released on the sixth day of the temporary truce between israel and hamas. 12 more hitters were released from gaza early on tuesday, some shown here. the total number is now more than eight fred. the hostage handover tuesday included ten israelis and tutor hostages. theyjoin the 150 other palestinians, mostly women and teenage boys, who have so far been released from the israeli jail since the truth began on friday. the originalfour—day truth began on friday. the original four—day poison fighting was extended by two days to allow for more hostages to be freed. more than 160 are still being held in gaza. tal heinrich, spokesperson for israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. she told me there were really to release donna cottages. should there be another extension? we certainly hope so and thank you for having me on tonight. i can confirm at this hour that israel has received another list of potential hostages who may be released tomorrow. we have received the list. we are notifying the families of the people who appear on the list and all other families of hostages who are still being held in the gaza strip. we are talking about 173 hostages who are still there and we certainly hope that this materialises tomorrow and that we will see, hopefully, on sixth group of hostages leaving the gaza strip and returning home to israel. so we said that we are willing to extend the mechanism, as we saw today, as what took place today and for every ten extra israeli hostages released by hamas we agree to another extra day of humanitarian pause in the fighting. i can tell you that it is an interesting development that today we saw the palestinian islamichhad, the second—largest terrorist organisation in gaza, fully funded by iran, they put out a statement that among the hostages released today, some were held by them. this is what palestinianjihad are saying. your reporter mentioned a ten—month—old baby and his family and according to the idf spokesperson in arabic, the family is being held by the palestinian islamichhad. on that list of people who will be released as we sit here in the us, first of all, is that ten—month—old being released and are americans on this list? i cannot say, i cannot provide any details of this kind. because, you know, human life hangs in the balance here and it is all very delicate and sensitive. we have a procedure in place the way we do these things. i understand. so looking ahead, we know there is interest on both sides for the ceasefire to be extended and have more hostages released. at the same time your government and your prime minister have said that the fighting will resume. are you worried that those words could derail any further efforts to extend a ceasefire and get more hostages released 7 no. we do not see these two goals as contradictory. they go hand—in—hand. we said that we will eliminate the hamas terrorist regime in gaza and that we want to see all hostages back and we are determined to bring each and every one of them home and we will do that. you have to remember that as president biden stated correctly a few days ago, hamas only responds to pressure. military pressure and diplomatic pressure that we exert in various ways behind—the—scenes and we saw the results of both pressures. we would not have been able to bring to the release of the hostages, the five groups that we saw so far, if it were not for the military pressure that we exerted on hamas. we also saw the national security council spokesperson john kirby saying today that it we talk about military pressure, he said that now there are more gazans in the south there is an added burden on israel to account for extra innocent life in the south in any operations. from our own journalists on the ground we know there have been strikes in southern gaza as well. what does this mean for an eventual continuation of israeli operations? we do not want to see any palestinian civilians being caught in the crossfire. not in the north, not in the south, not anywhere. there are reports of more than 111,000 people killed and more than 5,000 children. how does that add to not wanting to see civilians caught in the crossfire? these are numbers provided by hamas and we should remember that and take them with a grain of salt because according to hamas no terrorists were eliminated whatsoever and i can tell you that thousands have including several hamas top commanders as well. we have designated a special safe zone in the south—west and also in different neighbourhoods in the palestinian civilians, they know because we notify them in various ways and we repeated multiple times and once the military activity will resume they will know where to evacuate and these are safe zones where we also see humanitarian aid come in. let me ask you one more question about the hostages because that is what we will be watching closely over the next few days. 0nce women and children are released, that is perhaps the easier part of these negotiations. then it comes to the remaining hostages. what happens then? how do you get past that? well, i cannot really reveal the tactics and the strategy behind the israeli efforts to bring back all hostages home. everyone knows it is a complicated situation and we did not want to be in this situation, yet here we are. we are very committed as a nation to this principle of leaving nobody behind and this is exactly what we are intent on doing. thank you so much forjoining us tonight on bbc news. thank you. altamont corresponded - thank you. altamont corresponded paul . thank you. altamont - corresponded paul adams has more on the ceasefire and the hostage deal. for the fifth time in five days we have seen a successful exchange of hostages and prisoners. first of all we saw the emergence of ten more is really hostages, all of them women from the very old to a teenager who amazingly emerged carrying herfamily*s emerged carrying her family's pet emerged carrying herfamily*s pet dog. they were also accompanied by two remark thai migrant workers, part of a sizeable group of thai workers who were seized on october the seventh, so they were all seen being handed over to the red cross and taken out across the egyptian border from where they then made their way into israel. a short time after that we saw palestinian prisoners released from israeli jails, 15 women and 15 male teenagers, all released and arriving at the west bank city of marla mark where they were reunited with their families stop there we are, another co—ordinated successful exchange of hostages and prisoners —— ramallah. all of which raises hope that more may follow. this was the first day of a two—day extension to the original hostage deal which will run out tomorrow but then there will be possibly another 48—hour extension if the two parties, israeland 48—hour extension if the two parties, israel and hamas, 48—hour extension if the two parties, israeland hamas, can agree on the terms of that. negotiations about that are still going on. we had is really egyptian and american intelligence officials in qatar, in doha, having negotiations about precisely that. we don't need to know the outcome of that but hopes are reasonably high that we will see this further two—day extension. beyond that, wejust don't know. the israeli premise that benjamin netanyahu has said that the military campaign will resume with what he calls full force but we don't know when and we don't know whether they will be further delays if this hostage and present exchange process continues deliver as it has done over the past five days. as you had that the gulf state of qatar has played a critical role in brokering the hostage deal between israel and hamas. 0n between israel and hamas. on tuesday us and israeli intelligence met in qatar to discuss the possible next phase of the ceasefire. the qatari foreign minister spokesman says the hope is to reach a sustainable truth but will eventually turn and to the wall. the more, negotiating parties i spoke to amr hamzawy, director, middle east programme, carnegie endowment for international peace. we just had an interview that we just had an interview that we just had an interview that we just had as well but not all hostages who are being held are being held by hamas and i imagine that complicates negotiations a bit, so how do you deal with the other groups like palestinianjihad? thank you for having me, it is a pleasure tojoin. i believe on the one hand hamas is the most powerful movement on the ground in gaza and i believe movements such as the popularfront and the islamichhad movement are looked at as allies of hamas, junior allies in a way. does it complicate things on the ground that the hostages are held by movements or splinter groups where no—one for sure is aware of all their identities? yes. is it impossible without political will on both sides? i believe not. i believe it can be figured out if it is the will of the palestinian side and the israeli side is to extend the current truce to allow for further release of hostages on one hand and further release of palestinian hostages, prisoners on the other hand, as well as more humanitarian aid, it can be sorted out. let's talk about the negotiations themselves and the role that qatar has played here. why have the qataris been so instrumental in brokering this truce? it is for two reasons. number one, qatar has hosted political leadership of hamas for many years and, secondly, qatar has been instrumental in agreement with the israeli government or different israeli governments in funding hamas governence and administration of gaza. but it is not only qatari, egypt does well due to its location, of course, and its close ties in the sense of security ties with hamas and other groups, has been playing a role. so it is a true egyptian-qatari mediation backed by the us and, in fact, came at a moment when the two parties, israel on one hand and hamas on the other, have come to a conclusion that a truce is welcome. we must look at the events on the ground for the last 50 days that led to the truce with different factors continuing. the mass destruction, huge number of civilian casualties. let me ask about that as well. in the region we have seen countries likejordan and egypt calling for an end to fighting and pointing to the mass loss of life in gaza and we spoke last week we spoke to a palestinian leader and asked about the next phase and what that would be for gaza and he spoke about a temporary international force being in place in gaza, perhaps from the united nations. what do you think of that? would that be accepted in the region? what are your thoughts? my concern is that we do not hear much from the palestinian side so far. it is very difficult, actually impossible to decide for palestinians without factoring in different palestinian voices. i'm not only referring to critics of the pa but also referring to different movements in gaza and different leaders on the ground. it is difficult to decide what the palestinian future should be without factoring in the palestinian voice. so who is speaking for them at the moment? this is what needs to be done. if we want to develop a situation from this truce which i hope will hold for humanitarian aid and release of hostages, prisoners and so forth, if we develop this situation from a truce into a workable framework where each party can figure out what comes next in the interim i believe it will be on the palestinian groups, the different groups maybe under the umbrella of the palestinian liberation 0rganisation to negotiate a position which will have to be decided in a consensus—lad manner, a vision which will include not only how to govern in gaza in the interim but how to restore the two state solution which is what i think is the only solution we have dissolved this conflict between israelis and palestinians. interesting to get your perspective on this conversation and thank you forjoining us. the current truth is to allow humanitarian aid for people inside gaza. the us lifted over £54,000 of medical supplies and food idiot to be delivered to citizens in gaza. the shipment marks the first of three planned deliveries in the coming days. my colleague spoke to founder of the world central kitchen about the progress. thank you very much forjoining us. you have been feeding the people of israel and gaza since shortly after this conflict began. before the current ceasefire, how much had conditions deteriorated? myself personally. _ conditions deteriorated? myself personally. i— conditions deteriorated? myself personally, i have _ conditions deteriorated? myself personally, i have not— conditions deteriorated? myself personally, i have not been - personally, i have not been inside gaza but already with the partners we have inside we know the situation is very complicated. 0bviously know the situation is very complicated. obviously the last few days with the ceasefire, humanitarian aid has been able to reach our different partners and i know organisations. but obviously we need to understand if we do not lead tracks going into gaza in huge quantities every single day, we already can be talking that we have famine. that we have a really difficult situation. so that is why we and our partner since the beginning of the conflict have been able to do between hot meals and food kids almost 6 million meals. not only in gaza but we have obviously we are feeding in egypt, palestinians that they were caught out of palestine and they have not been able to access their homes inside gaza. people in israel that were affected by the terrorist attack by hamas and now we are feeding people in lebanon on because hezbollah is obviously attacking israel and israel is defending themselves. so you can see, the situation is most important that we are helping the palestine people but this is also spreading to other countries, other parts of the region, that is why it is very vital that very soon there will be a total ceasefire and then humanitarian organisations like art than others will be able to provide people with food, water and everything else they will need to start the reconstruction. ~ . ., reconstruction. what have you been able _ reconstruction. what have you been able to _ reconstruction. what have you been able to give _ reconstruction. what have you been able to give to _ reconstruction. what have you been able to give to people i been able to give to people now? 0bviously been able to give to people now? obviously there is a shortage of clean and running water, no electricity, no fuel. what have you been able to give them that is helpful? gillett we have been created from the beginning because already we were inside for the last two years with this are amazing organisation which is a medical organisation which is a medical organisation but they partnered with us, they have almost 50 years experience in palestine. we had experience of food and began very simply buying fruits and vegetables from all the farmers. we began buying fish from the fishermen. also dummett always very creatively to make sure we could be providing the most amount of meals. again, it is only a drop of water in a big ocean of need, but we have already been able not only to do close to 6 million meals but already in the last few days we have been able to put in on our side 65 trucks, we have another 135 trucks, we have another 135 trucks on the way to gaza from cairo. 0k. around the world and across the uk, this is bbc news. is taylah gatt at some other headlines now. australia will ban imports of disposable babe starting january 2024 in order to curb nicotine addiction are children. new laws will be introduced that hold the production, advertisement and production of simple use paper. the rates of addiction have continued to rise in australia. pope francis has cancelled his planned trip to the cop 28 climate meeting because of the effects of influenza and lung inflammation, according to the vatican. early on tuesday, the vatican. early on tuesday, the vatican said he was going ahead with the troops due to improvements with regards to the flu but after advice from doctors he advised not to travel "with great regret but. evan gershkovich suspended untiljanuary 30 according to russian newsagency. the third extension since he was arrested on espionage charges in march this year. he and the wall streetjournal denied the allegation that the us government has declared him being wrongfully detained. you are watching bbc news. foreign minister making up the nato security lights are meeting in brussels to address the pressing security issues facing the world. while a crane is top of the genreau, other issues including the israel— gaza war are being discussed. 0ur correspondence sent us this from the conference. the us secretary of defence is attending the two day meeting and he said that the nato alliance is more important than it has ever been and that nato has stepped up to deal with the serious challenges that it is facing. 0ne serious challenges that it is facing. one of those challenges is the conflict in the middle east which is a massive security concern here what many nato countries are wrote about here is an escalation of the conflict. the official position of nato is that israel has a right to defend itself within international law. but that is not that simple because there are 31 countries in nato. you have countries like the us and germany, that are strongly backing israel and then you have other countries, for example spain or belgium, that have been calling for a ceasefire. antony blinken is travelling to israel later this week and it is not clear whether he will be able to deliver a united message from his nato allies. 0ne think that everybody he agrees on is that they have welcomed israel's decision to extend a pause in the fighting. they have actually called for that to be extended even further. but there are concerns about the fact that this is just a short—term solution. there are a lot of questions about what happens next. to some positive news out of india now, where in the state of uttarakhand rescuers pulled out all 40 when rescuers pulled out all 40 when rescuers who were trapped for 17 days inside a collapsed tunnel. miners drilled through the debris of rock and concrete to reach them, triggering celebration across india wants to rescue was complete. the evacuation of the men who were low—wage workers from some of india's boy states began after rescuers broke through the debris in the tunnel on november 12. the trackmen were pulled out on wheel stretches through a fee foot wide steel pipe. the bbc has been on location. is some more. this moment, more than two weeks in the making. 41 trapped workers finally rescued. cheering an eruption of cheers from workers and onlookers. people sharing sweets and hugs. these are the ambulances with the first workers that have come out from inside the tunnel. 17 days they have spent inside that tunnel and now they are finally out and in those ambulances. rescuers spent the last several days pushing an 800—millimetre pipe through 60 metres of rubble and debris. 0nce through, the men were pulled out on wheeled stretchers, one by one. it's been a harrowing experience for the men inside and those working to get them out. and how do you feel? it doesn't to me. goodbye, darling, until tomorrow. jimmy. the family will hold a private service on wednesday before misses carter is laid to rest. and that is our show at this hour. thank you so much for watching. to stay with us, our team from london will be back in the next hour with an update on your headline. thank you for watching. hello there. well, temperatures will be plunging even further still, as we head through the rest of the week. there's more snowfall always possible, particularly across the north of scotland, such as here in aviemore, but even potentially to some lower levels as well, with wintry showers feeding into north sea—facing coast. there'll be some icy stretches here. but for most of us, it is expected to stay dry. but just temperatures really struggling by day to get out of mid—single figures, widespread air frost by night. and that's how we're starting off wednesday morning, with temperatures widely below freezing, maybe as low as —7 to —9 degrees celsius across parts of scotland, a little milderfor the south and the west underneath some areas of cloud, and with a few rain showers around. there'll also be some patches of freezing fog. and where we see those, they'll be slow to lift and clear. there'll be some more wintry showers just feeding into northern scotland for these north sea—facing coasts as well. possibly a few accumulations a little further inland. those showers as far south as lincolnshire, but for most, sunny spells, temperatures not getting much past three to five degrees, but of course, milder in the far south and the west underneath all of that cloud. and that's where we look to find this low pressure system that's been really quite troublesome through the week. but now, it does look much more likely that this is going to be falling as rain towards the channel coast as we head through thursday, could possibly lap onshore at times given more clouds and outbreaks of rain towards the south coast, and maybe a bit of wintriness over the tops of the moors in the south or west with the elevation. further north, though, some sunny spells again, wintry showers for north sea—facing coast. temperatures once more unlikely to make it much past three to five degrees celsius. let's take a look at friday because not a lot is set to change. we've got more of an easterly wind possibly feeding some showers through parts of the thames estuary, over the downs, perhaps the higher ground here. but for the most part, i think it should stay dry. again, there'll be some sunny spells and quite a bit of added wind chill as well. as you can see from the temperature anomaly map, temperatures are well below the seasonal average, marked in the blue here. all of that cold air just sweeping down from scandinavia. and there's no real improvement in the temperatures, either, as we head through the weekend and into the start of next week. still feeling bitterly cold. here's the temperature outlook for our capital cities, possibly a bit of wintriness on saturday night, again, into sunday further south. bye for now. voice-over: this is bbc news. we will have the headlines for you at the top of the hour, which is straight after this programme. welcome to hardtalk. i'm stephen sackur. in recent years, israel has sought to establish diplomatic and economic relationships with gulf arab nations. so—called normalisation was agreed with the uae and bahrain, talks were progressing with saudi arabia and that, of course, was before the current israel—hamas war. so what kind of fallout has that had in the gulf? well, my guest is jasem albudaiwi, secretary general of the gulf cooperation council. could the largely family—run gulf states be destabilised by the conflict in gaza?
