late on friday. gaza's two main telecoms companies said mobile phone networks had been partially restored after receiving a delivery of fuel. our correspondent yogita limaye has been working with journalist majdi fathi in gaza — it includes the story of one family brought into al—aqsa hospital in central gaza, including a young child who later died. there are distressing images from the start. monday in central gaza... shouting tuesday... he cries wednesday... thursday... and today, another air strike, all in so—called safer areas, away from the north where israel is conducting ground operations and had asked civilians to evacuate. this family was bombed in deir al—balah. "we're being killed and no one is doing anything about it," this man shouts. abed is still breathing, in critical condition. doctors scramble to treat the boy. on the floor, by his bed, they check his father for a heartbeat. they can't hear it. his family in shock, still finding out... ..who*s been rescued, who's survived and who hasn't, from 30 members. this is their youngest. injured, but not seriously. the family had fled to deir al—balah for safety from zeitoun in the north. a bit later, brother ali is taken to identify the bodies. four of the family have been killed. little abed didn't make it. "we thought we'd come to a safe place "but no one is safe in gaza," ali says. these were four of thousands of gazans killed. "goodbye, my dear," his mother says. "you're with god now. you were such a good son." grief is one form of suffering in gaza. this is another. hundreds gather outside one of the few flour mills still running. the manager tries to pacify people. "we haven't eaten for two days," some in the crowd shout. translation: we've escaped| death but now are dying slowly because of a severe shortage of food, flour and basic needs. we are a family of eight. i bring discarded paper cups to keep my children warm. people are also struggling to find drinking water and there's not close to enough aid coming in for gaza's 2.2 million. all but a tiny handful of whom can't get out. yogita limaye, bbc news, jerusalem. earlier, a funeral was held in israel for noa marciano, a 19—year—old soldier taken hostage by hamas and found dead in a building next to the al—shifa hospital. families of the more than 240 people held hostage by hamas have been marching from tel aviv to jerusalem calling for them to be brought home. our senior international correspondent orla guerin sent this report from the funeral. an israeli hostage, held by hamas, home only to be buried. noa marciano was a soldier — she wasjust i9. the army says her body was found near al—shifa hospital in gaza. translation: we tried i everything to get you back. for a0 days we turned every stone and searched every path. today, we ask for your forgiveness. and no safe homecoming for another hostage, 65—year—old yehudit weiss. she too was found close to al—shifa according to the army. yehudit was a grandmother of five. her family has a message for benjamin netanyahu, the un and the red cross. such tragedies could have been avoided if we only had someone who really cared about all those kidnapped. bring them home now! there are about 240 hostages in gaza. their families and friends are marching towardsjerusalem, heading for the prime minister's office with one demand — bring them back, whatever it takes. the marchers have been on the move for days now. they want to keep their loved ones in the public eye. they want to keep up the pressure on the government. hopes have been raised of a deal that might bring some of the hostages home — but for now, all they have is the agony of waiting. i can't stop thinking about it. this is my days. these are my days. tagit zin has two much—loved nieces who are among the hostages. ella is eight and a keen dancer. 15—year—old daphna is into tiktok and make—up. hamas livestreamed the attack on their home on 7 october. theirfather, noam, in the black t—shirt, was killed, with his partner and her son, who were seated alongside him. tagit believes her nieces saw it all. she says it is clear in a picture of daphna in captivity issued by hamas. you can see the despair in her... ..face. you can see how she is despaired. do you have hope that they will come home? i know that they will come home. i know they will be back. but it takes too much time, and our government, they are the only ones that can stop this in this minute. for now, there's no deal, and the hostages are at risk — notjust from hamas, but from israel's air strikes on gaza. orla guerin, bbc news, jerusalem. with me is said shehata, from bbc arabic. we are hearing of airstrikes in gaza overnight, tell us what the latest is.— the latest is. there is more airstrikes — the latest is. there is more airstrikes in _ the latest is. there is more airstrikes in some - the latest is. there is more airstrikes in some area - the latest is. there is more airstrikes in some area of. airstrikes in some area of kindliness, the israelis were asking people to move away from the east of khan younis to go to the west, —— khan younis. the killing is increasing and it reaches now more than 12,000 people, including about 5000 child, and about 3300 women and 30,000 injured. so the death toll and danger people is always going with the israeli airstrikes. always going with the israeli airstrikes-— always going with the israeli airstrikes. and obviously the news this — airstrikes. and obviously the news this morning _ airstrikes. and obviously the news this morning is - airstrikes. and obviously the news this morning is israel | news this morning is israel promising to allow more fuel into gaza, what has the reaction been to that? it was accepted. — reaction been to that? it was accepted, welcomed - reaction been to that? it was accepted, welcomed by - reaction been to that? it was accepted, welcomed by the l accepted, welcomed by the humanitarian organisations, but they say it is not enough, because it allows only two tracts of fuel which is about 140,000 litres, they need about 160,000 litres per day in order to provide fuel for the trucks, to provide fuel for the trucks, to deliver aid, because they are in almost starvation because they don't receive food especially in al for medical compound. the fuel is needed urgently —— al—shifa. the fuel is needed urgently for people who are starving and with electricity and other areas of their daily life.— their daily life. what is the situation — their daily life. what is the situation in _ their daily life. what is the situation in the _ their daily life. what is the situation in the occupied . their daily life. what is the i situation in the occupied west bank because we are hearing more reports of violence there? since 7 october what happened with hamas and the reaction from the clashes is israel rated several towns and villages in the west bank and detained hundreds of people, even recently three palestinians attacked israeli soldiers at one of the checkpoints, the three palestinians were killed, at the hands of the israeli forces. so attention is increasing their, happened recently there is an israeli drone targeted the part of the palestinian authority base and killed five people. so there is tension there because people in palestine are feeling what is happening to people in gaza is unacceptable, so they tried to express their frustration, so with the gaza disaster is happening there, indonesia and brunei called in a summit for the pacific organisation to corporate troops in order to help the humanitarian efforts —— called for a truce. in order to help the humanitarian efforts in gaza.— to help the humanitarian efforts in gaza. ., ~ , ., efforts in gaza. thank you said shehata from _ efforts in gaza. thank you said shehata from bbc _ efforts in gaza. thank you said shehata from bbc arabic - efforts in gaza. thank you said shehata from bbc arabic for i shehata from bbc arabic for joining us on bbc news. let's get some of the day's other news now. an armed suspect has opened fire at a psychiatric hospital in the us state of new hampshire. police say a security guard was killed, before an officer returned fire, killing the attacker. police have not identified the suspect or a motive. a string of companies including disney, warners and apple have withdrawn their advertising from x — formally known as twitter. earlier, the white house said it was unacceptable that elon musk said a post on x — accusing jewish communities of pushing hatred against white people — was "the actual truth". finland has put up barriers at four of its border crossings with russia in an attempt to halt a surge in undocumented migrants. helsinki has accused moscow of deliberately channelling the migrants to the crossings in retaliation for it having joined nato, earlier this year. ajudge in colorado has rejected an attempt to bar former us president donald trump from the state's 2024 republican presidential primary. it ends a landmark trial over a lawsuit that argued mr trump's actions leading up to the 2021 capitol riot render him ineligible to hold office again. leaders of the asia—pacific economic cooperation, or apec, have concluded their summit in california by restating their commitment to a rules—based trading system underpinned by the world trade organisation. apec leaders also committed themselves to further integration of their free trade area. openai, the artificial intelligence firm behind the chatgpt bot, has sacked its ceo sam altman — after saying to have lost confidence in his ability to lead the company. the board said mr altman had not been "consistently candid with his communications", hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities. our technology editor, zoe kleinman, has more. this is such an extraordinary announcement, and the whole of ai community is really quite astonished and shocked. if you haven't heard of sam altmann and his company openai, you have probably heard of their most famous product, chatgpt, the viral ai chatbot that exploded onto the world, literally a year ago in two weeks time, the firm was gearing up for theirfirst gearing up for their first anniversary gearing up for theirfirst anniversary of the product which arguably changed the world. we don't know a lot about what has happened here, the board of openai says it lost confidence in mr altmann, it said it was worried he had not been consistently candid in his communications and they had questioned something about his honesty which begs the question, is there something he has or has not told them and somehow he has been caught out. i think a lot of people now are trying to scramble to work out what has gone on. he has posted on x, formerly twitter, and he said he had a good time at openai and is looking forward to what came next. i think it is pretty clearheaded not see this coming. just last week he gave a big speech where he was optimistic about the future of chatgpt and openai, was here in the uk at the beginning of the month at the world's first ai safety summit, he is very much part of the furniture and very powerful figure part of the furniture and very powerfulfigure in part of the furniture and very powerful figure in the whole of the west*s ai community. and i think all eyes will now be on what he does next and what comes out about why he suddenly and so dramatically has been fired. live now to george hammond, venture capital correspondent for the financial times. george, how much of a surprise was this announcement?- george, how much of a surprise was this announcement? well, i am one of— was this announcement? well, i am one of those _ was this announcement? well, i am one of those people - was this announcement? well, i am one of those people zoe - am one of those people zoe mentioned he was scrambling to find out what has happened here. it is hugely surprising. it has shocked silicon valley and i think it has shocked the wider ai community and anyone who has followed this company over the last year as they become a household name. we are starting to get some sense as to what happened, if not why it happened, and zoe alluded to sam's statement early in the day, and in the last half an hour has been another statement put out by him and greg brockman, co—founder, who was also semi—pushed out of the company and then decided to jump company and then decided to jump earlier today. and they have said they are still trying to figure out exactly what has happened. they are saying they were given almost no warning was going to happen, so a third co—founder who remains on the board of openai notified sam on thursday evening that he wanted to speak to him on friday at noon. during that conversation he let him know he would be leaving the company according to this tweet from greg brockman and greg brockman was given even less time, seven minutes before news broke at 12:30pm san francisco time. so when this happened, it caused enormous consternation, confusion, and we're still trying to figure out exactly why this happened. there is this wonderful phrase, consistently candid. we haven't yet passed what that means exactly. yet passed what that means exactl . g , , ., yet passed what that means exactl ., , , ., , exactly. just tell us a bit more about _ exactly. just tell us a bit more about sam - exactly. just tell us a bit i more about sam altman's exactly. just tell us a bit - more about sam altman's profile and how much a key profile cache character he was in this burgeoning industry of ai? he was the burgeoning industry of ai? he: was the key character. you go back a year and chatgpt is a year older than two weeks was to hear someone who was known in silicon valley, he has been a power play for seven or eight years but he was not widely known to the outside world. he is now somebody who has taken meetings with joe is now somebody who has taken meetings withjoe biden, rishi sunak, world leaders around the world. he has become a figurehead for a boom in artificial intelligence which is really the biggest technology boom to come out of silicon valley since mobile and before that the internet. he has been the ambassador and the key spokesperson for not only ai but the sector at large, which makes today's announcement even more shocking and surprising. 50 announcement even more shocking and surprising-— and surprising. so what does this mean — and surprising. so what does this mean for— and surprising. so what does this mean for openai? - and surprising. so what does this mean for openai? it - and surprising. so what does this mean for openai? it is l and surprising. so what does i this mean for openai? it is the ai platform most people would be most familiar with. what does it leave the company and its future?— its future? the company has lost two co-founders - its future? the company has lost two co-founders on - its future? the company has - lost two co-founders on monday, lost two co—founders on monday, and sam and greg played very important roles at this company. they were the public face. particularly in greg's case they were behind the products that has become so dominant in the sector, and openai still has chatgpt, it still has phenomenal technology and a huge number of consumers who have signed up to use that, so they are in a strong position, they have a very strong partnership with microsoft and huge investment, but it is impossible to say this has not rocked the company. openai was seeking an $86 million valuation in recent weeks, and whether or not it achieves that is now i think a bit of an open question. it is now being led by the former chief technology officer, she has been promoted to interim chief executive. they have lost two of their co—founders and two of their co—founders and two very important figures, and the community in silicon valley especially in intelligence but their own investors of openai were caught cold by this. i think it suggests we have a long way to go before we know where this company goes next. thank you, george hammond, venture capital correspondent for the financial times, venture capital correspondent forthe financialtimes, in venture capital correspondent for the financial times, in san francisco. thank you for joining us. francisco. thank you for joining us— the uk chancellorjeremy hunt is said to be considering cuts to inheritance and business taxes in next week's autumn statement. mr hunt had previously said any new tax reduction would be impossible but in a bbc interview yesterday he refused to rule them out. a treasury source insisted no final decision had been made. here's our political correspondent, ione wells. well, the chancellor is going to be spending the spring and mulling over which tax or spending plan to include in his autumn statement on wednesday. it comes after he received the latest independent forecasts on friday, painting a picture of where the uk's economy is at at the moment. now, there has been lots of speculation about tax cuts, which the chancellor is considering. certainly nothing has been confirmed yet, but the big speculation has been around whether he may cut inheritance tax or certain business taxes as well. he has, in an interview with the telegraph this morning, said that he wants to show people that there is a path to tax cuts, which i think is his biggest hint yet that this is certainly something on the table, compared to some of his previous language, where he has talked about making very difficult decisions and needing to be very careful about government spending in order to get debt and inflation down at the moment. now if he goes ahead, and i stress if, with an inheritance tax cut, it is likely to prove quite controversial. certainly there have been a lot of tory backbenchers pushing for this tax cut. it is quite unpopular with a lot of conservative mps and voters. however, he is likely to face opposition if so from critics and opposition parties who are arguing that it would unfairly benefit some of the wealthiest in society, given the relatively small number of people who end up paying it. that is because at the moment it is a 40% tax on any inheritance over a certain threshold. that threshold is £325,000 worth of assets or property. it goes up to £500,000, if a property. it goes up to £500,000, ifa home property. it goes up to £500,000, if a home is included in those assets. so those are the current thresholds, when it comes to inheritance tax. as i say, he is considering a cut to that, and possibly some business taxes as well, although nothing is confirmed just yet and we will hear more from him about his future plans on wednesday. spacex will attempt to launch their biggest ever rocket — starship — from boca chica, texas later today. it's their second attempt — the first try earlier this year ended in an explosion minutes after take off. elon musk says he wants to use the rocket to go to the moon and on to mars. our science editor rebecca morelle reports. waiting on the launch pad. will it be second time lucky for elon musk*s starship, the tallest and most powerful rocket ever built? this is what happened first time around in april this year. the rocket got off the ground successfully but a few minutes into the flight, it was time for the lower part to separate. instead, starship started tumbling, and then less. but it wasn't only the rocket that exploded. the launch pad was wrecked, too. i think they should not have taken that risk to try to launch on a flat launch pad that was made out of concrete. it literally blew up like a volcanic eruption, and there is a lot of speculation that may be the chunks of concrete blown out of the launch pad may have knocked some of those engines out. so we don't know to what degree the launch pad explosion contributed to the failure on the first flight attempt. starship stands 120 metres tall and has two main parts. at the bottom is the booster, which has a record number of engines - 33 has a record number of engines — 33 of them. above them is the starship spacecraft which can carry cargo or crew. what is unique is both components are designed to land, and be cleverly captured, making them fully reusable. it cleverly captured, making them fully reusable.— fully reusable. it is the scale ofthe fully reusable. it is the scale of the rocket. _ fully reusable. it is the scale of the rocket. the _ fully reusable. it is the scale of the rocket. the rocket - fully reusable. it is the scale of the rocket. the rocket is i of the rocket. the rocket is itself absolutely huge. it is a similar size of rocket like something like the saturn five rocket that went to the moon as part of the apollo programme but it is also a fully reusable programme, so that means it is massive, it can bring a huge amount of stuff into space and it can do it time and time and again and again and again, and that makes the cost of putting stuff into space are much cheaper. stuff into space are much cheaper-— stuff into space are much cheaer. , ., . cheaper. the plan is for tampa to return _ cheaper. the plan is for tampa to return astronauts _ cheaper. the plan is for tampa to return astronauts to - cheaper. the plan is for tampa to return astronauts to the - to return astronauts to the moon. it is an integral part of nasa's artemis mission but there is a lot of work still to do. they will need multiple successful launches and find a way to refuel in space will stop they will also need to work out how to land and lift off from the lunar surface. what will success look like? the space x philosophy is to go quick, fail often and learn fast, so don't be surprised if the rocket exploded again. hope is it will make it a bit further last time. rebecca morelle, bbc news. qualifying for this weekend's las vegas grand prix is due to get under way later. the first practice on the new street circuit lasted only nine minutes, after the ferrari of spain's carlos sainz hit a loose manhole cover. the session was cancelled for officials to check the other drains on the track. it's the first time in over 40 years that a grand prix has been held in the nevada desert city. the actor, david tennant, has returned as dr who for a bbc children in need sketch. dramatic music hello. the clip saw tennant once again as the time lord, accidentally crashing his tardis at the "genesis of the daleks" — the long—standing enemy of the dr. the scottish actor — who became the 10th dr in 2005 — is starring as the 14th dr for three anniversary specials later this year. the annual children in need fundraiser aired on bbc one on friday evening — and raised more that 33 million on friday evening — and raised more than 33 million pounds on the night — that's 41 million dollars. thank you for watching bbc news. stay with us for more headlines. hello, there. friday was a cold start for all of us across the country but it was certainly a day of contrasts. fog lingered in some places and that had quite an impact on the temperature — particularly in north east scotland with temperatures barely climbing above freezing by the middle part of the afternoon. it was a different story further south — some beautiful autumn sunshine to look out for and we had over seven hours of sunshine in parts of kent. but the weather story is set to change once again as we head into the weekend with this deep area of low pressure bringing some wet and windy weather with it. the isobars squeezing together, a blanket of cloud and rain pushing its way steadily east, so a spell of wet weather, particularly across south east england during the morning, slowly easing away to sunny spells and scattered showers into the afternoon, so certainly an improving picture across much of england and wales by saturday afternoon. mild with it, 14 or 15 degrees. a few scattered showers into northern england, more widespread through northern ireland and to scotland, accompanied by blustery winds. gales on exposed coasts here. but the temperatures certainly on the up, in comparison to friday. double figures. we're looking at nine to 12 degrees, generally, for scotland. now, as we move out of saturday into sunday, our area of low pressure just slowly drifts its way steadily eastwards, so that means plenty of showers spiralling around that low, and still strong winds, perhaps stronger winds down to the south. again, a relatively mild start, 7 to 10 degrees. a blustery start in the morning and that'll drive in plenty of showers from the west, so not everywhere will see those showers but they are going to be fairly widespread. perhaps drier interludes for scotland and maybe central and southern england as we go through the afternoon. temperatures likely to peak once again between 9 and 14 degrees. now, through sunday evening into the early hours of monday, we mightjust have to keep a close eye on this little front here. we could see a spell of very wet and windy weather across south west england for a time. once that clears away, however, high pressure is going to build across central and southern england as we move further ahead into the week. so, if you're after something a little drier, a little quieter, we will get that across england and wales. still the risk of some wet and windy weather at times further north and west. take care. this is bbc news, the headlines: israel agrees to allow two fuel tankers a day to travel into the gaza strip following pressure from the united states. the white house says this will primarily be used to distribute aid across the strip, but humanitarian agencies warn it is not enough amid rising fears of starvation. the openai board has ousted its ceo sam altman, saying they had lost confidence in his ability to lead the company. the board said that mr altman had not been "consistently candid with his communications", hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities. spacex plans a second test flight of its starship spacecraft in texas later today, after being delayed a day due to repairs. the first test ended in failure in april after the vessel exploded at altitude. now on bbc news, unspun world withjohn simpson.
