a pygmy round—eared bat returns to its termite—nest home in the lowland forests of costa rica. time for a look at the weather, here's thomas schafernaker. it looks like the cold weather is here to stay for the rest of the week and into the weekend. there are hints that perhaps it will turn milder into next week but if so i think it will be a gradual process. so cold few days with light frost but no widespread snow. this is what the satellite picture looks like, the satellite picture looks like, the best of the sunshine to this central swathes of the country. most of the towns and cities around two or 3 c. so a showers across the scottish hills and north—east of england, possibly along the north sea coast. but generally clear spells for most of us overnight and with temperatures even in some cities in the north as low as minus five degrees. we are talking about january, february weather. i slightly hesitated about that snow earlier on because we have this weather front which will brush south—western parts of the uk and there is a possibility that through there is a possibility that through the early hours of the morning we could have a little spell of wet snow across parts of dartmoor and exmoor but more generally in the south where talk about cloudy and rainy conditions. we unpleasant for portsmouth and the isle of wight. wintry showers in the north and for many that crisp sunshine. but feeling cold at around three degrees. you can see that cold drizzly cloudy weather in the south hanging around. and then clear skies for tomorrow evening. then thursday evening into friday and saturday, the peak of that cold weather as we see these easterly winds coming from scandinavia where at the moment it is freezing cold with copious amounts of snow. but not here. so friday a crisp day with some sunshine, temperatures perhaps lower still barely above freezing for the lowlands of scotland, three degrees in the south. so low to single figures, more like january and february. a bit of a mixed bag at times with some sunshine at times and some wintry showers or rain depending on where you are. wrap up warmly! and that's bbc news at one. the news continues here on bbc one — as now its time to join our colleagues across the nations and regions for the news hello and welcome to sportsday. u efa uefa stand and the var who made the decision to get the referee to give psg their penalty last night. cultures are banned from weighing gymnasts and a new british gymnastics rules. and luke donaldson is named team europe's ryder cup captain for 2025. now it's the match that drew a lot of criticism on tuesday — and uefa has stood down the var who made the decision to guide the referee to give psg a penalty in their 1—1 draw with newcastle in paris. tomasz kviatkowski, who performed var duties for the world cup final in qatar last year, was scheduled to be the var tonight for the real sociedad versus rb salzburg champions league game. but he has now been replaced. alasdair gill is in paris. newcastle united left the stadium last night with what they thought was less than they deserved, one point instead of three. kylian mbappe*s late penalty, the decision to give it was criticised by pundits, and it seems uefa might actually agree with them because this morning they have suspended the video assistant referee from last night, tomasz kviatkowski, he was supposed to take up that road again tonight for the rb salzburg grey at real sociedad, but he has been stood down. the penalty last night came after the ball bounced onto the chest of livramento then onto his left elbow. that in the premier league would be unlikely to be given as a penalty. the rules say if the ball hits another part of the body before the arm it shouldn't be a penalty. guidance issued to uefa in april suggested that should apply in european competition too but crucially that recommendation was never formally implemented. the end result is newcastle united will feel hard done by, eddie howe and his team, to leavejust hard done by, eddie howe and his team, to leave just a hard done by, eddie howe and his team, to leavejust a point, but they are still the results that tell that we are back in a strong — results that tell that we are back in a strong way. let's move on to some new guidlines that have been announced. under new british gymnastics rules designed to stop "harmful practices" coaches will now no longer be able to weigh gymnasts. let's go live to our sports correspondent natalie pirks to find out more. can you tell us more about what has led to this new rule being implemented? well, three key new policies they are a direct result of last summer's independent report called the white review which found systemic emotional and physical abuse in the sport of gymnastics. we heard horror stories about children being made to train on broken bones for example and we heard about the tyranny of the scales where excessive weighing was causing eating disorders in many gymnasts. so the first policy is that no coach can ever weigh a child again and any child over the age of ten has to be weighed only by a qualified medical practitioner with yearly written consent from the child and their care and only where there is scientifically valid rationale, so pretty robust rules. around hydration, it caused it make it because denying children what entirely breaks physical abuse. we have had children as young as seven been taken out of school to continue their gymnastics training and that is banned for the under 12. the governing body saying no child needs to miss education in pursuit of their gymnastic ambition. i spoke to their gymnastic ambition. i spoke to the ceo of british gymnastics was equivocal —— my unequivocal. now coaches should be weighing gymnasts, categorically foster there is no need _ gymnasts, categorically foster there is no need for weight management or monitoring. _ is no need for weight management or monitoring, the only time we would expect— monitoring, the only time we would expect weighing to be involved in gymnastics is by a professional and there _ gymnastics is by a professional and there would need to be a reason for that and _ there would need to be a reason for that and again that would be with the consent of the gymnast. there are those who _ the consent of the gymnast. there are those who feel— the consent of the gymnast. there are those who feel these - the consent of the gymnast. there are those who feel these rules - the consent of the gymnast. ii—ii” are those who feel these rules don't go far enough particularly around education, that children doing their gcses under 16 shouldn't be included. technically these are now so actionable, no longer guidelines, they are not suggesting that coaches should follow the rules, these are mandatory and anyone found flouting the rules could then face sanctions. the big question that many are asking isjust how the big question that many are asking is just how this can be policed, 400,000 members of british gymnastics, they cannot be going into every gym and speak to every coach so there will be relying on welfare officers and on the gymnasts themselves and on parents to help what they call be the change in the sport because they are working through a backlog of hundreds of complaints and concerns and they need everybody*s help in order to do it. need everybody's help in order to do it. ., ~ , ., need everybody's help in order to do finance experts deloitte predict women's sport revenue will reach £1.02 billion in 2024 after a year of growth featuring the fifa women's world cup in 2023. football is forecast to generate £439 million pounds, with basketball predicted to be the second most valuable sport with £280 million. the forecast is based on matchday, broadcast and commercial revenue.it comes after a successful fifa women's world cup. if you live broadcast revenue for example, in the uk, women's super league brings in around £8 million every year. compare that to the premier league, we're talking about 3 billion. so still a huge gap but i think what the report does is it paints a really clear picture globally at the direction of travel and what really excites me is the pace of investment. we are seeing here and here incredible growth. but notjust in here and here incredible growth. but not just in football, here and here incredible growth. but notjust in football, notjust in basketball, this report shows that other sports such as golf and tennis are really growing at a pace and i think what's fundamentally sitting underneath everything this report goes through as we still need more investment. ronnie o'sullivan eased past anthony mcgill at the uk championship yesterday and the seven—time world champion says snooker*s governing body asked him "to consider" his future in the sport in a recent letter. o'sullivan, 47, is facing disciplinary action for publicly criticising the world snooker tour over its stance on five players appearing in an exhibition event in macau earlier this season. he has also threatened to quit snooker over the row. the wst has been asked to respond to o'sullivan's latest comments. no o'sullivan today, butjudd trump is currently in second round action against jamie jones. trump took the opening frame with a century break. trump is enjoying an excellent season, having won three titles to date. you can follow the match on bbc two, red button, iplayer and the bbc sport website. and luke donaldson has been
