good evening. there was a minute's silence in tel aviv today where a giant table was set for 240 people — the number of hostages, israelis, and foreigners still being held inside the gaza strip. a minute's silence amid four weeks of intense bombardment and reprisals. the israeli defence minister yoav gallant says israeli troops are now "in the heart of gaza city" with one target in mind — hamas. their infrastructure, their commanders, their bunkers. a month on from the terrible events of october 7th, gaza city is now cut off. the pictures show hundreds of palestinians, perhaps thousands on the move, most of them on foot. and many of them trying to get to the south, across front lines. not that the south is the safe zone, there were dozens were reported killed by israeli air strikes in the cities of khan younis, rafah, and deir al—balah, which is well south of gaza city. the pressure is mounting for a humanitarian pause. barely 30 trucks made it in yesterday. but for now, it is being resisted by the war cabinet, and the israeli prime minister who says force is the only answer. well, there will be no cease—fire, general cease—fire in gaza without the release of our hostages. as far as tactical little pauses, and our here, and i were there, we've had them before. i suppose we'll check the circumstances in order to enable goods, humanitarian goods to come in, or our hostages, individual hostages to leave. but i don't think there'll be a general cease—fire. it's not that i don't think — i think it will hamper the war effort, it'll hamper our effort to get our hostages out, because the only thing that works on these criminals and hamas is the military pressure that we're exerting. the israeli government believes there are 240 hostages in gaza — four have been released, one israeli soldier was freed. hamas claims that they do not hold all those who were kidnapped on october 7th — a statement that must be treated with some caution. there are other groups operating in gaza. but now, we are into that part of the battle where the israeli troops are moving into the tunnels. today, israel's bombing raids have itensified. as well as those killed in the city of khan younis, in southern gaza, further north, israeli troops have encircled, gaza city, the main base of hamas. from jerusalem, our correspondent jeremy bowen sent this report. hamas many innocent civilians also there in gaza and they shouldn't suffer, but there needs to be something radical with the terrorists because if not, they will be back. they will get the weapons again and
