a revolution is rising across myanmar. hidden from the world by its remoteness and the military*s determination to keep journalists out. we arrive by river under a haze of wood smoke from burning crop fires. the journey ahead is long. there's no easy way to reach this conflict. we're entering dangerous waters. the river traffic thins out. not farfrom here, the boats will be in range of the army's mortars. so everything that's needed is ferried across. a bridgejust upriver is too risky for most. the tide is turning here, and it's the young carrying the burden. they are the power behind the insurgency. their effort is to drive out the military here in karenni state, and across myanmar. it's tough going. we spent a month with the insurgents. they are pushing back against the army. they've forced them out of most of their territory, but main roads are still in range of the military*s guns and warplanes. so we take the long way round. it's a gruelling wilderness. myanmar*s been under military rule for more than half a century. the coup in 2021 halted the transition to democracy. the military still has control of its main cities, including yangon, the capital naypyidaw, and mandalay. but in the last seven months, a rebellion has swept the country, gaining hold in the north... ..the west... ..and the east. it was karenni state we first travelled to, beginning ourjourney in hpasang. many of the main routes are mined. back roads are safer. we head for the deep cover of the jungle in search of the insurgents and civilians hiding out of sight from army aircraft. in many respects, this is a war from another time. after a sleepless night, the insurgent commander charged with keeping the army surrounded is still early to rise. he fights with kalalata, a group that has fought for and against the ruling military over the decades. but now he and his men stand firmly against thejunta. he's off on his dawn patrol of front—line positions. it's usually quieter in the mornings, but there's always the risk of a sneak attack. the army base lies at the end of this road. explosion he knows this ground well — and its dangers. explosion still, his patrols are made in flip—flops. all of the insurgents are lightly armed. this stand—off is a waiting game. time is on their side, he says. guitar playing he sings this is a war of the generations — of the young against the old. living and fighting together... ..one voice with a single enemy: the dictatorship. this has become their life, away from home's comforts, from family and friends. many left school, university, for the battlefield and for armed struggle. he isjust 18. but this is a revolution on a shoestring. of old weapons and scant supplies of body armour. shells too are limited. they don't have enough of anything to directly attack the base yet. every bullet counts, and is counted... ..but a shortage of ammo won't stop them. they have other ways to attempt to make the junta's soldiers submit. a squad of snipers arrive and make straight for the front line. they are headed for a position overlooking the army base. he pants this forgotten conflict is hard to reach. explosion across myanmar, the insurgents* ascent has taken hold. here in hpasang, they're trying persuasion over might. loudspeakers to broadcast an appeal to surrender. doing the persuading is nay myo zin. he defected to the opposition cause after 12 years with the military. explosion what's happening down there? but, for now, the soldiers in the base below don't appear to be in a listening mood. he's tried this at other bases too. few ever surrender. hello? cease fire. cease fire, please. there are 80 men still holding out in the base, which is surrounded. around 100 are dead. he promises if they surrender, their lives will be spared. few of the young fighters expect he'll have much luck today. and neither does kosai. so the men there... explosion ..as you can hear, they still have plenty of weaponry, despite the fact that they've been stuck in that base for a month. so these men are... they've sent their message. they've had their response. it doesn't look like they're surrendering today, so they're withdrawing. later that day, the hillside would be hit by an air strike. there were no casualties. military music hundreds of young burmese are voting with their feet and straight into the ranks of the opposition karenni nationalities defence force. today is their passing—out parade. in only a month, they've learned to march — to an american song — and the basics ofjungle warfare. they've never had so many graduate at once. shouts orders taking the salute is maui pho thaike, a kndf deputy commander. all shout from here, they'll head to the front. their training has been gruelling, but now it's time to celebrate. music playing over the last six months, the tide has really turned on the battlefield here. but what does that look like? we are controlling like 90% of our own land again and back from the enemy. so burma army are hiding in their infantry bases. they are not able to get out. they... all their outposts in outskirt of the city are gone. so our, uh, resistance forces joins together and fight together and make them, like, fall back. the military rulers in this country have everything. how are you going to defeat that advantage? they have the artillery. they have the aeroplanes. they have the mortars. we do have enough heart. we do have enough morale. we do have enough humanity. that's the way how we're going to defeat them. even we don't have physical material, or not enough. but this is enough. he's led from the front, and paid the price, here being treated on the battlefield. and so have his soldiers too. gunfire this is a ferocious war, and casualties run high. despite the best efforts of medics, hundreds of kndf have been killed or lost their limbs. tens of thousands have already died, but it's myanmar*s youth who are sacrificing most. aung ngle isjust 23. he took shrapnel to his femoral artery in an attack on a military base in nearby moebye. his mother is by his bedside. his comrades comfort him as much as they can. not all revolutionaries, though, carry a gun. dr yori runs the secret hospital where they treat insurgents and civilians alike. baby cries i just don't want you guys to give away our location for security measures. so this is our operating theatre room. it's underground. the reason the operating theatre is underground is because if we are over the ground, they can see us, and if they see us, they will bomb us. so we have to go underground. in the light blue is his fiancee, dr tracy. she's operating on a soldier hit by artillery. they were both in their final year of medical school in yangon when the coup happened. they fled here together, as far away as possible, to continue their fight. we've met some of the wounded here today. yeah. they're young men. yeah, very young. very young. with their whole lives ahead of them. yeah. and they have horrible injuries. how do you both cope with that mentally? sometimes we have to face those situations. uh, our mental is not stable. that's right. but, uh, we can cry the whole day. it's ok. let it... let it cry. let we cry. everything is ok. but we have to stand up again. because if we are not here, who would treat those patients? that's it. the fight for truth comes at a terrible cost. myanmar is now one of the most heavily mined countries in the world. this is war*s devastating toll. in the kndf, we have more than 350, our brother and sister already sacrificed their lives. more than 200 sacrificed for their body parts. at the same time, as you see this morning, hundreds of people are willing to join with us and willing to fight against the burma army. so those are our strengths. and so it is for sam and cobra. there are friendships formed in times of peace that have grown stronger in myanmar*s war. they once studied here in the state capital, loikaw. now they patrol its streets for the kndf. they were national karate champs who travelled asia for their country... ..a country that betrayed them. both have been injured more than once. the resistance and military forces have been in a stand—off here in loikaw since november. at the ends of these streets lurk army snipers. go. move, move! taking up arms is all that's left to them. sam and cobra say they will defend these front lines, whatever the cost. this is the heart of loikaw, downtown. look at the state of it, though. there's destruction everywhere. if we just look over here... look at the destruction in the buildings. this is... incendiary drones were dropped here. artillery, air strikes. we know this was the military junta because the rebels don't have that kind of weaponry. notice something else. silence. because there are no civilians here. they fled, because the junta doesn't distinguish between rebel fighters, between resistance fighters and civilians. it's labelled them all as terrorists. in fact, about eight kilometres from here, just yesterday, a military air strike killed a family of six, including two children. so wherever they attack, they turn these places into ghost towns. and in this fight, myanmar*s resistance stands alone. the military*s brutality has gone unseen. explosion a relentless air campaign has civilians running for their lives. many thousands have been killed since the coup. the bombs fall daily, and mortars and artillery too. explosion at this base, a sudden counteroffensive against the kndf, and mortars start landing around us. none of these insurgents have body armour or helmets, and neither do we, so we head for the only available cover. let's get into these trenches here. they barely offer any protection, but there's nowhere else to go. it's time to get low. there's another one. so that's, i think, three shells have come in in the last five minutes, and you really get the sense of what this conflict is about, because that is a professional military over there firing artillery, firing mortars. these men are irregulars. they're a strong alliance, a ragtag of rebel groups, and they've had a lot of success. but they're taking on a professional army. explosion and the army is edging closer. beyond these banana trees, soldiers are crawling through the undergrowth. 500 or 700? 500 or 700 metres? now it's not safe. so whether we go back and later we can decide again and come. we can come back any time. let's go. but fast. move fast. the kndf are used to frontal attacks, but this is unexpected. let's go, let's go, let's go. let's get out of range. go, go, go! so it looks like as we arrived here, military spotted the vehicles coming in. so they've been training their guns in this area vaguely before, landed while we were here. uh, the commander said it's just not safe, we have to get out of here. so we're going to head back to their second line, which hopefully is out of range of their weapons. directly ahead of us a fresh mortar strike. they're narrowing in on the vehicle. just look right here. that's another one just landed behind us. just keep driving, philip, fast as you can. seems like they're trained on the road. just checking to see if our other vehicle's made it. in the car following behind us, they strike even nearer. explosion 0of! crack get up very quickly. they have a drone, 0k? so it's dangerous. they have drones following us now. just go straight in, philip. go straight in. don't bother... go straight in, straight in. finally, we make it to cover, out of range of the shelling, out of sight of the drone. both cars and everyone inside are safe. violin playing and the jungle's canopy offers protection to myanmar*s schoolchildren, too. despite the war, songs are still heard and ballads still played by these students at the golden flower music school. the violin of their teacher, maw hpray myar, drowns out the din of war. some of her students are as young as 14. this is their refuge for now. their families have sent them here to learn, and to keep them safe. she instructs pupils we met a lot of young people here today. soon some of them will have to go and fight. how does that make you feel? # nowhere to run # nowhere to hide...# and these children put their heart and soul into their music. the cost of this terrible war is neverfarfrom their minds, or their song. and some might never come back. and this isjust a glimpse of the toll that myanmar*s war takes on maw hpray myar, and an entire generation of myanmar*s young, in their fight for freedom. # oh my people # save my people...# live from london, this is bbc news. world leaders agree a draft declaration — reaffirming territorial integrity in ukraine — at a summit focused on ending the conflict. tens of thousands take to the streets in tel aviv, calling for the release of hostages from gaza as israel's prime minister vows to continue the war. and china's premier visits australia where he says ties between the two countries are "back on track." hello. i'm lauren taylor. world leaders will continue their meetings in switzerland in the coming hours at the ukraine peace summit. late on saturday night local time, a draft communique was issued. it reaffirmed the territorial integrity of ukraine and stated *unambiguously* that any threat or use of nuclear weapons against it was inadmissible. it warned that food security must not be weaponised in any way. the draft also called for a *complete exchange' of prisoners of war, and for the return of displaced ukrainian children and civilians.
