hello, i'm christian fraser. you're watching the context on bbc news. the hollywood actors union has called off its strike, which has caused major disruption to film and tv productions. to film and tv productions. the union says it's reached a tentative agreement with studios. welcome back. president biden has warned the united states will target any groups linked to iran's revolutionary guard corps after a strike on an arms depot in eastern syria wednesday which had been linked to earlier attacks on us bases. the pentagon says there have been a0 such attacks since the war in gaza began. what's more, we have video from the iran backed houthi forces in yemen. they claim to be of an american m09 drone being shot out of the sky. it further underlines the tensions in the wider region, where iran's proxies are threatening to expand the conflict. this is whatjohn kirby, the spokesman for the us's national security council, had to say in an interview with the bbc. we believe that the attacks on ourforces in iraq and syria, and our responses to those attacks, are separate and distinct from what is going on with israel and hamas. now, i can't speakfor the proxy groups and what is motivating them to increase their attacks on us, but i can tell you this — they have got a choice to make. if they are going to keep attacking our groups in iraq and syria, we're going to keep responding, and they're going to be responsible for those consequences. let's speak to retired major general and middle east expert, john wharton. good to have you weather is on the programme. these tracks the americans have carried out, what do we know about them and what they represent? == we know about them and what they re - resent? , we know about them and what they reresent? , , ~ , ~ represent? -- these strikes. i think first of all you _ represent? -- these strikes. i think first of all you have _ represent? -- these strikes. i think first of all you have to _ represent? -- these strikes. i think first of all you have to think- represent? -- these strikes. i think first of all you have to think about l first of all you have to think about the context here. you have local on the context here. you have local on the ground operations going on with hamas, and then what you have to do is take it in terms of the security of israel. what is really happening here is the strikes are trying to get out and encourage other actors tojoin the warand get out and encourage other actors to join the war and make get out and encourage other actors tojoin the war and make it more regional. when you make it more regional, you could the instability in the region, and then it becomes a national security interest to us from the united states' standpoint. but in this case, it is a very complex situation on the ground and i do separate these random missile attacks, they occurred long before the events that we are seeing right now with hamas, so i would separate those two actions. 50 now with hamas, so i would separate those two actions.— those two actions. so you don't put much store — those two actions. so you don't put much store in _ those two actions. so you don't put much store in what _ those two actions. so you don't put much store in what we _ those two actions. so you don't put much store in what we have - those two actions. so you don't put much store in what we have heard. much store in what we have heard from lebanon, from hezbollah that while there is a suggestion they wouldn't want tojoin while there is a suggestion they wouldn't want to join the war, but they would want to have read the israelis and perhaps the americans as well. the concern would be that if you have a spa, they could be a player, something could lead to unintended consequences. do you think some of these strikes could be linked to that —— could lead to that, to fire one across the bow was. i that, to fire one across the bow was. ~' . that, to fire one across also the intent - was. i think that is the intent from | hamas and it is also the intent that hezbollah has been attacking and shooting missiles into israel. again, ithink shooting missiles into israel. again, i think it is a bit of support for hamas but i don't want to pull the two together because it is a strategy for hamas to try to bring in other regional actors to try to counter israel on behalf of their cause. i try to counter israel on behalf of their cause-— try to counter israel on behalf of their cause. i want to talk, john, about an article _ their cause. i want to talk, john, read it because it really takes you into the mindset of hamas and what they were trying to do. i read the section, if i may. it says it was necessary from their perspective, this is quoting one of the members of the top leadership body, the seniorfigures, it was necessary to change the entire equation and notjust have a clash. i hope the state of war with israel will become permanent on all the borders and the arab world will stand with us. when you look at the picture today across the region, yes, the palestinians have suffered appalling casualties as a result, but has hamas already one? i don't think so, but has hamas already one? i don't think so. and _ but has hamas already one? i don't think so. and i— but has hamas already one? i don't think so, and i think _ but has hamas already action, of attacking israel is going to have more significant strategic effects that will lead to their detriment. i don't think any country in the world would accept harm to civilians and the killing of innocent civilians, so if your attempt was to gain world opinion and you are the political leadership of a country, i'm not so sure that will be in favour around the world. it's may in short time, lots of people paying attention to what is going on now, and they're trying to change the narrative to a geopolitical event, trying to gain world opinion and things of that nature, but i think the killing of innocent civilians is going to do more harm for the long term for the palestinians than benefits. let more harm for the long term for the palestinians than benefits.— palestinians than part of a prisoner swap in return for an israeli prisoner. because of that, he saw the value of taking israeli prisoners, and yes, in this article and suggest they had more success than they ever contract that had to change. the studios, the alliance changing the vocabulary in the last few days. basically, actors are seeking protection over a number of things, for example, away from the whole big movie stars, let's look at extras in crowd scenes. used to be you would get hundreds of people in a stadium, now, what had been happening recently was there was one person and they multiply that 100,000 times and that is your crowd scene. so trying to get work there. also, what happens your ai image in future, beyond your death. would it be used, will it be used in other media? this is what has taken the negotiation so long and a large part of why it is 118 days, this turned out to be the longest acting strike in hollywood history, because of the technology aspects. the specifics will be revealed tomorrow, there will be a board meeting at sag-aftra, and there will be a board meeting at sag—aftra, and once the board have gone over it, it will go to the members to approve. they have been a very united union and there was 98% vote for the strike in the first place. they have stuck together through this. fran drescher, their leader, occupying the position ronald reagan once held as hugh farris. the father of liverpool forward luis diaz has been released by the colombian guerilla group that kidnapped him 13 days ago. luis manuel diaz had been held by members of the national liberation army since being abducted in his home town of barrancas. our correspondent natalie pirks has more. after 13 long days, finally, the images his family were praying for. luis manuel diaz being checked by medics and then walked from a helicopter to head home after a team, including those from the catholic church, had met with the guerilla group holding him to negotiate his release. it was almost two weeks ago that luis diaz's parents were kidnapped at gunpoint at a petrol station in barrancas in north—east colombia. his mother was rescued that night, but his father was abducted. police and the military had focused their search on a hard to reach area on the border between venezuela and colombia. the group holding diaz, the national liberation army, known as the eln, had called his kidnap a mistake and agree to release him, but it wasn't until today that a team met with rebels to bring diaz sr home. translation: it has truly been an anxious few days, _ but i always had faith in god this had to happen in the best way. our family does not deserve an outrage of such magnitude. for a country well versed in kidnappings, this story has been big news, not least because it involves a famous player. the colombian government had been in the midst of negotiating a road—map to peace with the eln. last week, after scoring a crucial goal, luis diaz wanted just one thing — freedom for papa. now finally, he has his wish. after hearing the news of his father's release, diaz started for liverpool in their europa league game in toulouse, but his team suffered their first defeat of the competition this season amid more var drama. the french side was always ahead, but liverpool dominated towards the end and diogojota pulled it back to 3—2 in the 89th minute. they then thought they'd equalised seven minutes into added time throughjarell 0uansah, but the video assistant referee ruled it out for a handball in the build—up. so liverpool will have to wait to qualify for the knockout stage. despite winning neither of their first two games in the europa league, brighton have put themselves in a strong position to qualify with two straight wins, both over ajax. this is brighton's first european campaign. and they've faced a dutch side having a rare difficult domestic season. ansu fati scored the first and set up the second for simon adingra in a 2—0 win in amsterdam. west ham united are on course to beat olympiakos 1—0 at the london stadium. the home fans had to wait until the 73rd minute for lucas paqueta to open the scoring. they lost the reverse fixture a fortnight ago, ending their english record 17—european—game unbeaten run. rangers recorded another win under new manager phillipe clement, todd cantwell scoring what proved to be the winner in a 2—1victory over sparta prague at ibrox. a win will move them second in their group. meanwhile in the conference league, aston villa 2—1 over az alkmaar, but aberdeen's 2—2 draw with paok means they can't qualify for the knockout rounds. new zealand's five—wicket win against sri lanka has put them on the verge of the cricket world cup semifinals. the victory was comprehensive enough to improved their net run rate, making it very hard for pakistan or afghanistan to overtake them for a place in the top four. here's our sports correspondentjoe wilson. the bengaluru pitch was prepared for 100 overs. it didn't get close. sri lanka started fast and lost wickets quicker. crucial perera rapid 51 fell to mitchell santon's hands. a strong combination. sri lanka needed the bravery of their tail end of yourface 91 balls, including this one. ouch. he batted on to make 38 not out. still, new zealand's only needed 172 to win. devin conway didn't hang around. here, another six poor games which are about to finish. but that is all for now. hello. that weekend isjust finish. but that is all for now. hello. that weekend is just around the corner and it could be cooler but quieter. more details on that in just a moment, but for friday, we still have some showers around, and there will be a real nuisance first ring in the morning across wales and south—west england, driven along by some strong to gale force gusts of winds on exposed coasts. the keys news that will push those showers through at some pace moving south of the m4 corridor in the early morning and probably claiming the kent coast before lunchtime. behind it, quite a glimpse of some sunny spells coming through. the winds still coming from a northerly direction that will drive some showers across exposed coasts of scotland and northern ireland and may be running down the irish sea. temperatures will be more subdued of late with 12 degrees of the overall high. —— more subdued than of late. then looking at the weekend, it looks likely that saturday will be mostly dry with some rain around on sunday but into the west, and it will take its time. frost and paul could also be an issue. with this little ridge of high pressure on saturday, hence the white starts. —— frost and fog. temperatures will be struggling a little but there will be plenty of sunshine and early—morning fog will lift, sunshine coming through and high speaking again between six and 11 celsius generally across the country. now, as we move out of saturday into sunday, that frontal system starts to put in from the atlantic and it will take its time in doing so but it will throw in a little bit more moisture into the atmosphere, so there is a greater chance of some more dense fog which could linger, so early on sunday morning, if you are heading out for remembrance day services, it is worth bearing in mind it could be chilly and murky. widespread fog with some of that pretty stubborn to clear away, and if that does happen, the temperatures will be impacted. —— for remembrance sunday. there will be some went out to the west as well with highs of six to 11 degrees out again. as we head into monday and tuesday, we are back to what south—westerly wind and more frontal systems putting in from the atlantic, which means it will get that little bit milder once again, but unfortunately, there will be showers or longer spells of rain returning for most of us. that is it. have good weekend. —— have a great weekend. tonight at ten... rishi sunak under pressure to fire the home secretary, after she defies
