the risk to israeli forces when they enter the next phase of the war. translation: we'll deepen our strikes. l we'll minimise the risks to our forces in the next stages of the war, and we're going to increase the attacks from today. we'll increase the attacks, and therefore i call on gaza city residents specifically to continue moving south for their safety. well, 20 trucks carrying medicines and food were allowed to cross from egypt into gaza saturday, bringing desperately needed supplies to the territory's besieged residents. the rafah crossing has been closed since hamas carried out its bloody attack in israel two weeks ago and aid agencies say the situation in gaza is now catastrophic with the territory under siege and constant israeli bombardment. that convoy that entered gaza was carrying food, water and medicine, which have been running out. but israel refused to allow in fuel needed to power hospital generators and water pumping stations. the un says at least 100 aid trucks are needed every day to cover gaza's essential needs, and that it's negotiating for a second aid convoy of 20 to 30 trucks to be allowed into gaza on sunday. speaking at a special summit in cairo to discuss the israel—gaza war, the un secretary general, antonio guterres, said much more needed to be done for the people of gaza than the aid that was currently supplied. those trucks need to move as quickly as possible in a massive, sustained and safe way from egypt into gaza. a 20—truck convoy of the egyptian red crescent is moving today, and i want to express my deep gratitude to egypt for the essential role egypt is playing in this regard. but the people of gaza need a commitment for much, much more — a continuous delivery of aid to gaza at the scale that is needed. and we are working nonstop with all parties that are relevant to make it happen. the british prime minister, rishi sunak, has called for all water supplies to be restored to gaza wherever it is physically possible. and here in the us, president biden says his administration remains committed to ensuring that civilians in gaza will continue to have access to food, water and medical care without diversion by hamas. our correspondent, wyre davies, has the latest from tel aviv. and a warning — his report contains images you may find distressing. two weeks into this war, signs of limited progress is aid now travels between the borders of egypt. some 20 trucks in total, not nearly enough, bringing in basic supplies, food, water and medicine. many victims of the bombing are children and the humanitarian crisis is worsening. this woman and her six children are some of the many sheltering in crowded public buildings. translation: there is not even i% of the good, healthy and safe life for a child. there is no safety. if we don't die from war, we would die from epidemics and diseases. at an emergency summit on the crisis, in cairo, the foreign secretary criticised hamas*s murderous actions. i have spoken to the israeli government about the importance of preserving civilian lives in gaza. there is a reason why many israelis support what their government is now planning. a huge invasion of gaza to crush hamas. two weeks ago, this woman was a peace—loving 20 something having the time of her life in the israeli desert at a music festival. an innocence she will never recover. as squads of hamas gunmen stormed the festival, shooting indiscriminately, she fled for her life, finding cover under some desert scrub. she would hide here motionless for eight hours. i didn't think they were going to take hostages. every time i heard or saw their interaction, they were shooting, and shooting for killing. today was the first time she has ventured out, the nerves in her leg damaged by the ordeal. she believed in coexistence but she is now a frightened sceptic about the possibility of peace between israelis and palestinians. 0ur correspondent rushdi abu alouf is in the southern gazan city of khan yunis, where most of the aid supplies are stored while they are checked by united nations aid officials. earlier, he was at the rafah crossing and he told us what he saw at the border. we just left rafah crossing back in khan younis, the place where most of the, like, all of the trucks that brought today are now in warehouse for the un. drop in the ocean, everybody here is describing this aid, but it's hope that open for 2.3 million people. a window of hope opened today after transferring those 20 trucks that are carrying essential medical kit, including portable operation room that should be placed somewhere here in this hospital soon. the meeting in the un is to make sure two things. one thing is to make the priority for this very small amount of aid. second is that to make sure that hamas is not involved in distributing or taking any of these. we understand from very early in the morning from a senior hamas source that hamas has agreed to some form of not intervening in this. they say the crossing is open from our side and we are not going to intervene. the un will handle the distribution of what they have today, a very small amount of medicine and food and probably some medical equipment, but very big hope after that, that egypt want a sustained sustainable humanitarian corridor to feed those people who need in this area, especially the people in the southern part of gaza city. we are talking about two thirds of the population in this area. we understand that more than 4,500 trucks on the other side of the border in egypt waiting for that meeting to finish and for the mechanism to to be clear, once everybody is happy with the outcome of that meeting and the outcome of the first shipment, i think tomorrow or after tomorrow, so it's a matter of time, we can see more and more goods and food are delivered. but for now we are certain to say that nothing has been distributed. all of the 20 trucks that were loaded back to back on the no man's land between egypt and gaza now in warehouse for day one. we have to say that today was relatively less fighting, less air strike and less hamas rockets into israel. and there is no official ceasefire. we tried to ask hamas about it. they said we are not aware of any ceasefire. but we noticed after covering two weeks of this war that today is different today, less fighting today, less fire. the father of the freed american hostage who was seized at gunpoint by hamas told the bbc that his daughter is doing well after being held for nearly two weeks in gaza. mother and daughterjudith and natalie raanan are now the first hostages to be freed since hamas*s deadly attack on southern israel earlier this month. originally from illinois, they were in israel visiting family. hamas says they were released for humanitarian reasons. the ranaan family said the womens* release was a moment of extraordinary relief but they said they remain focused on the efforts to secure the return of eight other family members that remain captive in gaza. 0ur north america correspondent nomia iqbal is in chicago where she has been talking to family and neighbours of the released hostages. this close—knit community here in evanston, it's the suburb of chicago wherejudith and natalie are from — it's just been terrific watching the last two weeks unfold. i'm in the area where the family's local rabbi lives, and he has been leading prayers and services for them, and it's just absolute relief that they are ok. i spoke to, as you mentioned there, uri ranaan, natalie's father. he said he had a two—minute conversation with his daughter in which they didn't go into details about what her life was like in captivity. he said that she is going well. she's a tough girl. and he also told me that he had spoken to president biden after he learnt that his ex—wife and daughter were being released, and he thanked mr biden for his efforts in securing their release. hello, do it. i'm so glad you are home. we don't know exactly when that will be, but uri ranaan said that he hopes it is next week, because that's when natalie turns 18. he says it has been difficult for the community to celebrate the return because he says there are extended members still unaccounted for in gaza. a short while ago, i spoke to patrick hamilton, head of the delegation to the us and canada for the international committee of the red cross about the humanitarian situation in gaza and the release of two american hostages. welcome to you, patrick. thanks so much forjoining us. now, we know that the international committee of the red cross was involved in the release and the handover of two us hostages who were being held in gaza when that took place yesterday. can you tell us any more about the red cross*s role here and how this all came about? so thanks very much for having me on your programme, and indeed, we were able to carry out the facilitation of the release of those two hostages yesterday, which clearly is a positive sliver of hope in what's otherwise been a really devastating couple of weeks for all concerned. and clearly there remain a large number of israeli families that are still extremely concerned about the remaining hostages that are still held, captured, and for whom there is still at this stage no news, no access and no confirmation as to exactly when they will be released. the icrc, the international committee of the red cross, has this role to work as a neutral, impartial, independent humanitarian neutral intermediary in conflict. and so we have been working since the last two weeks, non—stop, at all sorts of levels, engaging with hamas, the israeli authorities and anyone else that could have, indeed, an impact on the broader humanitarian outcomes around this conflict, including on this as a top priority, to try and help these hostages in any way that we can. and so we've been seeking access to them to try and provide medications, to try and provide or facilitate messages being passed between the families and their hostages, to act as an intermediary to facilitate their release. but we've also been saying from the very beginning that the very taking of hostages is prohibited by international humanitarian law, the laws of armed conflict, and that civilians should be protected from this. an important point there to make, patrick. just as you were speaking, we were looking at images on the screen of that handover taking place with mother and daughter hand—in—hand with the red cross aid worker there, of course wearing the red cross vest. are you able to tell us anything more about how they seemed when they were released, or even a sense from the team when they were able to hand the two women over? i can't really comment on exactly the welfare, as it were, or the state of the two hostages. i think that our team, as the rest of us, were just simply extremely relieved that they were being released and that this opportunity had come up — that we could play some kind of role in trying to help them and the sides come to a conclusion on their fate and, of course, for theirfamilies, who had been worried absolutely sick about them for the last two weeks. so, we were extremely pleased that this took place and, of course, against this backdrop of this really devastating situation and conflict of the last two weeks, it was that first small sliver of hope that means so much to them as individuals and their families but also, as a symbol of a first positive, small step in this otherwise immense situation of suffering for so many. absolutely, patrick. i want to touch a little bit more on the humanitarian situation there on the ground because, of course, as you know, a convoy of 20 trucks getting in today. the message from the united nations that that isn't nearly enough. just talk to us about the needs of the people there on the ground right now in gaza. that's right. i mean, i think it's clear that this is, indeed, on the one hand, a very positive step that this has happened, that there has been a small amount of aid that has been able to make its way here to gaza today but it is, indeed, a drop in the ocean, as the un have been saying and you've got 650,000 people that are in desperate need of access to some kind of fresh water. the hospital and health infrastructure and system is really on its knees. doctors have been working in this health infrastructure non—stop for the last two weeks with — having to try and deal with immense numbers of wounded coming in. they themselves don't know what's been happening to their own families, they haven't been able to check on them, and some of them are beginning to break down. turning to the us response to the conflict, and in the past hour, the pentagon has confirmed that washington is sending a terminal high altitude area defense system and additional patriot air defence missile system battalions to the middle east. defense secretary lloyd austin said they're deploying the missile defence systems to protect us forces in the region in response to "recent escalations by iran and its proxy forces." secretary austin also said he was placing additional troops on prepare—to—deploy order. the pentagon has already placed some 2,000 troops on a heightened state of readiness in case they need to deploy to the region. this, as the white house publishes details of the billions of military aid it is asking the us congress to authorise. in a letter sent to the acting speaker of the house of representatives, president biden*s budget chief laid out a raft of measures totalling nearly $106 billion. the president announced the package in a rare oval office address on thursday evening in which he sought to draw a link between hamas*s attack on israel, and russia's war on ukraine, and asked the american people to keep backing both countries as they defend themselves. more than 60% of the $106 billion that mr biden has requested is actually earmarked to aid for ukraine's military. israel's military would get a far smaller chunk — $14.3 billion. in both cases, the money also goes to replenishing the us*s own stocks of weapons when they are sent to allies. the package also includes humanitarian aid — $9.2 billion in total for ukraine and for gaza. to discuss this, earlier i spoke to kay bailey hutchison, former united states permanent representative to nato. ambassador, thank you for being with us here on the bbc. i want to begin by getting your thoughts on the $105 billion package that the biden administration wants congress to sign off on, both with funding for ukraine and israel. what did you make of that move, then, by the president to tie the two together in one package, and also put money for the southern border, as well, in that plan? i think it is exactly the right thing to do. i'm sure the amount will be negotiated. i think assuring that we replenish our own reserves will be an important message to our potential adversaries that we are going to replenish our own arms, so that we're ready for any eventuality, in case anyone thinks they can move in on this crisis that is happening both in ukraine and in israel. and i think, looking at the southern border, which has been woefully overrun, is an important add and i am glad did the president added that. i think that ukraine and israel are vital security interests for the united states, as well as for our allies in nato. ambassador, so we know that is the plan on paper — and i stress on paper. i'm wondering if you think domestic politics with a house being without a speaker, impacting international politics and, in turn, the time that the us can support giving to its allies. i think there will be a speaker, i think it will happen, and the vast majority of republicans and democrats very much support and understand the stakes in ukraine and in israel. they are vital security interests for our populations and for the uk population and all of our nato allies and our nato partners. we have 31 allies, we have a0 partners, so it's very important that we speak with one voice, that we are not going to stand by and let ukraine be taken over by russia. they are a sovereign nation. and that we are going to stand with israel that has had a horrendous attack by hamas and i think the israel government is now saying that hamas must be wiped out. it is a terrorist organisation. it is recognised as that by all of our governments. and it is time that we started looking towards what was in the works between israel and saudi arabia, along with our other allies in the middle east, to try and have a two—state solution for the palestinian people and try to stop the terrorism that continues to foment by iran. i just want to ask about what we're seeing from the right for republicans were we've seen some support for ukraine dropping off. what you think the kremlin will making of that debate playing out here in the united states about funding dropping for ukraine? what you think the potential consequences could be about the fact that this debate is playing out so openly in the united states. of course, we are a democracy and we are open — when we disagree, we all know that, but there's no question that the leadership and the majority of the republicans as well as the democrats support ukraine, understand the stakes for our country. if we don't stand up for ukraine, if we don't help ukraine win this war, then the consequences are that putin will try then to recreate another part of the lost soviet union and it will be a nato ally possibly, and that means all of us will then have to put troops on the ground and take — it would be much more expensive than the money we are now spending together now. and i think that the leadership in the republican party understands these stakes and i think it will be a — i can't say unanimous but certainly, a overwhelming majority that will support ukrainian and israeli aid. thousands of people have taken part in pro—palestinian protests in several cities across the world. police say that up to 100,000 people took part in a pro—palestinian march in london. 10 people were arrested, most for public order offences. the co—organisers, the palestine solidarity campaign, called for an immediate ceasefire in gaza and for full humanitarian aid to be sent in. the march finished outside downing street. police had earlier warned that that anyone showing support for hamas would face arrest. and here in washington on saturday, pro—palestinian demonstrators marched from the washington monument to the us capitol, also calling for an immediate ceasefire in gaza. the protest was one of several planned in cities across the us this weekend. at least six people were killed and 1a injured in the kharkiv region in eastern ukraine. according to ukrainian officials, a russian missile hit a postal distribution centre belonging to a private delivery company. the victims were civilians working there. president zelensky has expressed condolences and blamed russia for the attack. the frontrunner in argentina's presidential election has reaffirmed his determination to adopt the us dollar as legal tender if he wins sunday's poll. javier milei said the move would bring economic stability. argentina has one of the highest inflation rates in the world. storm babet continues to batter the uk with rain and flooding as a major clean—up operation is now under way in england. another danger to life with a warning has been issued. tributes have been paid to one of england's greatest footballers, sir bobby charlton, who's died at the age of 86. he held goal—scoring records for manchester united and england for decades, and was one of the last survivors of england's 1966 world cup winning team. england's current manager, gareth southgate, said that the world of football would unite in its sadness at losing an undisputed legend. bobby was diagnosed with dementia in 2020. and remember, for the very latest on the israel—gaza war, you can head over to our website. that's bbcnews.com. or check out our app. we have a live page constantly updated by our correspondents in israel, gaza and around the world. stay with us here on bbc news. that's all from us here in washington. we leave you with these live pictures of london as we hand over to our colleagues there. goodnight from us. hello. although storm babet is now easing away, we'll continue to see flooding and disruption over the next day or so. now, let's just take a look at where the rain has fallen over the past 2a hours. it's been heavy and persistent across parts of england, wales, and particularly for northern and eastern scotland, too. if we have a look atjust how much rain has fallen since wednesday with this storm babet, many areas have seen between 100 and 200mm. now, for places, that's almost twice the expected monthly rainfall. thankfully, though, sunday is looking drier with lighter winds, too, so a window of much quieter weather on the way. for the rest of the overnight period through into the early hours of monday, still a few showers around across the far north of scotland, one or two in the west. elsewhere, 2—9 degrees are overnight lows for most of us. could be a touch cooler first thing in the countryside. but the low pressure that's been such a troublemaker over recent days is drifting away towards the north on sunday. the isobars become more widely spaced, showing that it's not going to be as windy as it has been — the breeze just coming in from a westerly direction. so, that'll bring one or two showers for northwest scotland, perhaps a few for wales, the southwest of england as well. but as they drift eastwards, they tend to ease away, so much drier, thankfully, for eastern scotland, right down towards east anglia in the southeast. a largely dry day towards northern ireland, too, and temperatures ranging between around about ten for stornoway to about 16 down towards the london region. but then, we will see the next area of low pressure just moving in later on monday. now, this is storm bernard. it's been named by the portuguese weather service and it's going to bring the next spell of wet and windy weather on monday. so, we start off monday on a dry note. some mist and some fog patches. could be a touch of frost. but it clouds over from the south and during the afternoon, this area of rain will spill its way in. to the north of that, most places looking dry, around about 10—16 degrees, but the wet and the windy weather in the south willjust push its way a little bit further north. so, into tuesday, you can see where we're expecting to see some showers around, turning a little bit breezy again towards the east coast. a bit of uncertainty exactly where this rainfall is going to be by this stage but could be quite unwelcome for some of us. turning a little bit milder as we see the rain coming in from the south after that window of drier weather for some of us sunday into monday. things really are looking fairly autumnal and unsettled through much of the week ahead. bye for now. absolutely, patrick. v0|ce—0ver: this is bbc news. we'll have the headlines for you at the top of the hour, which is straight after this programme. hello and welcome to unspun world. at a time when, in the words of antony blinken, the american secretary of state, the middle east is in danger of slipping into war or, as king abdullah ofjordan put it even more starkly, the whole region is on the brink of falling into the abyss, how worried should we be? if there are shocking scenes, heartbreaking — even more heartbreaking than now — coming out of gaza, they will feel honour bound to do something. to what extent is iran pulling the strings in gaza and lebanon? hezbollah is a militant group. they have their own weapon, they have their own armies and they have their sole decision that is basically coming from iran, and they're acting upon that. and china. ten years after the belt and road initiative, is the world's most impressive economy in danger of hitting the buffers? i think china's got a big struggle to come, and the big
