his office says that mr netanyahu's deputy, yariv levin will serve as acting prime minister during this time. he's due to give a press conference shortly. this comes a hamas offical says israel and hamas "too far apart" for talks to progress. discussions over a possible new gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal are expected to resume in cairo, according to egyptian media. israel is sending a delegation of security and intelligence officials to the indirect talks. meanwhile, a freelance journalist working for bbc news is among seven media workers injured after the israeli military carried out an air strike inside a hospital compound in central gaza. this is the moment it happened. the israeli military says it carried out the air strike on an islamichhad command centre in the courtyard of al—aqsa hospital in deir al—balah. the journalists were among hundreds who are sheltering in makeshift tents in the grounds of the hospital. at least four people were killed and others injured. israel accuses hamas militants and the islamichhad group of hiding inside medical centres, but they deny this. palestinian health officials said nine more people died in an israeli strike in bani suhaila near the city of khan younis. james elder is a spokesperson for the charity unicef. he spoke to us from inside gaza about the situation there. it's desperate everywhere. it's forced desperation. i'm literally nowjust coming out of a hospital where we're trying to put together another icu for babies and children. and this is post—ceasefire. every day i go into that hospital and i see new children with the wounds of war, and i see some beds where a different child is there from the day before because the previous day's child has died. in the north it is, as you go along streets and you've got tens of thousands of people, they are cut off from everything. so that universal symbol of hand—to—mouth, just showing the level of hunger which you can also see in their faces. and then to hospitals where it's paper thin babies, there's desperation. they are the families that have managed somehow, despite the war, to get their children there. and they, too, arejust literally hanging on. there's a particular desperation, of course, in the north, based on the sheer lack of essentials, mostly food, that all aid agencies have been able to get there. and we have seen in the last few days some more of those airdrops and also another ship setting off from cyprus to bring in supplies that way. will those make any difference? i think all aid makes a difference, but we need to just put it in the sense of tonnage. it's so critical. those people in the north need, as the secretary general of the united nations has said, lauren, they need to be flooded with aid. now, the last ship that came in had the equivalent of 12 trucks on it. one of the emergency drops from a helicopter might be equivalent of one truck. where i am in the south, where i've just come from the border, there are hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of trucks desperate to get in. so roads remain the fastest, the most efficient, the safest way to get aid into those people who are facing imminent famine. and it's notjust the network here in the south. there are crossings in the north that need to be opened. this would be a game changer. open those in the north, flood that area with much—needed food, and we can reverse this imminent famine literally in a matter of weeks. but that's not happening, or not being allowed to happen. yeah, i mean, israel has said repeatedly, that it's denied that it's hampering the aid deliveries. but from what you're saying, 100 trucks are waiting to cross. what's your assessment of why it's so slow? well, it's a lack of aid access, a great deal of detail in terms of every truck going through multiple security checks. for example, a unicef truck with the most basic, you know, life—saving nutrition supplies or buckets or blankets, will be loaded and unloaded on trucks four different times from our warehouse by the time it actually gets to people in need. i think, of all the conversations, but it's an important one on this aid, because it does result in people either dying or not dying of starvation. the key thing is... we are getting 70% less to the north than six months ago before this this war. 70% less trucks are able to come in. that's a huge number. that speaks to why the world's most respected body talks of an imminent famine. and the other one is, these two crossing points in the south need to be matched by those crossing points, which are literally 10 minutes from those people who put their hand to the mouth, their mouth, pleading for food. and you've talked also about rafah. give us an idea of what it's like in terms of the humanitarian situation and the access, or lack of it, really, to to facilities. rafah is a heartbreak. it's a city of children. it was a city of 300,000 people. now it's got 600,000 children. everywhere you look is another family who lived in a villa or a chalet or a three—bedroom apartment, and that home has been turned to rubble. i can't tell you how many parents, 60— and 70—year—olds, or grandparents have said, "i have no time left, james. "i put my life into that place." so there's a lot of trauma here. and this apparently is where the next offensive will come. so you've got children who are dealing with psychological issues, i think we're in uncharted territory here. a massive deprivation. it's around one toilet per... i'm sorry. i beg your pardon. yeah. 0ne toilet for 800 people. multiply that by four for a shower, 3,500 people for a single shower. imagine what that's doing to adolescent girls. so there's a denial of food. there's a denial of safety. bombardments are relentless here, and there's a denial of dignity. let's those talks, and the key thing will be in the next hour or so, even in the next few days, is whether there is a significant change occurring in those talks, and that hamas are invited to come to cairo to make their point and see that the sides can come to some kind of arrangement that sees not only a ceasefire but the release of the 130 captives inside gaza. to windsor, where king charles and queen camilla have attended the easter sunday service at st george's chapel. here they are leaving the chapel earlier — much to the delight of crowds who had lined up to see them. this is the king's most significant public appearance since being diagnosed with cancer. he wasn't expected to mingle but he did — greeting wellwishers and thanking them for waiting out in the cold. the prince and princess of wales did not attend, as catherine is receiving cancer treatment. the king has continued some work since his diagnosis, but all engagements so far have taken place in private. so this attendance at the easter morning church service at st george's chapel will be seen as an encouraging sign about his health. charlotte gallagher sent this report. the king and queen arriving at the easter sunday service, a wave for the crowd at windsor castle. this is an annual tradition but this hasn't been a normal year at all with both the king of the princess of wales being treated for cancer. today is the king's first significant public appearance since he announced his diagnosis in february. and he surprised well—wishers by greeting people outside the chapel. so glad you have been so patriotic. best wishes for the princess of wales. you are very brave to stand out here in the cold. this is a best wishes card. the prince and princess of wales were not at the church service. they are spending the easter holidays with their children in private. this was the last time they were all seen together in public, christmas day at sandringham. it is unlikely catherine will resume public duties in the near future. her treatment and recovery are the priorities. the king and queen spent around ten minutes chatting and shaking hands with people outside the chapel. a lovely service. happy easter, i hope you are doing well. many had travelled to windsor especially to see the royals. you are very strong, keep going. the king is not returning to full public duties yet but today is a positive sign about his health and recovery. the pope also delivered his traditional easter mass in the vatican — where he renewed his call for a ceasefire in gaza and the release of hostages being held there. here's our religion editor aleem maqbool. when pope francis pulled out of some easter events, concerns about his health intensified. but the vatican said it was to conserve energy for today. and that seems to have worked. though a little out of breath, easter mass went smoothly. after which the 87—year—old went on a drive about to greet what police estimated to be around 60,000 people who had come to st peter's square. events culminated with the pope's blessing and easter message. in it he talked of what he called the absurdity of war and focused on the children of gaza. translation: all my suffering we see in the eyes of these children, - they have forgotten how to smile, the children in the area of war have forgotten how to smile. with those eyes they ask us, why? why all this death? why all this destruction? war is always an absurdity. celebrations in the holy land this year, including at the church of the holy sepulchre at the site where christians believe jesus was crucified, buried and rose from the dead, was scaled down. palestinian christians talked about an easter tinged with sadness and many foreign pilgrims stayed away. at canterbury cathedral, archbishop justin welby also talked of international conflicts but also of struggles closer to home. we must confront evil and pain, whether it is the evil of people smugglers or county lines in our schools, or the pain and suffering in a family riven with grief or rage or substance abuse. but whether home or abroad, he talked of the hope of the easter story in bringing light to darkness. aleem maqbool, bbc are calling for the release of the delhi chief minister. he was taken into custody ten days ago on corruption charges, which he denies. major leaders are addressing this rally, saying that india's democracy and constitution should be saved, and that is the motive of this major rally here. the congress party says its bank accounts have been frozen and they have been asked to pay more than $200 million in fines for allegedly violating tax rules. but the government denies any political motive behind this action, saying the law will take its own course. india's elections are due to start on 19th april and will be held in several places. the campaign is going across the country for this mammoth exercise, but what the opposition is saying is that there is no level playing field. for example, they accuse the election commission of being biased towards the governing bjp and they said that investigating agencies are being used to cripple them, to stifle dissent, to prevent them from campaigning. however, the governing bjp denies these charges and the mammoth exercise of india's general election, in which the prime minister is seeking a third straight term is starting on the 19th of april. romania and bulgaria have become the newest members of the europe's schengen area of free movement — but only for air and sea crossings. land border controls will remain in place because of israel on that shortly. the deputy prime minister and justice minister will serve as acting premier stowe while the prime minister is sedated. stay with us here on bbc news. hello there. well, this easter weekend, the amount of sunshine we had across the uk varied quite a bit. some of us didn't have any sunshine at all. if you look at the satellite picture, you can see the thicker cloud across parts of england and wales and the brighter skies earlier on across scotland and northern ireland, all part of a much larger rugged area of cloud shrouding many parts of europe. it's a big area of low pressure that's dominating the continent right now. and in the next few days, we are expecting a fair amount of rain. smaller areas of low pressure will come sweeping our way. and with that, outbreaks of rain and at times some strong winds. but it won't be raining all the time. there will be some fair weather in between these weather systems. so the forecast then through the early hours, we have some rain across the south of the uk, maybe some cracks of thunder. also, this easterly breeze drags in rain bearing cloud into parts of northern england. so quite wet in yorkshire overnight. the temperatures early on monday, five in aberdeen, about seven or eight in the south. so no huge contrasts across the uk. so easter monday itself then. well, rain at times, that's the headline. but there'll be some sunshine too. i think the thickest of the cloud with the most persistent outbreaks of rain will be across northern england, perhaps around the northwest here, merseyside, the irish sea into eastern areas of northern ireland. either side of that, dry and brighter, i say drier. there will be showers breaking out across southern england. some of them could be thundery sunshine in between too. the forecast for tuesday shows that weather front moving northwards, kind of fizzling away, but still damp here. and then the next weather system sweeps into south western areas of the uk and then later in the day that rain will track northwards and eastwards across the uk. and here it is on wednesday in its wake. showers are expected across the bulk of england and wales and that easterly breeze there in the north of scotland keeping things fairly chilly for our friends in stornoway. only seven degrees even colder than that in lerwick, about seven in aberdeen, but in the south around 15 degrees. and in fact the south—southwesterly winds will be quite persistent across the bulk of england and wales. so the temperatures will be never that low. but of course often rain clouds in the north always a little bit cooler. that's it for me. bye bye. live from london, this is bbc news. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu will temporarily hand over power as he requires pleads for peace in his easter message. he's been meeting worshippers after easter sunday mass as thousands gather in st peter's square. polls have closed in turkey, where president erdogan is hoping his party can regain control of key urban areas. we begin in the middle east, where israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu will undergo surgery on sunday for a hernia his doctors discovered during a routine examination. mr netanyahu will be fully sedated during the procedure — his office says that mr netanyahu's deputy, yariv levin will serve as acting prime minister during this time. he's due to give a press conference shortly. now to turkey, where voting in local elections has officially ended in the last hour. millions of people have been going to the polls, which could see president erdogan's party retaking control of key cities it lost in the last vote five years ago. most eagerly watched is the outcome in istanbul, which is home to nearly a fifth of the population. the current mayor there — ekrem imamoglu — is seen as mr erdogan's biggest challenger in decades. if he wins today, it would boost his standing as a potential rival to president erdogan in 2028. the elections are taking place against a backdrop of severe economic problems, including inflation of nearly 70%. earlier, i spoke to emre temel from bbc turkish. losing istanbal was the biggest political defeat of his career. when president erdogan won the presidential election last year, he immediately declared that taking istanbul back would be his primary target. 0bviously, conditions are changed in turkish politics, last year it was split but ekrem imamoglu is a very popular politician and he seems to be the most serious challenger that president erdogan has faced. how does it work, do we have indication of turnout or exit polls or something like that? the polls closed an hour ago. we still don't know anything at this stage. we can't say anything at this stage however we hope to hear initial results within the next couple of hours. if ekrem imamoglu were to win, does that propel him onto the national stage to become a future leader? is that why people are concerned or interested in this particular election? yes, what happens in istanbul will have a significant effect on the future of turkish politics. that is why this race can easily be seen for a battleground for the next presidential elections. ekrem imamoglu won the election not once but twice. and if he wins today if he is beaten him three times then he can be the one who will challenge him for the next presidential election in 2028. in terms of the state of turkey's economy, how is that going at the moment? the official inflation is almost 70%. but some independent experts are putting this annual inflation figure at well over 100%, this is the biggest concern for president erdogan's party. president erdogan's party lost other big cities five years ago alongside istanbul. they want to take control back of these cities. but the economic concerns are very serious issues. even some governing party officials saw the fury of people because of the economic problems. what about security? has that been a concern for voters in this election? we haven't heard anything significant yet and turkey's supreme election officials have not made any statements. voting was peaceful in general. we haven't had anything significant. carnauba wax is a product you may not have heard of, but you have almost certainly consumed it — it's added to sweets to stop them melting, to pills to make them easier to swallow and as a thickener in lipstick and mascara. harvesting the wax from palm trees in brazil is an industry in which, according to brazilian authorities, companies are failing to improve working conditions. last year, more than 3,000 workers across all industries were rescued from situations including forced labour and degrading work conditions, which is at a 14—year high. in brazilian law, this can amount to slavery—like conditions. the bbc was given exclusive access to a raid with the federal police on a carnauba wax plantation. katy watson has this report from the state of piaui in shaik consumer, the mother of the others, and i'm still awaiting a response. we have listened to the firms, we have heard their voices, listened to the firms, we have heard theirvoices, i listened to the firms, we have heard their voices, i embraced them. i understand that agony and the fact that they want to do anything possible to get their families back, and i'm taking part in that desire. but as a prime minister of israel, i will do anything in my power to bring our beloveds home. the efforts ijy bring our beloveds home. the efforts by us to get to such is pack are continuing all the time, at any moment and whenever we get the intelligence that is allowing us to try and get them back, br endangering your powerful zero idf fighters in order to do that, and we have had some success. but this is a combination of a negotiation and military forces, command that has already allowed double forces, together with our efforts, to get back almost half of the hostages, together with negotiation team, working around the clock in order to bring back from oliver hostages, and i do it while i balance between the pressure on hamas that is demanded and whatever flexibility that is possible for the investigation. anything saying i'm not doing everything in my power to get the hostages back, is wrong, and is getting a wrong opinion. anyone saying that is giving unnecessary to the hostages. and paradoxically was giving more flexible stances during the negotiation committee hamas who is becoming less flexible. they demanded become so the corridor for gaza citizens to go back to the north, together with hamas. those demands by hamas, they have ramifications, military ramification. i will not talk about them at night. without this difficulty, we need to conduct a negotiation coolly and in an educated manager, which is the only way to get all of the hostages back. they claim that if every day we we will submit to another demand thus is not the way to get them back. this will not bring us closer to bringing them home, but in fact it will push their coming back further from us. we don't need to show that we are giving effort, but be need to just get them back. practically get them back on. and i want to see one more thing. the people calling for elections now come as a war is ongoing, a moment before achieving great city, will paralyse israel for at least six months, and i assume that even eight months, the negotiation will be the war... the war will have to enter for a accomplishing this is position. it is my commitment to bring back, the hostages, men and women alike. citizens and idf soldiers alike come alive and dead alike. i will not leave anyone behind. god willing, we will be able to do that. together, we shall fight. we shall win. any ramifications here that are very important, —— military ramifications. it is a question asked by myself and the chief of staff and the minister of defence, and i will not now elaborate regarding every one of our consideration because i don't want to give hamas all of this information. we want to secede and that negotiation, to look as if we are putting effort, but rather to succeed. this is what we get back... this is how we got half of the hostages back and this is how i hope to get the rest of them back. we need to conduct an educated negotiation are notjust to submit to any kind of demand. and thus as demonstrators on the streets are calling for a new election. she said, elections were to paralyse it israel. to stay with us on bbc news. —— elections would paralyse israel. hello there. well, this easter weekend, the amount of sunshine we had across the uk varied quite a bit. some of us didn't have any sunshine at all. if you look at the satellite picture, you can see the thicker cloud across parts of england and wales and the brighter skies earlier on across scotland and northern ireland, all part of a much larger rugged area of cloud shrouding many parts of europe. it's a big area of low pressure that's dominating the continent right now. and in the next few days, we are expecting a fair amount of rain. smaller areas of low pressure will come sweeping our way. and with that, outbreaks of rain and at times some strong winds. but it won't be raining all the time. there will be some fair weather in between these weather systems. so the forecast then — through the early hours, we have some rain across the south of the uk, maybe some cracks of thunder. also, this easterly breeze drags in rain bearing cloud into parts of northern england. so quite wet in yorkshire overnight. the temperatures early on monday, 5 in aberdeen, about 7 or 8 in the south. so no huge contrasts across the uk. so easter monday itself then. well, rain at times, that's the headline. but there'll be some sunshine too. i think the thickest of the cloud with the most persistent outbreaks of rain will be across northern england, perhaps around the northwest here, merseyside, the irish sea into eastern areas of northern ireland. either side of that, drier and brighter — i say drier, there will be showers breaking out across southern england. some of them could be thundery, but sunshine in between too. the forecast for tuesday shows that weather front moving northwards, kind of fizzling away, but still damp here. and then the next weather system sweeps into southwestern areas of the uk and then later in the day that rain will track northwards and eastwards across the uk. and here it is on wednesday. in its wake, showers are expected across the bulk of england and wales, and that easterly breeze there in the north of scotland keeping things fairly chilly. for our friends in stornoway, only 7 degrees — even colder than that in lerwick, about 7 in aberdeen, but in the south around 15 degrees. and in fact the south—southwesterly winds will be quite persistent across the bulk of england and wales. so the temperatures will be never that low. but of course often rain clouds in the north, bye bye. live from london. this is bbc news. israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, will temporarily hand over power as he requires surgery under general anaesthestic. i promise you that this operation that i'm undergoing tonight i will also go through very quickly and i will be back to my duties as fast as possible. a group ofjournalists are among the casualties of an israeli air strike close to a hospital in central gaza. the idf says it hit a command centre used by islamichhad fighters. king charles has attended an easter service in windsor — followed by a
