hello and welcome, i'm samantha simmonds. the royal family are facing more questions over a picture of the princess of wales first published on sunday. this picture, released for mother's day, showing catherine with their three children, has since been retracted by four photo agencies over concerns it has been "manipulated". it is the first official photo of the princess of wales since her abdominal surgery two months ago. simon jones has more. released at 9:00 yesterday morning by kensington palace to mark mother's day — a picture of the princess of wales surrounded by her children. the aim was to dampen speculation about catherine's recovery from her recent abdominal surgery. but some people pointed out that the image looked odd — a view shared by several leading picture agencies which had initially sent out the photo worldwide. one of them said there was an inconsistency in the alignment of princess charlotte's left hand, meaning the image didn't reach the agency's standards. late last night, the associated press issued something called a kill notification — an industry term for a retraction. the reason it gave for killing the story is that on closer inspection it appears that the source has manipulated the image. no replacement photo will be sent. it says, "please remove it from all platforms, including social, where it may still be visible." another agency, reuters, advised its customers, "please remove this image from your systems." that was following what it called a post—publication review. afp and getty also withdrew the picture. other commentators online said prince louis' hands didn't look right and even that the tree in the background had too many leaves for this time of year. the last time catherine was officially seen in public was on christmas day. thank you so much. that's very sweet of you to come and say hello to us. yeah, a very happy christmas. weeks later, she was in hospital having abdominal surgery — though kensington palace made it clear it wouldn't give a running commentary on her condition or recovery. after a period of caring for his wife, prince william has resumed royal duties — but against the backdrop of concern for catherine. and this is a depleted royalfamily. king charles has still been pictured carrying out engagements, but fewer than normal due to his cancer diagnosis. and now this photo — designed to cool the conversation around the princess' recovery — seems to have had the opposite effect. kensington palace has so far declined to comment. speaking from outside windsor castle, simonjones told us this latest incident has put pressure on the royal family. i think it's fair to say it's been a difficult time for the royal family with king charles's cancer diagnosis, with catherine being out of action. it's meant that prince william is having to step up. other members of the royal family are having to do more and are very much in the public spotlight, as they will be during the course of this afternoon. but it comes back to that issue of trust between the public and the royal family. and at the moment, many people in the public are saying they do want to know what happened. want to know what happened, if anything, with this picture. it's possible that the picture might have been passed from prince william, who took it on to officials at kensington palace, people who run their social media profiles. and they took it upon themselves to do a bit of enhancement. but i think the pressure now is on kensington palace just to say exactly what did happen. robert timothy is an editor at the bbc and a photographer. good to see you. take is what you think as a photographer, what might have happened here? hi. photographer, what might have happened here?— if you look at the photo there are definite inconsistencies. for example, if you look at where princess charlotte's tartan skirt is it looks like it has been badly composited. if you have an issue like this, with an image like this in the fashion industry you will take multiple examples of the same image and in photoshop you layer them on top of each other and the photo editor will then take out this, take out that, take out this. what appears to have happened here is that either didn't happen or has happened rather badly. another explanation i have read is perhaps the photo was taken with one of these new whizzy mobile phones that composites the image itself, so these photos where it will take the best, if you point the camera at a bunch of people it will take five or six photos and then automatically composite them into one single image and that possibly could be an explanation for why this has happened. explanation for why this has happened-— explanation for why this has photoshop. agencies will have their ways of checking. one simple way to checkis ways of checking. one simple way to check is if you have a photo that looks like it has been edited or composited together, put it into photoshop and pull out the shadows because the shadows are where the editing things happen and if you pull the shadows up, and for example in this photograph from kensington palace, if you pull up the shadows you can see on the duchess's zip there is inconsistency. photo agencies will be really rigorous in checking, especially with photographs like wildlife photography. i don't mean to denigrate an entire sector of the community, but wildlife photography can be pretty wild when it comes to editing photos to make it look good. 0k, editing photos to make it look good. ok, robert, good to chat to you, thanks for being with us. now to the middle east. palestinians have begun marking ramadan the islamic month of fasting while fierce battles continue between israeli forces and hamas fighters in gaza. let's cross live now tojerusalem and join my colleague anna foster. samantha, thank you, good morning. welcome to damascus gate in the city walls here in eastjerusalem. people have begun marking the first day of ramadan. you can see people moving around. this is one of the places in eastjerusalem palestinians often, this time of year. broadcast interrupted by interference. a humanitarian ceasefire could be reached by the beginning of ramadan but that hasn't happened, even though channels of communication still remain open. and this is of course the holiest month in the islamic calendar, it is when muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, normally breaking that fast with an iftar meal but in gaza it will be a different ramadan this time around. the united nations have warned of potential mass starvation there. they say that 25% of the population are at risk of mass starvation at the moment. they say the hamas run health ministry in gaza says that 23 people have died so far of malnutrition and they say the majority of those are children. i just want to show you these pictures from eastern gaza. this was people last night trying to mark as best they could the beginning of ramadan. you can see the little traditional lantern's, singing their songs, and really doing what they could to mark this holy time during a time of war. the last day or two we have seen the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu responding to comments broadcast interrupted by interference. invasion of rafah at the end of the strip where more than i million palestinians are sheltering and mr netanyahu said that that invasion would still happen. he didn't give a time broadcast interrupted by interference. achieve israel's stated aim, his stated aim of trying to remove hamas fully from gaza. there is also an aid ship on the way. we have talked in the last few days about attempts to try and get aid into gaza by sea. there is a ship in cyprus that is due to inaugurate this new maritime aid corridor between cyprus and gaza which has been established by the eu, the uk, the us and others. that ship is still in port in larnaca in cyprus at the moment. it's been loaded over the last few days and we were told it was due to set off over the weekend but seems to have met delays and are still in port at the moment. let's talk more about the attempts to get the badly needed aid to civilians in gaza who need it. broadcast interrupted by interference. thank you forjoining us. what is your assessment of the way that aid is getting into gaza at the moment? clearly not enough. how could and should it be more efficient? absolutely. we have far from should it be more efficient? absolutely. we have farfrom enough aid, so aid agencies estimate that we would need about 600 trucks a day to cross into gaza for sufficient supplies. in february it was about 100 trucks a day is so very far from what is needed for food, medical items, but also shelter items, tents, tarpaulins and so on. so there is very high need. we have seen different attempts now to meet this need. we have seen some airdrops, first from thejordanian airdrops, first from the jordanian air airdrops, first from thejordanian air force but now also the american air force but now also the american air force. those look good, absolutely, and they are obviously helping, but they are very small volume if you are comparing it to what is actually needed. bringing in aid by sea sounds great because that vessel currently in cyprus is carrying about 200 tonnes of materials. so that will be very much needed. but it is then also played with the same issues of onward transportation. your docking the ship somewhere but how is the aid actually going to reach people and thatis actually going to reach people and that is a much larger issue. it’s that is a much larger issue. it's interesting _ that is a much larger issue. it's interesting what you were saying there, just little things i noticed you saying about things that look good or sound great but don't necessarily provide the volume of aid needed. seemingly the best way to do that is to go back to the way that things were before the war and to allow aid in by road. remind us why that isn't happening. definitely, bringing in aid by road is the most efficient way of doing this but at the moment we only have two border crossings open, both in the south of gaza, and they are quite limited in what is being let through. you need to have permission to bring goods across and for some goods that permission is being withheld by the israeli authorities, and of course it is then also a question of getting it across. there is lots of checks on the goods will stop and then also the distribution within gaza has been very difficult because the infrastructure is being destroyed, the people are not there, communications are very difficult, internet availability in gaza is quite touch and go, it is not there very often and it is very, very dangerous situation as well. we saw that a little while ago with people being shot who were receiving aid. it is an extremely difficult environment to try and distribute aid in. the road would be best and road will be the onward transportation no matter how we get aid into gaza but it's extremely challenging at the moment. we have heard world leaders _ challenging at the moment. we have heard world leaders pushing - heard world leaders pushing repeatedly for what they call a humanitarian ceasefire. how would that change the picture on the ground in terms of actually getting that aid in? the ground in terms of actually getting that aid in? ., , , ., ., that aid in? the ability to travel more freely _ that aid in? the ability to travel more freely within _ that aid in? the ability to travel more freely within gaza - that aid in? the ability to travel more freely within gaza and - that aid in? the ability to travel more freely within gaza and to l that aid in? the ability to travel l more freely within gaza and to be able to access areas and not be shot at, that would of course be a huge difference. and it also makes a difference. and it also makes a difference to people receiving the aid if they are able to go towards where convoys are going without fear of being at the receiving end of air strikes, of bullets. so it would make a huge difference here to have a ceasefire. also tojust make a huge difference here to have a ceasefire. also to just be able to access different areas of gaza. it's been very difficult to get anything into the north of gaza, so that's been a real big worry for aid agencies. the south of gaza is also very difficult because so many people are compacted into a very small area, so it is quite difficult to reach them and to make sure that it's notjust the strongest people who are getting aid but everybody who are getting aid but everybody who needs it can receive it. so it ceasefire would help immensely to get aid to people who so desperately need it. ., ., ,, need it. doctor sarah shiv ling, thank you _ need it. doctor sarah shiv ling, thank you for— need it. doctor sarah shiv ling, thank you travellers on a plane landing from sydney. stjohn ambulance service treated around 50 people — one person in serious condition. the flight*s carrier the chilean airline latam said the flight la800 had a "technical problem" which caused "strong movement". it is believed the strong movement the plane experienced was a sudden drop. so far 13 people have been taken to a local hospital. let's speak to our reporter in sydney phil mercer. he is following this for us. good to see you. what has happened here? this was a petrifying flight for passengers on board flight la 800. it originated here in sydney. it was on its way to santiago in chile with a stopover in auckland, new zealand's biggest city. about two hours into a three—hour flight, passengers report, some of them experiencing a sudden midair drop and that briefly the plane nosedived and that briefly the plane nosedived and witnesses have described people, passengers and crew flying through the cabin, leaving blood on the roof and pictures posted online have shown people being treated for their injuries, what we do know is that mercifully this service, this latam flight was able to continue its journey, landed on schedule at auckland's international airport and it was there that paramedics have treated 50 people, about a dozen have been taken to hospital. we understand that one of those patients is in a serious condition. sounds absolutely terrifying. what are the airline saying? the sounds absolutely terrifying. what are the airline saying?— are the airline saying? the airline has apologised — are the airline saying? the airline has apologised for _ are the airline saying? the airline has apologised for the _ are the airline saying? the airline has apologised for the injuries - are the airline saying? the airline regulator this is the civic aviation authority in new zealand, it says it intends in the next few days to work with the operator, and presumably the manufacturer of the plane. we understand it is a boeing dreamliner, to work out exactly what happened and why. and once again we are piecing together, hearing from passengers on the service, and one woman said that it was super scary, that the entire plane was screaming, and no doubt passenger testimony and technical details will be scrutinised by air safety regulators in new zealand to try and piece together what happened and why. and obviously to try to stop it happening again.- obviously to try to stop it happening again. obviously to try to stop it ha enin: aaain. ., ~ after a week of meetings, china's annual parliamentary gathering comes to an end later. during this year's national people's congress, premier li chang promised to turn things around for the world's second largest economy and set a growth target of around 5% for this year, similar to last year's goal. lawmakers have also pledged to enact new laws that would modernise china's economy. stephen mcdonell has more from beijing. the last day at the national people's congress features one of the more rubber—stamping sessions of this rubber—stamp gathering. there are a series of reports, a series of proposals from the leadership of the communist party, and invariably they all pass. but what this congress has been about this year is the economy. and you do wonder if at the end of it the chinese people are any clearer as to whether or not their government has a plan forfixing the big economic headaches they have. for example, you know, there are the big messages, i suppose, the communist party rhetoric to rev up the troops. but that's a long way from specifics. people will be glad to hear, for example, that the idea is to have a consumption—led recovery with better pay, with better—paid jobs, that the tech sector is going to be backed. but again, this is all very general in terms of the language. and certainly overseas as well, a lot of people have been watching this congress because economically when china sneezes, the rest of the world catches a cold. on this last day of the congress, traditionally, there had been a press conference from the premier, china's number two leader, but not this year. it seems that xi jinping doesn't want to share the limelight with another senior member of the party for even a couple of hours. and so that opportunity to hear from the premier, for the chinese people to get messages from the person who's supposed to be in charge of the economy, well, that no longer exists. i suppose they'll have to wait over the coming weeks, over the coming months, will there be something from the government here to give them a more solid idea of how the government intends to fix the chinese economy? stephen mcdonell there. two hollywood now. the oscar support the biggest and best films of the year which sunshine, we'll have some rain and it's going to be windy, but it's getting milder now. today we've got this weather front draped across parts of northern ireland and also western scotland, and that's going to be bringing in some light and patchy rain. there's enough cloud around for some patchy light rain in some eastern areas, but most of us will stay dry but cloudy, sunny skies through the afternoon. southwest wales and southwest england with isolated showers and highs up to 12 degrees. through this evening and overnight there'll be some mist forming in the east. the rain will push up into the northern isles and then a new band of rain comes in from the atlantic. that rain will be heavier and it's going to be accompanied by strengthening winds. these are overnight lows. we're not anticipating any issues with frost tonight. so into tomorrow, you can see we've got quite a few weather fronts on this chart. basically, that means that we are looking at a cloudy day with outbreaks of rain pushing in from the west and moving eastwards and also northwards, windy through the irish sea and also western scotland and temperatures 6 in the north to 13 as we push down towards the south. now, tuesday into wednesday, we've got this next front sinking south. this is a cold front. it's going to weaken as it pushes out of scotland and northern ireland and into england and wales. and you can see, too, ahead of it there will be a lot of cloud around. behind it, some brighter skies and some showers. but it's going to be windy across the northern half of the country. these black circles represent the strength of the wind gusts with gales possible across the far northwest. temperature wise, 8 in lerwick to 15, possibly 16 somewhere in the southeastern quarter. and then as we head from thursday into friday, the wind is coming up from the southwest and it will be quite windy in southern areas, as you can see, just by looking at those isobars on friday. so look at the effect that's having on the temperature, the milder conditions or the warmer conditions for some pushing to all but the northern isles. but even in the northern isles, temperatures will be higher than they have been. so the outlook then remains unsettled with rain or showers at times. windy at times, but getting milder. hello, i'm nicky schiller. welcome to this bbc news special on the oscars. it was
