Fields, a short drive from where we are, the first area to come in the hamas assault, where thousands of israelis and people from Around The World had gathered for the Nova Music Festival. They dance the night away but thenit they dance the night away but then it turned into a slaughter. 350 were murdered and 44 were taken hostage. This morning, at the vigil, they played the last track of music at 6. 29 because that is when the music stopped and the slaughter started. This morning, again, they played the music again to honour the dead and the missing. Music. Meanwhile injerusalem, crowds gathered before dawn, many holding aloft pictures of the hostages seized by hamas. They demanded that the prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, ensure the return of those still being held. Across the region, the war intensifies. There were powerful explosions in Southern Beirut as israel carried out fresh strikes overnight with increasing fears of a wider regional conflict in the middle east. This is the scene live in beirut as lebanon now reckons with the aftermath of those strikes. Israel says it is targeting the installations, the Control Areas of hamas, but they are targeting densely populated neighbourhoods of beirut. Our middle East Correspondent Yolande Knell looks back now at a year of conflict and diplomatic failures. This was israels deadliest ever day. Exactly one year ago, waves of hamas fighters from gaza led a bloody attack on Israeli Army bases, villages, a music festival. Snatching hostages. And it triggered the deadliest ever war against palestinians. With relentless israeli bombardment, most of Gazas Population forced from their homes. A humanitarian catastrophe. Theres still no end in sight. They destroyed our house and our life. Hadas calderon from Nir Oz going back to the home where her Mother And Niece were killed. Her Son And Daughter were kidnapped by hamas and held for 52 days before they were released in a truce deal. But hadas says theyre still living the nightmare of the 7th of october. Her ex husband, ofer, is one of dozens of hostages stuck In Gaza, last seen alive in a tunnel by his daughter. We know that every moment his life is. Can be gone. My daughter, she said, because she met him and he told her, please fight for me, i dont want to be dead, to die here in the caves. Whole life is on hold, hold. We cant think about future, we cant think about nothing else. Repeated attempts by us, egyptian and qatari diplomats to negotiate a Gaza Ceasefire and Hostage Deal have failed. And every day In Gaza brings new casualties. Family home in nusseirat, killing hassan, aged six, and his grandmother. Translation i want to know why. We are civilians, we pose no threat. Now in hospital, Ahmed Younis tries to cheer his surviving children with memories of happier days. Theyve lost all they owned and are in constant pain. Translation i want my children and my wife to be treated. If i could, i would take them abroad. There is no safety. I hope from god that the war stops today before tomorrow. But instead, the fighting is now spreading in the middle east. And that leaves many palestinians and israelis desperately worried that World Attention is shifting away from their suffering. The people of gaza desperate for a ceasefire, and then to the wall that was triggered by the wall that was triggered by the horrific events of october the horrific events of October The 7th. As we have been hearing, of the hostages take to the streets at night after night to protest, call for an end to the war to allow their Loved Ones to come home. Until all of the hostages are accounted for, israeli say that October The 7th is like an open wound. Lets get a reflection on these events and what lies ahead. Joining me now is udi goren. His Cousin Tal haimi was taken hostage by hamas on October 7th and later killed. Thank you forjoining me on this day. Thank you for oining me on this day. Thank you for oining me on this da. ~ i.. What goes through your Mind Today as you reflect back on today as you reflect back on the horrific events of october the horrific events of October The 7th . ts the horrific events of October The 7th . m the horrific events of October The 7th . ~ , , a, the horrific events of October The 7th . A , a, the 7th . As you have said, i think back the 7th . As you have said, i think back on the 7th . As you have said, i think back on this the 7th . As you have said, i think back on this year the 7th . As you have said, i think back on this year as i the 7th . As you have said, i. Think back on this year as the entire year, we are still stuck in October The 7th 2023. A lot of people have been impacted and then were able in sun wei another to move on. But we are still undergoing that same trauma and we are still in this struggle, as you just heard, our lives have stopped and that is true, there is no way we can do anything aside from take on this campaign to bring them back as soon as possible. The fact we are a year into the war at the hostages are not back, most of all we feel it is not even a concern. We feel that. Everybody hasnt done everything they should have been doing. Of course, i speak of my own government which, the hostages are not here, so clearly they havent done everything they could have done. But the war and the fighting still goes on and the World Hasnt done enough, the World Hasnt done enough, the World Hasnt done enough, the world has a lot of influence, the us, qatar, egypt and the uk and europe and of course, they are not the key players at The End of the day, the deal has to be signed by israel and hamas. But there is a lot of Love Ridge that can be used and hasnt.. ,. hasnt. You dont believe your prime minister, hasnt. You dont believe your prime minister, benjamin prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, when he says repeatedly he is doing all he can. That, as i speak to you, we can hear the sounds of artillery going across the border to gaza. He says he is doing all he can and he will not stop this wall until his aim of Destroying Hamas is achieved and he blames hamas for the deadlock . For the deadlock . First of all i will say for the deadlock . First of all i will say the for the deadlock . First of all i will say the most for the deadlock . First of all i will say the most obvious l i will say the most obvious thing. The hostages are not here, so therefore he has not done everything he could have. Had he, they would be here and thatis had he, they would be here and that is simple reasoning. Aside from that, i am sure that the war will not stop until the goals of the war they have sets, he and the government have set are achieved. However, they havent, as far as we believe, they havent been prioritising that. There are two goals of this war. One is making sure israel is safe and the other one is bringing back the other one is bringing back the hostages. At this point, the hostages. At this point, the war, the years fighting with hamas has weakened it enough that israel is safe enough that israel is safe enough at this point to make sure October The 7th doesnt happen again Tomorrow Morning and therefore we can reach a deal that will bring the hostages back. We will then have to continue making sure that our border is safe, because hamas will not cease doing what it does, it openly says it. But at The End of the day, we have to prioritise. ts day, we have to prioritise. As ou day, we have to prioritise. As you know, many of the places that came under attack were home to left wing peace activist. They had close ties to some of the residents of gaza, they try to help them in hours of need. After all that happened, when it gets to the day after, do you think israelis and palestinians can find ways to live together insecurity . I find ways to live together insecurity . Find ways to live together insecuri .. insecurity . I think that when Theole Insecurity . I think that when Peeple Use Insecurity . I think that when people use October Insecurity . I think that when people use october the insecurity . I think that when people use October The 7th | insecurity . I think that when i people use October The 7th and hamas, the Hamas Terrace have done things on October The 7th that would put the nazis to shame. Terrorists. They have executed the most barbaric, heinous crimes people have ever thought about doing against other people. And yet, to say that because of that we dont think they would ever be a peaceful resolution, it doesnt have to be peace, you can do a lot of different things, but with the violence between israelis and palestinians never cease . To say that, i think is actually ignorant in looking at past, long standing ethnic conflicts. History shows that at The End of the day conflicts, when you speak to your own audience, you can stay very close to home in bringing examples, if you look at northern ireland. If you look at even much longer conflicts between england and france, 500 years, there was four and then it ended. At The End of the day it ended. At The End of the day it would end. We cant live through war for posterity. But we would need to make very definitive actions and have the vision and have the leaders to bring us there. At the very moment, we dont have these leaders and i will say more than that, i have said it in my prior response and i am very. Ifeel very strongly prior response and i am very. I feel very strongly about this, the world must stop paying Lip Service if it wants to see this conflict end. And the world has been paying Lip Service. And it has been fuelling this conflict for years and years by supporting the military efforts on both sides and by not putting a stop to it and not asking for accountability and vision. Thank you very much forjoining us on what must be very difficult day for you and everyone who lost Loved Ones in the horrific events of october the horrific events of October The 7th. I am very sorry you lost your dear cousin, thank you forjoining us. Joining me now is our middle East Correspondent Yolande Knell. We were just hearing there from udi with his call for the war to end and there to be a ceasefire In Gaza. What all the polls saying now . They began in the months after the war began by showing strong public backing for the Israeli Army actions In Gaza, but have they been shifting over the months . Certainly there has been broad public support for the war In Gaza for its aims of Dismantling Hamas military capabilities are bringing the Hostages Home and removing the threat from gaza. There was another War Goal that was recently added, to return people to their homes in the north of the country. They have been displaced by the fighting that has gone on in parallel to the war In Gaza between israel and hezbollah. There is a drop in support for the war In Gaza, that many people really want the war to end, close to half in one of the recent polls of Jewish Israelis that responded and many more of the arab israelis, who make up 20 of israels population. There is, by comparison, a lot more support for what is happening in the north of the country, the action taking place against hezbollah. If you look at the support for gaza dropping off, Thatis Support for gaza dropping off, that is this failure to bring the Hostages Home. If you look at events taking place across israel today, yes, you have these very moving commemorations but you also have protests against the government, as we do on a weekly basis. Particularly with the hostage families, many secular israelis who have been taking part in those and they want more to be done to bring about a Ceasefire And Hostage release deal. Release deal. Give us a bit more detail release deal. Give us a bit more detail about release deal. Give us a bit more detail about today, | release deal. Israel said it was a limited incursion into lebanese territory to attack hezbollah strongholds, what it described as some of the Places Hezbollah is able to launch Missile Attacks across the border into Northern Israel. Israel finds itself fighting this war on a number of fronts with hezbollah in lebanon and with hamas In Gaza and with the houthis in yemen.
