in berlin halted production. higher interest rates, which put up borrowing costs, are also taking a toll and it has an ageing line up of vehicles. but it is the chinese market that investors are most worried about. dan ives from wedbush securities blamed rising ev competition and a lingering price war for the challenges that the company faces in that market. the gloomy outlook, well, it's driven tesla's stock down roughly 30% since the start of this year. still one bright spot — it looks poised to retake the title of largest ev maker in the world from chinese rival byd, which on monday said it had sold around 300,000 evs during the quarter. shares of donald trump's social media company plunged 21% on monday. the drop wiped out the gains from its debut last week. it comes after the company disclosed it recorded 58 million dollars in losses last year and admitted it would struggle to meet its financial liabilities going forward. let's turn to china now because later this morning, shares of the chinese property giant country garden will be suspended from trading in hong kong. it comes after the company pushed back publishing its annual results. the firm told the hong kong stock exchange that it needed more time to collect information and make judgements. so how did one of china's biggest companies get into this mess? our business reporter katie silver takes a look. country garden has found itself at the heart of china's property crisis. the sector accounts for about a quarter of the country's economy, and it was once considered a darling of the government. it was a major source of growth, generated jobs, spurring china's development. but built increasingly on debt. beijing spied a problem and introduced measures in 2021 to curb the amount that big real estate companies could borrow. the problem was these measures may have been a little too effective. the move rattled the sector, hitting suppliers and construction companies. and it's caused the sale of properties which were the way to invest for china's middle class to tumble. country garden has been the biggest casualty. until last year, it was china's largest property developer by sales, with more than 3000 projects across the country. but it also has around $200 billion in debt and has been unable to repay some of its loans. last october it defaulted on off shore bonds, and this is contributing to a total lack of confidence. in february, for example, its sales dropped 85%, the biggest monthly drop in at least seven years. with all of this, it's facing calls to wind up. one company filed a petition in hong kong's court in february to ask the firm to liquidate. it's not expected to pass, but the same court did order country garden's smaller, more indebted rival evergrande to liquidate earlier this year. and it raises questions if there's any way that any of these companies can restructure their debt. country garden has reportedly hired financial advisers in new york to carry out a liquidation analysis, and it's called on creditors to be patient, saying china's property industry is volatile. country garden and evergrande are just two recent examples of china's property developers in crisis. last week, some of china's largest banks reported their latest earnings, which showed an increase in bad loans to the property sector. dan wang — she is the chief economist at hang seng bank china. it at hang seng bank china. is still in the process of going it is still in the process of going down to the terms of construction and sales. looking at recent data it is clear that there are way more houses being completed rather than being sold than the situation has pushed more potential consumers to be more conservative, it looks like the liquidity in the real estate sector is still drying up. and the government lacks intentioned to bail out those largest property developers and there are some projects and government initiatives to bailout a set of projects. in the long—term, to wife and three years, we will still see the downturn further. chinese banks have reported an increase in bad loans in the sector, that must be concerning.- sector, that must be concerning. sector, that must be concerninu. ., ., ., concerning. there are more than 4000 banks _ concerning. there are more than 4000 banks in — concerning. there are more than 4000 banks in china, _ concerning. there are more than 4000 banks in china, 9596 -
