From the campus. Lets just take you through a couple of them that we have. This one is showing protesters away from the specific confrontation with the police. Lets take a look at some of the other live feeds. This one is closer to the action, with Police Officers on one side and pro palestinian protesters, demonstrated on the other. In the last a0 minutes or so, police picked one side of the encampment. It is a Barricade Tent behind it. They picked one area behind it and started picking away at the barricades and moving closer to the protesters. We have seen a number of arrests since then. Right now, it seems to be apart from the flashing lights, a slight pause and a slight period of calm. But lets show you some of the recent images from the last hour. Firstly, lets have a look at this. Just to reemphasise, these are not live pictures, but this is what happens within the last hour or so, the plywood is there, the barricades of the pro palestinian students there, on the ucla campus, they start to be taken down by police. They targeted one specific area, to try and break through. To basically get rid of that barrier between them and the students. As have a look at some other recent pictures. These are not live, this gives you a sense of what been happening. We dont know if thatis been happening. We dont know if that is a smoke bomb, tear gas or fire extinguisher. There have been a bottle is shown from the line of tents, the camp is on the left hand side, of the students, the protesters on the right hand side desperately protesters on the left hand side, and on the right hand side of the police. You can see the Police Officers dressed in black and you can see the plywood, the barricades, what they have been doing, going to the left, dragging tents, umbrellas, bits of words, and throwing them behind that line of Police Officers, trying to make a dent in that barricade, trying to make some sort of inroad. They did give plenty of warning to those students in terms of requests to leave, they said that the encampment was unlawful and that they would be arrested and asked to leave. This is how those requests are going. I think we have one more bit of are going. I think we have one more hit of footage from the last hour or bit of footage from the last hour or so, just to bring you, to give you a sense of what has been happening. What time is it the . It is around four oclock in the morning. It started, there was a whisper that something would happen around midnight local time, there were megaphones, loudspeakers, telling students there was an unlawful encampment here and that they should leave. Around three oclock, 3 30am, the first real engagement happens, with offices dismantling that first bit of the barricades. Lets check in with the live images of what is happening now. These are the live pictures now. As we keep an eye on those, we can cross to my colleague, Helena Humphreys who was at the scene for us now. Hi, helena, just before we get started, could you let us know the lay of the land, where you are, and why it is we are looking out behind you, and where you are . Give us a sense of the geography. You are mentionina us a sense of the geography. You are mentioning exactly us a sense of the geography. You are mentioning exactly how us a sense of the geography. You are mentioning exactly how authorities. Mentioning exactly how authorities decided to go about moving in, and so what you can see behind me, perhaps, just where those three Police Officers are right now, they are moving to one side, but you can see that was thick gap they managed to create in the encampment, by turning away at those barricades. The plywood that has been reinforced, throughout the course of the day, after scenes of violence last night, they had been hammering away at it and they moved through this area. They previously tried on the other side, all the way back, from the other side of the encampment, but the speaking to people who had contact inside the encampment, they seem to suggest that there has been some kind of resistance. Police had retreated and what you can continue to see going on right now in the area is flashbacks, which we have been hearing, as you can see, being fired, in the direction of the encampment. You can perhaps see those umbrellas, gazebos, just lifting with the commotion, as Police Continue to go in. And as they go about making what appears to be arrests. In the time that i have been here, directly witnessing this operation, i have seen them going off in numbers of at least tens, 20, 30 people who have been apprehended with zip ties behind their back, which you can see going on right now, close to that tree, and, of course, we are now, is the heart of the university. What youll be able to see over in this direction is the library, also reportedly was barricaded by protesters as well. As such, you can see those flash bangs going off into that area, seemingly trying to disperse people from that area as well. Trying to disperse people from that area as well trying to disperse people from that area as well. , ~ , area as well. Helena, thank you very much for that. Area as well. Helena, thank you very much for that. Just stay there, we i much for that. Just stay there, we will come straight back to you in 20 seconds or so. You were just outlining the geography of what we could see from your position but we just want to try and put in perspective. This is another angle, the same incident. You can see University Campus building just behind there. The flash bangs are just slightly quieter, but they are being picked up louder on helenas microphone. Helena, lets come back to you. Thank you for standing by. We just wanted to give you a sense of the scale, different angles of what is going on here. Is there any sense that you can clean of the police tactics, what are they that make how are they trying to achieve this . figs make how are they trying to achieve this . ~ , make how are they trying to achieve this . ,. , ~. , this . As we talk right now, trying to get a little bit closer, now that the initial hole has been made in the initial hole has been made in the perimeter. We can see people coming out, trying to get closer to see what is happening. What you can see what is happening. What you can see here is people who have been apprehended, they have zip ties behind their back and they have been searched. One woman came out saying, i do not consent to this search. That is going on right now. Exactly what is happening in terms of inside that encampment, you know, it is not entirely clear. You can see an entirely clear. You can see an entire gazebo being cast aside. Police at one point had essentially been Dragging Barricades and simply tossing it to one side, in an effort tossing it to one side, in an effort to try and get out. In terms of police tactics. Those flash bangs, they continue, but finally, i can say, we are starting to get a clearer picture now of the sheer number of officers who are inside. What i can see right now, is a sea of helmets, as police appeared to be holding the line and dealing with potentially what might be some kind of scuffles within the walls of that perimeter, and obviously it is difficult to tell right now. Now and again, we have seen flares of smoke coming out from this direction. I was caught up in it earlier. It did not appear to be a tear gas, it was more kind of Distraction Canisters which had gone off, probably from the side, i think of the protesters. We will get more accounts of exactly what happened in there, later. And just taking a look at the pictures now, as we can see, all of those right police in there, essentially trying to hold firm, by the looks of it, in some areas. It, in some areas. Helena, as you were talking it, in some areas. Helena, as you were talking there, it, in some areas. Helena, as you were talking there, we it, in some areas. That was one of the indications that we had that arrests would be happening, potentially we will see people taking off campuses, but right now, in terms of that search, you can see it being taken place, looking through some pounds backpack, people either remaining on their knees, or seated on the ground. They have zip tied around their wrists, as these searches continue. That tied around their wrists, as these searches continue. Tied around their wrists, as these searches continue. They are the two live feeds that we have, and we can still hear the flash bangs goi
