welcome along. qualification for the knockout stage of the champions league is now out of the hands of manchester united, after they were held to a gripping 3—3 draw by galatasaray. united now have to beat bayern munich at old trafford in theirfinal group game, and hope that the turkish side draw their game against copenhagen on the same night. it was an incredible game in istanbul. united led 2—0, and 3—1, but their goalkeeper andre onana should have done much better with both hakim ziyech*s goals, which came from free kicks. the draw means united stay bottom of the group and even beating bayern munich is unlikely to be enough. the united manager refused to point the finger his keeper. we win together, we lose together. and you see the progress in this team. i take many positives from this game. at some stages we played like i want my team to play. it was enjoyable to watch them, so proactive, dynamic and brave, and scored great goals. and even after we had some setbacks, we kept going until the end, because in the end we should have won, as well, with the big chances from scott mctominay. so of course i am disappointed, because we should have managed the game better. we will learn from that, but you see this team is in development. arsenal are at a much better place. they needed just a draw at home to lens to ensure a place in the last 16. they did much more than that. they were 5—0 up by half—time. they are the first english team to lead by five goals in the champions league at half—time. arsenal winning the group now. the europa league is the best that lens can hope for. jude bellingham's incredible start to life continues. he scoed at the bernabeu against napoli. the goal put them 2—1 up. they won, making it five wins out of five. bellingham is now up to 15 goals in all competitions for real. napoli need a point against braga to qualify in second in the final match. these are the nights other results. psv eindhoven qualified, along with arsenal, from group b, beating sevilla, pepe with an injury time winner. sevilla are out. real sociedad and inter milan were already through from group d. both drew and they play each other next month to see who finishes top of the group. rugby union news. england captain owen farrell won't take part in next year's six nations championship. he will take a break from international rugby to prioritise his and his family's mental well—being. he will continue to pay for his club side saracens. he has been capped 112 times since he made his debut 11 years ago. he led them to the final of the 2019 world cup, to the semifinals this year. he missed the first two games, though, of that tournament, through suspension, after a dangerous tackle in a warm—up game. he was booed by some sections of england's supporters on his return. his father andy, the ireland coach, described his son's treatment as disgusting, and a circus. england say they fully support his decision. the head coach steve borthwick said, since making his debut, he has been an integral part of the england setup for over a decade and the demands on elite athletes are extremely challenging. he is an exemplary player, captain and leader, always gives his all for his country. it is with typical courage that owen has made this decision to open up in this manner. golf news — luke donald will stay on as team europe's captain for the next ryder cup in 2025. the former world number one led europe to a brilliant victory in rome earlier this year against the usa. he has represented europe four times as a player as well. he will be the first europe captain in 30 years to serve consecutive terms. bernard gallagher was captain three times, between *91 and *95. british gymnastics is introducing new safeguarding rules, meaning coaches can no longer weigh gymnasts, deny them water breaks or take them out of primary school to train. the new policy comes after an independent report found systemic abuse in the sport. the changes will affect hundreds of thousands of youngsters in clubs across the uk. natalie pirks has more. at huntington gymnastics club, they know a thing or two about training champions. three, two, one. good girl, well done. but positive encouragement, with parents allowed to watch, has not always been the norm in the sport. just make me feel worthless, itjust turned me into a shell of who i used to be. last summer, an independent report described systemic abuse in british gymnastics, with some children starved and subjected to the tyranny of the scales. today's new safeguarding policy says gymnasts over ten can only be weighed by a qualified sports scientist, with written consent from the child and their carer, and after horror stories of children denied water and toilet breaks, new hydration rules called this kind of behaviour physical abuse. no coaches should be weighing gymnasts, categorically. for us, this is about making sure within gymnastics that we don't see them as gymnasts, we see them as young people, as children, and therefore we understand what their requirements are, and their needs, and there is no desire for us to put medals above welfare. it's notjust issues around weight and hydration where the governing body has seen fit to act. children as young as seven are being pulled out of school for extra training sessions, and that now should be a thing of the past, particularly for primary school kids. some feel those over 12 should have been included, but parents here are pleased british gymnastics has addressed education for the first time. there will only be a handful of children who will go on to achieve olympic gold, and it is such a gamble of a sport that education has to be key to their growth, as well. so for children who are on that pathway to possibly be in an olympic team, it is not necessarily all that bad if they miss some school for it, as long as they are not falling behind academically. eloise regularly missed school as an acrobatic gymnast. she quit the sport at 14, tired of constant weighing and body shaming. she is still the only gymnast who had received a settlement from the governing body for the abuse she suffered. definitely a step in the right direction and it is a great start, but i think it is hard to fully move on when you have a complaints process that is not delivering. a lot of those coaches have not been banned and are still active in gymnastics environments, which is wrong. british gymnastics* track record means some are sceptical about how robustly these new policies will be enforced but today it made a very public promise to put to put children first. just weeks after record viewing figures for women's sport were revealed, now it seems it is being matched by the money. global revenue generated by elite women sports is predicted to surpass £1 billion for the first time next year. the forecast is based on match day, broadcast and commercial revenue, and has doubled over just the last two years. events like the world cup have contributed to that success, along with star names, and some great stories as well. jennifer haskell from deloitte says it is all helping raise the profile and financial health of women's sport. commercial revenue is this major driver in women's sport, and commercial revenue is everything from league sponsorships, club sponsorships, etc. we saw that women's sport is starting to have its own commercial identity and that has been the driver over the past few years, and now we are also starting to see broadcast revenues increase, and match day revenues increase, as we increase the capacity of stadiums, use the ticket price as a leader, as well, so in 2024 we will see all three of those categories continue to rise. in snooker, mark selby is into the uk championship quarterfinals in york, after a nail—biting final frame decider against his good friend, barry hawkins. the two—time champion started the match with the highest break of the tournament so far, 142. hawkins battled from behind a force the decider. it is mark selby, a four—time world champion, who goes through to the last eight. next up for him, judd trump, which should be a terrific match. he made the perfect start to his match against welshman, jamiejones. took the frame with a century break and it was a six—frame whitewash. mark williams won the battle of the welshman, coming from behind to beat jamie clarke, six frames to four. williams described the century in the final frame as the best he's ever made in a match. he will face ding junhui next, after he beat england's tom ford, 6—3. our top story — manchester united throwing away a two—goal lead against galatasaray is our top story, qualifications for the champions league last 16 now out of their hands. even victory over bayern munich in theirfinal group game next month might not be enough. reaction to that, lots more details of the champions league matches on the bbc sport website. that is all for now. hello, there. talk of the town this week has just been how cold it's become. yes, on wednesday, we started off with a hard frost in the lake district. temperatures were sitting at —7, first thing in the morning, and despite lots of sunshine throughout the day, they struggled to climb above freezing by the middle of wednesday afternoon. now, we could actually see a similar story on thursday, a widespread hard frost to begin the day, the exception down in the south west, with this developing area of low pressure. that's going to bring outbreaks of rain, and windy with it, as well. we could see gusts of wind on exposed coasts close to 50 mph. let's zoom in and look at that in a little more detail. it will be primarily rain across the isles of scilly and much of cornwall, some wet snow, perhaps, across the moors, and some of this frontal system willjust brush the south coast, maybe the odd spot ortwo of rain, south of london. a cold day, generally, four or five degrees, some freezing fog slow to lift in the midlands. now, with that northeasterly breeze, one or two wintry showers along exposed east coasts of northern england and eastern scotland, sheltered western areas will see the best of any sunny spells, but again, a cold day — two to five degrees quite widely across the country. now, as we move out of thursday into friday, again, light winds, clear skies, once again, those temperatures falling away. it looks likely to be another cold and frosty start to friday morning, and, potentially, friday could be the coldest spell over the next few days. so some freezing fog quite possible, as well, and a subtle change in wind direction means that we run the risk of a few more showers running down through the north coast of northern ireland, and down through the irish sea, as well. so a few coastal showers around. inland — dry, plenty of sunshine, but another cold day — zero to five degrees at the very best. now, as we move out of friday into the start of the weekend, we could see a few more showers drifting in from the west, but a relatively quiet start, before, as we move into the middle part of the week, we could see areas of low pressure bringing yet more rain in and perhaps something a little less cold. so it'll be a cold and frosty start to our weekend, but, as you can see, more showers are likely and those temperatures gradually starting to creep up. that's it. stay warm. live from washington, this is bbc news. revered and controversial. fomer us top diplomat henry kissinger dies at the age of 100. negotiations continue to extend the temporary truce between israel and hamas — with just hours before it expires. 16 hostages were released from gaza on the sixth day of the truce, in exchange for 30 palestinian prisoners.
