atletico madrid tonight to keep their hopes alive of progressing in the tournament. it's been another day of stunning batting at the cricket world cup as glenn maxwell rewrote the record books with an historic innings. he hit a century offjust a0 balls, the fastest in world cup history, to put australia in complete control against the netherlands. david warner also hit a century as australia set 127th and final cap. youngs made his test debut against scotland in march 2010 when current coach steve borthwick was captain. i feel incredibly proud to have done it for this long. i think it's taken a huge amount of effort to do it for 13 years, and it'sjust a huge amount of effort to do it for 13 years, and it's just fitting. a huge amount of effort to do it for 13 years, and it'sjust fitting. it feels right. ifeel so privileged to be able to play and walk away on my terms. i've always had this focus of getting to this world cup, and i never felt that after this world cup i would need to carry on or anything like that. some will look forward to playing club rugby and look forward to supporting this team from a distance, but it's been a great ride. meanwhile, the rugby football union have revealed talks are under way for a women's international against new zealand at twickenham next year in what would be a repeat of last year's world cup final. england's women first played at twickenham last year, when over 58,000 fans watched them beat france to win the six nations grand slam. you can get more on that and everything else on the bbc sport website. i'll be back bit later. here in the uk, two met police officers have been sacked after a disciplinary panel found that their actions during a stop—and—search of two black athletes amounted to gross misconduct. british sprinter bianca williams and her partner ricardo dos santos were pulled over in 2020. their three—month—old baby was in the back of the car while the couple were handcuffed and detained. no weapons or drugs were found. video of the stop—and—search went viral on social media. the two sacked officers, pcsjonathan clapham and sam franks, have a right to appeal the decision. the other three officers — acting sergeant rachel simpson, pc allan casey and pc michael bond — were found by the panel not to have committed gross misconduct and all allegations against them were not proven. ricardo dos santos spoke to reporters outside the court. allegations made by the police officers that i was guilty of bad driving, threatening violence and drugs were dishonest. i believe these are false allegations and were based on racist stereotypes and show very little that has changed in policing in london since the stephen lawrence case. following those remarks, our correspondent adina campbell sat down with bianca williams and asked her what she thought of the decision. i feel like it's not enough for me because is it really ok for five, six officers to come out of the car with their batons ready and their glass—cutter in their hand ready to smash the window? is that really 0k? like, that was frightening, and... i don't know, it'sjust... it's going to continue happening, and, like, that's the sad reality of it, of being a black person growing up in london, that no matter what we do, we're just never good enough. how much has all of this affected you, notjust your professional life, but also on a personal level as well? i've literally done my best to block it out. i rarely do interviews. i don't like speaking about it. i don't like talking about it. when people want to bring it up, ijust kind of, like, just change the subject because it just fills me with so much emotion, even now. sorry. it's just...it's just really hard. and, like, evenjust driving the car, like, whenever i see a police car, i'm alwaysjust looking, i'm always, like, on edge because who knows what they're going to do? who knows if they're going to follow me now and pull me over and, you know, without ricardo being there? i panic about ricardo driving with zuri all the time. like, i need to know where you're going, like, if you've stopped, just, i'm just always on edge. even if ricardo's driving and i'm in the front, like, in the front passenger seat, like, i'm always looking if there's a police car. like, if the car's going in the opposite direction, i'm always looking behind to see are they going to make a u—turn and follow us? i shouldn't have to live like that. like, my anxiety is through the roof whenever i see a police car, and it's not right. just want to return to the middle east because emmanuel macron has just concluded his meeting with the egyptian president was a b for pictures being relayed to the bc. he said something very important there that a massive israeli ground incursion into gaza would be quote an error. interesting that comment because you see western leaders routinely going to israel and offering support and saying israel has the right to use at the fence with this is the first time really we are seeing an articulation of any sort of call for restraint because emmanuel macron saying a massive israeli ground incursion into gaza would be an error. your leader said that france was not guilty of double standards on israel and gaza, and he also gave some latest details that france are going to send a navy ship to support gaza hospitals but that is a really interesting line, just cautioning about a really large scale ground incursion. so we will keep an eye on that. that's interesting and bring you more analysis as it comes into us. here in the uk, labour leader sir keir starmer has been meeting muslim mps from his party amid tensions over labour's stance on the israel—gaza war. sir keir has faced criticism from an islamic centre in cardiff which accused him of "gravely" misrepresenting a meeting with muslim leaders there over the weekend. he's also faced a backlash after appearing to say israel had the "right" to cut off water and energy to gaza. he later said he meant that israel had a right to self—defence. let's get more on this from our political correspondent leila nathoo in westminster. that original comment was a radio interview he gave. 0ne that original comment was a radio interview he gave. one of the problems he is facing criticism over is that it to the camp, i think it was, nine days to make that adaptation of what he was saying and the clarification.— the clarification. yeah, this was an interview that _ the clarification. yeah, this was an interview that was _ the clarification. yeah, this was an interview that was given _ the clarification. yeah, this was an interview that was given as - the clarification. yeah, this was an interview that was given as a - the clarification. yeah, this was an l interview that was given as a couple of days after, in the immediate aftermath of those attacks by hamas in which sir keir starmer was questioned by his views on it and he appeared to say that israel had the right to withhold power and water from palestinians in gaza. now, as you say, this did immediately cause a lot of anger within the labour party, and it was not until many days later that his spokesperson clarify that actually he had been answering a variety of questions put to him and that he was saying broadly israel had a right to defend itself. but i think in so far as an image of the interview, it certainly was done because there have been resignations of local labour representative counsellors across the country. there were 20 odd counsellors he resigned over the issue specifically citing the interview. that is part of hundreds of counsellors that labour has across the country but certainly show the strength of feeling, and it was something that was brought up by mps saying that constituents had mentioned that interview. so i think that certainly did not help his position. then you had a sort of growing call from within the labour party for labour tobacco cease—fire. 0ne party for labour tobacco cease—fire. one of the other opposition parties, the snp, has already begun calling for that and you had 37 labour mps already calling for a cease—fire and further pressure on the labour leader now to back that. so we have had another letter today from more than 150 muslim labour counsellors calling for leaver to support a cease—fire. that is something that lara is resisting so far and just let the government there's not much different between the labour position and government position so far indeed we have heard labour support the idea of humanitarian pauses which is something that the prime minister also mentioned today. i will come to him in a moment but in terms of that meeting with mps, what are you hearing came out of it? is there a subtle position? did he reassure those mps? what is the feel of it? . , , ., ., of it? leadership would have the meetin: of it? leadership would have the meeting as _ of it? leadership would have the meeting as constructive - of it? leadership would have the meeting as constructive with - of it? leadership would have the l meeting as constructive with about ten mps and one pier i'm told who turned up for this meeting with the broad leader sir keir starmer and his deputy angela rayner. the meeting was designed to be a sort of forum where the mps could air their views together and submit been having private meetings with leadership of this was a meeting of a muslim labour mps togetherfor the first time. i'm also told that there were a number of other mps gathering at the same time also to discuss calls for a cease—fire, so it's clear that there is unease across the parliamentary labour party on this and many mps do want lara to shift their position. 0ne mp told me that there was an airing and about views being heard and shared. but there was no policy shift at the end of this meeting, and after there will be further meetings as and when required by both sides. but it's clearly a live discussion we have already heard today from one labour front bencher, so somebody who is a shadow minister, calling publicly for a cease—fire, calling publicly what is happening in gaza as collective punishment to date, that was a labour mp asking a question at prime minister's questions and you can see there are some gaps opening up can see there are some gaps opening up within the parliamentary labour party. there is talk of whether there might be resignations from the shadow ministerial posts, none is yet, but the very fact that is being discussed is a sign of the strength of feeling brewing but i think leadership quite keen to shut this down to say that the labour leader is listening and that he is having a number of meetings with mps and outside parliament on this issue. and they are very clear that he has been quite outspoken in terms of what he believes the situation is, and i think stressing the support for the idea of humanitarian pauses as brought up by rishi sunak also today in the comments.— as brought up by rishi sunak also today in the comments. thanks very much let's pick _ today in the comments. thanks very much let's pick up _ today in the comments. thanks very much let's pick up where _ today in the comments. thanks very much let's pick up where she - today in the comments. thanks very much let's pick up where she left . much let's pick up where she left off. meanwhile, rishi sunak says the uk would consider discussing a humanitarian pause in gaza to facilitate aid getting in, but does not want a wholesale ceasefire. a royal air force plane carrying humanitarian aid for gaza took off from the raf brize norton in 0xfordshire heading to egypt. the uk government has promised an additional £20 million of humanitarian support for gaza. mr sunak says he does not agree with calls for a full ceasefire as that would only benefit hamas. a little earlier, the wall street journal reported that the united states government has been negotiating with israel to the delay it's incursion. i spoke earlier to an american officer and his response. an american officer and his re5ponse-_ an american officer and his resonse. g , , ., , , response. my sense would be this feels possible. _ response. my sense would be this feels possible. we _ response. my sense would be this feels possible. we have _ response. my sense would be this feels possible. we have to - response. my sense would be this| feels possible. we have to confirm it. so us forces have been coming under attack in the region over the last week or so. bob iranian backed militias in iraq. they have been getting attacked in their base in southern syria and in iraq with threat of other regional attacks of the us military are taking it very seriously. so it feels like they are putting in place further defences. there are of course implications on the battlefield in gaza and not least for the troops. we have heard already that the israeli troops, you know they are poised and ready to go but the longer they are waiting, that's hard for them to stay at that state of readiness for a long time. let's turn to perhaps what happens if there is a ground incursion. the type of fighting because you have experience of exactly this from your time fighting is. just give us an idea of the similarities, the sorts of things those israeli troops might come up against. of things those israeli troops might come up against-— come up against. yeah, the first to sa is of come up against. yeah, the first to say is of course _ come up against. yeah, the first to say is of course there _ come up against. yeah, the first to say is of course there are - say is of course there are differences. you can but with the number of differences but there are certainly parallels. and i think the first thing to say is fighting in cities, we saw this in mosul, so it's a situated. by that i mean more troops are needed, you suffered more casualties, the event of a mission that gets expended is increased, the human suffering goes up. so everything gets accentuated. and the iraqi forces are not necessarily a match for the israeli forces were they did have a global coalition supporting but it took them nine months to clear through mosul and they begin that battle with 100,000 troops. a uk police officer who incited more than 200 young girls to send him explicit pictures and videos of themselves over snapchat has beenjailed for life with a minimum term of 12 years. lewis edwards groomed the girls, who were aged between 10—16, and forced them to send him indecent images that he secretly recorded and used to blackmail them. our home affairs correspondent daniel sandford reports from cardiff. are we going to find evidence of you engaging in sexual communication with children? no comment. when he was arrested back in february, pc lewis edwards refused to answer questions about his campaign of unspeakable cruelty against girls as young as ten... no comment. ..but later in court, he admitted 160 offences of blackmail and sexually abusing children online. it is clear that he not only gained sexual gratification _ from his offending, but that he also enjoyed the power and control- that he had over these young girls. his reaction to their distress can properly be described _ as cruel and sadistic. lewis ran his campaign of online abuse from the front room of his parents' semi—detached house. posing as a teenage boy on snapchat, he befriended girls aged 10—16 and then blackmailed them into sending him more and more explicit videos of themselves by threatening to post their naked images online. he messaged one girl... in desperation, one 12—year—old replied... ..but still felt compelled to send more pictures. the superintendent who oversaw the case recalls vividly when her senior investigating officer told her the suspect was a policeman. i still have goose bumps when i think about it now, because this sort of criminality in any event is just despicable, but to find out it was potentially being committed by one of your own — because he was a serving police officer at the time — makes it all the more dreadful. during the sentencing hearing, cardiff crown court was played heart—rending videos of edwards' victims crying and begging him to stop, but still he asked for more. for almost all of the time that he was blackmailing and abusing the girls, pc lewis edwards was working for south wales police. detectives have checked his shift pattern and, yes, he was carrying out some of the online abuse while he was on duty. the jailing of former pc lewis edwards means that 18 officers have now been sent to prison for child sexual abuse since january last year. another 13 were convicted, but not sent to prison, making a total of 31. former pc lewis edwards is now facing many years injail. one of his victims, who was 12 when he demanded explicit pictures from her, told the court that she would never get over the trauma. daniel sandford, bbc news, at cardiff crown court. a reminder we are expecting to hear from the prime minister of israel in about ten minutes times to keep an eye on that. when it comes to getting yourself a life coach, you could do worse than someone who has been a hollywood megastar, a leading politician and the most muscular man in the universe. we're talking, of course, about arnold schwarzenegger. he's written a book filled with advice on how to be successful, and he's been sharing some words of wisdom with our entertainment correspondent colin paterson. arnold schwarzenegger, you will see the bbc has sent along its muscliest correspondent. when you see a body like mine, what do you feel? is it pity, or do you see potential? extraordinary. it's really amazing. and how you can cover it all up with a simple shirt. i think i'm blushing. i can't believe it. yeah, you are, yeah. we're in the very strange situation, because of the actors' strike, we can't talk about your movies. does this mean i have to do your catchphrases today? what's the rules there? you can go and say, "get to the chopper!" you can say, "i'll be back." i'll be back. i'm very happy that i've had a great movie career... ..because one of the rules that i talk about in the book is, don't listen to the naysayers. so when they said to me, "you would never be a comedy star..." twins. ..i said, "i want to be a comedy star. i think i have a sense of humour." my name isjulius, and i'm your twin brother. 0h, obviously. and you speak in the book about lows that you've had and how you came back from them. so many times people read about my successes, but, i mean, on the way to get there, there were tremendous defeats and there were tremendous losses. and so i talk about that and what did it take when i was beaten the first time in body—building and i became second in the mr universe contest? and i realised, isaid, "arnold, you're not a loser. you lost this competition. losers stay down, but winners always get up." and even on personal losses — you know, like my marriage, the mistakes that i've made — you have to be responsible for those mistakes. you can't go and blame someone else for it. and i talk about that in the book. you know, take responsibility, take ownership of those mistakes that you've made and learn from that and then come back and be a better person. one thing you're never going to be able to do is become us president because you have to be born in the united states. how much of an annoyance is that to you? you know, it's not, really. ifeel like i would make a great president, but i feel at the same time that everything that i've accomplished was because of america. so the only thing that i can't do, which is run for president, i'm not going to complain about that! arnold schwarzenegger, thank you very much. thank you. 0w, ow, ow, ow! laughter. great stuff they are from colin. let's head to the us because that vote process is about to start. the fourth attempt by republicans to get a house speaker. mikejohnson has just been nominated. there was a massive round of applause. let's put the microphones up in here a bit of what's going on. applause. she went on to say the times in which we are living demand boldness, unity and transformational leadership that begins with trust in god and each other. trust is when the magic happens. in the story of king david... the magic happens. in the story of king david---_ king david... that process 'ust beginning. * king david... that process 'ust beginning. let's i king david... that process see at the end king david... that processjust i beginning. let's see at the end of it if we see a new house speaker elected. it is a safe, this the fourth attempt, republicans in total disarray the last few weeks with no house speaker sitting in that of course many nothing getting done on capitol hill. so we will watch those scenes and just in the early stages before any sort of bow and bring you that here live on bbc news. applause worst is returning to what we heard from emmanuel macron at the end of that trip in egypt, st francis recognises israel's right to defend itself and regarding a ground in incursion entirely targeted but he said it will be an error if it was a massive grout invasion the endangered civilian populations. so a very, very interesting interjection from the french president. we will have more on that and the rest of the headlines. hello there. we did have some sunshine today through the midlands and wales in particular. the earlier heavy rain across southern parts of england cleared away, but it was rather cloudy in scotland and that cloud likely to linger into this evening and overnight. same, too, across parts of the north—east of england with some showery outbreaks of rain, a brisk east wind. at the same time, a weather front moving in towards northern ireland bringing some heavier outbreaks of rain, also in towards wales, the south—west of england. and as we approach midnight and the early hours of thursday morning, that wet weather pushing in towards the midlands, the north—west of england and in towards the far south—east. temperatures here overnight, a rather chilly four degrees in norwich. not as cold in scotland compared with last night, and mild in the south—west at around 11 celsius. into thursday, a low pressure situated to our west once again bringing weather fronts, showery outbreaks of rain and some brisk winds around the south—west coast and the north and north—east coast of scotland. through the day, we've got the overnight rain continuing to track its way northwards towards the north—east of england and further showery outbreaks of rain through scotland as well. some of this wet weather could well become fairly stagnant across eastern areas through the end of the week. elsewhere on thursday, we've got some sunshine, but also a number of sharp showers and temperatures around 11—15 celsius. on friday once again, low pressure situated to the west, sending weather fronts, showery outbreaks of rain our way. there will be some brighter skies in the mix at times, too. you can see, though, certainly across parts of scotland, outbreaks of rain consistently pushing in from the north sea on those brisk east, south—east winds. elsewhere for much of england and wales, it's a bright friday, plenty of sunshine around, but also a number of heavy showers. same, too, in towards parts of the northern ireland. temperatures similar. and then into the weekend, that area of low pressure still with us, so further weather fronts and outbreaks of rain. and at the same time, we're starting to see a bit of a north wind developing, bringing some cooler conditions to the far north of scotland. at the same time, in between, we've got this area of rain, which could cause a few issues through parts of eastern scotland. elsewhere on saturday, we've got outbreaks of rain and some sunshine through the midlands, east anglia and the north—east of england. so a rather unsettled outlook, and it stays that way through the tail end of the weekend and into the start of next week, too, with some sunshine but also showers or longer spells of rain at times. that's the forecast. tonight at six — the besieged territory of gaza is running out of fuel. the un says without fresh supplies, its work with refugees there might stop tonight. we speak to one gaza medic working night and day to keep survivors alive. there are many hard situations. as an ambulance driver you get accustomed to what is happening, whether it is hands, heads or bodies that are cut. and after a furious response from israel — the head of the un clarifies his remarks on the conflict. i believe it was necessary to set the record straight, especially out of respect to the victims and to theirfamilies. and the other main stories here tonight... the team gb athlete bianca williams tells us she's now always on edge when driving, as two metropolitan police officers are sacked for gross misconduct, following her stop and search. and, i'll be back — as a life coach. arnold schwarzenegger tells us why he's written a self—help book. coming on sportsday later in the hour on bbc news, records fall at the cricket world cup as glenn maxwell smashes australia to a huge win against the netherlands. good evening from jerusalem. the united nations says hospitals and other services in gaza — which is under a blockade by israel — are running out of fuel.
