but israel refused to allow in fuel, which is needed to power hospital generators and water pumping stations. the un says at least 100 aid trucks are needed every day to cover gaza's essential needs. israel sealed its borders with gaza, imposing a total blockade on the strip 12 days ago following the hamas attack on israel in which 1,400 people were killed. the rafah crossing between egypt and gaza is now the only way to get vital supplies in. a warning: this report from wyre davies contains images you may find distressing. two weeks after the start of this war, the first signs of limited progress and relief entering gaza on the back of a truck. some 20 trucks in total, not nearly enough according to aid agencies. bringing in basic supplies, food, water, and medicine. there have been an unprecedented number of israeli strikes against hamas—related infrastructure, but palestinian authorities say 4000 people have been killed in gaza, many of them children. a small but significant breakthrough as us israeli mother and daughter were freed from hamas captivity in gaza, though 200 hostages remain. at an emergency summit in cairo, the foreign secretary criticised hamas' murderous actions, and reminded israel of its obligations. i have spoken directly to the israeli government about their duty to respect international law, and the importance of preserving civilian lives in gaza. despite this relatively small diplomatic breakthroughs, most analysts say they will not change the inevitable course of events. israel, they say, is facing an existential crisis, and that must remain the country's number one priority. i think that there's quite determined decision that we cannot, cannot stop here, will not agree to any ceasefire, and in order to achieve the goal, which is a quite ambitious goal, to dismantle hamas from all its military capabilities, we will have to start a ground operation sooner or later, and we are not going to stop before such a goal is achieved. there is a reason that israelis, old and young, are so adamant about this. two weeks ago, this woman was a peace—loving 20—something having the time of her life at a festival in the israeli desert. it is an innocence she'll never recover. as squads of hamas gunmen stormed the festival, shooting indiscriminately, she fled for her life, finding cover under some desert scrub. she would hide motionless there for eight hours. i did not know they were going to take hostages. every time i hear or see the interaction, they shoot, and they shooot for killing. october the 7th will go down as the most fateful day in modern israeli history, as hamas gunmen mercilessly murdered at least 1,400 people of all ages in towns and communities across israel. today was the first time almog has ventured out in two weeks, the nerves in her leg damaged by her ordeal. from someone who believed in coexistence, she is now a frightened sceptic about the idea of peace between israelis and palestinians. wyre davies, bbc news, tel aviv. earlier we spoke to our correspondent paul adams in jerusalem. he says there's hope more aid will be allowed into gaza now that 20 trucks have been allowed in. interesting. we have not heard anything today to suggest this is going to continue yet. they saw no reason why it should not but at the moment i hear nothing — no concrete plans for aid to continue tomorrow. we may wake up tomorrow and find the 150 or so trucks lined up outside the rafah crossing are starting to move and that will be extremely welcome if they do. as you have just heard — this 20 trucks makes practically no difference at all to the absolutely dire and increasingly dire situation that exists in the gaza strip at the moment. aid officials say we need 200, 300 trucks a day, particularly if they have to carry water, a very bulky thing to transport. there is a hope but not as far as i am aware a concrete plan yet for this to continue. also today, this so—called peace summit in cairo with various representatives from middle eastern countries, no one from israel, iran or the us either. what were the results from that? it would be pretty remarkable if israel, iran and the united states had gathered at the same place at the same time. it was a hastily organised summit by the egyptian leader, abdel fattah el—sisi. it had various notable absences. the americans were only represented by their charge d'affaires in cairo. tells you the americans didn't think it was probably worth attending. it was an opportunity for arab leaders to voice some of their very grave concerns about the way this crisis is going. the egyptian president is extremely anxious and has been saying so for days about the possibility palestinians might be forced out of the gaza strip and into the sinai peninsula, something he says will be extremely dangerous. others like the king ofjordan has spoken about the fact that what we are witnessing at the moment in gaza, what has been going on the last couple of weeks is an inevitable result of the international community taking its eyes off the peace process for decades and letting the situation drift. it was an opportunity for getting things off their chest. no agenda, no final declaration, no plan. in some ways, it didn't really serve much of a purpose. i am nowjoined by melanie ward, chef executive of medical aid for palestinians charity. what details do you have if any of their work might contain today, what helper could offer? the match there was an extended minute's silence as fans paid their respects to the club legend. sir bobby charlton, who's died at the age of 86. now england are in involved in a rugby world cup semi final against the defending champions, south africa with the two sides competing for a place in next weekend's final against new zealand. england are controlling the tempo of the game and had a half time lead of 12—6. egnlad aiming to knock out the defending champioms amd reach a fifth world cup final — start of the second half it's still 12—6. england's defence of their cricket world cup title is hanging by a thread after they were thrashed by south africa by 229 runs in mumbai. reeza hendricks got the south africa off to a strong start but it was heinrich klaasen*s century that helped them to 399 for seven. in response, england never got started. ben stokes was out forfive on his return. a late partnership between gus atkinson and mark wood spared further blushes bu england were bowled out for 170 by an impressive south africa ande left staring at an early exit. england face former champions, sri lanka next who secured their first win of the tournament in beating the netherlands. chasing 262 to win, sri lnka got to their target with almmost a couple of overs to spare, sadeera samara—wickrama top scoring with 91 as they won by 5 wickets. there was another penalty in the game between england and south africa. it is now england 15, south africa. it is now england 15, south africa six. and that's all the sport for now. it's exactly two weeks since hamas launched its unprecedented attack on southern israel. earlier i spoke to anne feingold, who lives in netanya in israel. she has four sons. two in england and two who are now in the israeli army. i asked her about the situation in israel now, and her hopes for the future. israel at the moment has stopped, has come to a halt really. so this is the third sabbath now that we've had since the dreadful hamas attack. so every day has been very long. we've had in netanya, all the people from the south have now moved to all the hotels and people's homes if they have spare rooms or spare flats or any vacancy. all the children and the full families have all moved up from the south. everyone is very involved in providing any health care that they need, any day to day stuff food, laundry. and the whole country has now mobilised into a volunteering stage, knowing that these families need practical stuff, even though they are traumatised from having left the south and in the kibbutzim that were involved in the onslaught on october the seventh. so the country is very sad, very different and. the men generally are not here. it's the men have all been called up to to to duty. so it's very much the wives looking after the kids and the grandparents. and there's a huge volunteering cohort now being involved to support and the people from the south and now also from the north. so israel is a very changed place. it's a very hard place to be at the moment and it's a small country. so everybody has been affected by it. and there's a lot of funerals to go to of young people. i myself, unfortunately, have had to go to one. so it's not the country that we that was before. that we, that was before. it's a very sad place. and we are also dreading what is going to come now as well, knowing that israel has to defend itself. and everybody knows that, nobody wanted it, but it came to israel's door. and this is where we are holding our breath at the moment and trying to just make — just to live day by day. ann, you're originally from manchester. two of your sons, as i mentioned in the introduction, are in the israeli army. what are your thoughts? what are your hopes? what are your fears now going forward? as you said, the country awaits what is expected to be an israeli offensive going into gaza. so my two sons, i have one who's 22 and one who's 28. the 28—year—old is married, but he was called up on on a military duty, which is for older people who've served in the army. and my younger one is actually active at the moment as well. and my thoughts as any mother, it's any mother's nightmare. but they came to this country. they love this country. they felt connected to thejewish homeland. and they felt they wanted to live here asjewish boys. and they love the culture. they love the lifestyle. and they knew being here, part of actually living here is to actually defend the country. and that was the commitment that they made. and they gave me a lot of strength knowing that this is the choice that they made and the country that they chose to live in. and part of that was actually being was partly being in the army. nobody wanted this, normal children who want to go to cafes, study. alex, my son, who's married, wants to obviously be with his wife, but they will have changed. but they also know as because they have served in the army, that this is what they have to do. they have to defend the state of israel, the country that they want to live in, to bring up their children, to work here. and unfortunately, that's come at a difficult price at the moment. a reminder of our main story — a group of un agencies has called for a ceasefire and unrestricted humanitarian access to the gaza strip after 20 trucks carrying aid arrived in the territory on saturday. the us secretary of state, antony blinken, urged israel and egypt to allow the rafah crossing from egypt to remain open to allow sustained supply of aid. the israeli military has said it's to step up its strikes on gaza to put further pressure on hamas militants there. stay with us here on bbc news. hello. some parts of the country have had between 100 and 200 millilitres of rain. the exact figures have still yet to be verified, but they have been exceptional. now, the red warning has expired from eastern scotland, but the amber warning for heavy rain is still valid in the north of scotland. we have to wait a little while before this weather front completely clears away and i think by this stage, already, we'll be experiencing better weather conditions in the east of scotland. actually, across many parts of the uk, it's a case of generally clear weather, dry weather through the night. and it's also going to turn quite chilly, perhaps murky, misty in a few places. the early—morning temperatures on sunday will be two in aberdeen, about that in newcastle. but i think in most bigger towns and cities, closer to around five to perhaps nine celsius. now, the troublesome low that has brought all of that mayhem is now moving away to the north. this is the weather map for sunday, and we're actually in—between weather systems — so some decent weather, i'm very pleased to say, on the way. from morning onwards, a lot of bright, if not sunny, weather. yes, there will be a few showers here and there, but nothing compared to what we've had in the last few days. so overall, a bright day, if not sunny day for most of us, and much, much better across scotland. look at that, sunshine and 11 degrees there in aberdeen. but sunday into monday, the next area of low pressure approaches and this one will reach southern parts of the uk. and also, another weather front will reach northern ireland, too. so, through the early hours of monday, the next weather front approaches, whereas many parts of the country wake up to sunshine. and it's going to be a very decent day across scotland in terms of the weather. northern england also fairly bright. but across the south, the next spell of rain is approaching. and, in fact, that weather front will be sweeping northwards across monday night. and the outlook is looking very unsettled across the uk, with the risk of further heavy rain and also gale—force winds right across the country. so a very unsettled outlook on the way. bye— bye. this is bbc news. the headlines... israel's military says it is stepping up its air strikes on gaza — to put further pressure on hamas — ahead of a possible major ground offensive. the un says it's negotiating for a second convoy of aid to be allowed into gaza on sunday. 20 truckloads crossed from egypt earlier — the first since israel imposed a total siege on the strip. one of england's greatest footballers, and manchester united legend, sir bobby charlton, dies at the age of 86. and storm babet continues to batter parts of the uk , to batter parts of the uk, bringing high winds, severe flooding and *risk to life* warnings. in the last hour we*ve received a statement from president biden on the delivery of humanitarian aid to gaza. earlier i spoke to our north america correspondent shingai nyoka. i asked her about president biden*s statement. in that statement, he attributed the opening of that border to — that border crossing — to the result of days of high level negotiations, and also expressed his appreciation to egyptian president al—sisi as well as to president. as well as to president—— prime minister netanyahu. an earlier statement by this department of the state department and antony blinken had also attributed the success in opening this border crossing to what they said days of exhaustive us diplomatic engagement in the region, as well as the visit by president biden. and so the us is really looking at this as a success as a result of its recent visit. and we*re just looking at these pictures of people out on the streets in washington, the washington monument. what has the reaction been across the united states to president biden*s vocal support of israel, but also his continued efforts to get that aid into gaza? well, what we*ve seen over the last week or so, just growing numbers of people that are expressing concern about the fate of palestinians. so these are not necessarily pro—hamas protests, protests or demonstrations. they in fact, many of the people that i spoke to when i went out a couple of days ago condemned the hamas attacks. and they also are condemning the deaths on both sides. they are saying that especially the groups that support palestine are saying that the us is not really focusing as much on palace ——on the palestinian situation as it is on israel. but what we*ve seen from president biden isjust an increasing emphasis on his concerns for what*s happening in gaza and trying to ensure, as we*ve seen, that the aid and the humanitarian assistance that*s needed gets to where it*s going. but i mean, i think generally the us is in support of israel that the majority of people want to see israel defend itself. but what we*re seeing increasingly are just these pockets of resistance calling for a de—escalation and a ceasefire. and this time yesterday we were seeing those pictures of the two american women who were released by hamas after negotiations. there are still other americans being held by the organization proscribed as a terrorist organisation, of course by the us, the uk and other countries. is there any word on those people? no. what we have heard from antony blinken yesterday, was that they are aware that there are hostages that are being held, as well as about ten american citizens that are unaccounted for. but they really wouldn*t go into the details of what negotiations are happening, although we do know that those are happening. they wouldn*t even attribute the qatari government, which has been instrumental, we understand, in getting the release of these two hostages. but the us has a lot of work ahead. and in his statement today, president biden alluded to the fact that they also are trying to get us citizens that are in gaza across the border. and so those discussions are still under way. many of these american citizens have been at that rafah crossing for days, unaware and unable really to move from places of danger to places of safety. the metropolitan police say up to a hundred thousand people "palestinian terrorists are fighting for their freedom." meta has told the bbc it has fixed the issue that, in their words, briefly caused inappropriate arabic translations in some of its products. they also told the bbc that they sincerely apologise that this happened. meta is also facing accusations that it*s been shadow banning pro—palestinian content. now, shadow banning is when a platform reduces the visibility of a user*s account or their content on the platform. but that usually happens when a user has fallen foul of the community guidelines. meta earlier this week did acknowledge that there was a bug affecting their stories feature — those are those posts that only last 24 hours. and in a statement they said this bug affected accounts equally around the globe and had nothing to do with the subject matter of the content. they also said that they fixed that bug as soon as possible, but this isn*t the first time that they faced accusations of shadow banning pro—palestinian content. in fact, last year, the model bella hadid made similar claims about her own content that was pro—palestinian. and even before that, in 2021, when meta was facing similar allegations, it asked for an independent review of its moderation of the conflict that year. and this is what that review found. it found that meta*s actions did have an adverse human rights impact on the rights of palestinian users to freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, political participation and non—discrimination. but the review did not find that there was any intentional racial or political bias on meta*s part. now, instagram has released a transparency tool that allows you to check if your instagram account has any restrictions placed upon it. and we have a whole how—to about that on our website, so please do check it out. storm babet has continued to batter many parts of the uk, bringing torrential rain, flooding and severe disruption. navtej johal reports from derbyshire, where three *risk to life* warnings have been issued. when the river derwent went overboard. this is a walkway in derby city centre, more suitable for wading. the river burst its banks overnight, flooding the city and weaving locals stunned. the people of derby have never seen anything like this before. the river has reached record high level, and this building is currently underwater. it is devastating. we woke up to this this morning. a lot of upset members of staff. and here we are. we are closed. we don*t know how long for, and it is really, really difficult to take. three severe flood warnings have been in place for the river derwent and derbyshire today, the only place in england who where this has happened. the impact is being felt up the road as well. it isjust sad because we are a community football club, and we should have been playing today, we work all week, we worked hard, and we come here to play football. storm babet has also continued causing problems elsewhere. in this south yorkshire village, homes were evacuated. people also had to leave flooded properties in chesterfield last night, where the water continued to cause havoc. a village in nottinghamshire also felt the brunt of storm babet. meanwhile in powys, the county council warned people to be ready to leave their homes. the flooding has also caused serious issues on public transport. king*s cross station in london closed due to overcrowding, and several rail services have experienced severe disruption. the good news is that the flood water is receding in many places, but this has been the type of weather event that will take more than just a clean—up to get over. navteonhal, bbc news. the situation is improving in the area of scotland hardest hit by the storm. a red danger to life warning in angus and aberdeenshire has now ended, but there are fears of further flooding. 0ur scotland editorjames cook has the latest. this is what storm babet did to brechin. the coastguard and other agencies rescued scores of people here. hundreds of homes and businesses were swamped. it looks worse today. it*s just... it*sjust mud. george wilson and his dog bailey got out in time, but returned to find the family home looking like this. i*m devastated for myself. we*ve got to think of other folk as well, out in the country. scary. it*s scary in the dark. yes, that*s the worst thing. the deluge swept away this wall on the south esk river. frustrated by the official response, locals have taken repairs into their own hands. a few miles away in marykirk, they*ve been searching for a missing man after reports that he was trapped in his vehicle. repairs here will take time. and there*s disruption further afield, too, with trunk roads, bus services, and railways all affected. well, the situation remains very serious and precarious, and we also know that there is always a delayed reaction between improving weather conditions and the risk of flood. there*s another one! get out the way! this video, filmed near dundee, is a reminder of the dangers that persist with dozens of flood alerts and warnings still in place. in inverurie, the emergency services have been going door to door, warning people to be ready in case an evacuation order is issued. and this is why. well, the rain just keeps falling here in aberdeenshire, and this is the result. this is the don, which, as you can see from that picnic table, has already spilled over its banks, and the prediction is that this will get even higher. james cook, bbc news, inverurie. pakistan*s former prime minister, nawaz sharif, has returned home, after four years of self—imposed exile in london. this was the moment he touched down — days after a court granted him protective bail, removing the threat of immediate arrest over his corruption conviction. his return is seen as the launch of his party*s political campaign ahead of elections next year. 0ur pakistan correspondent, caroline davies, was on the plane with mr sharif. i*m in the city of lahore where nawaz sharif has now arrived. he took a helicopter from the airport where he flew in from dubai on to the rally that he is addressing. we know that his party had been told to bring out large numbers, big crowds for this rally. and the city of lahore as well has been preparing for this arrival. you can see the banners behind me and posters all bearing nawaz sharif*s face. has been a countdown of the 21st of october. now, this is the moment earlier on board that flight from dubai to here in pakistan. this is the point at which they touch down. now, this is the first time that we*ve been back in pakistan for nearly four years. you can see his supporters cheering him. nawaz sharif has been a prime minister in pakistan on three separate occasions. the first time he was ousted, the second time he was overthrown by a military coup. a third time he resigned, subsequently found guilty on corruption charges and thrown into prison. and he was imprisoned. he asked to leave to be able to get medical treatment. that was near the end of 2019. and this is the first time that he*s come back again. in nearly four years. now those charges still sad. that jail sentence still stands and he is currently on temporary bail. we will hear more about that during the course. all this week. why is all of this significant? well, many analysts believe that nawaz sharif would not be back in pakistan if he had not got some form of agreement from the powerful military establishment. now, that is the same military establishment that the analysts say that nawaz sharif fell out with the last time he left the country. that is a significant move and significant change for him. meanwhile, his main political opponent imran khan. disqualified and still in prison at the moment. many people believe that today*s arrival of nawaz sharif means that many much of the campaigning here in preparation for the general election will start to build up that general election. there is no set date yet but is expected to take place at the end of january. a reminder of our main story — a group of un agencies has called for a ceasefire and unrestricted humanitarian access to the gaza strip after 20 trucks carrying aid arrived in the territory on saturday. the us secretary of state, antony blinken, urged israel and egypt to allow the rafah crossing from egypt to remain open to allow sustained supply of aid. the israeli military has said it*s to step up its strikes on gaza to put further pressure on hamas militants there. army spokesman admiral daniel hagari told reporters the increase was also intended to minimize danger to israeli forces as they prepare to enter the next phase of the war. some breaking news, and south africa will play new zealand in next weekend*s rugby world cup final in paris. the holders havejust beaten england in a closely contested semifinal — winning by 16 points to 15. a late penalty gave south africa a a victory in their semifinal, plenty more details on our website. do stay with us here on bbc news, i will be back very shortly with more on the conflict in the middle east. thanks for watching. hello. some parts of the country have had between 100 and 200 millilitres of rain. the exact figures have still yet to be verified, but they have been exceptional. now, the red warning has expired from eastern scotland, but the amber warning for heavy rain is still valid in the north of scotland. we have to wait a little while before this weather front completely clears away and i think by this stage, already, we*ll be experiencing better weather conditions in the east of scotland. actually, across many parts of the uk, it*s a case of generally clear weather, dry weather through the night. and it*s also going to turn quite chilly, perhaps murky, misty in a few places. the early—morning temperatures on sunday will be two in aberdeen, about that in newcastle. but i think in most bigger towns and cities, closer to around five to perhaps nine celsius. now, the troublesome low that has brought all of that mayhem is now moving away to the north. this is the weather map for sunday, and we*re actually in—between weather systems — so some decent weather, i*m very pleased to say, on the way. from morning onwards, a lot of bright, if not sunny, weather. yes, there will be a few showers here and there, but nothing compared to what we*ve had in the last few days. so overall, a bright day, if not sunny day for most of us, and much, much better across scotland. look at that, sunshine and 11 degrees there in aberdeen. but sunday into monday, the next area of low pressure approaches and this one will reach southern parts of the uk. and also, another weather front will reach northern ireland, too. so, through the early hours of monday, the next weather front approaches, whereas many parts of the country wake up to sunshine. and it*s going to be a very decent day across scotland in terms of the weather. northern england also fairly bright. but across the south, the next spell of rain is approaching. and, in fact, that weather front will be sweeping northwards across monday night. and the outlook is looking very unsettled across the uk, with the risk of further heavy rain and also gale—force winds right across the country. so a very unsettled outlook on the way. bye— bye. live from london. this is bbc news. israel*s military says it is stepping up its airstrikes on gaza — to put further pressure on hamas — ahead of a possible major ground offensive. the un says it*s negotiating for a second convoy of aid to be allowed into gaza on sunday. twenty truckloads crossed from egypt earlier — the first since israel imposed a total siege on the strip. one of england*s greatest footballers, and manchester united legend — sir bobby charlton — dies, at the age of 86. and storm babet continues to batter parts of the uk — bringing high winds, severe flooding and *risk to life* warnings. hello, i*m samantha simmonds. the un says it*s negotiating for a second aid convoy of 20 to 30 trucks to be allowed into gaza on sunday, earlier, 20 trucks crossed into the strip from egypt — the first since israel began its total siege of gaza 12 days ago. 4,385 people have been killed there in the last two weeks according to the hamas—run gaza health ministry — more than 1,700 of them children. and israel says it is now preparing to step up its attacks on gaza to increase the pressure on hamas. the convoy which entered gaza was carrying food, water and medicine, which have been running out in gaza. but israel refused to allow in fuel, which is needed to power hospital generators and water pumping stations.
