as real*s military has struck an ambulance, they said it was being used by hamas, they accuse hamas of using ambulances to transport weapons. we'll tell you what has come out of those meetings, this as the leader of hezbollah gives a speech praising the hamas attacks saying the possibility of war is realistic. israel says its troops in gaza, are engaged in face—to—face combat with fighters from hamas. the israeli military says its troops have now completely encircled gaza city, in the north of the territory, almost four weeks since the start of this war. the us secretary of state, antony blinken, has been back in tel aviv as washington increases the pressure for a humanitarian pause. meanwhile, the leader of hezbollah, like hamas a proscribed terrorist organisation, has spoken from a secret location. hassan nasrallah praised the hamas attacks and said the possibility of "total war is realistic". more foreign nationals have been getting out of gaza at the rafah crossing point into egypt. 124 british nationals are on the list of people who are being allowed to leave. the hamas—run health ministry in gaza says more than 9000 people have been killed in the strip since october the 7th, after hamas killed ili00 people in the attacks in southern israel. in a moment, we'll be hearing from our correspondent in beirut, but first, this report by our international editorjeremy bowen. it begins with the aftermath of an attack on an ambulance outside gaza's largest hospital. the hamas—run health ministry says an ambulance convoy was hit and dozens were killed and injured. israel says it struck an ambulance, saying it was being used by a hamas unit. it contains images you may find upsetting. around 4:00 this afternoon, many people were killed very close to shifa, gaza city's main hospital. the health ministry, controlled by hamas, said israel attacked a convoy of ambulances. thousands of civilians have been sheltering at shifa, hoping it would be safer. israel says hamas has a command bunker under the hospital. more dead civilians on al—rashid street, one of only two roads south, where israel says civilians must go to be safe. the bbc has located the video to a stretch of road seven kilometres south—west of gaza city. the man is saying, "oh, god, a little girl. woman, a girl." this doctor says he was shot at by israelis in the same place yesterday. he says over a stretch of 1.5 kilometres, snipers were shooting at the cars. they had a donkey cart. the donkey was cut to pieces, along with the cart and everyone on it. this is ibrahim assalia, a british doctor stranded without power, with his family in northern gaza. dr assalia, from north london, was told by the foreign office only to risk the coast road in un or aid agency cars. antony blinken, the us secretary of state, returned — hoping to ease the pressure on gaza's civilians. good afternoon, everyone. we are absolutely focused on getting hostages back, and getting them back to their families in safety, and we believe that, among other things, a humanitarian pause could help that effort. but, after their meeting, prime minister netanyahu said there would be no ceasefires until hamas released its hostages. in beirut, lebanon's capital, supporters of the iranian—backed militia, hezbollah, rallied to hear their leader, hassan nasrallah, repeat threats that the war might spread. "the concern," he said, "is that this front might tumble into a wider war, it is a real possibility and the enemy should make every allowance." back in gaza, this is what's left of maghazi refugee camp. it's in the south, where israel is telling palestinian civilians to go to escape danger. but there are only bad options at the moment — for gaza's endangered people, and for diplomats who want to stop this war escalating. jeremy bowen, bbc news, jerusalem. joining me now from southern lebanon is our middle east correspondent hugo bachega. and let's talk a little bit more about that speech from the hezbollah leader a little earlier. people were gathered in the street*s, weren't they, it to listen to it. is there a little bit of relief after hearing what he had to say? so hezbollah tried to frame _ what he had to say? so hezbollah tried to frame this _ what he had to say? so hezbollah tried to frame this speech - what he had to say? so hezbollah tried to frame this speech as - what he had to say? so hezbollah tried to frame this speech as an l tried to frame this speech as an important moment here and there were a number of screenings across the country, the largest screening here in a southern suburb of beirut, which is a hezbollah stronghold. thousands of people were there with hezbollah flags and palestinian flags, and also flags of iran. he said that all options were on the table, that there was a real risk of this war is spreading across the region, he said that the only way to prevent this from happening was to stop the war in gaza. he also said that his—brother—word—mack*s action were determined by... in lebanon. what was interesting he said he didn't make a declaration of, did not declare war on israel. and he also did not give any indication that this conflict is going to escalate. we've been talking for weeks about these cross—border attacks from hezbollah in southern lebanon and the israeli military. this has raised fears that this violence could spread and limit on would be dragged into the conflict. people in lebanon were watching very closely to what he had to say but also officials in israel and obviously in washington, because they had been warning hezbollah and also iran against escalating the situation here. he said the group wouldn't be intimidated by those warnings, but people are relieved to hear tonight that there was no indication that the group has repaired, at least for now, to escalate its cross—border attacks against israel. escalate its cross- border attacks against israel.— against israel. 0k, we'll leave it there, against israel. ok, we'll leave it there. thank— against israel. 0k, we'll leave it there, thank you _ against israel. 0k, we'll leave it there, thank you very _ against israel. 0k, we'll leave it there, thank you very much, - against israel. 0k, we'll leave it. there, thank you very much, hugo pechanga there for us in beirut. with me now is hilal khaslan, a professor at the american university in beirut and author of hezbollah: a mission to nowhere. hejoins us from sidon in lebanon. we're just hearing what hugo made of that speech, what was your reaction when you heard it? iirrui’eili that speech, what was your reaction when you heard it?— when you heard it? well it was a clear statement _ when you heard it? well it was a clear statement that _ when you heard it? well it was a clear statement that he did - when you heard it? well it was a clear statement that he did not i clear statement that he did not want to escalate, and he made it very clear from the beginning to escalate, and he made it very clearfrom the beginning of to escalate, and he made it very clear from the beginning of the speech when he exonerated iran and hezbollah from any responsibility for that attack on october seven, and he said we knew nothing about it. and you know, something significant about his lack of interest in escalation, in his previous addresses and statements, he used to say that hezbollah would open a front against israel should they cross the red line which he never defined. today he did not issue an ultimatum, he did not state when he would enter the war. but even though he said that escalation into a full war is, is realistic, judged by his statements, judged by his—brother—word—mack*s behaviour, i am inclined to assume that war is not realistic.— am inclined to assume that war is not realistic. yet, although he did seem to leave _ not realistic. yet, although he did seem to leave the _ not realistic. yet, although he did seem to leave the options - not realistic. yet, although he did seem to leave the options open, l seem to leave the options open, didn't he? well because he has no indication to _ escalation here? well because he has no indication to escalate _ escalation here? well because he has no indication to escalate because - escalation here? well because he has no indication to escalate because he i no indication to escalate because he understands the consequence, and right after his speech is really an prime minister and said it should hezbollah open a front against us are retaliation would be relentless and hezbollah could never imagine how we are going to respond. i how we are going to respond. i suppose the memories of the last four and 2006 is still fresh in their minds, people are also very aware of how bad the economy and is, it has broken many people. a lot of people would've been voicing those concerns to him. where do you think departure has come from the most in terms of this of things?— terms of this of things? excellent, that's an excellent _ it come from elsewhere? excellent, that's an excellent question. - it come from elsewhere? excellent, that's an excellent question. now, i that's an excellent question. now, pressure came from every direction. iran, and decide whether hezbollah can go forward or not. iran is not interested in war against israel. that's one thing. hezbollah understands the consequences of war against israel and he does not want to bear the consequences of such a war, even in 2006, hezbollah did not really planned to go to war against israel. all they did back then is grab, i mean to capture two or three israeli soldiers and exchanged them with lebanese prisoners, because hezbollah at the time was under massive pressure, hezbollah citizens do not want war. the majority of lebanese do not want to confrontation with israel, and you cannotjust confrontation with israel, and you cannot just leave the confrontation with israel, and you cannotjust leave the country confrontation with israel, and you cannot just leave the country to disaster. he cannotjust leave the country to disaster. , ., , , ., disaster. he seemed to suggest that the role of the _ disaster. he seemed to suggest that the role of the moment _ disaster. he seemed to suggest that the role of the moment was - disaster. he seemed to suggest that the role of the moment was sort - disaster. he seemed to suggest that the role of the moment was sort of. the role of the moment was sort of occupying israeli defence force's time and equipment, so that that is in a way helping hamas by the fact that israel is stretched on these two fronts with these questions that have been going across the border between israel and lebanon. how much of an impact is that having? is it stretching israel particularly? i stretching israel particularly? i don't... i don't know. look, stretching israel particularly? i don't... idon't know. look, i'll put it this way, neither hezbollah nor israel is interested in a confrontation, neither now nor in the future. israel has no interest in lebanon, and his—brother—word—mack*s primary function is not combating israel. its role against israel has effectively ended in 2000 when israel pulled up from lebanon unilaterally. hezbollah has become the most important iranian proxy in the most important iranian proxy in the region. to do businesses other than fighting israel. so i mean, the nature of fighting in the south now, each party remains committed to the rules of engagement that were determined by the cease—fire in 2006. nobody is interested in escalation. should hezbollah strike israel, strikes in kind without further escalation. so the region i think, lebanon is eventually heading toward pacification in terms of confrontation with israel. thank you so much for — confrontation with israel. thank you so much for talking _ confrontation with israel. thank you so much for talking with _ confrontation with israel. thank you so much for talking with us, - confrontation with israel. thank you so much for talking with us, thank i so much for talking with us, thank you very much forjoining us. around the world and across the uk, this is bbc news falls. let's look at some other stories making news in the uk. nearly a0 flood warnings are still in place across the uk in the aftermath of storm ciaran. nearly 150,000 homes were left without power after the severe weather caused widespread flooding and damage. while the worst of the weather is now over, rain and violent winds are forecast for some parts of the uk this weekend. a man accused of soliciting to murder and incitement to kidnap tv presenter holly willoughby has pleaded not guilty to both charges. gavin plumb appeared at chelmsford crown court. the judge set a trial date ofjune 24th and remanded the 36—year—old in custody. the trial is expected to last two weeks. a conservative mp who told an activist to "go back to bahrain" has been found guilty of a racially aggravated public order offence. bob stewart made the comment during an argument with a man outside the foreign office's lancaster house in westminster on december 14th. he was fined £600. you're live with bbc news. the situation for those who are inside gaza remains dire. our special correspondent fergal keane, who is based injerusalem, has been working with journalists filming for the bbc on the ground in gaza to report the impact of the war on civilians there. a warning, his piece contains distressing images from the start. i'm afraid we can't bring you that report, let's see if we can get it to you shortly. our correspondent paul adams is injerusalem for us. we've had more details from the israeli military about their ground operation. and also on this strike on an ambulance, could you talk us through what's been going on today? so the ambulance story is, was _ what's been going on today? so the ambulance story is, was a _ what's been going on today? so the ambulance story is, was a bit - ambulance story is, was a bit confusing because we had these rather graphic pictures from outside the schieffer hospital with bodies living and dead, on the ground. israeli authorities have put out a statement in the last hours so in which they said they did indeed hit an ambulance, but ambulance that they said had a number of hamas operatives inside. —— shifa hospital. the ambulance was identified by forces being used by a hamas forces sell in their proximity and the battle zone. here is a case of hamas hiding inside an ambulance, according to them. israelis have accused hamas of actually operating inside hospitals in particular shifa hospital where they say that the hamas and have a series of bunkers so they are saying that this was a legitimate target, and they were emphasising once again, this is a battle zone and civilians in the area are repeatedly called upon to evacuate southwards, but that's a problem because on the road south from gaza city to what is, in theory, a safer part of the gaza strip, though it really isn't in practice, people are being attacked on the road. and we have asked the israelis to examine some images that we have seen of bodies lying on that road that appear to have been hit while attempting to move south. the israelis have not yet explained what they think those pictures show, but it is an alarming sign because a few days ago the israeli military were saying that the window of opportunity for people to leave northern gaza and move south, that that window was closing. and northern gaza and move south, that that window was closing.— that window was closing. and also toda , that window was closing. and also today. we've _ that window was closing. and also today, we've had _ that window was closing. and also today, we've had more _ that window was closing. and also today, we've had more people - that window was closing. and also - today, we've had more people leaving through the crossing, haven't we? yeah, i think that some of this plays into i think that some of this plays into some of israel's concerns, that hamas by letting go some hostages, by hezbollah, by tempering its language, is sort of metering out the pain and holding back the response, or making it a very difficult environment for israel to respond. because each step, whether it's by hamas letting go of hostages, or hezbollah rattling a sabre but not escalating any more attacks. it creates a relations nightmare for israel. you have everybody latching onto the hope, me we can get more people out, maybe we can avoid a much larger war, but that pushes the peace process further and all that, sort of tempers the environment for israeli military response. find tempers the environment for israeli military response.— military response. and yet antony bhnken military response. and yet antony itlinken today _ military response. and yet antony blinken today still _ military response. and yet antony blinken today still talking - military response. and yet antony blinken today still talking about . military response. and yet antony blinken today still talking about a | blinken today still talking about a two state solution being the only viable path to peace, even though it feels such a long way away at the moment, doesn't it?
