The Rafah Crossing between egypt and gaza is now the only way to allow vital supplies in. Our reporter Rushdi Abualouf has the latest from the crossing. 20 trucks are carrying food, medicine, and we understand Operation Room for the Nasser Hospital in khan yunis. This convoy is the first 20 trucks that crossed from coming from the egyptian side to the palestinian side today. This is a window of hope for 2. 3 Million People who are stuck without food, medicine or essential water, all of the essential needs, stuck in gaza. Today, there is a little bit of hope that this corridor is open and functioning. Once the mechanism of distributing this food is in place, more trucks will come from this direction, from the egyptian side. We understand that 4,000 trucks full of food, medicine and some say a field hospital, are on the other side of the border. Israel wants to make sure that hamas is not involved in this. The bbc was told by a Senior Hamas Official today that hamas is aware of those trucks and they are happy with the mechanism that egypt is putting in place. And they will not involve in distributing or deciding who will get this aid, as long as they are going to the people who need. The palestinian side of the crossing is open and hamas is welcoming any aid in. So today is significant. Since two weeks, gaza was without food and medicine. Today is significant, we have seen a window of hope, a window of food and medicine for gaza. This is a drop in the ocean, but more to come if the mechanism in place, everybody is happy with. That was Rushdi Abualouf, who has been reporting for us from gaza. Israel has continued to bombard gaza including the south, where it had told people to seek safety, ahead of an expected ground offensive. The Palestinian Health Ministry Says a585 people have now been killed in gaza since israel began its air strikes following the hamas attack two weeks ago. 1,756 of the dead are children, 976 are women. More than 1,400 people were killed when hamas attacked southern israel. Israel says 307 of its soldiers have been killed since then and its raised the number of Hostages Hamas took to 210. 0ur middle east correspondent tom bateman reports from jerusalem. After a ten day wait, the lorries carryinog desperately needed water, food and medicine finally began rolling into gaza this morning. A glimmer of hope delivered on the back of a lorry. 20 trucks have come in, thanks to the un, says this aid worker, among those who have been waiting on the border with egypt. The aid deal was brokered by the us. Egypt called for the israelis to stop bombing the crossing. Israel wanted guarantees the supplies couldnt be stolen by hamas. This is a start but aid groups say much more is needed. Medical needs in gaza are huge. So what we need a sustained aid access. We have more supplies coming from egypt and, hopefully, we will be able to ship them because the more we wait, the more lives will be lost and situations are getting desperate in hospitals in gaza. Israels bombardment went on this morning, while palestinian rockets were fired from the strip. Gazas humanitarian crisis is deepening. This woman is sheltering with her six children in a school building. Translation there is not even 1 of a good, healthy and safe life for a child. There is no safety. If we dont die from war, we will die from epidemics and diseases. Meanwhile, the family of two american hostages released in Gaza Last Night spoke of theirjoy. Natalie and her Motherjudith Raanan were handed over to the red cross and received by the israeli army. They are the first captives to be freed. Their family said they were thinking of all the others. Singing. More than 200 people, including children and the elderly, are still being held hostage by hamas. Israel has said it will maintain its siege until they are freed. For their loved ones, last nights release may bring some hope, a faint light in the darkness of war. Tom bateman, bbc news, jerusalem. Many arab leaders have condemned israel for what they called the collective punishment of civilians in gaza. They have been speaking at a peace summit currently taking place in cairo. Weve also heard from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas hes head of the palestinian authority, which has control over areas of the occupied west bank, but not the hamas run gaza strip. He used his opening remarks to say that palestinians will not be forced off their land. Translation we warn against any i attempts to displace our people i in gaza beyond its borders. We also warn against any evictions of palestinians from their homes, or displacement from jerusalem or the west bank. We will not accept displacement. We will remain steadfast on our land, no matter the challenges. Meanwhile. The un secretary general, antonio guterres, described the Scene At Rafah Crossing as a Human Catastrophe after his visit on friday. As we focus on ending the bloodshed, we can cannot lose sight of the only solution for peace and stability, a two State Solution. Israel must see their need realised and palestinians must see their aspiration for an independent state realised in line with the United Nations resolutions, International Law and previous agreements. The time has come for action. Action to end this god awful nightmare and action to build a future worthy of the dreams of the children of palestine, israel, the region and the whole world. Egyptian president Abdel Fattah Al sisi told leaders at that summit that the aim is to end the humanitarian disaster in the gaza strip and to revive a path to peace between israel and the palestinians. Translation | invited you all here today so we can together come to an agreement on a road map that aims at ending the current humanitarian disaster in gaza. And to revive a path to peace through several fronts, starting with a guarantee of a safe, complete, fast and continuous flow of humanitarian assistance to gaza that is immediately followed by negotiations for a ceasefire and quick negotiations leading to a two State Solution and to the foundation of an independent palestinian state. The uks foreign secretary James Cleverly is also there. He condemed the actions of hamas but said hes spoken to the Israeli Government about its duty to act in accordance with International Law. I am sure we all share the revulsion at hamas murderous acts of terrorism the targeting of the civilians, the murdering of children, the desecration of dead bodies. I am sure we are all distressed by the plight of Palestinian Civilians in gaza whose lives have been made harder, more painful, and more dangerous because of the brutal attacks by hamas on 7th october. We all mourn the dead, both israeli and palestinian. James cleverley there. Live now to paul adams injerusalem. Thank you forjoining us. There is lots to get through today but lets start with the reopening or the opening of the Rafah Crossing. Some 20 trucks today, is that the start of more that will be allowed to go through . Of more that will be allowed to go throu. H . Of more that will be allowed to go throu~h . , of more that will be allowed to go throuh . ,. , of more that will be allowed to go throuuh . ,. , through . That is certainly the hope. This was always through . That is certainly the hope. This was always a through . That is certainly the hope. This was always a kind through . That is certainly the hope. This was always a kind of this was always a kind of experiment, to see whether the mechanisms that have been devised between israel and egypt and with the international agencies, whether those mechanisms really stand the test. There are a number of tests. 0bviously, test. There are a number of tests. Obviously, the need to get adequate humanitarian supplies to the palestinian population. The need to address israels concerns that this aid does not fall into the hands of hamas. Egypts concerns that nothing is going to happen in gaza is going to lead to a flood of Palestinian Refugees out over through that Rafah Crossing and into egypt. Many, many anxieties, many concerns. Butjust in terms of todays shipment, 20 trucks, just 20 trucks, the two weeks the gaza strip has been under an unbelievably strict siege. No water, food orfuel, and the situation with half the population on the move has become increasingly desperate. The idea that 20 trucks is going to make any difference to anyones lives really in the short term is kind of for the birds. What all the agencies are saying is this has to be sustained. It has to be the start of a process that goes on day after day after day and involve not just 20 trucks day after day after day and involve notjust 20 trucks but dozens, maybe scores of trucks every day. If those needs are to be met. Water, which is incredibly, in incredibly short supply following israels decision to switch off the tap at the beginning of all this, to carry water in on a truck, well, that is a hugely. Volume consuming exercise. So just taking that in involves several tracks. So there are all sorts of additional requirement that the aid agencies have therefore they are remotely satisfied that this is going to make a difference to hundreds of thousands of palestinians who have been displaced. fix, palestinians who have been displaced palestinians who have been dislaced. ,. ,. ,. Displaced. A lot of diplomatic ener displaced. A lot of diplomatic energy focused displaced. A lot of diplomatic energy focused on displaced. What has the reaction beam from the Israeli Government and does this change the timing of unexpected Ground Incursion . Ground incursion . Obviously there was a real up Ground Incursion . Obviously there was a real up swelling Ground Incursion . Obviously there was a real up swelling of Ground Incursion . Obviously there was a real up swelling of joy Ground Incursion . Obviously there was a real up swelling ofjoy and l was a real up swelling ofjoy and relief at the news of those two women being released late last night. It was the first bit of good news anyone has had for two weeks in the midst of this awful, grim, complex story. But, does it change the calculations of the Israeli Military and government, as they ponder whether or not and when to launch an invasion of the gaza strip . Well, possibly. We are not privy to those, to that thinking, not surprisingly. 0bviously privy to those, to that thinking, not surprisingly. Obviously there is a very pressing need expressed on the streets of this country by the relatives of hostages to get those people out before the fighting intensifies. That is also echoed by foreign governments, including the united states. Joe biden has had more than once that it is his highest priority as us president to secure the release of us citizens. So there is enormous pressure to see more of their scent when the qataris were welcoming the release last night, their statement indicated they hope to the dialogue that had been established already might result in further releases. We havent seen any sign of that so far. And all the while, you sense that israel will soon be launching a ground invasion, whether it is a massive, immediate invasion or whether it is a series of rolling incursions, all of those things remain to be seen. But i think the military planners here feel their window to act may be closing and they may want to act sooner rather than later. ~. ,. , than later. Pauladams, for the moment. Than later. As we have been discussing here on bbc news, 20 trucks have been sent around that number anyway, across the Rafah Crossing from egypt into gaza. But there are fears an increasing number of people are contracting Waterborne Diseases because of the lack of clean drinking water. To discuss more about the situation on the ground we can speak to a spokesperson for 0xfam who joins us from ramallah in the west bank. Bushra khalidi. Thank you forjoining us. Tell us what your teams are telling you on the ground at the moment . {jut what your teams are telling you on the ground at the moment . Our teams on the ground the ground at the moment . Our teams on the ground at the moment are on the ground at the moment are still trying to live to the next day or minute. The situation of our colleagues, every single one of the 33 colleagues we have in gaza have been displaced. Many of which have lost their homes and some of which are living with their families in extremely crowded shelters that are completely and sanitary and not equipped to shelter this amount of people. There isi Million People that were displaced to khan younis. It had almost 500,000 people. You can imagine the pressure on the south to try to deal with this influx of people. The Health Care System is hanging by a thread. If it hasnt collapsed already. Hospitals cannot function without electricity or fuel and the aid that has been received is a drop in the ocean, really, of what is needed and what gaza needs actually before the start of the hostilities, it is good to contextualise and remind people that gaza was under a legal blockade already and was already receiving over 100 trucks a day, between 60 to 70,000 people are dependent on aid already fostered you can imagine how the situation is compounded in this situation before our eyes. I just situation before our eyes. I ust want to pick situation before our eyes. I ust want to pick pi situation before our eyes. I ust want to pick up and i situation before our eyes. I ust want to pick up and ask i situation before our eyes. Ijust want to pick up and ask you situation before our eyes. Ijust want to pick up and ask you a i situation before our eyes. Ijust want to pick up and ask you a more specific question, which is about the hospitals. We know that fuel isnt being carried across the border but we know that many hospitals are running on generators and therefore are running out. What are you hearing about the situation in hospitals, in terms of getting power to be able to function . It is notjust hospitals that are running on generators. Almost half of gaza runs on generators. Without the all entering gaza, not only can hospitals not operate and will still be hanging by a thread and collapsing, but also water pumping stations, waste Water Treatment plants, all of these run on fuel. This means that for the last week, raw sewage has been pouring into the sea. Basically polluting, meaning any water pumped is polluted sewage water and cannot be drunk for people that right now are in dire need of water. There are hospitals without. How can essential operations at hospitals run without fuel . This is our concern, is how can fuel not be part of this agreement to enter into gaza . Again, half of gaza runs on generators. So, i mean, 20 trucks is only, we need five times more a day, at least to cover the most basic of needs. What About Shelter . About shelter . Bushra khalidi from oxfam, About Shelter . Plenty more on that story on the bbc news website. We have a live page there as well. Now, lets step away from the news briefly and take away from the news briefly and take a look at the spot. Thank you. We start at the Cricket World Cup where england, the defending champions, are in trouble again. Having already lost twice, theyve now been set a huge total to beat south africa in mumbai. Heinrich klaasen has been south africas hero so far after some brutal hitting, a phenomenal 109 from just 67 balls, that got his side to 399 7. Jansen reached 50 off 35 balls. So chasing 400 to win england are 18 1. In the third over. Meanwhile the netherlands, who shocked south africa for their first win on tuesday, have been beaten by sri lanka whod lost their first three matches. Chasing 262 to win, the lankans got to their target with nearly a couple of overs to spare, Sadeera Samarawickrama top scoring with 91 as they won by five wickets. Back from the international break, there are nine games in the English Premier League on saturday with the Merseyside Derby approaching full time at anfield. Everton found themselves reduced to ten men in the first half. Ashley young was sent off for a second yellow card. Liverpool struggling for most of the match until Michael Keane handled the ball in the box. That meant penalty. Mohamed salah stepping up with a quarter of an hour to go and scoring. So liverpool are 1 0 up, they are into nine minutes of stoppage time, injury time, at anfield at the moment. At the moment they are a goal to the good. Plenty of matches to come. You can see the champions, manchester city, Will Play Brighton later. That match kicks off at 3. 00 uk time to stop later, the london derby, chelsea against the joint leaders arsenal. Although liverpool are top at the moment. Sheffield united against Manchester United is the late game. And with the rugby world cup, where england and defending champions south africa meet in their semi final later. England are the underdogs but the players and fans remain optimistic of gaining some revenge for their defeat in the finalfour years ago. From paris, andy swiss reports. The first england fans arrived in paris, hoping it will be worth the journey. They know their team are the underdogs against south africa and while there is optimism, it is of the cautious kind. Im getting more deluded. The closer we get to saturday night they gave us no chance last week. I have been reading the news and i can we will win. Its the fifth time the all blacks have contested a world cup final. This was the dream of mine, to be in the dance, to make the final and give ourselves an opportunity. But the work only really starts now and its about watching tomorrow, getting our bodies right and we have a chance to win the world cup and that is what you dream of as a rugby player. You can keep across a busy day of sport on the bbc sport website. More for you later but for now, back to you. Thank you. Three risk to life Flood Warnings have been issued in derbyshire, as storm babet continues to cause disruption in parts of the uk. Some Train Operators around the uk have advised customers not to travel today. Lner, Avanti West Coast and Northern Rail say lines are widely flooded, while scotrail says some of its services are cancelled until at least tomorrow morning. A Red Weather Warning is in place until 6pm this evening in angus in scotland one of the worst affected areas. Three people are known to have died as a result of the storm. Ben phillip reports. From above, the extent of flooding to this region is made clear. The town of brechin in angus has been at the epicentre of this storm. These were the scenes yesterday morning, as dozens of people had to be rescued from their homes. You dont need to look far to see the aftermath of the flooding here in brechin. Debris has washed up onto the road. The clean up operation is now under way. The Flood Defences appear to have held last night, but with more rain on the way, locals are concerned. It looks worse today. Itsjust mud. Locals like george wilson. He was evacuated on wednesday before floodwater swamped his home. I am devastated for myself but youve got to think of other folk as well, out in the country, and. Its scary. Its scary in the dark. Thats the worst thing. We left at about 11 oclock, i think. I was able to go to my daughters. We had to go the next morning, my Mother In Law was suffering. She woke up in her bed in the morning and she was lying in water, more or less. Rain overnight and into this morning was relentless. There has been widespread Travel Disruption as well. The a90, between dundee and stonehaven, remains closed. And Rail Services in the east of the country are severely impacted. The water levels there are still high and we are still in the middle of the heavy rain. It is going to take some time for these water levels to drop. It is only when these water levels drop that we are going to be able to go in and look at the structures, and if there is any damage to the hammering that the structures have taken over the last few days. Dozens of flood alerts and warnings remain in place. As locals are left counting the cost of the damage, a red warning is still in force, with more rain and wind expected in the coming hours. Ben philip, bbc news, brechin. That is it for this part of the programme. We will be back after a short break, stay with us here on bbc news. Hello. Its still raining heavily and persistently across parts of the uk. So lets start with the Important Message and that red warning from the met office is still in force for parts of eastern scotland. It means danger to life. Its valid until 6 00 pm this evening, as is this much wider Amber Warning in eastern scotland. 100 millimetres of rain, further 100 millimetres of rain possible. In the north of scotland, this Amber Warning is valid until 10pm today and you can see that rainfall here, heavy and persistent. And this has been the trouble over the last few days. Its this wind, this southeasterly Gale Force Wind thats been stuck across this part of the world. It keeps pushing in those rain clouds and dumping all of that rain in the same spot. To the south of that, its brighter, some sunny spells, but we have showers in the forecast for parts of east anglia and the south east where it will remain cloudy, damp, with heavy showers at times. So through the course of the evening and overnight, finally, that persistent rain clears to the north of scotland. The skies are clear. The winds will ease as well and the temperatures will drop. So were talking about a pretty chilly morning, quite a chilly start to sunday, three degrees in aberdeen, two in newcastle, around 5 to 9 degrees across the bulk of england and wales as well as northern ireland. So heres the weather map for sunday. That troublesome low with its persistent rain has finally shifted to the north. Itll be just to the north of scotland. Were actually in between Weather Systems on sunday. So a good deal of dry, bright weather. Im very pleased to report. In fact, the best of the weather will probably be around some of these eastern coasts. The wind will have changed direction as well, coming more out of the west, southwest. Temperatures around 12 degrees in the Lowlands Of Scotland will match that in belfast, liverpool, about 14 and around 15 or so in the southeast. And then into monday, were expecting another very rainy area of low pressure to sweep in from the south. Itll be with us into tuesday as well. And actually, there are many low pressures out in the atlantic ready to come our way. So, yes, a bit ofa break, ithink, tomorrow with some sunny spells. But overall, the Weather Pattern is looking distinctly wet and windy in the coming days. Bye bye. This is bbc news, the headlines. The first trucks since the israel hamas war began start crossing from egypt into gaza carrying desperately needed aid. The un chief again pushes for a humanitarian ceasefire at a hastily convened summit in cairo on the gaza crisis. In London Met Police says up to 100,000 people have taken to the streets voicing support for palestinians. And storm babet continues to sweep across the uk, with three risk to life Flood Warnings, and widespread Travel Disruption. Those are some of the other stories we have been looking at on the bbc news channel. Now on bbc news. Israel gaza why is there a war . Israel is calling this its 9 11. A massive co ordinated and deadly raid by hamas into southern israel. This event is the biggest catastrophe of the state of israel ever. Praying. It was unbelievable the casualties that we saw
