it's not clear if the incident is connected to the euros tournament. earlier my colleague spoke to gary rose on the telephone who is currently in hamburg. i'm at the stadium now, which is around about five miles away from the centre of hamburg. i was in the fan zone area this morning where it seems reported that this incident took place. and there was thousands of dutch fans at that point because they always do a traditional walk to the stadium. and throughout the morning, obviously, there was no indication of any trouble. since i've got to the stadium, that's when the news developed. and at the moment, everything seems to be going ahead here as planned, basically. how many supporters are in the city? so, this fan walk particularly was expected to be around 30,000 dutch fans. i would imagine there's sort of similar—ish figures for the polish fans as well. majority, this is about a 40,000, 45,000—seat stadium. so with 15,000 tickets sold, i believe, for each sets of supporters, so around 30,000, to 40,000 should be closer to the stadium than they were in the city centre at the time. more than two years since russia's invasion of ukraine and world leaders have been gathering in switzerland for a summit aimed at pressuring moscow to end the conflict. russia was notably absent from the meeting. as the two—day event concluded, ukraine's president volodymr zelensky said he hoped that results could be achieved as soon as possible. the final declaraton signed by dozens of countries said it was committed to ukraine's territorial integrity. some countries didn't sign up to the document including india, south africa and saudi arabia. here is the ukrainian president, volodymyr zelensky, speaking in the past hour. i thank all the participants of the first summit for taking the first steps towards peace together. we are responding to russia's full—scale invasion of ukraine, not only with a full—scale defence of human life but also with full—scale diplomacy. these days, united 101 countries and international organisations have big success for ukraine and all partners, and our objective is to get all countries of the world to join this noble cause. previous political generations have left the un charter as a basis for the cooperation of peoples. we will pass to the next generations an effective mechanism to implement the un charter and the communique adopted and the summit these days fully reflects our intention and remains open for accession by everyone who respects the un charter. the president of the european commission, ursula von der leyen, said the eu will continue standing with ukraine and called russia to bring to an end its "imperialist violenence". ultimately, it will be for ukraine to determine the conditions of a just peace. the european union will support you in this and it will continue to rally support across the globe. we can build on the un general assembly resolution of february 2023. it clearly expressed the need for comprehensive and lasting and lasting justice and peace. this resolution was approved by 1111 countries, the vast majority of whom joined this summit. and i call on russia to heed the message of the international community, respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of ukraine, put an end to imperialist violence and bring back the children. when russia says it is ready for peace based on the un charter, then the time will come for russia to be part of our efforts to bring the path to peace to its destination and i hope, and i work for this day to come soon. let's speak to our eastern europe correspondent sarah rainsford who's in switzerland. what substantive change can this two—day meeting actually bring about? i two-day meeting actually bring about? ~ , two-day meeting actually bring about? ~' , w two-day meeting actually bring about? ~' , m ., , about? i think the very fact it has ha--ened about? i think the very fact it has happened and — about? i think the very fact it has happened and the _ about? i think the very fact it has happened and the fact _ about? i think the very fact it has happened and the fact that - about? i think the very fact it has happened and the fact that so - about? i think the very fact it has i happened and the fact that so many countries came together here at this lakeside resort in switzerland is already an important moment in this war in ukraine. it has been more than two years in ukraine itself, that whole process has been devastating, thousands and thousands of people killed, many injured and a war that at this point shows no sign of ending. this is really ukraine it seizing the initiative and saying look, we have always said we want peace, we don't want war and this is how we think we can achieve that. it now has switzerland on board as they host a factory of a process that is beginning a tentative first steps here but it can go a lot further. we have just heard from president zelensky himself talking about what is here, the support they have had. they have signed a communique, a few countries did notjoin out, president zelensky said he was not worried by that and he thought when they got higher levels of support they got higher levels of support they would join that but it was noticeable it was countries like saudi arabia and mexico who have spoken out more critically he did notjoin. i think it is an important first step and i think president zelensky himself mentioned so many countries were here and he is calling that a great success, but russia and china were not here and it is a long way to go until you can call this a successful stop other countries we were hearing notably did not sign up to the communique were india and south africa. what comes next after this meeting? in ukraine itself of course more war, that hasn't ended. we can't forget what this is all about and it was interesting president zelensky was asked several times about why this peace process was taking place now. i asked him did it mean ukraine wasn't getting the international support it needed as quickly as it neededin support it needed as quickly as it needed in order to win on the battlefield and did it mean they were worried about the us elections and the potential of a change of leadership in america reducing support for ukraine militarily? he was very strong in saying he believed that international support for ukraine remained strong and what he answered in fact was at ukraine and the world needs to stand up to russia with strength he said, strength on the battlefield and strength on the battlefield and strength and diplomacy. he felt that this process was an important first step in that, but of course we have heard from vladimir putin on the eve of this summit, essentially delivering an ultimatum to ukraine saying ukrainian forces had to withdraw from even territory ukraine currently controls. moscow taking a real maximalist position at this point, not invited to this process, but ukraine and the host here, switzerland, saying russia will have to be drawn on at some point but the idea is there will be a concrete plan before that point, a concrete plan before that point, a concrete plan that can be presented to russia and when russia actually does want peace, as ukraine says, it will be invited to the process. that peace, as ukraine says, it will be invited to the process.— invited to the process. that was kind of what _ invited to the process. that was kind of what i _ invited to the process. that was kind of what i was _ invited to the process. that was kind of what i was going - invited to the process. that was kind of what i was going to - invited to the process. that was kind of what i was going to ask| invited to the process. that was - kind of what i was going to ask you, will russia take note of what has been happening here at all or is thisjust to them been happening here at all or is this just to them an unnecessary distraction? that is right, it happened in hamburg, the northern german city about 300 kilometres from here and the local police there have confirmed to the bbc that what happened is that was a suspect who had a small pickaxe and at some point tried to light a petrol bomb, but the police were able to first of all pepper spray him and then they were able to shoot the man. they shot him and the leg, he was taken to hospital and i think very much the incident was declared over and that was the end of it, but certainly for a time there was some anxiety in hamburg. in terms of a motive, that is by no means clear, we don't know what that motive may well have been. qm. we don't know what that motive may well have been.— well have been. 0k, thank you very much. so well have been. 0k, thank you very much- so no _ well have been. 0k, thank you very much. so no more _ well have been. 0k, thank you very much. so no more really— well have been. 0k, thank you very much. so no more really from - well have been. 0k, thank you very much. so no more really from the l much. so no more really from the police than what you have just said? already the authorities have prevented known hooligans from travelling here. —— the england serbia game being high—risk. they also said they were aware of around 500 serbian fans who may want to come here and cause trouble so they are concerned that could be a recipe for some sort of violence. it is here to tell it this point because often violence has been out of the smallest spot, but we know it is a huge operation for the german police and they want to keep everyone safe so they can enjoy the football and that remains the focus. ., ., the football and that remains the focus. ., ~' , ., , . the football and that remains the focus. . ,, , . focus. thank you very much, as the countdown — focus. thank you very much, as the countdown to _ focus. thank you very much, as the countdown to england's _ focus. thank you very much, as the countdown to england's debut - focus. thank you very much, as the countdown to england's debut in i focus. thank you very much, as the | countdown to england's debut in the euro 2024 tournament is getting ever closer. the israeli military has announced what it's calling a daily "tactical pause of military activity" along a key road in a part of southern gaza, but it emphasised that there is no ceasefire and combat would continue in the city of rafah. it says the halt in operations will be during daylight hours to enable humanitarian aid to be delivered to palestinians. aid organisations have repeatedly warned of a humanitarian crisis in gaza. israel has released the names the hamas run health ministry has said 37,337 people have now been killed since the start of the israeli military offensive. israel has released the names of the eight soldiers killed by a hamas rocket in rafah on saturday the deadliest incident for its troops in six months. the israeli army said the incident occurred during what it called "operational activity" in the city of rafah. the prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, has said the war should continue regardless. it comes as israel's minister is due to visit washington at shortly to discuss president biden's recent ceasefire plan. a short while ago i spoke tojon donnison about what a tactical pause means. i'm not sure it means too much of a change, really. certainly we have been getting very mixed messages from the israeli military today. we woke up first thing this morning to hear news of this tactical military pause that apparently would take place daily between the hours of eight o'clock in the morning and seven o'clock in the evening and that was to allow aid to pass in through the kerem shalom crossing from israel into gaza which is right in the south of gaza, very close to rafah, and then to travel along towards the main road which stretches right from the north of gaza to the south. however, within about an hour, we had a clarification from the israeli military who said that this did not mean an end to fighting in rafah or in southern gaza and we had some very strong comments from israel's national security minister, the hardline right winger itamar ben—gvir who said whoever made the decision for a pause in fighting was both evil and a fool. wow, strong words there. one of the main questions is what difference this might make for much—needed humanitarian aid. it is certainly desperately needed, you have the united nations saying more than a million people in gaza facing starvation within a matter of weeks. israel maintains it is allowing trucks into gaza, it says it is allowing about 200 trucks in through kerem shalom every day and the problem is on the other side of the border where aid agencies are failing to pick those trucks up and distribute the aid. of course, aid agencies say it is too dangerous in many cases to do so because kerem shalom is so close to rafah. you have to remember of course that the border with egypt, the rafah crossing, that is closed entirely because israeli forces have now taken control of that whole border and there is a huge backlog of trucks, thousands of them on the egyptian side of the border waiting to pass in. the aid agencies maintain there simply isn't enough aid getting into gaza at the moment, israel rejects the idea that there is any sort of humanitarian crisis there. the latest for us from jerusalem. and of course there is much more on developments in the middle east on the bbc news website. now it's time for a look at today's sport. thank you. we are going to start with the european championship. three matches on sunday, two of the favourites, england and the netherlands both in action. the dutch art into the second half of their match against poland at the moment in hamburg, poland without robert lewandowski with a hamstring industry, they took the lead early but the netherlands finding their equaliser. it is now 1—1. attention will turn to group c, denmark take on slovenia at the thought the runners—up from three years ago, england, get their campaign under way against serbia. bier?
