Now looking like a ghost town. Thousands have left, many more are still trying to leave. Driving through dahieh this morning, we saw cars packed with mattresses and bags. Some people seemed to be leaving on foot. Israeli Air Strikes destroyed this building yesterday. The smell of the explosives was still hanging in the air and we could hear the sound of drones flying overhead. Israel says it will continue to target hezbollah, even after killing the groups leader, Hassan Nasrallah. Dahieh is no longer safe. There is a tense and anxious wait in lebanon following the killing of Hassan Nasrallah. The wait for a possible response from hezbollah. For 30 years, Hassan Nasrallah led A Group often described as a state within a state. Hezbollah has been weakened but it has not been defeated. There is a trail of destruction in dahieh and across the country. A Ground Invasion of Southern Lebanon feels more imminent. But here, the impact on those caught up by the violence. Lebanon saysi million people may have already been displaced by the conflict so far. Many are now here in beirut. Translation honestly, the situation here in lebanon is very chaotic and we are really in a crisis. We do not know what is going to happen. Lebanon is waiting, uncertain about the future, but fearful about what may come next. Hugo bachega, bbc news, beirut. The lebanese prime minister, najib mikati, has warned that A Million people have been displaced. One million lebanese people have moved from one place to another. It has never happened in history, that they have have moved in hours. We are dealing with all sides of this problem. Our middle East Correspondent Nafiseh kohnavard, has this update from beirut where shes been speaking to many displaced people whove spent the night sleeping in a park. These people behind me are families spending the second night in The Street with no help and no support. They have to stay in this small park, and we saw a lot of other families, they were just sleeping in The Street. There is no place for them to go back. Some of them decided to go to syria, to return to syria, and also some lebanese decided to go to syria because they think syria now, for example damascus, will be safer than beirut itself. So this is the situation. The whole night we had drones it is believed theyre israeli civilian drones. The buzzing was so strong. And still i am hearing them, like a big mosquito or a motorcycle in the sky. And this is the situation, that people think the attacks, the israeli attacks, they will continue. It is very hot now. It is very hot and these people are staying here, just using the small shadow that they can take from some trees in these parks. And many others, they cant even find a shadow and they cant find food and they cant find enough water. They left their houses with very short notice from the Israeli Army and many could not even grab anything for themselves. Since yesterday, they have not seen any Aid Group or even the government come and help provide them anything, just some groups, it is difficult to use the word of lucky, but they had a chance to find food from some organisations, but many of them are out of reach for this help. They dont have a car, they had to walk. You can imagine that if this situation continues, how angry these people will be. They are already exhausted and angry. Lets look at how the events of this weekend are being viewed in israel now. On saturday evening, israels prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the outcome of that airstrike was an historic turning point. But iran, a close supporter of hezbollah, said his death would be avenged. Israel has continued its attacks against senior figures in hezbollah. The countrys military posted on x that it has killed nabil anuk, who it says was a member of hezbollah s executive council. Our Correspondent Injerusalem Jon donnison has the latest. Israel has been carrying out fresh airstrikes this morning. They say theyve taken out another senior hezbollah commander. And if you listen to the words of prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last night, he clearly feels that he has the boot on the throat of hezbollah and is going to continue applying the pressure. So the ball is really in the court of both hezbollah and perhaps more importantly, iran. To see what their response will be now, in particular, iran so far during this escalation of violence has involved it avoided becoming directly involved in a confrontation with israel. But the assassination of Hassan Nasrallah is going to challenge that, and were going to have to wait and see whether it will continue. One key point, i think, is that all the efforts of the international community, including those being led by President Biden and the United States, have failed to stop israel carrying out its operations against hezbollah, as well as the ongoing war in gaza. And israel clearly feels that it will do whatever it takes to protect its citizens. And, as i say, no sign that theres an end to this escalation in violence. Lets speak to our correspondentjenny kumah, joining me live in washington dc. Whats the latest reaction from the biden administration to these latest strikes . Yesterday we heard President Biden say that the killing of the Hezbollah Leader was a Measure Ofjustice the Hezbollah Leader was a measure of justice for the Hezbollah Leader was a Measure Ofjustice for his many victims, and he said that many americans had died during what he described as a four Decade Reign of terror. This morning the White House national security adviser, John Kirby, has been speaking on cnn and he pretty much echoed that sentiment, saying that the death was good for the region and good for the world. When asked about civilian casualties, he said we have made no bones about the fact that we dont necessarily see the tactical execution the same way that israel does in terms of protections of civilians. We have heard from John Kirby is the same messages that we have heard since the beginning of the conflict. This ironclad support for israel, an appeal for israel to avoid civilian casualties, and an emphasis on the need for a diplomatic solution. And the main aim of the us has been to avoid regional escalation, to secure a Hostage And Ceasefire deal and so far that has failed. The us is now in crisis mode. Crisis management mode. How concerned is the us about its military forces and citizens in the region being targeted . Today we had a statement from the Defence Department from the secretary of defence, Lloyd Austin, and he has given a stark warning that the us will use every necessary measure to defend their people, american troops, american residents, and american interests in the region. The us already has a number of assets there in terms of warships, fighterjets, both in the region and in the eastern mediterranean. Today in his statement, Lloyd Austin said that they have troops on increased readiness to deploy. Jenny, thank you. Lets speak to randa slim, who is a senior Fellow And Director of Conflict Resolution at the Middle East insitute. Thank you very much forjoining us here on bbc news. How significant a retaliation do you think we are going to sea from Iran And Hezbollah . Good to be with from Iran And Hezbollah . Good to be with you. From Iran And Hezbollah . Good to be with you. There from Iran And Hezbollah . Good to be with you. There is to be with you. There is increasing pressure on iran to retaliate, whether we have heard from iranians officials until now that they are not going to fall into israel s trap, that what israel is trying to do with this assassination is to drag iran into a regionalfight, which means a fight between iran and the United States. The iranian regime knows well that they dont have the capacity to win. So there might be a response, but it might be from the proxies. That is going to be the default response. To have the default response. To have the coordinated response from houthis, and from the militia. Is that so tehran does not become caught up in what would become caught up in what would be a wider war . Be a wider war . Yes, exactly. That is their be a wider war . Yes, exactly. That is their basic be a wider war . Yes, exactly. That is their basic fear, be a wider war . Yes, exactly. That is their basic fear, from | that is their basic fear, from the beginning, since last october, iran has shared the same interest as the United States in wanting to avoid a regional war because they dont see that war will be to their benefit if they get dragged into it. There is increasing pressure now inside a run on the leadership, particularly on the leadership, particularly on the supreme leader, to react. There are also voices inside iran, especially within the iranians revolutionary guard, who are arguing that the fact that iran did not retaliate against the killing of the Hamas Leader by israel is partly one of the reasons why israel felt emboldened to go after Hassan Nasrallah. With this escalation, which is the targeted assassination of Hassan Nasrallah, i think israel has now embarked on a miscalculated trajectory, guided by this belief on the part of the Iranians Leadership that they are now facing a unique opportunity to decapitate, to at least eliminate hezbollah as being able in the near term or medium term to present any kind of serious threat to israel. By decapitating hezbollah, which is the anchor of iran s axis of resistance in the region, they are also dealing a heavy blow to the iran regional strategy and weakening, you know, its footprint and its ability to represent any kind of threat to israel. So i think they are going to continue with this trajectory, killing as many commanders of hezbollah as possible. They already announced they will go after the success of Hassan Nasrallah once a successor is appointed, and they will continue with these strikes against weapons depot, wherever they think they are. And again, for the objective of weakening hezbollah. Whether this is achievable in the long term, i dont know. I mean, it might be a tactical success in the short term, but long term strategically as an objective, i dont think it will be a success. The party will regroup, will reorganise, and iran will continue to supply them with weapons and ammunition. Them with weapons and ammunition. What sort of resnonse ammunition. What sort of response are ammunition. What sort of response are you ammunition. What sort of. Response are you expecting ammunition. What sort of response are you expecting from the United States, given that Joe Biden is not going to be in office for much longer . The united States Office for much longer . The United States is office for much longer . J United States is engaging office for much longer . Tie United States is engaging in two tracks. At some point i think contracting Each Other. On one track they are supporting israel. Eliminating, decapitating, weakening hezbollah as much as possible, and seeing it as a unique opportunity to lessen Hezbollah Stranglehold on lebanon, and to create a new political order in lebanon. Again, that is doubtful that it is achievable, but this is where the us and israel share a common interest. On the other track, they are very worried about a regional war, about an escalation that gets out of control, and they have had this concern since last october. They have not veered away from that. So they will work out a ceasefire, some kind of diplomatic process. They are willing, especially president , will want to give israel as much as possible to achieve, Orto Israel as much as possible to achieve, or to go after hezbollah and weakening it before he intervened personally and calls for a ceasefire. Thank you very much for your time. ~ , an eight year old boy has died after being shot at a farm in warcop, in North West england. The child suffered injuries to his head and face. Cumbria police say theyve arrested a man in his 60s. Our correspondent Fiona Trott gave us the latest from cumbria well, this is where the police were seen yesterday, just off this busy road here, the a66 in cumbria. And what Cumbria Police have told us is this, that both they and the paramedics were called to a farm just before 3 Oclock Yesterday because they had reports of a child having been seriously injured in a firearms incident. When they arrived at the farm, they found an eight year old boy with serious injuries to his face and head. Thats how its been described to us. They also found a gun. They arrested a man at the scene, a man in his 60s. He was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. The boy was airlifted to hospital. Now, tragically, that eight year old died in hospital overnight. And the police have now told us that the man in custody is being questioned on suspicion of Gross Negligence manslaughter. So that tells us the nature of the investigation so far as work continues to establish the exact circumstances of this. Were waiting for the police to confirm the boys identity. Were waiting to hear what his relationship is with the man who is in custody. And were also waiting to hear what type of gun was involved. But of course, what we have here in this area of cumbria this afternoon, while this investigation continues, is a family and a community here who are coming to terms with what has happened. Now its time for a look at todays sport. Hello from the bbc sport centre. Two matches in the Premier League on sunday, and Aston Villa missed the chance to go level on points with liverpool at the top of the standings. They drew 2 2 at newly promoted ipswich town. The hosts taking the lead at Portman Road through Liam Delap Afterjust 8 minutes. But villa turning the tie on its head in the first half as Morgan Rogers and then England StrikerOllie Watkins giving the visitors a 2 1 lead at the break. But it was delap again who Drew Ipswich Level with a fabulous finish and a share of the points for kieran mckennas side. Manchester united play tottenham in the Premier League at Old Trafford very shortly. Both sides have had mixed starts to the season, with spurs tenth and united eleventh. Rarely a week goes by without debate over the future of united manager erik ten hag. And that speculation has increased again, just the one win in their last four Premier League matches followed by a somewhat underwhelming 1 1 draw with dutch Side Fc Twente in the europa league. We will be judged and that is normal. For every game, everyone expects united to win. We know that. It is not a secret for anyone. When you are in this club, you have to deal with this factor, and we do. I think erics in a real toughjob. Hes done really well. You know, he keeps mentioning hes won two trophies and he has, you know. So i dont think thats insignificant. Everyone keeps telling me thats all i have to do. But obviously its not all you have to do, you know . Because when you do that, then theres more. Theres always more. So i think hes done a greatjob. Like i said, a difficultjob.
