What is the white House View of potential escalation in the West Bank . Potential escalation in the West Bank . ,. West bank . Weve been concerned about that exact West Bank . Weve been concerned about that exact things West Bank . Weve been concerned about that exact things since about that exact things since the 8th Of October in one of the 8th Of October in one of the very earliest comments made by President Biden after the 7th of October Attacks was in fact to express his deep personal, and our Administrations Concern over Settler Violence in the West Bank. It is a major concern for us. It is. There is an awful lot of effort rightly being applied to helping israel defend itself against the threat of hamas and to help them continue to conduct operations In Gaza. And as we have said since the very beginning, we do not want to see this conflict with hamas in Gaza Escalator become broader in the region, and that includes broader inside israel, which is why we have been working so hard to keep a second front from opening up with hezbollah and certainly underscores why we have been working so hard and have been so vocal about our concerns on Settler Violence in the West Bank. , , Settler Violence in the West Bank. ,. , bank. There has been an increase bank. There has been an increase in bank. There has been an increase in that bank. There has been an increase in that very bank. There has been an increase in that very recently. There has been. And it is deeply disturbing. It is very concerning to us. We have also expressed continually, and certainly in recent days expressed that to our israeli counterparts, the Settler Violence has to stop. Its counterproductive to Peace And Security for the palestinian people in the West Bank but it is also counterproductive to the possibility of achieving a student two state solution. And as we have seen today, it has a real gleeful consequences. Has a real gleeful conseuuences. ,. , consequences. It has real dire consequences. Elsewhere in the West Bank the israeli army has withdrawn from jenin after operation lasting nearly ten days. The palestinian Health Ministry says 36 people were Killed in one of israels largest operations in the West Bank in years. Residents were displaced as israeli forces damaged buildings and other infrastructure in the northern West Bank. People are now returning home, though Water And Electricity remain mostly cut off injenin, In Gaza, un agencies and partner organizations have begun the second stage of a major polio vaccination campaign. The rollout comes a month after authorities confirmed the first case of polio seen In Gaza in 25 years which left a io month old partially paralyzed. The Vaccine Rollout began on September 1st and since then. The World Health Organization says organization says 411,301 children have been vaccinated In Gaza. The ultimate goal is to vaccinate 640,000 children In Gaza against polio. The rollout is relying on a series of agreed upon pauses in fighting between israel and hamas. I spoke to dr peeperkorn, the World Health Organizations representative in the palestinian territory, about how the rollout is progressing. Talk to us first of all about how the Polio Vaccine Roll out is going. How many children have you managed to give a first dose to so far . Yesterday, we started a campaign Roll Out in South Gaza in the south, we have already in the south, we have already in the south, we have already in the middle area, the central area, one of the 90 3000, one of the 95 in totally we now have 11,301 children vaccinated. After 640,000 children. I think it is already an amazing achievement. And an amazing achievement. And talk to us an amazing achievement. And talk to us about an amazing achievement. And talk to us about how the pauses in fighting or working out. Is It Safe for parents to bring their children to you . Are they very temporary Cease Fires in place . Very temporary ceasefires in lace . ~ , very temporary ceasefires in lace . , ~ ,. ,. , place . Yeah, i think it is good news. I think place . Yeah, i think it is good news. I think the place . Yeah, i think it is good news. I think the area news. I think the area specifically, for humanitarian pauses, i would say its a good start to what we are seeing currently. This area, its absolutely critical, because parents and children cannot come out, but also 2200 Polio Health workers, polio teams cannot go out. Today in the south, yesterday, we talk about 513 teams, numerous mobile Teams Outreach teams, etc. So this is absolutely critical. Its probably the most important part of this very complex puzzle. Important part of this very complex puzzle. And beyond these vaccines, complex puzzle. And beyond these vaccines, beyond complex puzzle. And beyond | these vaccines, beyond these temporary humanitarian pauses, we know of course the Health Service In Gaza is barely functional. The situation remains dire. Talk to us a little bit about what you are seeing as you travel around and give these vaccines . Give these vaccines . Yeah, i think that give these vaccines . Yeah, i think that is give these vaccines . Yeah, i think that is a give these vaccines . Yeah, i think that is a very give these vaccines . Yeah, i think that is a very good think that is a very good point. This is my sixth long term visiting gaza. And we have to work at a little bit. Its almost we are a little bit in a polio bubble. So much overall, humanitarian operational response in health, in water and sanitation, and food security, shelter, they continue to unnecessarily suffer due to the same issues we have been raising for the last 11 months. So in sufficient volume of Essential Supplies getting into gaza. Enormous challenges due to the insecurity and the mechanism, many, many missions get cancelled or delayed, the lack of cash, electricity, etc. So if you want to be s philosophical about it and the question of advice, when this can all kind of work for polio campaign, why not for the so much needed humanitarian support overall . Much needed humanitarian support overall . Well, support overall . Why not . Well, i think support overall . Why not . Well, i think that support overall . Why not . Well, | think that is support overall . Why not . Well, i think that is for support overall . Why not . Well, i think that is for me support overall . Why not . Well, i think that is for me to support overall . Why not . Well, i think that is for me to my support overall . Why not . Well, i think that is for me to my me l i think that is for me to my me thatis i think that is for me to my me that is the big question. And i think its kind of unacceptable that 11 months in this crisis, a lot of the humanitarian agencies, the un come a lot of humanitarian agencies, we are raising the same issues again and again and again, and we make so little progress in that sense. We should not, we should have a functional mechanism. We should have the last three weeks only for the who, from our eight missions to the north, we only got three, three missions through ringing in supplies, fuel, getting patients out, getting a medical team in. Those should be routine missions by now, and they should work. The question is why not . I think we have to get together and we have to make this work. Finally, of course, if you really want to move forward, looking at health only, the Health Functionality is incredibly poor. 16 out of 36 hospitals are barely functional. 150 primary Health Care facilities are barely functional. We have seen this enormous increase in infectious diseases and not on the acute respiratory specifically diarrhoea amongst children, 25 times what is normally seen. One of the 10,000 cases of hepatitis a s, and its incredibly poor Water Sanitation conditions, which is also, again, a Breeding Ground not only for these diseases but also for polio. We have seen a very well functioning programme like Routine Immunisation programmes, incredible suffering, and thats why we see now or under immunise children, which was never the case In Gaza, they had a Routine Immunisation for 95 . Now, for all of this to work again, of course there is a solution. We have to enforce a Cease Fire and hopefully a Peace Process and start thinking of recovery and another way forward. Anxious relatives waited to hear whether their Son Or Nephew might still be alive. Emergency services brought in to give psychological care, the scramble to determine who lived and who died has drawn national attention. We still have 17 kids that are unaccounted. That does not mean that they have perished or they are injured, the word is that they are unaccounted for. We are praying and hoping for the best. Dna tests will identify the bodies. It may be harder to find what triggered this terrible tragedy. There have been a lot of fires in kenyan Boarding Schools over the years, many of them said to be because of arson. For american voters, the economy remains their top priority. And on friday one of the most important gauges of the us economy was released, providing a mixed review. The us Bureau Of Labor Statistics released its monthly reportshowing us employers added 142,000 jobs in august, slightly fewer than the 160,000 Jobs Economists had predicted. However, the Unemployment Rate dropped slightly to 4. 2 from 4. 3 injuly. It comes as the us Federal Reserve is preparing to cut Interest Rates for the first time since 2020. Our North America Business Correspondent Michelle Fleury has the latest from New York. Ahead of a crucial federal Reserve Meeting to set Interest Rate policy, us employers and 142,000 jobs in august, more than the previous month, but below expectations. Gains for the two previous months were also revised down. The latest figures confirm a slowdown is under way in Americas Labour markets, even as the Unemployment Rate dropped slightly and wages group. Forsome, its raising fears that Interest Rates in the worlds largest economy may have been too high for too long. The Federal Reserve does have a chance to do something about this. The us Central Bank which meets next week is planning its first Interest Rate cut in four years. The question is what will be the scale of that cut . The difficult task of taming inflation without tanking the economy, well it comes at a critical time with the us economy a top issue for voters in novembers looming president ial election. Joining me to discuss isjeff stein, White House economic reporter at the washington post. What is your reading of this . Do you think it is going to impact the feds longer Term Plan to cut Interest Rates . Everything we have been hearing since the Jobs Report came out todayis since the Jobs Report came out today is that the Federal Reserve is likely the only cost by 25 Basis Points as opposed to the bigger 50 Basis Points that many advocates and i think certainly the White House would love to see to get the economy moving again and stave off some of the fears that were just alluded to. The Labour Market has slowed down quite significantly. About A Million more people unemployed today than there were last summer and that has economists worried that has economists worried that the break has been on being hit too hard for too long. Weve had Interest Rates at five and a half percent, basically two decades high for a number of years now. And so the question is when will the fed start to cut more aggressively . Everything im hearing is that they are still reluctant to do that ahead of this upcoming September Meeting. This upcoming September Meeting this upcoming september meetint. ~. , meeting. But the fact that it came in weaker suggest that the economy is not doing as well, but the fact that the Economy Isnt doing as well as the federal cut will more aggressive if the number were higher, its a very capitated picture. I think it seems very clear that voters are very upset about high Housing Prices which are sensitive to Interest Rates and the Ability And Lack of hope around people in being able to get low Rate Loans has hurt biden and by Extension Harriss Approval ratings on the economy, so i think overall a bigger Interest Rate cut would be more welcome by the White House. ,. ,. And if you had said, if you told me two years ago that the Inflation Rate would be down close to 2 and Biden Wouldnt even be on the ticket, i wouldnt believe it. But, you know, the voters are still angry about that, but whether they will blame harris for that is really the key question. Donald trump welcomed a new Yorkjudges Sentencing Delay in his manhattan Criminal Case on friday after he and his legal team had argued for postponement and the dismissal of the case altogether. Justicejuan merchan ordered the republican president ial Nominees Sentencing for November 26th after the us election. In his decision, Justice Merchan emphasized the courts apolitical nature, writing that the delay, should dispel any suggestion that the court will have issued any decision or imposed sentenced in favor of any political party or candidate. Trump was convicted by a jury on 34 Felony Counts of falsifying Business Records back in may, but has maintained his innocence in the case. Earlier the former president characterized the case as Election Interference at an address to the Fraternal Order Of Police in the Battleground State of north carolina. Mr trump was also in court on friday for a separate legal case, as his lawyers attempted to overturn a ruling that he defamed and sexually assaulted Writer E Jean carroll. Ourjohn sudworth has the details. Well, Donald Trump spent part of today in a somewhat unusual Press Conference here at Trump Tower behind me relitigating the civil Sexual Assault of ruling against him that hes currently appealing in a New York court. He attacked the integrity of the person who won the case, a former writer. He suggested that he had never met her before. The sorts of claims, of course, that in Part Led to the very substantial Defamation Damages against him and the spectacle of him going through in painstaking detail, not only those allegations but other Assault Allegations against him, all to deny them, of course, some observers seems like some what odd Election Campaign strategy with just nine weeks to go until the election. Nonetheless, shortly afterwards, he was handed what will be seen by many as something of a victory in another case that he faces, his New York criminal trial for the payment of Hush Money to the former adult film star, stormy daniels, in order to try to influence the 2016 election to keep the allegations of a sexual encounter with her from the american public. The judge in that Case Today has ruled that he will delay sentencing, just as Mr Trumps lawyers had asked him to, because he said he wanted to avoid the impression, however unwarranted, that the case was designed to somehow influence the election. Of course, what it means is that american voters will be denied the opportunity of knowing what sentence Mr Trump will be given for those book keeping offences. Will he simply be given a fine . Or will he, however unlikely many people believe it is, but it is still a possibility, will he be given a custodial sentence . That knowledge now will have to wait until after november the 5th. We had sunny skies in western scotland, and in northern ireland, temperatures reached 27 degrees the hottest its been all year. It was quite a Bit Cooler here at the oval for the test match, where we struggled with bad light. Doesnt look quite so gloomy for saturday. Very misty, murky conditions, though, in bristol, where weve seen Rain Pushing in earlier on in the night and into South Wales as well, with some thunderstorms, too. Thats going to be clearing away later, and its going to be quite a warm start to saturday, muggy as well. And because of that weve got extensive low clouds, some mist and some fog around for england and wales, so things may improve a little. It may cheer up a bit, but there may not be too much sunshine around more cloud producing a few showers here and there. Looks dry for scotland, northern ireland, sunny for the most part, but that low cloud retreating back to the East Coast of scotland keeping it cooler here. But in the sunshine in scotland, and northern Ireland Temperatures again into the mid 20s, and it may warm up where we get a bit of sunshine in east anglia, although not as warm as it was on friday. Weve got this area of low pressure is going to bring some wetter weather overnight on saturday night, Heavy Rain and some thunderstorms, perhaps already arriving during the evening across these southern areas, and that rain will push its way northwards into england and wales. Drier for scotland and northern ireland, some clear spells, but also some mist and low cloud, again, filtering through the Central Belt of scotland and lingering along the East Coast of scotland. But another quite warm start to sunday. But it comes with a lot of cloud, and weve got these showers, along with spells of rain affecting england and wales. Again, it could be heavy and thundery. A few showers popping up towards the southeast of scotland. Otherwise scotland, northern ireland, generally dry but more cloud around, so its going to be quite a Bit Cooler, particularly so for northern ireland. If we get a bit of sunshine in the midlands across to lincolnshire, that could pop off a few thundery showers here. Now that area of low pressure is going to move away on monday, so it starts to turn drier, but then we change the wind direction. Were going to pick up more of a North Westerly wind over the week ahead, and that will make it feel quite a Bit Cooler as well. Now, most of the wet weather next week will be more towards the North West of the uk this time the drier weather in the southeast but those temperatures are going to be lower, perhaps peaking at only 13 or 14 in belfast and edinburgh.
