Hello, im matthew amroliwala. Welcome to verified live, three hours of breaking stories and checking out the truth behind them. More details are emerging of an explosion at a Un Relief Agency warehouse in rafah in southern gaza. At least five people were killed, with more wounded. This includes unrwa staff member. These pictures have been verified by the bbc filmed at a nearby hospital, where casualties were taken. Israel has not yet commented on the incident. The us and others continue to urge israel not to launch a full scale assault on rafah, where more than a million palestinians have taken shelter in recent weeks. Let me show you pictures of the warehouse itself that were talking about, these taken in the immediate aftermath. This, the scene inside. Some of the images are too graphic to broadcast. Unrwas Director Of Communications isjuliette touma. She told me the location of the warehouse had been shared with israeli authorities. Its yet another very sad day for unrwa. What we do know is that the Israeli Forces have hit one of our largest warehouses in southern gaza. And its also used as a Food Distribution centre. Its in the eastern side of rafah, in the very south of the gaza strip. This is also the site where more than 1. 5 Million People are currently living. Many of them have been displaced several times due to the war. This is a Distribution Centre for food and also a warehouse where we store food supplies, but also other critical supplies. We know that it is the Israeli Forces who were responsible. It happened this morning. Our teams were on site, and they reported back their casualties. It comes at a critical time, as hunger spreads across the gaza strip and as famine looms in some parts of gaza, including in the north. Just in terms of a factual question, do you as an Agency Supply the coordinates to the israelis exactly where each of these warehouses are in the gaza strip, in rafah . Yes, of course, matthew. Unrwa shares the coordinates every day with all to the conflict, including the israeli army. I havejust double checked before coming to speak to you the coordinates of this very warehouse were on the list, which was shared with the israeli army last night. That was juliet from unrwa talking to me a little earlier about what they knew of this incident on the ground in rafah. Joining us now on the line is ibrahim isbeyta, an eyewitness to the casualties being brought in to al najjar hospital. Thank you forjoining us here today on the programme. I wonder if you could just ascribe to us what it was like there at the hospital. First could just ascribe to us what it was like there at the hospital. Like there at the hospital. First of all, thank like there at the hospital. First of all. Thank you like there at the hospital. First of all, thank you so like there at the hospital. First of all, thank you so much like there at the hospital. First of all, thank you so much for like there at the hospital. First ofj all, thank you so much for having me on. All, thank you so much for having me orr actually all, thank you so much for having me on. Actually we were surprised that the unrwa organisation, we knew that they are the unrwa organisation, we knew that they are not to be touched. The limit they are not to be touched. The limit received the news about there was a limit received the news about there was a target of a warehouse of unrwa, was a target of a warehouse of unrwa, we were surprised. And we think the unrwa, we were surprised. And we think the crab were outside the normai think the crab were outside the normal warehouse, think the crab were outside the normalwarehouse, but think the crab were outside the normal warehouse, but once people came, normal warehouse, but once people came, we normal warehouse, but once people came, we were surprised people were wearing came, we were surprised people were wearing vests of the un, coming as the wounded. We were shocked. There was no the wounded. We were shocked. There was no redline. That means one of the officials, one of the organisations distributing aid for more organisations distributing aid for more than 500 people. Apologies because the more than 500 people. Apologies because the line more than 500 people. Apologies because the line is more than 500 people. Apologies because the line is very more than 500 people. Apologies because the line is very poor. More than 500 people. Apologies because the line is very poor. I because the line is very poor. I will try another couple of questions and see how we go. Give me an idea of the number of casualties you actually saw. Of the number of casualties you actually saw of the number of casualties you actuall saw. ,. ,. , actually saw. Yeah, one of the five eo le actually saw. Yeah, one of the five peeple killed. Actually saw. Yeah, one of the five People Killed, more actually saw. Yeah, one of the five People Killed, more than actually saw. Yeah, one of the five People Killed, more than 100 actually saw. Yeah, one of the five People Killed, more than 100 were wounded People Killed, more than 100 were wounded because inside the warehouse there are wounded because inside the warehouse there are many people who were in line waiting there are many people who were in line waiting for aiden. One of the people line waiting for aiden. One of the people who got killed were working at the people who got killed were working at the distribution officer. So people at the distribution officer. So people are shocked at the beginning, we think. People are shocked at the beginning, we think, and people were witnessing, we think it was outside or Something Like that. But right now, or Something Like that. But right now. We or Something Like that. But right now, we see five People Killed and more than now, we see five People Killed and more than 100 wounded. Most of them were working for the un. So at this moment, were working for the un. So at this moment, we have no idea what is coming moment, we have no idea what is coming next. Unrwa, we are thinking about coming next. Unrwa, we are thinking about what coming next. Unrwa, we are thinking about what is coming next in our thinking about what is coming next in our thinking about another one of the official thinking about another one of the official organisations providing security official organisations providing security and aid, so we have to stop and think security and aid, so we have to stop and think about what we are going to do for and think about what we are going to do for getting more aid for people. So people do for getting more aid for people. So people are hurt and traumatised because so people are hurt and traumatised because they have no idea what is coming because they have no idea what is coming next. We because they have no idea what is coming next because they have no idea what is coming next. We are going to leave it there because coming next. We are going to leave it there because it coming next. We are going to leave it there because it is coming next. We are going to leave it there because it is a coming next. We are going to leave it there because it is a difficult it there because it is a difficult line, but we got the thrust of what you are saying so thank you so much forjoining us therefrom rafah. Thanks for your time. That is the latest in terms ofjust one eyewitness account. Of course the government of israel has not responded in terms of giving a response in a reaction to that incident was that we wait to hear anything that comes from the idf. Lets move onto another important story. Here, the Prime Minister has told the commons that comments allegedly made by Conservative Party donor frank hester were wrong and racist. Mr hester is reported to have said the mp diane abbott made him want to hate all black women and should be shot. At Prime Ministers questions, the labour leader, sir keir starmer, put pressure on rishi sunak over the issue. Take a listen. Is the Prime Minister proud to be bankrolled by someone using racist and misogynist language when he says the member for Hackney North and Stoke Newington makes you want to hate all black women . Mr speaker, the alleged comments were wrong. They were racist. And he is now. As i said, the comments were wrong, they were racist. He has rightly apologised for them. And that remorse. And that remorse should be accepted. Mr speaker, there is no place for racism in britain, and the government that i lead is living proof of that. Lets bring in our Political Correspondent rob watson. He was pressed several times, the Prime Minister, about what he give that money back. He said no and if that money back. He said no and if that one of his ministers on television earlier in the day say they potentially could take more money from mr hester. Yes. They potentially could take more money from mr hester. They potentially could take more money from mr hester. Yes, if it was a Rancorous Money from mr hester. Yes, if it was a rancorous session money from mr hester. The us says it expects a Transitional Council to be in place in the country within the next two days. The council will be tasked with nominating a new Prime Minister following the resignation on monday of ariel henry. The un says it strongly hopes the agreement will help end the violence carried out by the gangs that control much of the capital. Gang leaders had demanded that the Prime Minister step down. Lets get the latest from our Central America correspondent will grant. Hes on the haitian border. What are you hearing in the interim, since we had that resignation, as it helped at all with quelling the sort of mayhem we have been seeing on the streets of the capital . I of mayhem we have been seeing on the streets of the capital . Streets of the capital . I think there was streets of the capital . I think there was a streets of the capital . I think there was a moment streets of the capital . I think there was a moment of streets of the capital . I think there was a moment of celebration in Port Au Prince when the announcement was made, but it did not last very long. And certainly what we are hearing from journalists we speak to very often in the capital is that things have gotten very, very bad again today. He was not able to move her the city with these two speak to people or gather information and find out how people are feeling. There was a plan anti ariel henry demonstration, a sort of celebration of the fact he is, that seems to have been stood down or cancelled because of the violence on the streets. 50 it remains an extremely tense situation, a violent situation and in the security concerns, there are the serious material ones. People struggling to find enough of to people unable to give out to work or make any money or make ends meet. And of course we had those regional leaders, the Secretary Of State joined them injamaica, in terms of any sort of plan, what if the plan to try to improve situation . The idea is to create to try to improve situation . The idea is to create a to try to improve situation . Tue idea is to create a Transitional Council, a sort of new government that would at least allow things to sort of stabilise enough so that there is some form of Executive Power in place. As it stands, although ariel henry stood down, he does not stand out until that new government is in place, so he extensively is still in power. But of course he is out of the country in puerto rico and there is no real chance of him returning. The gangs who control more than 80 of the capital Port Au Prince, their consideration is important because they may simply not be happy enough with the makeup of this council, this Transitional Council, if they feel that their requirements are not being met. That might involve amnesty over the violence or some thing like that and might even want a seat at the table, and necessarily for a given for themselves but obviously a huge stretch of the imagination with somebody who is it without it there because or would represent them in negotiations. So it is still very difficult and i would just move next and with violence involved, i meant to be prepared to put down their guns until they get what they want. find until they get what they want. And eve final until they get what they want. And every final thought. In terms of the famine like conditions that we are being warned about their on the ground, have they got any sort of idea of how they actually get a into streets that are so dangerous . Thats the thing is that the eight agencies themselves have not really started, i dont think emma to get that eight it was that they not been able to. There was a promise of 20 million more dollars aid coming from the European Union but it is not figured out yet, so it is initially difficult situation. One in which the Us State Department is sort of taking the lead in conjunction with other nations in the area, but that will make people who hold the guns in Port Au Prince necessarily very happy. In portauprince necessarily very ha. ~ in portauprince necessarily very ha. ,. , happy. Will grant their on the border of happy. Will grant their on the border of haiti. Happy. In a despairing letter to parents, jason ashley, head of Redbridge Community school in southampton, said meals served in its canteen were completely unacceptable and asked, how difficult is it to bake a potato . Youre live with bbc news. Lithuania has blamed russia for attacking a close aide of the late russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny. The countrys president called it a pre planned assault. This is Leonid Volkov, a long time ally of navalny. He was assaulted while in his car in the Lithuanian Capital Vilnius on tuesday night. He was left with a broken arm and covered in blood, but mr volkov is not deterred. He released this Video Message blaming putin and urging people to carry on opposing him. Translation thank you very much for your words of support. Its a bit tough, but never mind. Well get over it. I was pleased to read what you had written to me. Even more so because while i was reading, i knew i was still alive. They wanted to make me into a schnitzel with a meat hammer right outside my house, in the yard. The attacker hit me 15 times in my leg. Surprisingly, the leg is still in one piece. It is difficult to walk, but apparently the leg is not broken. My arm has been broken instead. Oh, well, ill live. The most important thing is we will continue working and we will not surrender. I am not ready to make any comments except for this. It was another obvious, typical, classic gangster hello from putin, from the gangster petersburg. Vladimir vladimirovich, hello to you, too. What else can i say . Continue working against putin. Thats what needs to be done. Lets go on. I spoke to bill browder, a leading campaigner in the push to expose russian corruption and human rights abuses. I asked him whether he agreed with Leonid Volkov that this was a typical gangster greeting from Vladimir Putin. Absolutely, no question. So, a couple of weeks ago, putin killed Alexei Navalny. There have been almost no serious consequences, and so putin is now flexing his muscles outside the country. And this is what putin does. He doesntjust target one person, he targets everyone around them. And this Volkov Attack is clearly the result of some type of russian operation ordered by Vladimir Putin and those around him. And is the broader worry that a it shows putins a it shows putins reach and is the broader worry that a it shows putins reach and b it also shows he is acting with total impunity if this is him . The Impunity Problem is really very serious. We all knew when he killed Alexei Navalny that was a huge red line. Alexei navalny is a major Opposition Politician, and by killing him, putin basically told the world he could kill the most important and popular Opposition Politician and nothing would happen. And effectively nothing has happened. Wave sanctioned a fewjail officials from the prison where navalny was kept, but. And now hes empowered, Putin Is Empowered to go around outside of russia and attack his enemies. And volkov is one of his enemies, and there are many other enemies. And i would imagine that other people will be attacked in the future as well who are enemies. Well, i was going to come on to exactly that. Navalny s team was pretty large. Presumably all of those people will be pretty alarmed by what theyve seen playing out. They will be, and they should be. And the basic message putin wants to send to everybody is that youre not safe anywhere in the world. But for everyone. And this message is notjust for Alexei Navalnys colleagues, but for everyone. He wants people to be scared, he wants politicians to be scared, he wants activists to be scared, russians elsewhere to be scared. And in that sense, is that working . Absolutely, it works very perfectly. So he sends these messages, very symbolic messages, its a mafia style thing. You dont have to kill everybody or attack everybody, just a few highly symbolic people, and everybody gets the message, and the message has been generated loud and clear, thats what he wants to tell everybody. And until we stand up to him and punish him for doing these things, hell carry on. Bill brought her talking to me just a few moments ago. Now, one more story and a wonderful story it is. Giant redwoods, the largest trees on the planet, are thriving in the uk. Thats the conclusion of a new survey published in the royal societyjournal open science. The trees arent quite as big as those found in california, but theyre becoming a key part of britains landscape. Our science editor Rebecca Morelle has been to see some of the giants. Theyre becoming a standout feature of our forests. Giant redwoods are the biggest trees on the planet. These native californian wonders are fast growing and can lock up vast amounts of carbon. And now theyre looming large across the landscape in the uk. Well, these Giant Redwoods really live up to their name. They are suitably huge. So here are a couple of questions. How many of these trees do you think there are in their native californian region . Well, the answer is only about 80,000. And how many Giant Redwoods do you think there are here in the uk . Well, you might be surprised to learn that theres an estimated 500,000, and that number is growing. These Giant Redwoods were planted in wakehurst in sussex about 150 years ago, and it turns out that the damp british weather is good for them. So where they grow in california is cooler and moister than you would typically envisage california, and we have a reasonably similar climate here. Its very wet. They need the moisture to grow. The estimate of how many there are seems to be an awful lot. As we start looking for them in the landscape you see how many they really are. So heres the next question. How high do you think these trees can grow . Well, the answer is up to 90 metres tall, but this ones not quite there yet. For their study, scientists have been using lasers to measure the trees. This means they can accurately measure them. This ones 46 metres tall. They can also calculate the trees weight and see how much carbon is being soaked up. These trees are about 30 times. They have about 10 to 15 tonnes of carbon stored in their tissues. Compared to the largest tree in california, which has about 250 tonnes of carbon stored in it, theyre quite small, but you know, these could get as big. Havering country park in essex is one of the sites being surveyed. It has an avenue of Giant Redwoods once provided a Grand Entrance for a stately home thats no longer here. These trees were once the ultimate status symbol. I see them all over the place, and they pop up in the kind of most weird and wonderful places. I think partly they have this sort of iconic status because they are the biggest organisms on earth and theyre some of the oldest organisms on earth. We kind of hold them in that regard of exotic we kind of hold them in that regard of exotic species. Final question, how long do you think these trees can live . Well, the answer to that is a very long time. More than 2000 years. In california, Ancient Redwood Forests show how colossal these trees can get. They are under threat in their home due to Climate Change but in the uk they seem to be flourishing. In but in the uk they seem to be flourishing but in the uk they seem to be flourishinu. ,. ,. Even in the fog, the uks Giant Redwoods are hard to miss, but we still need to find out how well theyll fit into our forests and to see just how big theyll grow. Rebecca morelle, bbc news. They are incredibly beautiful but also incredible stories of carbon dioxide. Back with more headlines here in a moment or two. Hello, Thanks Forjoining me. Its been quite a cloudy day across most of the uk today, some rain too, but its been mild. And if anything, the temperatures are expected to rise a little further as we head into thursday quite breezy too, particularly in scotland. Weve had some gales here. Anyway, heres the satellite picture, and you can see the Rain Bearing Cloud Streaming across the uk. That cloud produced the heavier rain around snowdonia, the north west of england. And through the course of the evening, the Weather Front will be moving northwards. So where we had the clearer skies in the north, well, its going to turn cloudy through the night. The outbreaks of rain will reach Northern Ireland, parts of southern scotland, too. But to the north, it will stay clear and chilly. So northern scotland, only around five degrees underneath the clear skies. Further south, its closer to about 8 10 celsius, and of course, weve got that rain, too. So lets have a look at the forecast for thursday mild south westerlies, that rain continues to make its journey northward, so quite a soggy picture here in scotland. Out towards the west, weve got showers, and given some lengthy spells of sunshine, which are just about possible across eastern england, east anglia and the south east, well, temperatures here could reach 16 or even 17 degrees celsius. And then through tomorrow evening, its a case of hit and miss showers across england and wales, but more wet and more, i think, substantial rain there for Northern Ireland and also scotland. That takes us into friday. As this low pressure pulls away towards the east, on its western flank here, we have winds coming in from the norwegian sea. So its slightly colder air. If you look at the arrows, blowing in from the north, so that cooler air sliding across the uk, the temperatures will take a bit of a dip. Single figures, i think, typically for for scotland, for the north of england, but still relatively mild in east anglia 14. And i think therell be some showers around too, but also some decent spells of sunshine. And then friday night into saturday, its going to be pretty cold. A frost will develop, and i suspect in some spots out of town, temperatures could be as low as it celsius early on saturday morning. Thats not going to last very long. That sun is strong now this time of the year. Heres the outlook, then from thursday onwards its a bit of a mixed bag. Rain at times, a bit of sunshine, but actually staying relatively mild for most of us. Bye bye. This is bbc news.
