane is expected to hit before it passes right over the state of florida. Forecasters are warning of torrential rain, flash flooding, High Winds and possible Storm Surges of 10 15 feet. Surges happen when water moves inland from the coast. This is what it looks like from space, this was filmed from the international Space Station earlier today. It shows just how vast the hurricane is. Our correspondent Gordon Corera is in tampa. And conditions are already starting to get worse and it is still hours away . That is right, we are around 12 hours away from milton making landfall on the Florida Coast but the Wind And Rain has been getting noticeably more intense. And everyone who is still here In The City knows that there is more to come overnight when milton finally hits. President biden has described it as possibly the Storm Of The Century and here in tampa this has been a city which has been preparing for the worst. Tampa today has the feel of a ghost town. A city thats been left to the wildlife. The few people who are still out are mainly here because theyre taking desperate steps to protect what they can. Like fatim, who kept her shop open so people could get last minute supplies, but is now boarding it up. Shes written her name on her arm in Case Something happens to her. Fatim. I write my name here, just in case i got flooded, nobody knows where i am. So youre that worried, youve written your name on your arm . Its better for people to know my identity, you know, just in case. You dont know. Yeah. This is, this is the worst one thats going to come. So hopefully, hopefully everybody is safe. Yeah, hopefully its not bad, just electric and thats it. Okay. Yeah. Losing power is no big deal. Oh, yeah. Losing lives is. Thats what matters. Yeah. Thank you. This is tampas entertainment district. Normally, its bustling, but today its boarded up. It lies just outside the mandatory evacuation zone. But everyone here seems to have taken the advice and either got out, or hunkered down. At least half the city has left, and police are focusing on those whove remained in the high risk areas. So weve evacuated nearly 200,000 people. But the challenge is, its just a few that are still out there, and our officers are going door to door to try to convince those people to actually evacuate. Some are reluctant, but our goal is to save lives here. And the more people we can get evacuated, the more lives we can save. The Tampa Region has around 3 Million people living in it, and many did make their way out in the last few days, heeding the stark warnings. Petrol stations have been running out as people fill up. No one is quite sure when they will come back. And to what . Weve never had one like this. Ive been here for 38 years and never had one that forced us to do this. Never being able to find fuel. This is the only place that has fuel. Diggers have also been trying to clean up the debris from Hurricane Helene, which hit two weeks ago, to try and reduce the risk of milton throwing all of this around and causing more damage. But time has now run out. You need to prepare for catastrophic impacts. This is going to be a serious storm, one that could forever change communities that are still recovering from helene. I know it is tough to leave behind everything i know it is tough to leave behind everything you own but i urge Everyone Everything you own but i urge everyone in the path of the Hurricane Everyone in the path of the hurricane to follow all Safety Instructions in the next 24 hours. It is literally instructions in the next 24 hours. It is literally a matter of Life And Death but now, with the storm just hours away from landfall, its a question of waiting and bracing for impact. Gordon corera, Bbc News, tampa. Why is this hurricane so powerful and why is florida being hit by the second hurricane in just two weeks . 0ur climate editor, justin rowlatt, is here to explain. Hurricanes are tropical cyclones that form around the coasts of north america. Just look at the scale of Hurricane Milton. Now, the exact causes of individual storms are complex but hurricanes only form above warm water 7 generally at least 27 degrees celsius. The Heat And Moisture from the sea is the fuel that allows them develop and gives them the energy to keep spinning. The number of hurricanes has not increased over the past century and scientists Don T expect it to do so as our climate warms. However, they say it is likely tropical cyclones are getting more intense, with more of them reaching category 3 or above. We are also seeing a likely increase in how quickly some cyclones intensify 7 both Hurricane Helene two weeks ago and Hurricane Milton grew stronger very quickly. Scientists say that is because Climate Change is warming the world s oceans meaning storms can pick up more energy and therefore have higher wind speeds. Warmer air also holds more moisture, leading to more intense rainfall. Sea temperatures in the Gulf Of Mexico have been significantly higher than normal this summer 7 around 2c above average. A report published today found these unusually high Sea Temperatures were made between 200 and 500 times more likely by Climate Change. Look at this the predicted Storm Surge that rush of Sea Water associated with low pressure storms 7 happen on top of already higher sea levels. It could be as high as 15 feet 4. 5 metres but while thousands flee the hurricane these guys are flying into the storm literally. Staff from the national oceanic and atmospheric Administration Yesterday collecting vital data from milton to help keep millions safe. I dont envy them sophie. Justin, thank you. These are live pictures from the West Coast of florida well have all the latest on Hurricane Milton as it barrels across the Gulf Of Mexico getting closer to making landfall in the news at ten. The next leader of the Conservative Party will be either kemi Badenoch Or Robertjenrick after the front runner James Cleverly was dramatically eliminated from the race this afternoon. This is how the mps votes were cast 42 for Kemi Badenoch who came bottom in yesterdays vote, 41 for robertjenrick, and 37 forJames Cleverly. Now its up to tory party members to choose who their next leader will be. 0ur Political EditorChris Mason sent this report from 0xfordshire. For the first time since 1777, 0xfordshire has no conservative mps. People here in banbury have sent conservatives to westminster for over a century, but they didnt injuly. So what do the tory party members in this County Make of the contest to replace Rishi Sunak7 nervous7 table, chairs, pumpkins and a laptop. Time to watch the result at a farm shop. Kemi badenoch, 42 votes. James cleverly, 37 votes. And robertjenrick, 41 votes. Wow. Kemi Badenoch And Robertjenrick through, James Cleverly out. What do you think of that . I mean, that is quite something, isnt it . Thats a shock. That is. Given yesterdays results and how he was at conference, i thought he would walk it at this stage. Turning to you, you have your generic badge proudly, proudly there. And your man has made it to the last two. The exact reverse of what i was expecting. As it stands right now, jenricks got steadier hands to to steer the unstable ship. What is it about Kemi Badenoch that you like . Many moderate minded conservatives like myself itself. Faced with the choice of robertjenrick, who i think is a steady candidate, and Kemi Badenoch, who has quite a lot of potential, whether upwards or downwards, we know not at this time, would prefer to go for the latter. Well, im really pleased because i was im just disappointed im not wearing my kemi badge. And james wanted James Cleverly to make the last two. Im very disappointed to see that he didnt get through. I think he would have been the Unity Candidate that could have really brought the party together, but also, you know, delivered for people across the uk. Back in westminster todays victors offer their reaction. My message is one of change, to change our party not with platitudes, but with policies that will address the big challenges facing our country, on the nhs, on the economy and immigration. We need to unite behind a real conservatism that means something to the country. Throwing out policy without rooting it in values doesnt work. And thats what we saw at the last election. We cannot make the same mistake again. Hands up for Kemi Badenoch7 and hands up for robertjenrick. The jeopardy of election and now the next one begins. Rishi sunak S Successor will be announced three weeks on saturday. So who are robertjenrick and Kimi Padlock7 political labels are not much use but if you are a conservative who sees yourself a centrist or on the left of the party you do not have a Flag Bearer in the final two. You do not have a Flag Bearer in the finaltwo. Robertjenrick you do not have a Flag Bearer in the final two. Robertjenrick is moved to the right since becoming an mp, his experience in government shifting his instincts on things like immigration Kemi Badenoch seen as a potential star by her supporters but they do acknowledge that she can put a foot in your mouth as well. Tonight i would say that she is probably the favourite to win but then after the last 24 hours or so, who would make predictions . Chris mason, thank you. Two years ago, an investigation was launched at the world famous great 0rmond Street Hospital into a Bone Surgeon Whod been carrying out Leg Lengthening and straightening surgery on children. The review has already found that some surgery resulted in long term pain, injury even amputation. Now the bbc has learnt that the investigation into yaserjabbar is being extended to 4 other hospitals in london. 0ur health editor, hugh pym, is here. Which hospitals are involved . Three are private hospitals, Saintjohn And Saint elizabeth, the Portland Hospital and crimeware hospital. And one Nhs Trust the chelsea and westminster. Stjohn and Saint Elizabeth made clear only adult surgery was carried out by Yaser Jabbar there. Surgery was carried out by Yaser Jabbarthere. But surgery was carried out by Yaser Jabbar there. But the bbc has also seen a report from the Royal College Of Surgeons for great 0rmond Street which was handed in a year ago but has only come out this week. It has been sent to some of the families and weve seen the report and some conclusions are very damning. Saying that there were significant issues in relation to Patient Consent and that staff were upset about the standard of care and sometimes staff did not tell families that the operation had been carried out in a different way from that that was planned for the great 0rmond Street say they are deeply sorry i have expressed that to the families. The review is ongoing rose and will be committed to looking at all the 700 cases and they say they will report back to the royal college. In yet another twist in the Wagatha Christie case, Rebekah Vardy has been ordered to pay Coleen Rooney a further £100,000 as part of the money she owes following the high profile legal case two years ago. Barristers for the pair were back in Court Today in a dispute over legal fees. Mrs vardy had sued Mrs Rooney for libel but lost the High Court legal action and was ordered to pay 90 of her fees. Our culture reporter, noor nanji, reports. Its exactly five years to the day since this viral social Media Post sparked a high profile libel battle, dubbed Wagatha Christie. Coleen rooney accusing Rebekah Vardy of leaking private information about her to the press. People going behind your back and, you know, giving, delivering information, which is my information to deliver. If i wanted to do it, then its down to me, but not for anyone else. The trial attracted huge attention when it reached court two years ago. Vardy lost and was ordered to pay 90 of rooneys legal costs, which now stand at £1. 8 million. This week, the dispute came back to the High Court. Although neither woman attended, this time. With vardy s lawyers seeking to reduce that bill. There were some headline grabbing claims, including when Rebekah Vardy s team claimed that Coleen Rooneys costs included a lawyer staying at the Luxury Nobu Hotel and running up substantial drinks, Dinnerand Minibar charges. Coleen rooneys lawyer argued that those claims were factually inaccurate. In The End, thejudge dismissed a number of mrs vardy S Claims and ordered her to pay a further £100,000 to Mrs Rooney. This isnt The End of the battle. The final amount that vardy needs to pay will be determined when the case returns, likely next year. Noor nanji, Bbc News. Our top story this evening. Benjamin netanyahu have spoken on the phone, as the Middle East is braced for an israeli response to last weeks iranian Missile Attack. Clive myrie is injerusalem. Yes, sophie, that call between the two leaders also included Vice PresidentKamala Harris joining the conversation. This is a photograph of prime Minister Netanyahu taking that call. The White House is anxious that, while israel has a right to defend itself, the Israeli Military must be held back from precipitating a dramatic escalation in current tensions. 0n the agenda of talks clearly would have been israels invasion of lebanon and the expansion of Military Operations in recent days. And of course iran, and the nature of any possible israeli response, following tehrans multiple Missile Attack over a week ago. But, while america might be calling for restraint, influential voices here within israel want a powerful message sent to iran. Indeed, a former israeli Prime Minister, Naftali Bennett, has urged Mr Netanyahu to go after irans nuclear facilities, a suggestion that makes washington very nervous. Hes been speaking toJeremy Bowen. Israels onslaught against its enemies, this was an attack in beirut last saturday on a senior hezbollah leader, wouldnt have been possible without american weapons and diplomatic support. Even though israels Military Hardware Depends on us resupply, washington has been reluctant to pressure israel when, Asjoe Biden put it, they go over the top. Since april, when iran attacked israel with an assault after an israeli Air Strike on their embassy in damascus, the us has been telling israelis not to escalate by hitting iranian nuclear sites, even 0scar the latest attack last week for the now influential voice in israel want to ignore us wishes. Israels Defence Minister has just said that Israels Response to iran will be deadly, precise and in his words surprising. What do you read into that . Well, i think the one question on thatis well, i think the one question on that is whether it is going to surprise The Americans. There are reports in the israeli media, which i cant personally confirm, but there are a lot, suggesting that one thing set on that call was that, if israel went ahead with a strike on the nuclear facilities without coordinating with The Americans, getting their permission, then The Americans would not use their defensive powers to protect israel from any retaliation. I dont know if thats true, if thats what they said, but if there is that kind of threat flying around, perhaps, with the israelis call the bluff of The Americans with that, the only circumstances in which america would never defend Israel7 Ispoke circumstances in which america would never defend israel7 i spoke to one former Mossad Expert on iran a couple of days ago and she said to me that she thinks they will do what The Americans want for now, because this isnt going to be The End of it, whatever happens, and after this there will be other rounds of escalation and, as she said, israel will need The Americans, so they need to try and keep The Americans on site, but there is a lot of pressure in this country for netanyahu to say, no, we are going to go after those iranian sites. Indeed. Thank you, Jeremy Bowen in tel aviv. More from us here at tempe. But thats it for now. The trial of a 14 year old girl, accused of trying to murder two teachers and a pupil in a stabbing at a school in south wales, has collapsed, due to whats been described as a great irregularity the girl, who Cannot Be named due to her age, pleaded guilty to three counts of wounding with intent, but denied three counts of Attempted Murder at the school in ammanford. A retrial is due to start injanuary. Certificates which recognise the loss of a baby during pregnancy are now available to most bereaved parents in england from today. The government has removed a previous limitation which meant only those whod experienced a miscarriage since 2018 could apply. It has been revealed that a 15 year old girl who was stabbed to death in northumberland last year was killed by her Ex Boyfriend who was 16 at the time. Ajudge has now allowed holly newtons killer to be named as Logan Macphail saying the nature of the relationship was a key factor in the case. He was found guilty of murdering her last summer. Alison freeman reports. Logan macphail had been holly Newtons Boyfriend for around 18 months but, when the 15 year old ended their Relationship Injanuary last year, he stalked her, then stabbed her to death in a frenzied attack in an alleyway in hexham in northumberland. Macphail, who was 16 at the time, admitted manslaughter but denied murder, saying hed intended to hurt himself and that he had no memory of the attack. But the jury didnt believe him and he was found guilty at Newcastle Crown Court at The End of august. We havent been able to name Logan Macphail or say that he was hollys Ex Boyfriend until now. Thats because there was an order in place protecting his identity because hes under 18. But, after we made an application to the judge, hes lifted that order because of what he calls the public concern about murders by young people carrying knives and violence against women and girls. The relationship had been toxic. Macphail had been obsessed with holly, and herfamily says hed been coercive. Hed kept saying to her that, if you leave me, ill kill myself, several times. He didnt like her having otherfriends. Going out without him. He needed to know where she was all the time. It was all just control. Hollys murder has been recorded in official police statistics as Knife Crime because, in the eyes of the law, she was a child and therefore cant be the victim of domestic abuse, something Hollys Family thinks should be changed. I just dont think it should be classed as Knife Crime because it was so much more than that. I feel like, for me, Knife Crime is related to gangs carrying knives. That was never holly. She had nothing to fight back with. We need to realise now that young people are having relationships a lot younger. So i do think that they need to lower the age of when you can be in an abusive relationship, because thats exactly what it was. Logan macphail will be sentenced for Hollys Murder at The End of the month. Alison freeman, Bbc News, newcastle.
