it is very unusual for a home secretary to criticise the police in public and it has emerged that the article was not cleared by no 10. suella braverman said that what she calls "pro—palestinian mobs" are being "largely ignored" while right—wing protesters are met with a stern response. she questioned whether the metropolitan police are playing favourites in the way they deal with protests. here's our political editor chris mason. those in charge here at the home office command one of the great offices of state — home secretary. the latest tenant here, suella braverman, approaches thejob with a bluntness unlike any of her predecessors. writing in the times about the pro—palestinian marches, she says... is suella braverman onto something when she claims the police might be biased? this former senior policeman who now works for a right—leaning think—tank says possibly yes. i think it's a really, really tough one for the police. i think the key question here is, who are they listening to, who are they talking to? and so could the police be biased almost by accident? potentially. but the key question is, who are they getting advice from and what is the nature of that advice and what is the bargain that's being struck between the police and the protest organisers? so close, yet so far apart — look at their body language the other day. a penny for what it would look like now. rishi sunak*s spokesman said no 10 had not signed off suella braverman*s article. in other words she has undermined his authority. and then there is the increasing frequency of her saying stuff that steals the limelight. the wind of change that carried my own parents across the globe in the 20th century was a mere gust compared to the hurricane that is coming. and here is how she describes the pro—palestinian marches. to my mind there's only one way to describe those marches, they are hate marches. and she said some homeless people live in tents as a lifestyle choice. opinions and language that divide — divide the country, divide her party. suella's a friend of mine, and one of the things i know is that being home secretary, having seen a number of other friends do the job, is a tough and pressurised job. but do you agree with her? well, again, iwould not want to interpolate myself into that conversation. i think the question really is for the prime minister. he must know that this isn't the way in which a home secretary should behave. he's got a home secretary who is out of control and he is too weak to do anything about it. the job is not finished yet, there's still a lot more to do. well, it might be, you know. what does rishi sunak do next? and is suella braverman*s critique of the police reasonable? chris mason, bbc news, at westminster. daniel sandford, our home affairs correspondent, is with me now. is there any truth to what the home secretary says?— secretary says? first of all let's look at what — secretary says? first of all let's look at what allows _ secretary says? first of all let's look at what allows a _ secretary says? first of all let's look at what allows a police - secretary says? first of all let's. look at what allows a police chief to ban a protest, under the law, the head of the metropolitan police can, with the permission of the home secretary, ban a demonstration if you think there is a risk of it resulting in serious public disorder. over the last month there has been a number of quite big pro—palestinian marches, and the disorder that has resulted from them has been relatively minor, so, some art rallyjust has been relatively minor, so, some art rally just felt has been relatively minor, so, some art rallyjust felt he didn't have the evidence to push for a ban on saturday's demonstration. but there have been bounds on political demonstrations in the past, between 2010 and 2012, the far right english defence league, or edl, had a number of protesters bound, and that has resulted in some people including suella braverman accusing the police of bias. is it one rule for the left and another rule for the right? the difference with the edl demonstrations is, there had been a number of demonstrations before that which had resulted in quite serious disorder, there had been basically clashes between the edl and antifascist protesters, and police say that therefore they did have evidence to seek a ban in those cases and certainly the former chief inspector of constabulary, sir windsor, has said that he does not see any buyers this week. the other thing that's — see any buyers this week. the other thing that's about _ see any buyers this week. the other thing that's about a _ see any buyers this week. the other thing that's about a has _ see any buyers this week. the other thing that's about a has referenced l thing that's about a has referenced in her article is how during the covid pandemic there was a difference in the policing of the black lives matter demonstrations, and the anti—lockdowners is. find and the anti-lockdowners is. and that is a bit _ and the anti-lockdowners is. and that is a bit more _ and the anti—lockdowners is. fific that is a bit more uncomfortable for the police because the statistics clearly show that far more people were arrested for breaching the covid regulations during the anti—lockdowners is down during the black lives matter marches, which happened at around the same time. and then of course there was those allegations that police were showing bias by taking the no on those demonstrations. i think you can only say that the black lives matter demonstrations were slightly unique because of course the target of those protests were the police themselves. rib—tickler can go back to westminster now and talk to chris mason. so, the home secretary is under a lot of pressure, can she survive this? that is the big question tonight, for two reasons, firstly, her increasing frequency to leave the jaws of her colleagues on the carpet with what she says. it is worth saying that there are others who agree with her sentiments. and then there is dispersion of her undermining the authority of the prime minister. imagine trying this in your own workplace, you are asked to do something by the boss, you don't do it, you undermine them, you humiliate them, you who mediate them publicly. doesn't usually help enhance your prospects ofjob security. so, rishi sunak has a big decision to make. does he keep her and allow critics like keir starmer tuesday that that shows that he is weak, does he get rid of her and create a martyr on the backbenches? it feels tonight like things are coming to ahead, perhaps with a wider ministerial reshuffle expected soon. , a, ,., wider ministerial reshuffle expected soon. , ., ~ the chief executive of mcdonald's in the uk is to be questioned by mps, over allegations of a toxic workplace culture at the restaurant chain. it follows a recent bbc investigation in which more than a 100 current and recent staff alleged sexual assault, harassment, racism and bullying. our employment correspondent zoe conway reports. ed is studying for his a—levels. he started a newjob at mcdonald's at the beginning of the year. he says that very soon, one of the senior managers at the store repeatedly pestered him for sex. ed was 16. this happened in front of others when he would pass it off as banter. but then, behind closed doors, in the fridge or the crewroom, or the stockroom, when no—one else was there, he would very much give the impression that he was being absolutely serious. the harassment went on for several months, until ed quit in april. i would get really upset about going into work and i would cry a lot before my shifts. and...yeah. injuly, a bbc investigation revealed that more 100 current and recent mcdonald's employees alleged a toxic culture of sexual assault, harassment, racism and bullying at the company. steve reid contacted the bbc injuly about what he said was a sexist and bullying culture at the store his daughters worked at. liv decided to quit at the beginning of the summer. she says one of the senior managers was openly racist about a new employee. there was a member of staff, fairly new to the store, about two or three weeks in, and she was sikh, and there was a comment made about how it was her type of people that bomb us. you're still working there. yeah. has it changed since liv left? it's exactly the same. the behaviour is still as she left, exactly the same. it hasn't changed. in a statement, alistair macrow, the ceo of mcdonald's uk and ireland said... mcdonald's prides itself on employing one of the youngest workforces in the country. its critics say it's failing in its duty to keep them safe. zoe conway, bbc news. a 14—year—old boy has appeared in court accused of murdering another teenager. alfie lewis, who was 15, was attacked in the horsforth area of leeds on tuesday at around 3pm as pupils were leaving two nearby mortgages were in arrears betweenjuly and september, up by 18% on the same period last year. but repossessions remain very low as lenders say they want to keep people in their homes. the latest nhs waiting list figures show around one million people in england are now on more than one waiting list for treatment with the total backlog reaching almost eight million. our health editor hugh pym is here. yes, the overall nhs waiting list in england in september was 7.77 million — another record high — that's waits for operations, procedures and appointments. and that covered 6.5 million patients — some have been waiting for more than one treatment. there've been predictions the numbers could keep on rising till next summer. some hospitals though are working hard to cut their backlog. you don't look any different the day you came back from surgery. ken is back at huddersfield royal infirmary, meeting staff who treated him. he had surgery for bowel cancer, and was the first to be operated on with a new surgical robot injune this year. the technology can mean less intrusive surgery, which is betterfor the patient. they've cut waits of more than a year to just a few dozen. it's all part of a surgical hub where resources are focussed just on planned treatment. by protecting the elective beds, by ring—fencing them, that makes it harder to deal with other aspects of care, but the teams have been really involved in making sure that those elective beds are protected, and it shows what can be done with existing infrastructure. it doesn't necessarily need a new buildig or new technology, it can be done with what you have got. but staff here and across the service are under no illusions about the continuing challenge of tackling waiting lists. but performance in a&e departments last month in england was the worst so far this year, more than 660 thousand had to wait over four hours after arriving. and the worry is that those figures were for october — with one think tank warning of a perfect storm of pressures heading into winter. thank you. the england football manager, sarina wiegman, has said it's only a matter of time until a woman takes charge of a professional english men's team. the lionesses head coach has been speaking to our sports editor, dan roan, about grief, success, and succession. england! having masterminded unprecedented success for the lionesses, sarina wiegman*s established herself as one of most respected coaches in international sport. and she told me it is now inevitable a woman will take full—time charge of a men's team in the professional english game for the first time. in football, i think it's just a matter of time. we are not used to having women coaching men at the highest level, and i think that will happen. i'm not sure how long that will take, but i think it would be good too. do you any in future you will go back in to men's football? well, my thoughts now, are totally not in men's football, my thoughts are with the women's game and what we can do, and i really love myjob here, for the fa and with england. having won the euros last year, an emotional wiegman kissed a bracelet belonging to her sister, who tragedy died from illness a few weeks earlier, a loss she has written about in her autobiography. was that victory the perfect way to pay tribute to her? for me, definitely, yeah. for me personally, that was such a big thing. her passing away was so short before the tournament, that actually she was there all the time with me. it is more than a year now, but it is still very short, it feels very short. it is like she is in my mind every day. we were really close. she was notjust my sister, she was my best mate too. so yes, she will always be there. it's heartbreak for the lionesses. since losing the world cup final, england have suffered a slump in form, leaving hopes of british qualification for next year's olympics hanging by a thread. do you feel that is having an impact on your team now? players are different too, so some are really, you know, they are still so disappointed about that final, and that takes time also, but the life of the players changed so much, the expectations changed a lot. you want to be at every major tournament, so the olympics we want to go too, so we are going to everything what is in our control to make that happen. remarkably, wiegman*s teams have reached the finals of four major tournaments in a row. her focus now, trying to ensure she leads out team gb in paris next summer. dan roan, bbc news. films and tv series have been delayed, hollywood stars have stayed away from premieres and award ceremonies — but now, after a four month strike, actors are expected to resume work after their union agreed a tentative deal with hollywood studios. the action — combined with a separate writers' strike — stopped most film and television production. the actors* union says the agreement resolves disputes about streaming revenue and the use of artificial intelligence. david willis sent this report. cheering. euphoria greeted news of a breakthrough in hollywood's longest ever strike involving film and tv actors, a dispute that has brought production to a stand—still. all: union power. it has been really challenging, you know, we have a lot of our strike captains on the line that have been close to eviction and have had their only meal of the day while they are striking, it is such a feeling - ofjoy and of triumph over adversity, and not quitting. the breakthrough means production can now resume on the superhero franchise blade... and your blood is the one they seek. ..as well as box office blockbusters such as the mission impossible series. and british actors such as anna mulvoy—ten, who is also a member of the american union, can finally look forward to going back to work. we can go back to telling for stories and doing what we love. i don't think anyone loves going to work as much as an actor so we are as well as a greater share of the profits from streaming programmes, at issue in this dispute was greater protection against the use of their likeness, through the use of artificial intelligence, orai. president biden welcomed the breakthrough, saying it allows the entertainment industry to, as he put it, continue telling the story of america. david willis, bbc news, los angeles. it's thursday, so question time is on tonight. here's fiona to tell us what's coming up. has suella braverman finally gone too far? there are calls for her to be sacked after she's accused the police of political bias. question time is live in llandudno on iplayer at 8pm and on bbc one after the 10 o'clock news. time for a look at the weather. here's louise lear. .hi . hi thrsm best of the weather west, some of them can move further inland, now as we go through the rest of the night, most of the showers will focus out towards wales and south—west england. clearer skies in scotland and northern ireland. here we could see a touch of frost and fog. here it will be chilly, temperaturesjust of frost and fog. here it will be chilly, temperatures just below freezing. chilly in the north, wet start out to wales and the south—west, with these weather fronts, it will be windy as well as the isobars squeeze together. so a rash of showers first thing, across wales and south—west england, with gale force gusts of wind. that will push the showers through at quite a pace south of the m44 corridor during mid—morning clearing from the kent coast. we will see some sunshine coming through, no tatty a bad day in prospect for many. a brisk northerly wind driving in shower on the exposed north coasts of scotland, northern ireland, may down through the irish sea and temperatures a bit subdued in comparison the recent days, looking round seven to 12, but into the weekend, high pressure builds, albeit briefly. this will bring rain late on sunday, on the whole a misty foggy start on saturday, but not bad, there will be sunshine coming
