qatar, egypt and the us helped resolve the issue thirty—nine more resolve the issue, thirty—nine more palestinian prisoners — all women and minors detained by israel are due to be freed in exchange for the release of the hostages. live now to our middle east correspondent tom bateman in jerusalem. what's the latest we know and what's been the reaction where you are to this latest release of hostages? what we know is the group of 13 israelis and four tight nationals cross the border into egypt and have been taken by israeli officials to seven israel as happened last night being taken to several different hospitals in israel. that will be the first opportunity they have two be reunited with family members in person. —— tile. we have comp formation now from qatar and both the palestinians and israelis that 39 palestinians have been released for custody. qatar says that they are women and children because that is the framework of the entire agreement about the reciprocal releases. as for that delay, it was supposed to be four o'clock in the afternoon local time that the israeli hostages were due to be handed over by hamas to the red cross in gaza. that our tipped over with no news for the it then took a couple of hours before we got the first glimpses as to what was behind this delay. the armed wing of hamas accused the israelis of breaching the terms of the agreement because they said that fewer than 70 aid trucks, humanitarian aid trucks have crossed from the salt to the north of the gaza strip. they claim that was a breach of the agreement. the israeli military categorically denied that, they said they weren't responsible for the number of aid trucks, a coordinated but it was the united nations and aid agencies that carried out the actual aid supplies. whatever the truth behind what caused that delay, it was sorted out, qatar, the mediator and egypt thenit out, qatar, the mediator and egypt then it made it clear that progress had been made. we saw then news that the handover had taken place so those hostages were taken down to the rafah border crossing into egypt. and now to be taken to those israeli hospitals we expect at some point soon to get more of the images that we saw last night to some of those palestinian prisoners being released, due to be reunited with theirfamilies in released, due to be reunited with their families in the occupied west bank and in occupied eastjerusalem. 39 palestinian prisoners, women and minors released. we have some live images of the west bank in the scene as you mentioned, this deal of freeing hostages and palestinian prisoners. at this time do we have any more details on those prisoners being released from israeli jails? and when they might be able to be reunited with their families? i think in terms of the latter part of that, that will happen quite quickly. some reports that some of those from eastjerusalem have been taken to their homes, i don't have confirmed yet. but we saw yesterday that once the process is under way that once the process is under way that things move pretty quickly. in fact, what seen yesterday at the checkpoint close to 0fer complex work confrontations between palestinians and israeli forces because at that point there'd been a small delay but it really highlighted how highly charged this whole atmosphere is. and you see more of those images now around the releases. 0ne more of those images now around the releases. one of the things today it's about the numbers involved because we know it's 39 palestinian prisoners, that's because this deal is operating on a multiple of three. for every one israeli hostage released by hamas there are three palestinian prisoners released. that was the way the negotiation was hammered out, mediated by qatar. there are thought to be up to 7000 palestinians held in israeli jails. the israelis had released a list of 300 people that it said would be eligible for release as part of this entire agreement. that's because there are thought to be around 100 civilian women and children being held hostage by hamas. in terms of that multiple of three, if israel hopes to get 100 out over the course of nine days you'll be talking about 300 palestinians. it was also in a sense publishing the whole list with 300 names was designed to create an incentive to put pressure on hamas. what you then had was a dynamic where those palestinian families could see their loved ones on that list of 300. and would therefore be hoping that over the course of the coming days that they are relatives could be released. by putting the names in the public domain, i think that was a deliberate tactic and designed to create pressure to keep momentum going with this process. the way the truce is designed for every 2a hours to ten, 12, that kind of number of hostages to be released by hamas and then three times that palestinians should be released by the israelis. clearly, the israelis want to get to the point where they can get the biggest number of hostages released with up as a sweep and saying there are so many things that can go wrong. there's so many moving parts and links in this chain related to an ongoing need for a cease—fire as part of this limited truce for that it remains a very shaky agreement.— shaky agreement. given that difficult chain _ shaky agreement. given that difficult chain of— shaky agreement. given that difficult chain of events - shaky agreement. given that difficult chain of events are l difficult chain of events are looking forward, do we have a sense now given those numbers you are mentioning, could we see any more possible releases in the coming days? i think it does bring a moment of relief in what has been the darkest time in this region sadly in the years that i've been here. but remember the unprecedented scale of events that triggered all the heirs. the brutality of the attacks by hamas on october the 7th. the staggering civilian death toll on both sides. some 1200 people killed. 0n both sides. some 1200 people killed. on october the 7th. according to figures by the hamas run it industry, in the region approaching now 50,000 people killed in gaza. we have not seen events on this scale in living memory. beyond that, in such an atmosphere... the whole by arab countries to continue and deepen the cease—fire i think many here will think is in vain. because the israelis and hamas have made it clear they intend to fight on once this pause as the israelis call it is out of the way to achieve that objective of getting hostages released, prisoners released as far as hamas is concerned. i think all the momentum locally is heading towards a resumption of the war whenever the period of truce ends. it doesn't change the fact you have increasingly western nation starting to raise more concerns vocally about the civilian death toll. also arab countries really trying to push and create a sense of momentum around this truce to try to get it extended for much longer in a deeper cease—fire. for much longer in a deeper cease-fire.— cease-fire. our middle east correspondent _ cease-fire. our middle east correspondent tom - cease-fire. our middle eastl correspondent tom bateman cease-fire. our middle east _ correspondent tom bateman reporting from jerusalem and what has been a very eventful evening and stretching into night—time. thank you very much for your reporting. we can show you live images from israel. this is where we're expecting in a matter of moments those freed hostages, 13 israelis, four tight nationals who have been freed in that deal between hamas, we're expecting some to be arriving at the hospital in israel and we will continue to monitor that situation as we get new developments tonight. tens of thousands of israelis have been holding a rally with the slogans bring them back home is a demand the release of the more than 200 hostages still in captivity. in tel aviv tonight, streets thronged with the demand for every israeli hostage to be brought home from gaza. this gathering was called "50 days of hell." and a second group of israeli hostages, reaching the gaza border, delayed by hamas for hours, but now on the way to freedom. racing into his father's arms, 0had who was released yesterday. followed by his mother, keren, and his grandmother, ruti. three generations who were held hostage. ruti's husband still is. as 0had caught up with friends, his family said israel must free every last hostage. this was a belated birthday party. he turned nine in captivity. and crowded onto one bed — the ashers. "did you miss me," yoni asks, "did you think about daddy?" "i dreamt about going home," says raz, who is four. "your dream came true," he says, "we're going home soon." raz was held with her mother, doron, and baby sister aviv. in gaza it's time to count the cost of weeks of israeli bombardment. the ceasefire means palestinians have been able to return to jabalia in the north, the largest camp in gaza, or what's left of it. "we are unarmed," says mahmoud masoud, "we are civilians. "we don't carry weapons and we don't resist. "why have they destroyed our houses? "why are they killing our children?" footage has now emerged on social media of an israeli officer in gaza taking a different view of the destruction. "i dedicate this explosion to my princess, ella," he says. "today she's two." then he blows up a building. the israeli army has confirmed to the bbc that these are its troops in gaza. 0rla guerin, bbc news, tel aviv. the second bus—load of palestinian has arrived in the west bank. we want to show you live images. you can see scores of people in the streets in the west bank. we know that 39 palestinian prisoners were released this evening as part of that deal between hamas and israel. many of those prisoners, in fact all of the miners and women. we believe that those prisoners will be arriving for that you can hear celebrations, some of that honking for that you see many people in the west bank waving flags and driving through the streets. there are scenes clearly of joy as 39 through the streets. there are scenes clearly ofjoy as 39 people have been released in at second round of exchanges between the two sides, between hamas and israel. you can see the scenes live in the west bank as that next group, 39 women and children were released and that prisoner in hostage exchange for the weekend now bring you more and the situation in the west bank and those who were freed and a prisoner exchange. to our correspondent lucy williamson in beitunia and asked how people have been reacting to the news. yes today prison guards told him he was being taken otherjail for yes today prison guards told him he was being taken otherjailfor a court appearance 2a hours later he's back with his family near ramallah. 0ne back with his family near ramallah. one of the first prisoners to be released under israel's deal with hamas. mohammed was arrested in april and convicted by a military court of throwing molotov cocktails at israeli soldiers. his father said last night was the first time he did seen or spoken to his son in seven months. the reunion was indescribable, he said. his first word to his son as he met them off the bus... my love. mohammed told me he was dizzy with happiness as he stepped off the bus to meet his family. you spent seven months of your life... sense the attacks he said the only information inside the jail was new arrivals who he said sometimes arrived with broken teeth and large cuts to the head that were left untreated.— left untreated. translation: the next day they— left untreated. translation: the next day they took _ left untreated. translation: the next day they took out _ left untreated. translation: the next day they took out the - left untreated. translation: the next day they took out the tv - left untreated. translation: the next day they took out the tv and | next day they took out the tv and the radio, all communications were removed. we were totally isolated. they only gave us one portion of food between seven. we were always hungry. after the 30th of october they removed our blankets, it was freezing cold. israel couldn't do anything to gaza so they punished us. , ., , ,., anything to gaza so they punished us. , ., , , . anything to gaza so they punished us. , .., us. the israeli prison service at all prisoners — us. the israeli prison service at all prisoners were _ us. the israeli prison service at all prisoners were detained - all prisoners were detained according to the law and had the right to file a complaint. you were released because hamas took hostages women and children that were released yesterday in real two exchange of palestinian prisoners. how do you feel towards those prisoners?— how do you feel towards those prisoners? i releases of prisoners are being received by palestinians? i think as all palestinians _ received by palestinians? i think as all palestinians living _ received by palestinians? i think as all palestinians living under - all palestinians living under captivity because of an ongoing occupation for 56 years apart side and 75 years of colonialism it's a bit of a relief. but it will not be lasting. despite the fact that they are released back into society because israel remains a single authority and sovereign from the river to the sea. and rules by military dictate in racist apartheid regime, ellie of these palestinians are much more can be rearrested for being on the wrong side of the street, driving on a segregated road, digging beneath the ground for water to going to pray injerusalem without a military permit. so all of this is within a context with that i also want to highlight because of context for the audience that israel could have achieved this release, this exchange in the first week of its onslaught against the palestinians besiege in the gaza strip. it could have achieved it right before the ground invasion on october 27. right before the ground invasion on 0ctober27. it right before the ground invasion on october 27. it could have achieved it before the incursion of the al—shifa hospital. as we continue to talk about these exchanges, let's ask ourselves why are we insisting on political negotiations? we know that a military solution is not possible. we know israel's campaign against palestinians that they say is collective punishment is not enhancing their negotiating leverage as this could have been achieved in the first week. we must also remember the need to be accountability at this point in the fate of those palestinians now some 15,000 have been killed, who can never be brought back to life as a result of a lack of accountability that israel has been afforded. i want to get to the humanitarian situation in a moment. as a palestinian legal scholar, what more do we know about the prisoners here that were likely part of this exchange and what kind of charges might have been convicted of? israeli might have been convicted of? israel controls the — might have been convicted of? israel controls the gaza _ might have been convicted of? israel controls the gaza strip _ might have been convicted of? israel controls the gaza strip as _ might have been convicted of? israel controls the gaza strip as well- might have been convicted of? i"—ei controls the gaza strip as well as the west bank under military law for that military law is suspension of any civilian law. and therefore the ability to create new laws, apply it retroactively, to detain somebody without charge or trial known as the administrative detention, 2000 of them, some 8000 palestinians are held prisoner without charge or trial. it's a presumption of guilt rather than innocence. it's the inability to cross your accuser as well as just see evidence before you anybody brought arbitrarily before a tribunal and israel has 899.9% conviction rate of being in prison. there isn't really due process here. anybody that we call a prisoner is also a hostage, more or less within the system because of a lack of accountability, because of the martial law regime. amongst these as i mentioned our 2000 held without charge or trial, 200 our children, notably israel distinguishes its children, which it says are younger than the age of 18 but says that palestinians are only children up until the age of 16, not 18. all of this reflects a very racist colonial regime, much of this legal order is derived from british colonial rule between the institution of the palestinian mandate in 1922 and the establishment of israel in 19118. palestinians are literally waging a struggle against the colonial regime for which there is no accountability instead israel is being supported by those who should be holding them to our account. it’s those who should be holding them to our account-— our account. it's important to note that israel — our account. it's important to note that israel says _ our account. it's important to note that israel says all _ our account. it's important to note that israel says all prisoners - our account. it's important to note that israel says all prisoners were | that israel says all prisoners were legally detained under the law. just to get to that humanitarian situation, part of this deal as well includes aid into gaza, a pause in the fighting. do you think this deal has been effective in getting aid to the people that needed in gaza? from what we've heard _ the people that needed in gaza? from what we've heard and _ the people that needed in gaza? h...” what we've heard and understood there are less than the 400 trucks promised to go into the north. we also know that the israeli army according to sky news is actually sniping at those palestinians trying to return to their home a check on their kin. we know people are suffering from preventable disease, including cholera. no, none of the humanitarian aid suffices to do what is necessary, which is to end the siege and occupation was up and actually rehabilitate the situation. as your point, in the art and should know this, yes israel detain them all by law but this is an apartheid regime according to amnesty international as well as the harbour human rights clinic. anything according to apartheid, which is a rule based system, just asjim crow was a rule—based system can be comprised of a very cruel and unjust law. that is precisely... comprised of a very cruel and un'ust law. that is precisely. . .fi law. that is precisely... we're out of time. thank _ law. that is precisely... we're out of time. thank you _ law. that is precisely... we're out of time. thank you so _ law. that is precisely... we're out of time. thank you so much - law. that is precisely... we're out of time. thank you so much for i of time. thank you so much for sharing your perspective. before we go we want to leave you with live images looking at the scene... we don't have the pictures. thank you for watching. hello there. well, it's been a freezing start to the weekend, hasn't it? saturday morning we had temperatures down at minus eight in cumbria. meanwhile, in adam, also in cumbria, temperatures only reached one degree celsius during the afternoon. now at the moment we've got clear skies with scotland and the bulk of england and that's allowing a widespread frost to develop. those temperatures continuing to drop away. and so it's a very cold one. the temperatures probably in the countryside getting down to about minus six, minus seven again, this time northeast scotland having some much colder weather. you'll notice the frost melting away, though, across northern ireland, wales and south west england as we head into the first part of sunday. the reason for that is we've got cloud moving in to the west associated with this next area of low pressure and it's that cloud that really will lift the temperatures as it moves in off the atlantic. and so some damp weather moves into northern ireland. eventually we get some damp weather pushing into wales and south west england. the rain quite persistent, but probably not all that heavy. however, i think it really will be very cold. 0k, towards the end of the day. you might see temperatures climb to about nine or ten in the west, but that's at the end of the day, a very slow rise in temperatures. and for most of the day, we're a lot lower than that. i think scotland and a good part of central and eastern england should hang on to some bright or hazy sunny spells for most of the day. now through sunday night, it's a bit more rains come for northern ireland, england and wales. 0ur area of low pressure moves into the continent. we then get some cold air coming back in to the north of the uk. showers turning increasingly to snow across modest hills in northern scotland and still a lot of cloud further south. and for most, monday will be another cold day. temperatures quite widely again, around six or seven degrees below average for the time of year. and this cold weather looks like it's going to last to me a long time. at least a week, could be two weeks. why do i say that? well, even into next weekend, the weather pattern is very blocked with high pressure dominating across the arctic and the greenland area. and we continue to see these cold north to north—easterly winds. could there be some snow? well, we'll certainly see some snow in the showers affecting parts of scotland. but there are scenarios where weather systems could burn into the cold air and we see rain turned to snow elsewhere. problem is, the detailsjust aren't there at the moment. so it's a difficult week ahead for us forecasters. what i do know is it is going to stay cold throughout with some sharp frosts around and temperatures really struggling well below average. watch out for a mix of rain and maybe a bit of snow at times, too. hello everybody, a very warm welcome to talking business weekly, with me, aaron heslehurst. let's go and take a look at what's on the show. the world's biggest innovators are tackling the climate emergency. this year to prove point this is commercially viable, now the plan is to scale up. from the bottom of the sea to the air that we breathe, from the mountains of iceland to the plains of india. on this special edition of talking business, we're going to take a look at how the world of business is making its business to save the planet. and taking the battle for a cleaner climate into outer space, can the final frontier to help us breathe easier down here on earth?
