Elsewhere in the West Bank the israeli army has withdrawn from jenin after operation lasting nearly ten days. The palestinian Health Ministry says 36 people were Killed in one of israels largest operations in the West Bank in years. Residents were displaced as israeli forces damaged buildings and other infrastructure in the northern West Bank. People are now returning home, though Water And Electricity remain mostly cut off injenin, In Gaza, un agencies and partner organizations have begun the second stage of a major polio vaccination campaign. The rollout comes a month after authorities confirmed the first case of polio seen In Gaza in 25 years which left a io month old partially paralyzed. The Vaccine Rollout began on September 1st and since then. The World Health Organization says organization says 411,301 children have been vaccinated In Gaza. The ultimate goal is to vaccinate 640,000 children In Gaza against polio. The rollout is relying on a series of agreed upon pauses in fighting between israel and hamas. I spoke to dr peeperkorn, the World Health Organizations representative in the palestinian territory, about how the rollout is progressing. Talk to us first of all about how the Polio Vaccine Roll out is going. How many children have you managed to give a first dose to so far . Yesterday, we started a campaign Roll Out in South Gaza in the south, we have already in the south, we have already in the south, we have already in the middle area, the central area, one of the 90 3000, one of the 95 in totally we now have 11,301 children vaccinated. Today in the south, yesterday, we talk about 513 teams, numerous mobile Teams Outreach teams, etc. So this is absolutely critical. Its probably the most important part of this very complex puzzle. And beyond | these vaccines, beyond these temporary humanitarian pauses, we know of course the Health Service In Gaza is barely functional. The situation remains dire. So much overall, humanitarian operational response in health, in water and sanitation, and food security, shelter, they continue to unnecessarily suffer due to the same issues we have been raising for the last 11 months. So in sufficient volume of Essential Supplies getting into gaza. Enormous challenges due to the insecurity and the mechanism, many, many missions get cancelled or delayed, the lack of cash, electricity, etc. So if you want to be s philosophical about it and the question of advice, when this can all kind of work for polio campaign, why not for the so much needed humanitarian support overall . And i think its kind of unacceptable that 11 months in this crisis, a lot of the humanitarian agencies, the un come a lot of humanitarian agencies, we are raising the same issues again and again and again, and we make so little progress in that sense. We should not, we should have a functional mechanism. We should have the last three weeks only for the who, from our eight missions to the north, we only got three, three missions through ringing in supplies, fuel, getting patients out, getting a medical team in. Those should be routine missions by now, and they should work. The question is why not . I think we have to get together and we have to make this work. Finally, of course, if you really want to move forward, looking at health only, the Health Functionality is incredibly poor. 16 out of 36 hospitals are barely functional. 150 primary Health Care facilities are barely functional. We have seen this enormous increase in infectious diseases and not on the acute respiratory specifically diarrhoea amongst children, 25 times what is normally seen. One of the 10,000 cases of hepatitis a s, and its incredibly poor Water Sanitation conditions, which is also, again, a Breeding Ground not only for these diseases but also for polio. We have seen a very well functioning programme like Routine Immunisation programmes, incredible suffering, and thats why we see now or under immunise children, which was never the case In Gaza, they had a Routine Immunisation for 95 . Now, for all of this to work again, of course there is a solution. We have to enforce a Cease Fire and hopefully a Peace Process and start thinking of recovery and another way forward. A fire at a Boarding School in Central Kenya has Killed at least 17 students. 70 children are unaccounted for after the blaze at the primary Schools Dormitory on thursday evening. Hundreds of people tried to help rescue the children, many of whom were sheltering under their beds. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
