hello, i'm ben thompson. welcome to the daily global, where we'll bring you the top stories from around the world. for the first time since the war between israel and hamas began, dozens of injured palestinians have been allowed to leave gaza, via the rafah crossing into egypt. these pictures from egyptian media show what they say are the first foreign nationals to cross. palestinian and egyptian officials say at least 320 foreign passport holders have crossed into egypt from southern gaza. the foreign office says british nationals will start to be taken out in stages over the coming days. the territory was besieged by israel after it was attacked over three weeks ago by hamas, which is classed as a terrorist organisation by the uk and other western governments. in northern gaza, another large airstrike has hit jabalia, a day after an israeli attack killed dozens of people in the same refugee camp. there's been no comment from the israeli military, but it did say 15 of its soldiers have been killed in gaza over the last two days. as dual nationals in gaza. 0ur international editor, jeremy bowen, has our first report which contains material you may find upsetting. at last, some signs of hope at the rafa crossing between gaza and egypt. some foreign citizens are being allowed to leave for the first time since israel imposed its siege. convoys of aid trucks are moving into gaza, though not nearly as many as the un and aid agencies say are necessary. ambulances went in for the seriously wounded. translation: we face | many problems in gaza, the least of which were the shortage of water and electricity. the bigger problem was the bombardment. we were afraid. many families were martyred. the un said gaza civilians were being starved, traumatised and bombed to death. injabalia, where at least 120 people were killed by a big israeli air strike, they were looking for signs of life. 0n the other side of the border wire, israelis are still in shock over 7th october attacks. this is a kibbutz nirim directly facing gaza. for the first time, adele was back to look and to grab a few things. her old hopes of peace with her neighbours in gaza gone forever. stopping anything like this happening again is powering israel's determination to see this fight through to the end. adele showed me the place where son—in—law saved her three granddaughters, all under the age of ten. tell me what happened here. there, there is their safe room and there is where he shot the terrorists. as kibbutz nirim was under attack, hamas radio messages were intercepted and the israeli army gave us this excerpt. the fence has been fixed, israel's security has not. so there is no doubt there was a lot of complacency about the risks that hamas posed to israel and, after the war, there is going to be an inquiry, but, even now, the prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, is under a lot of pressure about his responsibility for the security lapses that led to hamas breaching the border. and, as more israeli soldiers die, that pressure will increase. this was the funeral of 20—year—old lavi lifschitz, killed in combat in gaza. israelis are behind their troops, but increasingly, they want to know how so much went wrong. jeremy bowen, bbc news, in southern israel. a couple of lines to bring you about british people brought up in this conflict. the foreign office is at the first british nationals have left gaza. the first british nationals have crossed the border crossing into egypt. we know it is open for a limited time today to allow some of those injured in gaza to leave, to get help in egypt, but also foreign nationals able to make the crossing across the border. the statement goes on to say we'll continue to work with partners to ensure that the crossing is opened again, allowing vital aid, as we have discussed, into gaza and for more foreign nationals to leave safely. they say the crossing will be open for a controlled and time—limited period to allow specific groups of foreign nationals and serious wounded to leave. the first british nationals have been amongst those able to leave the territory. at the same time of course those hamas attacks has left many families still without answers. 14 many families still without answers. 1a britons were killed in those attacks, 1a britons killed in those attacks. three are still missing, so the wait goes on the family's photos through britain still missing, but 14 through britain still missing, but 1a now confirmed dead. uk authorities, the statement reads, will work with israeli authorities and others to establish what happened to them. so some answers insofar as knowing the fate of those 14 britons, but as yet no detail about what happened to them and for the other three still missing no answers as yet. so those two lines regarding british people caught up in the conflict. many families are waiting at the rafah crossing desperate to leave gaza. our special correspondent fergal keane, who is based injerusalem, has been working with freelance journalists in gaza filming for the bbc to tell their stories. caught in the borderlands, the small space between war and peace. because whatever is ahead has to be better than what is behind them. in this place of the list... ..the names of the lucky ones. that's if luck is having to flee your home, to say goodbye to family left behind under bombardment. mona has an australian passport. she told a bbc colleague of her anguish at leaving family behind. i'm not happy at all, that's because i am leaving my other part, my brothers and sisters, my whole family is still here. iwish, inshallah, they'll all be in safe place. the situation is terrible there. it is very, very bad. many of those who can't get to egypt are crowding into gaza's hospitals, believing they might be safe there. they bring their wounded and their questions. translation: the patients ask me i if they should go to the south, i but the south is being bombed and the hospitals in the south are crowded. or should they stay in gaza? they ask me if they can stay in hospital here, but it is also crowded and we have no place for them. we do not know how we can treat them. we feel sorry for them because we can't provide them with any services, although the hospital is open. this boy suffers from seizures made worse by the terrors of the war. this is the third time his sister has tried to get him across the border. every time the situation, when i believe it's got to the worst, itjust keeps getting worse. then, i don't know, it's like we are trying to survive. like we're not sure we're going to make it but we're trying to do anything we can do to survive because i simply don't want to die at 24, basically. we heard tonight they didn't make it out. but they'll try again tomorrow. they'll keep trying. fergal keane, bbc news, jerusalem. 0ur correspondent inside gaza rushdi abualouf has spent the day at the rafah crossing. reporting from there is of course extremely difficult but he started by explaining that while hundreds of people had gathered only a small proportion were actually allowed to cross. i saw isawa i saw a family with bags and they were just waiting and waiting. {jut were 'ust waiting and waiting. out of were just waiting and waiting. out ofthe were just waiting and waiting. out of the 500 people on the list, 345 people left. i saw 500 people on the list. they might issue another shortlist for people because today, the first day, it was chaotic in the morning but manageable. we didn't see any sort of fighting amongst the people that they came. people realised it was not open for everybody, just people on the list, and the list was sent by the egyptians, they put it on the wall and everybody was trying to find their name. people on the crossing will check your passport and make sure that the name matches the list. i was spending all day talking to people there, some of them were happy because they were crossing, but they're really sad at the same time because they left families behind and they don't know what is going to happen to them, but overall it is significant, it is significant that the crossing was opened today, not only for the citizens, the jewel nationals come up for hundreds of people, patients are waiting in this hospital to be treated outside because the hospital is overwhelmed by the number of people with serious injuries, people with severe injuries, people with severe injuries, they are waiting for them to go and be treated in egypt, not only the jo national citizens. around the world and across the uk. this is bbc news. let's look at some other stories making news in the uk. the county councils network says one in ten county councils in so far donald jr took the stand, he was sworn in and joked that he should have worn make—up as photographers took this picture. he said he had no knowledge of general accounting principles, that he had certified public accountants that looked after that for him. those are the first bits of questioning to come through from the courtroom. what he is trying to underline is his argument that hejust signed trying to underline is his argument that he just signed off on financial statements that were put to him by the company was back experts, that he himself didn't have anything to do with valuing the assets or any fraudulent activity. this is what is happening as we speak. the judge as i mentioned, has already ruled on this case but this could have significant implications for donald trump and in the channel islands saying things here could be really difficult, especially first thing tomorrow morning. they are expecting the rain and the winds to strengthen through the night, peaking about maybe 100 mile in our gusts at around 5am or 6am tomorrow. that is why the message from officials is that people should get home tonight, get off the roads and stay at home tomorrow. things are closing, rotor closing, business as shutting up early. we have seen people put out sandbags and flood barriers. as well as the winds and the strong rain, they are expecting a very high tide. that is why there are so many books are taking shelter in the harbour. people have been told to make sure they are tethered safely. people have been tying down anything that could get loose. the schools here in jersey and guernsey will be closed tomorrow and the airport will be closed to commercial flights on both islands, as well. there has been some concern among people on the islands that they could be assured, and officials say contingency plans are in place. they want people to be in no doubt that the risk is serious. they say this is the worst weather that the channel islands have seen since 1987. it is notjust the channel islands, we are expecting the conditions to be difficult right across the south of england with very tricky travel conditions, perhaps right through the day. that is why the messages, if you can at all, at home. a former top civil servant has told the covid inquiry that there wasn't one day during the pandemic when the coronavirus rules were properly followed in downing street. helen macnamara, who used to be the second most senior civil servant in the country, also said borisjohnson*s "breezy confidence" at the time jarred with her and that there had been a toxic, macho culture in government. 0ur political editor, chris mason, reports. closed... ..empty... ..little moving but the escalators. bleak memories of 2020. a virus at first distant, and then quickly frightening. and a government that was vastly unprepared, as this senior civil servant told downing street at the time. what she said then, read out today by the lawyer questioning her. "i have come through here, to the prime minister's office, to tell you all i think we are absolutel i think this country is heading for a disaster. i think we are going to kill thousands of people." is it right that that is an accurate account? yes. it's very striking. yes. no doubt, you can still remember that moment of realisation? yes, it was horrible. helen macnamara was herself fined for notjust turning up at a leaving do in westminster when leaving dos were banned, but turning up with a karaoke machine. she reckons in downing street the covid rules were broken nearly all the time. i would find it hard to pick one day when the regulations were followed properly inside that building. we are going to take you straight to israel and the israeli president who is talking about the latest events in the conflict. he said he had spoken to the us secretary of state who has been emphasising the need to take reasonable precautions to minimise harm to civilians. that has been one of the main criticisms of the israeli air strike since i gaza. translation: we the israeli air strike since i gaza. translation:— the israeli air strike since i gaza. translation: ~ ., translation: we will not let them -revail. translation: we will not let them prevail- they _ translation: we will not let them prevail. they cannot _ translation: we will not let them prevail. they cannot break- translation: we will not let them prevail. they cannot break our -
