Freed on health grounds, hamas said no longer hostages but survivors. Both were kidnapped by hamas gunmen from their homes in nir oz, the scars of looting and destruction still mark the empty kibbutz. This was what they lived through. The vision of home they took to gaza, just three miles away. And this was what they lived through there. Israeli air strikes, more than 300 a day, caught between their army and hamas. Many Palestinian Civilians feel the same. Gazas hamas run government says israeli strikes killed more than 400 people in a single day. Hope, draining from the chance of peace, still surfaces in the chance to save a life. Ibrahim from blackpool is trying to leave gaza with his mother and three siblings. They have been living here for a year. Buildings very close to us on our street, destroyed. We had to flee the house, flee our flat where we were living, and go to khan younis, and stay with Family Members. There were 43 of us staying in one flat. 0n the israeli side of the border, they have already left. In the town of sderot, 90 of the residents have gone. Rocket attacks here in recent weeks, Early Warning signs of a wider war. Shalom already has ptsd from a Rocket Attack on a building here in 2005. Seeing hamas gunmen running through the streets was unreal, he says. Translation its like a bad dream and i want to wake. Up and not be here. I am frozen. I dont want to be here. The whole building was shaking last night and we spent all night in the safe room, again. Its the same thing over and over again. As we were speaking, a taste of what life is like here now. Translation it was a Rocket Attack from gaza. Now youve experienced it live. It happens all the time. Sderot is less than a mile from the border, so close you can see the explosions from israeli air strikes inside gaza. The geography here is local, the politics are global. As israels Prime Minister juggles visits by world leaders, his army is waiting to go in. Rockets were still being fired into israel today. And israeli air strikes fired in. Hostages complicate a Ground Offensive pawns in a conflict that israel vows it will end. Our state Department Correspondent Barbara Plett usher has more on the hostage release, and the wider us involvement in the war. State Department Officials have said that, as far as they know, hamas has not been getting anything in return for releasing hostages. Now, hamas has cited humanitarian reasons, but also reportedly its asking for a ceasefire in order to set free more of the hostages. There have been reports that the us has asked israel to delay its Ground Invasion of gaza in order to give more time to get more hostages released. Administration officials have not confirmed that there has been a direct request, and we understand that if it was made, it would have probably been done through military channels. Certainly the us is advising israel on its Military Operations and also on its concerns. And one of those is the hostages, that if tanks start rolling into gaza, then that window of opportunity to get more of them released would almost certainly close. Another big concern is attacks on us interests in the region. Us troops in iraq have come under attack from militant groups which are backed by iran. There are about 2500 us troops in iraq and about 900 in syria, where there are also shia militant groups which are backed by iran. So the us is concerned about this escalating notjust into a wider war, but into more attacks against american targets. They want more time to prepare. Theyre sending more defences, Missile Defence systems. They have redirected an Aircraft Carrier strike group to the central command, which covers the persian gulf. And they have also ordered that ordered families and non emergency staff in Diplomatic Missions in iraq to depart. Live now to sydney, where we can speak to dr eyal mayroz, senior lecturer in peace and conflict studies at the university of sydney. A warm welcome to the programme. Listening to some of the latest developments, what is your take on whats been happening . We have the release of two more hostages, which has to be a positive. To be a positive. Well, the release to be a positive. Well, the release is to be a positive. Well, the release is certainly to be a positive. Well, the l release is certainly positive. Both israel and the americans are in precarious positions. The americans are worried both what is happening overseas, in terms of their people, their forces and so on, but also domestically, the support for israel in the us is strong at the moment, but with more casualties, especially among the american hostages, but even in relation to the gazan casualties, support for the biden administrations strong siding with israel may deteriorate, and that is a worrying thing. The americans dont want to give up any inch and there isa to give up any inch and there is a stronger calls to privatise the release of the hostages, in israel, something the government and much of the israeli public, its not yet even willing to consider. find even willing to consider. And that is something even willing to consider. And that is something hamas is very aware of, as it holds on these people in terms of the political power it gives them. Indeed so. I think also human shields, and in terms of their ability to delay a Ground Invasion, this is something that hamas seems to prioritise at the moment. Despite a lot of analysis, which suggests hamas was interested in an israeli invasion because of some unpleasant surprises it has prepared for the israelis. Something that is interesting as well, the Chinese Foreign minister is going to be visiting washington from thursday to sunday, meeting with Secretary Of State antony blinken. They are going to talk about israel and ukraine and chinas approach to this, how chinas approach to this, how china is seen as a player in the diplomacy here. China is seen as a player in the diplomacy here. China has not et the diplomacy here. China has not yet played the diplomacy here. China has not yet played any the diplomacy here. China has not yet played any meaningful role in what is happening between israel and hamas, or israel and the palestinians. They did take a number of initiatives over the last year orso initiatives over the last year or so in the middle east, in relation to iran, the warming relationship between iran and saudi arabia, and so on. So whether or not they are interested to increase their diplomatic efforts is something that would be interesting to see. In that would be interesting to see. See. In the meantime, the bombing see. In the meantime, the bombing of see. In the meantime, the bombing of gaza see. In the meantime, the| bombing of gaza continues see. In the meantime, the i bombing of gaza continues in earnest, with the Health Ministry there saying over 5000 people have been killed since israel began bombing the territory. Some horrific scenes we are receiving from gaza. Yes, all life is precious, whether israeli or palestinian, but unfortunately both sides at the moment are too hurting to be able to empathise with the suffering on the other side. So i think the International Community has a stronger role to play, to help prevent the carnage that is taking place at the moment in gaza. Delay any kind of Ground Invasion. Increase the humanitarian support for the south of gaza. And hopefully look for ways to minimize what seems to be an inevitable increase in casualties at least in the near future. ~ casualties at least in the near future. , ~ ,. , casualties at least in the near future. , ~. , future. Thank you so much for our future. Thank you so much for your time the Israeli Army Says its carried out limited incursions into gaza ahead of an expected Ground Offensive. 0ur gaza correspondent Rushdi Abualouf is one of the few journalists working in the territory. Hes in Khan Younis In The South and has been reporting on the worsening humanitarian situation there. There is still some sort of a negotiation going on with israel on how in which ground and who is going to handle. The little fuel that came from an oil tank near the border and also about 40 or 45 trucks carrying medicine, food, water. Distant explosion. Yeah, theres been intense air strikes tonight as well. This is the third or fourth one just close to the hospital. So another night of heavy bombing in southern gaza, khan younis. This is the area where israel asked 1. 2 Million People to come in. They said its safer for you to be south. But as you can see, every night, there is airstrikes here in this area. But in gaza city, i think tonight, Hamas Local Authority said that israel is committing massacres. As they said, they destroyed three houses over the heads of their people. More than 20 People Killed and dozens other injured. When we talk about a humanitarian situation, things are getting worse and worse here as the people are watching the trucks coming in, but there is no aid being distributed. Very little aid goes to the shelters, the un shelters. They are talking about 130 shelters for the more than half a Million People who are staying, who are displaced from their houses in gaza city and the north. And they came south. They are now staying in the un schools, un shelters. Lets get some of the days other news now. Mexican Officials Say at least 11 Police Officers have been killed in an armed attack. The identity of the gunmen in guerrero state isnt clear. But the area has suffered from violence related to drug trafficking. Members of a militia in the brazililan city of Rio Dejaneiro Have Set Fire to 35 buses after one of their leaders was killed by the police. The damage has caused major disruption. Rios mayor called the militia members idiots, as well as criminals. Tens of thousands of women in iceland, including the Prime Minister katrinjakobsdottir, will refuse to work today. The strike has been called in protest against gender based violence and inequality. Its the first full day action of its kind since 1975 when 90 of icelandic women took part. This inquest that has opened into the attacks on those two mosques in the City Of Christchurch is very much long awaited by survivors and Family Members of those people who were murdered. Thejob those people who were murdered. The job of the coroner is to really establish a very clear and comprehensive picture of the events of that day. The coroner, she will analyse the response of the Emergency Services and ask other fundamental questions. Could some of the victims have been saved by more speedy medical treatment . And also, did the gunman act alone or was he given direct assistance from someone else . This is new zealandss most complex and biggest investigation. It is expected to last for about six weeks. Certainly Family Members of those 51 people murdered say that this gives them their first real opportunity to ask questions about that terrible day, and also to seek more details about the deaths of their loved ones. Scientists say it is now too late to prevent the melting of the west Antarctic Ice sheet from heating caused by Greenhouse Gas emissions. The study published in the journal nature Climate Change found that the melting of the ice, which is under increasingly warming sea water, will continue to accelerate even if emissions controlled further. They say the likely Sea Level Rise would be greater than previously assumed. But the report says we can still save the ice on the other side of antarctica, which sits on land and can be protected if we reduce greenhouse emissions. Live now to henna hundal, delegate to the un Climate Change conferences, and climate and Policy Researcher at the Stanford School of medicine. This sounds really depressing, if i can put it that way, to say that weve got to this point where the west Antarctic Ice sheet cannot be saved. Thank you for having me. Certainly this study, as you say, a jolting one, a grim picture, the fact that the west Antarctic Ice sheet, a very important contributor to antarcticas role in preventing Sea Level Rise, it looks like the emissions reduction is insufficient to prevent that damage. However despite the fact we have these concerning patterns, losing mass in the glaciers, yes, we have Sea Level Rise and coastal erosion, and the prospect of populations, millions of people being displaced by Climate Change, i dont think this is a reason to throw in the towel and give up hope completely. And i dont think its a reason to believe we are fated to a destiny in which Climate Change will cause an impact that we are totally unable to turn the boat around on. We really have to understand, it is mitigation, adaptation and resilience which is so important. We can ensure the populations most severely affected by Climate Change have time to get a handle on the situation and build infrastructure to be resilient. Its not a time to lose hope completely even though this shows just how serious the problem is. Shows just how serious the problem is problem is. Where this is happening. Problem is. Where this is happening, the problem is. Where this is happening, the ice problem is. Where this is happening, the ice sheet| happening, the ice sheet itself, the fact it is disappearing and cant be saved, as it were, what impact does that have locally on the climate, the animals etc, the people that live there . The real problem people that live there . The real problem is, people that live there . The real problem is, as people that live there . Tue real problem is, as we people that live there . Tte real problem is, as we have this glacier mass loss, we in turn get Sea Level Rise, and unfortunately when you talk about population playback, think of the millions of people that depend on coastlines for their and livelihoods. We are talking about mass displacement. Pacific island states have introduced the term climate migration. This is a real problem that will impact peoples lives as well as the beautiful biodiversity of this earth. Definitely not an issue to take lightly, but i would caution anyone from seeing the news and thinking there is nothing we can do and theres nothing we can do and theres no point in decreasing global emissions. We absolutely need to look to adaptation, mitigation and resilience. Its truly the only way. Truly the only way. Thank you for talking truly the only way. Thank you for talking to truly the only way. Thank you for talking to us, truly the only way. Thank you for talking to us, we for talking to us, we appreciate it. Weve started this week off on a fine note, but things are turning more unsettled now for tuesday onwards, and by the end of the week, itll be turning windier with plenty of blustery showers. So, rain at times over the next few days, but there will be some drier, brighter, sunnier moments at times. The Pressure Chart for tuesday is pretty complicated. Weve got a mess of Weather Fronts across the country, so generally cloudy, i think, today with variable amounts of rain. I think, today with i think most of the rain, persistent at times, will be across northern and Eastern England areas that really dont need any more rainfall, so we have a met Office Yellow warning in here in force for tuesday up until around 4pm. Elsewhere, there will be some sunshine around, best of it, scotland, maybe southern england, but even here therell be a few showers as well. Temperatures 10 15 degrees and winds will remain light and variable for many. Now, as we head through tuesday night, that area of low pressure starts to push back in towards the northeast and we could see some rain for eastern scotland, Northeast England again, areas that dont need the rain. Another pulse of Rain Running Across Southern Britain thanks to another area of low pressure. But in between, drier spells with clear skies, variable cloud, but a milder night to come temperatures 5 8 degrees. For wednesday, again, were in between weather systems. With light winds, well start off with some rain perhaps across the southeast. It could linger here through the day, and that Weather Front across the northeast will still push some cloud and rain in towards eastern scotland, maybe Northeast England again, areas that really dont need any more rainfall. But elsewhere, from northern ireland, down through much of england, wales, we should see some sunshine around. The highs of 14 or 15 degrees, but then it starts to turn wetter and windier in the southwest later in the day, and thats because this much larger area of low pressure will dominate the Weather Scene for thursday and friday and even into the weekend, bringing plenty of showers and strong winds, particularly towards the south and the west. So, the winds picking up across Western Areas through thursday. Band of rain spreads northwards again bringing rainfall to areas that dont need it. But for much of the country, northern ireland, the rest of england, wales, sunny spells, scattered showers. Some of these will be heavy and thundery in places, particularly towards the southwest. Temperatures reaching 15 degrees. If we factor in the wind, might not feel that mild. Similar story on friday and into the weekend low pressure sticks nearby with further showers or even longer spells of rain. Take care. Live from london, this is bbc news.
