jails. israel says it still expects that to happen — but not before friday — and there will be a similar delay to the temporary halt in hostilities. hamas says there are still details to be finalised regarding the list of people to be exchanged. for now, the fighting continues — there was a series of explosions in gaza through the night. israel defence forces say they targeted more than 300 parts of hamas*s infrastructure. israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu says his country will continue to fight hamas until absolute victory is achieved. aid agencies are extremely concerned about the humanitarian situation in gaza. some trucks carrying supplies have been able to cross into the territory this week. but pictures like these — with people struggling to secure bottles of water in gaza — highlight how difficult conditions there are. we begin our coverage with this report from our middle east correspondent yolande knell injerusalem — a warning, it does include some distressing images. the continuing anguish. this was the day some israeli hostage families had hoped to see their loved ones again. but late last night there was news of a 24—hour delay, also affecting the release of palestinian prisoners. israeli reports say hamas and qatar, which is mediating, haven't yet signed the truce deal. children are supposed to be among the first israelis freed. hadas kalderon desperately wants her son and daughter back. they were snatched with her ex—husband on the 7th of october. i just want to hug my children, to kiss them, to protect them, to promise them that it will never happen again. that's all i want. i don't care about nothing. because my life has been broken apart. my life won't ever be the same again. and their life won't be the same. camping on the street, and crammed into public shelters like this un school, in gaza the wait also continues for a promised four—day truce. without enough food to go around, a pause is meant to clear a path for hundreds of lorries carrying goods, fuel and medical supplies. even then aid agencies have been warning much more needs to be done. and palestinians living amid the destruction are wary about any pause in fighting. "what use is this truce? people are being displaced either way. what benefit do we get?" asks 0mo ramy. "we want a complete ceasefire. we want a truce to stop the bloodshed. our children are lost." gaza keeps burying its dead, with more than 100 bodies in this mass grave. the coming days may bring quiet, but israel and hamas have said afterwards the war will resume. translation: i want to be clear. the war is continuing. we will continue it until we achieve all our goals of returning all our abductees, eliminating hamas, and guaranteeing after hamas, gaza is not to be controlled by a party that supports terrorism. and for now the bombardment of besieged gaza goes on, as it has for nearly seven weeks. both sides are standing by to see if a deal will hold up and bring different scenes tomorrow. yolande knell, bbc news, jerusalem. people have been gathering here in this square for weeks now, often the families of those hostages who have been holding vigils or sometimes protests against the israeli government's handling of the situation, feeling not enough has been done to bring loved ones home. it is a place that even today you see the israeli flags flying, the empty table with a place laid for each of the hostages being held. people are coming here particularly with anticipation for the deal they were expecting to be in place, they were expecting to be in place, they were expecting to be in place, they were expecting it now according to reports in the israeli media, for a ceasefire to be in place and the first hostages to be released from gaza. this has been delayed until tomorrow at the earliest. this has been delayed until tomorrow at the earliest. i've been speaking to lieutenant—colonel peter lerner, a spokesperson for the israel defense forces. i asked him when the pause in fighting would take place. we are in a continued state of combat today, this morning, as it continues, once we receive the instruction from the government to hold our fire, we will do so. we've not received that instruction as yet, and that is basically the situation that i can report this morning. i think it's important to note, yes, we continue our strikes against hamas wherever they are hiding. this is a brutal, merciless terrorist organisation that needs to be...the paradigm of their existence needs to change. we need to make sure they never wield the sword of death above our heads ever again. and when that cease fire does happen, it's a four—day pause in hostilities, we're told. what would that look like from the idf*s perspective? what will you be doing and not be doing during that time? i think it's important to understand that we have a very, i would say, questionable history with hamas and ceasefires. they never seem to hold their fire. so we will be in defensive positions, holding our positions, making sure that we are well defended, well protected, but also very vigilant in case any attacks originate from hamas, from the gaza strip, whether it's rockets or attacks against the forces on the ground. this is the reality we expect. as i said, unfortunately, we have bad experience with them. i would highlight that they have an interest — the prisoners, the convicted criminals and terrorists that are expected to be released in this framework — they have an interest to maintain their fire. unfortunately, i don't know what level of control they have over all of theirforces. and i'd be very, very cautious in taking anything they say for more than face value. i really don't trust them. well, that's particularly interesting. i mean, you talk about the fragility of it. what is the the level, would you say, for idf forces to begin to engage once again militarily with hamas even during that ceasefire period? we have to be very cautious. the forces will defend themselves, will take up those defensive positions. you can't expect us not to respond to their attacks, and obviously we will. we are determined to enforce and continue a operational pause, but not under fire. it would not be a unilateral operation, because if they don't, then then we won't... and if that does happen, how will you protect civilians? how will we protect civilians? i think your question... if they're expecting a humanitarian pause? the operational pause is precisely that — an operational pause. there's not supposed to be movement from south to north. the forces will be on the ground and there will be continued movement from north to south of the gaza strip. our efforts will be defensive, in essence, and we will continue to maintain those defensive positions. but we need to keep in mind, of course, the pause, the operational pause, the instructions for the operational pause need to come in and we need to have a time and date and we will know how to do that. until that time, we will continue to act against hamas wherever they are hiding. the spokesperson for the israel defence forces. some breaking news as well. british foreign secretary david cameron and israeli foreign minister to visit kibbutz beeri. david cameron said he wanted to come here himself to see the horrific nature of the attacks on the 7th of october, he said he had heard and 0ctober, he said he had heard and seen things that he would never forget. he also talked about the hopes for a humanitarian pause, as you head the idf talking about now, and he hoped that everyone involved in the agreement would make that happen. the israeli foreign minister thanked him for coming to israel. he said, we need to fight together. it is a global war that we all must fight together. let's talk to our security correspondent, frank gardner. let us reflect a little on arab leaders who are looking at this deal with interest. what do they make of what they had been hearing? i was lucky enough _ what they had been hearing? i was lucky enough to — what they had been hearing? i was lucky enough to go _ what they had been hearing? i was lucky enough to go to _ what they had been hearing? i was lucky enough to go to a _ what they had been hearing? i —" lucky enough to go to a roundtable meeting with arab and islamic foreign ministers who were in london. they have been in beijing and then france, they are touring the world to essentially press for notjust the world to essentially press for not just a the world to essentially press for notjust a temporary but a complete ceasefire. they do not want the war to resume at the end of this four or five day truce period. they were pretty united in their views. these were the foreign ministers of saudi arabia, egypt, palestinian territories, indonesia and jordan. they also said they were very clear that they content the horrific hamas attacks on october the 7th but said israel is going about it in the wrong way. if you had just the security approach to gaza, you are simply going to be kicking the problem further down the line. there has to be a longer—term solution, and the palestinian foreign minister was very angry, actually, with the way things are going. he said, look, gaza has been made uninhabitable by this war. he said that if you wanted to defeat a bad ideology, and by that he was referring to hamas, because he represents the palestinian authority, no friend of hamas. they were at war back into thousand 6—2007. he said if you want to defeat a bad ideology, you need a better ideology. and for that they needs to be a hope, a route to a sovereign palestinian state. there is not one at the moment. we journalists asked them, did they think that that route with this current israeli government, which has been called the most right—wing hardline government in israel's history? and they dodged the question and said, let us get to the ceasefire start at first. israel does not want a ceasefire because it does not want a ceasefire because it does not want a ceasefire because it does not think it has taken out hamas yet. it thinks that hamas will just regroup, rearm and attack them again. in hamas*s statement yesterday, they said they had their finger on the trigger. hone general assembly members, and over a billion people, they are of the view that the un security council is dysfunctional because it is failing to restrain the attacks on civilians in gaza. israel as we know has said they take great measures to protect civilian life. that does not really fit with the over 14,000 dead so far and to conduct a war in a built—up place. however hard you try to avoid casualties, you will have civilian casualties. look at the fight in iraq several years ago, it was flattened by coalition air strikes. the difference being that that was done with the acceptance and has been delayed and will not happen, we are told, before tomorrow. melanie ward is chief executive of the charity medical aid for palestinians. thank you forjoining us here on bbc news. 0ne thank you hostilities, how might that benefits the civilian population, will it be enough? the civilian population, will it be enou~h? , ., , ., ., ., enough? there is no question at all that because _ enough? there is no question at all that because infighting _ enough? there is no question at all that because infighting is _ that because infighting is necessary, but also insufficient given the scale of the humanitarian catastrophe on the ground in gaza right now. i spoke to staff in gaza, all of whom have fled their homes in recent weeks and they told me the first two things people in gaza want to do when the fighting breaks is to firstly check on their families, see who is alive, the horrific truth is that nobody knows even inside their own family who remains alive. that has been made worse because the communication systems had been switched off and people cannot speak to each of in gaza. people want to see who is alive, they want to uncover their dead. the scale of the devastation in homes, damaged or destroyed, 6000 children killed, means they are still many people under the rubble that people have not been able to reach. the scale, the numbers of dead people lying under the rubble, it won't be possible to recover all of those people in just four days. possible to recover all of those people injust four days. it possible to recover all of those people in just four days. it is important they are recovered so they can be buried and we have seen the horrific spectre of mass graves in gaza in recent weeks. we also need to get massive amounts of aid into gaza, we need food, water, medical supplies, huge amount of fuel so the sewage systems and water systems cannot run. it is really important that aid is able to reach the population in the north of gaza. there are many hundreds of thousands of civilians there, millions of patients in hospital, elderly people who cannot flee, including the parents of one of my own staff. those people had been denied food, water, medicalsupplies, those people had been denied food, water, medical supplies, fuel in recent weeks and it is essential it can reach them during this pause. briefly, we talk a lot when the rafah crossing open in a limited way to allow some of the injured and premature babies to cross into egypt about that happening. is that still going on on a regular basis? are people still able to get out of gaza for medical treatment? sometimes the can for medical treatment? sometimes they can leave. _ for medical treatment? sometimes they can leave, we _ for medical treatment? sometimes they can leave, we do _ for medical treatment? sometimes they can leave, we do not - for medical treatment? sometimes they can leave, we do not know - for medical treatment? sometimes i they can leave, we do not know from one day to the next when that will happen. what is clear is we cannot evacuate all of the injured, there are 33,000 injured, the majority women and children, and there are only six hospitals in gaza that continue to function. what we need is to get those hospitals back on the feet. they need medical supplies, to be safe, there will be field hospitals as well, but we need to support the existing health system. we also need, it cannotjust be a four day pause, we need huge amounts of diplomacy from world leaders across the globe to make this a lasting ceasefire. hopefully the parties are showing you they are able to negotiate. cannot see a return to the indiscriminate killing that has been taking place in recent weeks, it is hurting so many civilians, the majority women and children. we need politicians to step up, put politics first and make sure they are able to make this a lasting ceasefire.— lasting ceasefire. melanie, thank ou for lasting ceasefire. head of the medical team at the hostages and missing families forum. they saw their parents murdered, how do start recovering? it is very complex. and imagine the complexity of hamas and somebody else in hamas and then the red cross, and then hospitals and then the community... such a complex process just to get back to being human. they didn't have any control, those innocent people, when they were abducted and in captivity, so nowjust think about food. some may have severe medical problems that need to be cured first. some of them had chronic diseases as well. injuries that weren't treated properly. you need to look and see. we set the principles need to be professional, patient, and personal. each one of them will need tailor—made solutions for him or her, and look at the family, the families that had been released, and the larger family, those waiting. and we at the families forum are supporting the families forum are supporting the families at this difficult time, because it is an emotional roller—coaster. we will be there with our resilient medical teams, i have been here for six weeks now, and we will also be with the other families. we should remember, most hostages are not to be released unfortunately this week. the hostages need care and it is mandatory. all hostages will receive red cross visits and medical care, it is essential. and the other families of other hostages, we will be with them in their homes, in the square, in the family forums centre, they are happy for the others but it is still difficult for them and they are thinking about their loved ones. as he touched on there, you are going to be dealing with physical issues, physical medical issues but also the mental impact of notjust what they saw and experienced on the 7th of october, but all that time spent in captivity as well.- 7th of october, but all that time spent in captivity as well. yes, and we do not know— spent in captivity as well. yes, and we do not know what _ spent in captivity as well. yes, and we do not know what they - spent in captivity as well. yes, and we do not know what they know, i spent in captivity as well. yes, and i we do not know what they know, what they saw. imagine just to tell them what happened. there was genocide. some of them lost dozens of close friends and family members. how do you tell them? it is very sensitive and complex. some of them became famous. they are not used to it and now they can go, i spoke with some of the released hostages, she told me that wherever she goes, people want to speak and hug her. maybe she does not want to be physically hugged at the moment stop she wants... again, we need to give them the space, privacy, and to see what are their needs. there may be other needs, forforensic are their needs. there may be other needs, for forensic medicine are their needs. there may be other needs, forforensic medicine or intelligence, they need information, thatis intelligence, they need information, that is important for other hostages, but you must be sensitive to their needs. they need to be put in the centre and do what they need. again, it was something new. the healing process is very important. we should see how we treat the first ones, and then learn how to treat better the next ones. share ones, and then learn how to treat better the next ones.— better the next ones. are you confident _ better the next ones. are you confident everything - better the next ones. are you confident everything they - better the next ones. are you | confident everything they need medically will be in place? i am always worried in a sense - medically will be in place? i —n always worried in a sense that we need to check ourselves all the time. it is impossible to be 100% prepared, so we should not have this notion of, 0k, we need exercise... know, maybe they need something else. maybe they need their glasses, maybe they need more glasses and... may be for them, their orthopaedic shoes, or my favourite eyeliner for someone, maybe that is what they need. we need to be very sensitive and they may have triggers, may something like light. people told me the light was harmful for them, something like light. people told me the light was harmfulfor them, in hospitals there is strong light and also here also, we need to be sensitive. they come from darkness to light, maybe from a quiet place to light, maybe from a quiet place to a noisy place, and that is very, very challenging. we need to be professional, personal and patient. just some of the issues being faced by those released hostages. stay with us the date for this revolving story on bbc news. —— through the day. hello. pretty wild and windy day across parts of scotland today, but it's here we see the first big signs of weather change. yesterday on the moray coast, the north—east, temperatures reached 15, incredibly mild for this stage in november. just 7 degrees this afternoon. temperatures actually dropping through the day. and tomorrow there will be an added wind chill with it. it's this cold air, a pool of cold arctic air which is pushing southwards to all of us as we go through tonight and into tomorrow. temperatures actually dropping through the day. and tomorrow there will be an added wind chill with it. it's this cold air, a pool of cold arctic air which is pushing southwards to all of us as we go through tonight and into tomorrow. also affecting a good part of europe as well. but it's really confined to the northern half of the uk for today. just to the north of this bank of cloud and rain affecting northern ireland, parts of northern england through this afternoon. sunshine and a scattering of showers to the north of that, but temperatures actually dropping through the day with winds at 50, 60 miles an hour towards the far north—east with showers turning wintry over higher ground. mild but brighter in the south with some broken cloud. but here we will see some patchy rain and drizzle during the first half of tonight, gradually becoming confined to cornwall, the isles of scilly and the channel islands. still reasonably mild here but elsewhere a much colder night tonight, temperatures barely above freezing in parts of scotland and northern england. so, a chillier start to tomorrow morning. showers in the north of scotland, snow even to lower levels for a time, and those strong winds continue. elsewhere, we'll see a lot more sunshine compared to today. a bit more cloud in northern ireland through to parts of wales, running down into the west midlands. could produce the odd light rain shower, but most places will be dry with sunny spells, much colder than we have been used to, though, single figure temperatures and an added wind chill in the north and east making it feel closer to freezing, particularly across parts of north—east scotland. then as we go through to friday night and saturday morning, still strong winds down the eastern coast, stopping temperatures from dropping much here, but further west, lighter winds, clearer skies and a widespread frost to start saturday. but whilst it will be a frosty start to saturday it will be a dry, sunny and crisp one. light winds for many areas, still a bit windy down eastern coasts and the chance of one or two rain showers. most, though, will be dry. again, temperatures widely into single figures. noticing that chill compared to what we've had of late, but the upside is you'll have a bit more sunshine. that will lead into some frost and fog patches to take us through saturday night and sunday morning. but sunday, a cold day, but a cloudier one. outbreaks of rain pushing on across the western half of the country, maybe making it across some southern counties too, and temperatures struggling to rise. take care. this is bbc news, the headlines... hundreds of thousands of new arrivals to the uk — a blow in the prime minister's promise to slash immigration. the anti—immigrant
