intensive aerial bombardment of gaza of gaza since the attacks inside israel two weeks ago in which 1,400 people were murdered and 210 taken hostage. the health ministry says around 4,400 gazans — mainly civilians — have been killed since then in israeli air strikes. that includes 55 people overnight. israel's military has warned civilians in gaza to keep moving south for their own safety, as it prepares to increase pressure on hamas there. hamas is labelled a terrorist origanisation by the uk, us and other western governments. the israeli defense forces said one of its aircraft targeted a mosque in the palestinian city ofjenin, in the west bank. it says hamas and operatives from islamichhad when using it as a base to organise attacks against israel. the un's humanitarian chief says talks have been taking place to allow a second aid convoy into gaza later, after two weeks in which israel stopped supplies of food, water and medicine entering gaza. aid groups say the situation is a catastrophe. on saturday, agreement was reached to allow 20 lorries carrying supplies to cross the rafah borderfrom egypt. but as greg mckenzie reports... aid agencies say that is just a drop in the ocean. the rafah crossing that connects egypt to the southern gaza strip opened yesterday for the first time since hamas launched its assault on israel, to allow 20 trucks to carry aid in. today, the un's humanitarian chief says a second convoy of 20 to 30 trucks could enter the region, delivering much—needed aid, but admits the un and israel are having tough, but fair, discussions about how trucks will be inspected. meanwhile, israel has confirmed increased attacks in gaza and is urging civilians still in the north to move south. translation: for your own safety, move southward. - we will continue to attack in the area of gaza city and increase attacks. we are supervising the humanitarian aid that is entered to unwra from egypt to ensure that the water and medicine are distributed in this humanitarian area we have set. reporters: mr president, mr president! _ asked last night whether he was taking steps to delay an imminent invasion of gaza, mr biden said he was taking to israel. their duty — to respect international law. both the us and uk governments are still working to free those american and british citizens still trapped in gaza. 0vernight, israeli aircraft struck a compound beneath a mosque in the occupied west bank that the military said was being used to organise attacks. greg mckenzie, bbc news. syria says an israeli airstrike on damascus airport has killed at least two people. it says israeli missiles also hit the international airport in aleppo. it's the second time the airports have been targeted in simultaneous attacks since the conflict between israel and hamas escalated earlier this month. military tensions are rising across the region with warnings of increased israeli bombardment over gaza, exchanges of fire between israeli defence forces in northern israel with hezbollah fighters armed by iran in southern lebanon — and the reports of israeli air strikes in syria as we mentioned. i spoke to our middle east correspondent yolande knell. if you look at the gaza strip, the situation is that we still have tanks and troops massed around the edge. we have seen israeli military commanders going around and rallying the troops and giving more indications that they are getting ready for a ground offensive. we had the israeli military chief of staff staying to one infantry brigade, "we are going into gaza," saying that quite clearly. the chief military spokesman talking about this intensification of an aerial bombardment ahead of the next phase to make it safer for israeli troops. so we have seen evidence of that going on overnight, with health ministry officials in the gaza strip — controlled, of course, the health ministry by hamas. we know that more than 55 people have been killed. we know there are hundreds of thousands of palestinians in gaza who have not heeded the israeli evacuation order to move to the south from the north of the gaza strip, and there has been a fresh warning from the israeli military that they should heed the evacuation warning, they should go south. people have been saying they are unwilling to leave or they did not feel it would be safe to leave. and in the bombardment we saw overnight, there are places in the south of the gaza strip where the people have been told to move and they have been hit by deadly israeli airstrikes. we are talking about a widening of the conflict and we have seen worrying developments in the past 24 hours especially, and if we look from the gaza strip, stopped in the past two weeks. 90 palestinians have been killed by israeli security forces and by israeli settlers. 0vernight, there was an israeli military strike, a rare strike in the west bank on thejenin refugee camp, a flashpoint for violence. the israeli military saying it was targeting in its words a terrorist cell, hamas planning fresh attacks on israel. there were reports from palestinian health officials that at least one person was killed and several people injured and that is ratcheting up tensions. i'm sorry... looking at the north of the country, we have seen more areas of northern israel evacuated, with rising concerns that there could be more than the exchange of fire that we have seen in recent days with hezbollah which is armed and trained by iran in southern lebanon and linked to israeli airstrikes over the main airports in syria. that has happened in the past, could you explain? we have seen the people given an evacuation order close to the border with syria and lebanon, and dozens of other communities have been told that they should leave their homes and head south. this is reflective of the worry now that hezbollah could get more involved in what is happening, despite a lot of international warnings trying to put pressure on hezbollah not to get more involved. there have been comments from seniorfigures that they are ready to do so. we have seen in the past few hours continuing exchanges of fire across the border. and then, of course, in syria too, there are palestinian militants that are present there and we know that in the past, israel has claimed that there have been weapons transferred to hezbollah through the main airports inside syria. it's not the first time we hear reports that israel has struck those airports. there's been no comment from the israeli military on that, but it really raises concerns that there could be new fronts opening up in this war. 0ur correspondent rushdi abualouf is in the southern gazan city of khan yunis, where most of the supplies have been kept in warehouses. of the 20 trucks of aid allowed in yesterday. earlier, he was at the rafah crossing. where aid trucks are coming and more are amassing. and he told us about the latest. we just left rafah crossing back in khan yunis, the place where most of the trucks that brought today are now in warehouse for the un, drop in the ocean. everybody here is describing this aid, but it's hope for 2.3 million people. a window of hope opened today after transferring those 20 trucks that are carrying essential medical kit, including portable operation room that should be placed somewhere here in this hospital soon. the meeting in the un is to make sure two things. one thing is to make the priority for this very small amount of aid. second is that to make sure that hamas is not involved in distributing or taking any of these. we understand from very early in the morning from a senior hamas source that hamas has agreed to some form of not intervening in this. they say, the crossing is open from our side and we are not going to intervene. the un will handle the distribution of the... what they have today. a very small amount of medicine and food and probably some medical equipment, but very big hope after that that egypt wants sustained, sustainable humanitarian corridor to feed those people who need in this area, especially the people in the southern part of gaza city. we are talking about two thirds of the population in this area. we understand that more than 4,500 trucks in the... on the other side of the border in egypt waiting for that meeting to finish and for the mechanism to be clear. 0nce everybody is happy with the outcome of that meeting and the outcome of the first shipment, i think tomorrow, or after tomorrow, it's a matter of time, we can see more and more goods and food are delivered. but for now, we are certain to say that nothing has been distributed. all of the 20 trucks that were loaded back—to—back on the no man's land between egypt and gaza now in warehouse for day one. we have to say that today was relatively less fighting, less air strike and less hamas rockets into israel. and there is no official ceasefire. we try to ask hamas about it. they said, we are not aware of any ceasefire. but we notice after covering two weeks of this war that today today, less fighting, today, less fire. there have been repeated demands for a humanitarian ceasefire to get aid to civilians in gaza. lieutenant colonel peter lerner, a spokesperson for the israel defence forces, updated me. on the bombing campaign. they are paying for the failed leadership of hamas. they have failed the people of gaza. our responsibility primarily is to ensure and secure the people of israel once more. we can't live in a situation where we are afraid that somebody will come over into our bedrooms and butcher our babies. that is unacceptable and it won't happen. unfortunately, unfortunately, we need to try and be persistent that hamas can never have this, wield this sword of death against our heads. we know what will happen if we do not destroy and dismantle hamas. we're not willing to raise a white flag to terrorism. we can't bow our heads to these terrorist organizations because if we do, they will chop it off. if we have a look at international law, while there is a right to defend yourself, there is also obligations to respect the rules of law, taking care of the civilian population. you say that you're listening to the united nations. they are calling for a humanitarian ceasefire. they are saying that the gaza civilians are suffering disproportionately, as aid agencies talk about collective punishment, which is illegal under international law. so would there be a humanitarian corridor, at least, that israel could guarantee for the civilians that it has sent from other parts of gaza to the south? we've sent people from the north of gaza to the south of gaza to exactly differentiate them between them and the terrorists, to get them out of harm's way. and indeed, the south of gaza is safer than the north of gaza precisely because of our operations. and i would say that we need to keep in mind that what we operate and our... we operate on the basis of the laws of armed conflict, and we are operating within that, within that realm. i was speaking to the spokesman for the israeli defense forces. time to hand over for the israeli defense forces. time to hand overfor some the israeli defense forces. time to hand over for some sports the israeli defense forces. time to hand overfor some sports news. the world of football is paying their respects to one of its best—known and most—loved players. manchester united and england legend sir bobby charlton has passed away at the age of 86, after a career filled with team trophies and individual records. a world and european champion, charlton passed away peacefully at home on saturday. he had been diagnosed with dementia three years ago. his 106 caps and 49 goals for england were records at the time. and a book of condolence has been set up at old trafford, where he played for 17 years and had been a long—time director at manchester united. when the club decided that for all he had done for manchester united was to name the south stand after him, and it was before the everton game at old trafford. and we had a lunch, and i had tojust be there and be with him as well, is one of our great players, not only for united, but for manchester city as well. and we were on our own and i saw a tear in his eye and i said, are you 0k? and this was bobby being really humble. and hejust said, oh, i don't deserve this. i said, bob, you deserve everything that comes your way for what you have done for this club, for your country and the world in football generally. and if you have seen any of the footage when he was onto the pitch with his lovely wife norma, the tears were still in his eyes because that is the kind of man he was. manchester united's players paid tribute to sir bobby ahead of kick—off at bramall lane, where they played sheffield united on saturday, with a minute's applause in his memory, as well as wearing black armbands as a sign of respect. united's next league game is the derby against manchester city at old trafford, with the match an opportunity to show how sir bobby charlton was a rare figure in football that transcended the tribal rivalry in the city. absolutely on behalf of manchester city, our condolences and especially his family. for man united and for everyone, because we have premier league that we have all the english football that we have because i think of this type of people, this type of person. make this country an incredible place to live and to play football. england coach steve borthwick sez he was immensely proud of his team after their agonising defeat to south africa in the rugby world cup semi—final. the springboks will play new zealand in the final on saturday, after coming back from a nine—point second—half deficit, eventually leading for the first time through this late handre pollard penalty. south africa held their nerve to see out the closing stages to win 16—15 in paris, preventing england from reaching a fifth final, and setting up a final between the two teams that have won the tournament a record three times. we are disappointed. we came here with a plan to win the game and we fell a little bit short. not far short, but a little bit short. so we are desperately disappointed with it. but i think as 0wen talked about there, the players should be incredibly proud of what they have done and continue to do as they represent england rugby. the two remaining unbeaten teams at the cricket world cup are meeting today in dharamsala, with hosts india taking on new zealand. these two are first and second in the standings, with new zealand narrowly ahead on run rate. india won the toss and put their opponents into bat. they struck twice early, removing devon conway for a duck and will young to make it 19 for 2. but they have rallied since. new zealand are currently 117 for 2, with 24 overs gone. you can follow that match on the bbc sport website. and that's all the sport for now. returning to the situation in gaza, we can hear now from dr hanan ashrawi, who is a veteran palestinian politician who's spent decades campainging for palestinian liberation. speaking from the palestinian city of ramallah in the west bank... she told victoria derbyshire what she thought about what's been happening in the gaza strip. absolutely. it's more than catastrophic. there is really a genocide in the making. the people are notjust besieged and bombed and homes demolished and all that, half of the people, 1.2 million, 1.2 million, are now homeless, displaced and terrified. there is no water, there is no electricity, there is no food, there is no medicine, no medical suppliers and no fuel. so they are worried that the hospitals will run out of fuel to run the generators. they have about 13,500 injured, and how can they feed them? how can they deal with them? the hospitals have been bombed. schools have been bombed. homes have been bombed. and universities have been bombed. it's incredible. this is total devastation. it's beyond catastrophe. i don't know what it is. it's a deliberate attempt at the total destruction of all requirements of a normal life. israel, the israeli government would absolutely reject that, as you know. they say they target, they are targeting hamas and their military structures, they say they do not target civilians and that they have a right to defend themselves, in the wake of the hamas massacre on israeli people. if you call that a massacre, you should see all the massacres that happened to the palestinians, if you use the logic of revenge. but certainly, since the creation of the state of israel, we have been subject as palestinians to a series of massacres. what have the actions of hamas meant for the chances of any resolution to this long—running conflict? well, we have tried several times, the pno, the national programme, everybody tried to have a negotiated settlement and it didn't work. because israel insisted on continuing with its occupation, continued with its land grab, its home demolitions, its assassinations and killing of people. and that's what really prevented any kind of peace agreement. i wonder perhaps of all the hostages, all the rest of the hostages held in gaza, were realeased immediately and unconditionally if that might help? look, we don't like to see any hostages, any civilian hostages ta ken. we, as palestinians, have been held hostage since 1967. huh? 80,000 palestinians have been killed. 1 million have been imprisoned. we consider all our prisoners hostages. we are hearing from a veteran palestinian politician speaking to us from ramallah in the west bank. earlier, i wasjoined by professor michael clarke, a former director—general of the royal united services institute. the invasion was ready a week ago, pretty well, but they have been the stalled festival by some bad weather, then by the round of diplomacy. tony blinken was in israel so you can't launch an invasion when the secretary of state is there, thenjoe biden was there at short notice. you certainly can't launch an invasion when the president is there. and then rishi sunak was there, that is not a good idea either. so the diplomatic round has finished and now we've had the release of two hostages, which is two's attempt i think to drip feed hot —— foreign hostages out of gaza so as to put pressure on israel, get america to put pressure on israel to hold off a bit longer in case we can get some more hostages out. but with 212 hostages and a good handful of apparently british, nine british individuals missing and american hostages, then they could go on drip feeding for two or three more weeks. the israelis won't play that game. they won't let hamas control the agenda. and so they are very clear that although the hostage crisis is dreadful from their point of view and will increase the international pressure on them, they won't wait. nor can they afford to wait from a military point of view. when you've got the military completely cranked up, you've either got to go stand downjust for logistical up, you've either got to go stand down just for logistical reasons, there are any number of logistics issues which means that when an invasion force is ready, it can only wait for so long before you then has to just have to withdraw ringlets, refuel trucks and the rest of it. —— withdraw units. so they will go very soon. i would withdraw units. so they will go very soon. iwould be withdraw units. so they will go very soon. i would be very surprised if we are not hours away, a couple of days away at most, because they are a week late in this from their point of view and they won't wait very much longer. and there is no question that israel doesn't tend to conduct this invasion. they say to themselves, their troops, the outside world. and the mantra of all israeli political and military leaders, it is like a toad the old roman empire, carthage must be destroyed. their mantra is, hamas must be destroyed. —— cato. michael clarke talking about israel's defence strategy and we were discussing concerns in the wider region that the increasing tension inside gaza could spread to palestinian cities in the west bank, to the north of israel, with lebanon as well. these are very tense times here and we are bringing you up—to—date. stay with us here on bbc news. hello there. part two of the weekend is looking a lot quieter than what we've had over the past few days. we have no weather warnings in force, but numerous flood warnings still remain in force, as river levels are yet to peak through today and perhaps even into tomorrow. today, then, plenty of dry weather around, lighter winds too, because we've got fewer isobars on the charts. there's yesterday's wet weather pushing north of scotland. so a lot of dry weather around through the morning, plenty of sunshine into the afternoon. it stays fine, unsettled for most of us. just the chance of a few showers continuing across parts of western scotland, northwest england, perhaps western wales and in towards south—west england. most places, though, will be dry, with variable clouds, sunny spells, continuing top temperatures, 15 or 16 degrees in the south, around 10 to 12 degrees across scotland and northern ireland. so as we head through this evening, it stays dry. there'll be a very pleasant end to the day. 0vernight, though, without cooler air mass, light winds, clear skies will be the recipe for some. mist and fog patches to develop across central northern england. scotland will also turn quite cold here, we're likely see temperatures dipping to freezing. so a touch of frost here, but less cold across the south. we start to see a weather front pushing up here. temperatures, 10 degrees in belfast, 10 or 11 across southern england. now, as we head into monday, we've got a new area of low pressure moving up from the near continent that will bring rain and wind later in the day. but monday promises to be a fine start. we should see some good spells of sunshine after that chilly morning with some early mist and fog. plenty of sunshine across northern england, scotland, but the sunshine turns hazy across england and we'll start to see some splashes of rain pushing in here later in the day. skies also turning cloudier for northern ireland, but it will be turning a bit milder 15, 16, maybe 17 degrees further north, low teens. the wet weather pushes across england and wales during monday night, in towards the north sea. but we'll see another frontal system on tuesday pushing in across the south and the west later in the day. but there will be some good spells of sunshine in between. these systems stretch from south—east england, across towards northern ireland and western scotland as temperatures low to mid—teens. but it does look like it's going to remain pretty unsettled for the rest of the week. very autumnal, low pressure systems bringing spells of wind and rain, followed by sunshine and showers. that's it for me. take care. this is bbc news, the headlines... israel warns it will intensify the attacks on gaza, before its expected ground offensive. it also says it struck a hamas cell sheltering in a west bank mosque. the un's humanitarian chief is pessimistic that a second convoy of aid will be allowed into gaza on sunday — despite further talks. ukraine says six postal workers die in a russian missile attack on kharkiv. 16 other people were injured. blood wordings are still in place across several uk region as storm babet continues its rampage. —— flood warnings are still in place. a top united nations official says he is pessimistic that aid will be allowed to enter the gaza strip on sunday. martin griffiths says negotiations had been taking place to let more trucks through the rafah crossing with egypt, but further aid deliveries were more likely to happen on monday. 20 vehicles carrying medicines and food passed through on saturday, the first since israel tightened its blockade of the territory. we can speak now to martin griffiths, who is the united nations' under—secretary general for humanitarian affairs. hejoins me from cairo. thank you for speaking to us. we saw antonio guterres the un secretary—general at the rafah crossing just a couple of days ago desperate for this aid to enter. 0nly desperate for this aid to enter. only 20 trucks so far have been allowed in. why haven't more continued to follow despite negotiations as we have been hearing? negotiations as we have unique to gaza. it is common to every conflict. we need to have a clear understood and agreed strategy. we thought we had that for today. yesterday we had a pass. president biden, god bless him, ian agreement with the prime minister of israel to allow the 20 trucks in essentially unexpected. as a first step. we thought we could get moving to with the inspected regime tracks. we still think, despite my earlier comments, we may get some in towards the end of the afternoon. i certainly hope so. we certainly rely on getting in more tomorrow. i want to stress a second thing if i may. 20 is not enough as you would be the first to tell me. we want to move that number up, inspected, successfully because we have no intention of anything other than humanitarian aid owing in obviously, to up to 100 a day. but is our aim. we have the capacity for that, the trucks for that, we have the aid for that, we can deliver that. that is the plan. figs that, we can deliver that. that is the lan. r gaza right now experiencing the conditions you are describing. i haven't actually been to gaza myself, but it is an unimaginable place to live because of the circumstances that you describe. it is also impossible for them to leave. what most people do in a crisis conflict is run, run from terror, run from danger, run to safety. in gaza there is very limited freedoms to be able to do that. gazans have relied on you when, and other agencies for many decades. now they need, this time, from all of us, all of us, the uk included, the solidarity that the deserved. what was important about the big summit yesterday met happened in egypt was that every single speaker spoke first and foremost of the need for humanitarian solidarity. martin griffiths, thank you for your time. live now to appealed for a massive aid package for the middle east as well as for ukraine. we know that he has sent two huge aircraft carriers to the region. the administration says as a warning to other powers in the region not to get involved in this conflict. what are the domestic dangers forjoe biden in getting so involved here? i dangers forjoe biden in getting so involved here?— involved here? i think the speech the president _ involved here? i think the speech the president gave _ involved here? i think the speech the president gave from - involved here? i think the speech the president gave from the - involved here? i think the speech the president gave from the oval| the president gave from the oval office, the prime—time address was anticipated, it was wanted, expected. a lot of his republican critics had said that they had not heard from the president on what is ultimate goals were for ukraine in particular in its fight against russia, so we were waiting for president biden to make a speech on why continued investment in allies is important in the us interest, and free to come after these heinous hamas attacks against israel, it gave an opportunity to link those two together. we see that in recent polls that have eitherjust before, just after his speech, a large majority of americans support israel, who support president biden in supporting israel, and we still have high numbers for us support for ukraine. and the message that president biden is putting out there and a lot of his supporters and a lot of supporters of israel and of ukraine cite the us investment in those militarys and those countries is in security interest because it keeps american bits off the ground. all the polls i think support that view, —— some of the polls. but we seejoe laura kelly, former policy reporter- these conflicts? thank you. laura kelly, former policy reporter at i kelly, former policy reporter at hill. thank you for your time. my colleague victoria derbyshire spoke to former israeli prime minister naftali bennet. she asked him what israel's current goals were. our objective is for the citizens of israel to be able to return to their homes in the south and to have the hostages released, that is our goal. we want to be able to live with security and peace, the families here in the town of sderot, tens of thousands of other families, to know that never again will they be under rockets, terror attacks etc from gaza. the implication of that is that we need to demilitarise gaza and that is the stated goal of the government. 0k. we... we are planning a counteroffensive against this hamas—isis—type organisation. we saw two us hostages released, i wonder, does a ground incursion into gaza make it less likely you will get the rest of the hostages out? well, there is no option but to eradicate hamas. if anyone has a better idea how to eradicate this hamas—isis, let me know. what i am asking, does it make it harder to get the hostages out? the hostages is one of the objectives, the other objective is to eradicate hamas, so this sort of thing can never happen again. we thought that we can contain and live side—by—side with this hamas state, that was a mistake across the board, and we are going to fix it. writing in the british press this morning the uk prime minister rishi sunak says, "palestinian people in gaza are suffering terribly at the moment." 0ur foreign secretary says the 20 aid trucks that went into gaza from egypt was a good start, will more aid be allowed in? look, the world can come and help the gazans, that's none of our business. the israeli government is allowing that sort of aid in. but my approach is humanitarian for humanitarian, it has to be reciprocal, and we right now have hundreds of israeli citizens, including five—month—old babies, held hostage, so if we are focused on humanitarian, it has to be reciprocal. that's it from me for the time being injerusalem. back to gareth barlow in the studio in london. the governor of ukraine's kharkiv region says six people have died in a russian missile strike on a postal distribution centre. more than a dozen people were injured. 0ur correspondent in kyiv, jenny hill, updated us on the situation. the regional authorities say that there were more than 20 people working at the postal facility when a missile struckjust before 10.30 last night. the dead have been taken away. they say the wounded are now being treated in hospital. the authorities say that the victims were aged between the ages of 19 and 42. we've not yet heard anything from russia. the authorities in kharkiv say this was an s300 missile and the ukrainian president volodymyr zelensky, has condemned the attack on what he says was an ordinary civilian facility. of course, russia has repeatedly denied deliberately targeting civilians, but that is exactly what the authorities in kharkiv are saying they've done overnight. and more widely, jenny, we're hearing reports that ukraine's air defence systems have destroyed russian launched drones and russian missiles. this is according to ukraine's airforce. what is the broader status of the conflict and that counter—offensive on the ukrainian side? yeah, you're quite right. 0vernight, the ukrainian airforce have said that russia launched nine cruise missiles at ukraine. they say they were able, with their air defences, to destroy one of those cruise missiles as well as six attack drones. more broadly speaking, particularly in the kharkiv region, people are well used to being under constant attack by russian forces. if you look back at this month alone in the region, in the city itself, a small boy and his grandmother were killed in an attack on a block of flats in recent days. shortly before that, more than 50 people were killed in a strike on a grocery store and cafe. people here constantly feel the pressure and the counteroffensive, as you say, is ongoing, but it is making very slow progress. territorial gains have been very limited, although we did actually have some exchanges with some front line troops who told us thatjust in the last couple of days, a bit further down in the south, they were managing to get across the dnipro river into russian occupied territory and establish a foothold there. now, that might not sound like very much. and when you considerjust how vast this front line is, perhaps it doesn't sound terribly significant. but ukrainian troops are doing their very best to fight back in what they told us are extremely challenging circumstances. people in about 500 homes in a nottinghamshire town have been urged to leave because of flooding caused by storm babet, which continues to sweep across the uk. nottinghamshire county council described a major incident in the town as they told local people they were at risk of rising water levels along the river idol which has reached record levels with what are to rise. that's a you in north—east scotland bar. there have been people doing their best to come down here and help clear up. it is only about 20 metres or so away from the river. what happened along that street is the flood defences were just overwhelmed, water came over the top into the street as well as letting this business, flooded hundreds of houses there. it has been quite quiet down here this morning because so many people are out of their homes and they probably will be out of their homes, many of them for quite some time. we have heard from people who don't have insurance. they have been back assessing the damage this morning, saying what can be saved, picking up any goods that they can to go with them. we have also heard people who live on first floor homes and they have stayed in. they have been able to stay in their homes. the problem they have is they don't have power. we were speaking to an 87—year—old woman morning. she and her husband haven't had a for the last few days. but they are ok and grateful through with vital aid, including one lorry carrying coffins into the gaza strip, but we heard earlier from a griffith the undersecretary of the united nations, he said they are working to try and get more aid through this vital crossing link between egypt and gaza. he was so full he told bbc news that there was the prospect of some aid making its way through suffering but it is hoped that up to 100 lorries a day will soon be passing through that crossing. he said they were working on a plan to allow each lorry to be searched for contraband before they enter the gaza strip in a way of appeasing the israeli authorities which do have some control over this crossing between gaza and israel. meanwhile because consider stories and pictures of the situation along the israeli and lebanese border. we have been monitoring situation here because earlier this morning we heard from the israeli authorities saying they had added a third further 14 times the evacuation plan following to protect exchanges between israel and lebanon hezbollah militant group which is usually powerful. it is said up an arsenal of 250,000 rockets. you can follow the developments on the live page on our website. the developments on the live page on ourwebsite. i the developments on the live page on our website. i am garth barlow. to stay with us. hello there. part two of the weekend looking a lot quieter than what we've had over the past few days. we have no weather warnings in force, but numerous flood warnings still remain in force as river levels are yet to peak through today and perhaps even into tomorrow. today, then, plenty of dry weather around lighter winds, too, because we've got fewer ice bars on the charts. there's yesterday's wet weather pushing north of scotland. so a lot of dry weather around through the morning, plenty of sunshine into the afternoon. it stays fine, unsettled. for most of us, it's the chance of a few showers continuing across parts of western scotland, north—west england, perhaps western wales and in towards south—west england. most places, though, will be dry variable clouds, sunny spells, continuing top temperatures, 15 or 16 degrees in the south, around 10 to 12 degrees across scotland and northern ireland. so as we head through this evening, it stays dry. there'll be a very pleasant end to the day. 0vernight, though, without cooler air, mass light winds, clear skies will be the recipe for some mist and fog patches to develop across central northern england. scotland and will also turn quite cold here, will likely see temperatures dipping to freezing. so a touch of frost here but less cold across the south. start to see a weather front pushing up here. temperatures ten degrees in belfast, ten or 11 across southern england. now, as we head into monday, we've got a new area of low pressure moving up from the near continent that will bring rain and wind later in the day. but monday promises to be a fine start. we should see some good spells of sunshine after that chilly morning with some early mist and fog. plenty of sunshine across northern england, scotland, but the sunshine turns hazy across england and we'll start to see some splashes of rain pushing in here later in the day. skies also turning cloudier for northern ireland, but it will be turning a bit milder, 15, 16, maybe 17 degrees and further north, low teens. the weather pushes across england and wales during monday night in towards the north sea. but we'll see another frontal system on tuesday pushing in across the south and the west later in the day. but there will be some good spells of sunshine in between. these systems stretch from south—east england, across towards northern ireland and western scotland as temperatures low to mid—teens. but it does look like it's going to remain pretty unsettled for the rest of the week. very autumnal low pressure systems bringing spells of wind and rain, followed by sunshine and showers. that's it for me. take care. live from jerusalem, this is bbc news israel warns it will intensify the attacks on gaza, before its expected ground offensive. it also says it struck a hamas cell sheltering in a west bank mosque. the un's humanitarian chief is pessimistic that a second convoy of aid will be allowed into gaza on sunday — despite further talks. syrian state media says israeli missiles struck international airports in damascus and aleppo. the reports say one person was killed. flood warnings are still in place across several uk regions, as storm babet continues its rampage. ukraine says six postal workers die in a russian missile attack on kharkiv. 16 other people were injured. hello. israel has confirmed that 212 people are being held hostage in gaza. rear admiral daniel hagari said that israeli strikes overnight killed dozens of palestinian fighters, including the deputy chief of hamas rocket forces. israel has been carrying out intensive aerial bombing of gaza since the hamas attacks inside israel two weeks ago,
