the first 20 trucks through. all sides have imposed conditions. israel has sealed its borders with gaza. the rafah crossing between egypt and gaza is the only way right now to allow vital supplies in. one big question is whether foreign passport holders and dual nationals — at least 600 of whom are american according to the us state department — may be allowed out tamara alrifai from unrwa gave us this update from her team on the ground in gaza. very tragic, i7 very tragic, 17 of my colleagues were killed in the last two weeks. i would like to remind that we have 13,000 staff in gaza, most of them, almost all of them, minus a few or people from gaza. they for the most sheltering in designated schools and shelters and for they are, they are doing all they can so for instance we have mobile medical teams doing the rounds in about 90 shelters in the rounds in about 90 shelters in the middle and south regions of gaza. also help us continue to arrive to the shelter thanks to co—operation from the world food programme but as gaza is running out of clean water, people have been drinking water that is not fit for human consumption and thus also causes a huge risk for our ability and the who feasibility and the visibility of the big race to continue making but if there is no clean water and our call is very clear. clean water must go into gaza, you must go into gaza to be able to nourish the water desalination plants so we and civilians have access to clean drinking water. basic medical supplies. we are talking about paracetamol, antibiotics, insulin have to go in. this is why when we speak about the convoy getting ready to go into gaza our call is that this should not be a one off, as welcome as it does. it should be a continuous unimpeded unsafe access of eight convoys and personnel into the entire strip, north, middle and south, notjust the south. that was a representative of the key aid agency on the ground, talking about the need for aid and as we said in the last hour, the border crossing between egypt and the gaza strip has opened to allow the first tracks of much—needed aid allowed in. the practicalities of which will hopefully find out as we go along. there's been a tweet in the last few moments from the uk foreign secretary james cleverley who has been moving around the region in recent days and he says on the subject of the trucks going into the gaza strip, this aid is a lifeline for those suffering but i cannot be a one off. the uk continues to push for humanitarian access to gaza and we will bring you up—to—date of course this morning with all of the aid trucks going on. another big story of course... two american hostages, who were among around 200 people captured by hamas during the group's attack on israel two weeks ago, have been freed. 1400 moo people were massacred during the attack. judith and natalie ranaan were released after negotiations with hamas, which is regarded as a terrorist organisation by many governments including the uk and us — in a deal brokered by qatar. 0ur correspondent david willis reports. grainy images captured by hamas show the moment thatjudith ranaan and her 17—year—old daughter natalie were handed over to the international red cross at the border with gaza after nearly two weeks in captivity. whisked to a us military base in israel, they spoke by phone with president biden, who said he was overjoyed by their release. whilst back home in illinois, the sense of relief was palpable. i've been waiting for this moment for a long time. for two weeks. i haven't been sleeping for two weeks. tonight i'm going to sleep good. i spoke with my daughter earlier today. she sounds very good. she looks very good. she was very happy. and she's waiting to come home. the international red cross said the women's release provided what it called a "sliver of hope" to relatives of the roughly 200 others abducted by hamas. meanwhile, in gaza, conditions remain dire. a convoy of trucks loaded with desperately needed supplies of food, water and other humanitarian aid remains stuck on the egyptian side of the border as negotiations with israel drag on. what is needed is a continuous flow of aid. this is not about a one—off, sending 20 trucks and then nothing. this is really a call for a continuous and safe humanitarian access with security conditions that allow my colleagues in gaza to do what they need to do. large numbers of israeli troops are now stationed near gaza ahead of a potential ground offensive there, which israel says is aimed at rooting out hamas. negotiations led by the arab state of qatar paved the way forjudith and natalie ranaan*s release, raising the hope that further deals with hamas might be possible. next week sees natalie*s 18th birthday, and herfather is hoping she'll be able to celebrate at home. i'm going to hug her and kiss her, and it's going to be the best day of my life. david willis, bbc news, washington. going back to the breaking news this hour that the crossing between egypt and the gaza strip known as the rafah crossing, the first aid trucks, there have been dozens massing on the egyptian side of the border, the first tracks are being allowed in. joining us now on the line is our reporter at the rafah crossing, rushdie abualouf what can you see right there? we can see pictures of the crossing but on your side of the border what does it look like? hello? can you hear me? i think we seem to have a technical problem at the moment. but hopefully we can join our correspondent on the gaza side of the border as soon as we can. in northern israel at the border with lebanon there has been increasing tension throughout the week. regular exchanges of gunfire with the militant group hezbollah. like hamas it is designated a terror organisation by many governments including the uk and the us, backed by iran. the israeli military has evacuated many people from the vicinity and on the lebanese side of the border people have been leaving their homes. israel has been evacuating a large community forced to move out of the border region. concerns are growing about the increasing likelihood of conflict. anna foster reports from northern israel. a threat so close, you can see it. this hezbollah observation post is metres from an israeli town. and that's why even more of this border is now emptying out. today, kiryat shemona, a community of 20,000. but leaving isn't easy. in the shelter, this lady waits with a husband and three children. she has cancer, but since the war began all her medical appointments have been cancelled. translation: they're evacuating today and i asked them to take i the sick people first. i know they evacuated others, but no one has reached out to me. the feeling is very scary, that's why i want them to evacuate my family as soon as possible. even underground, this lady doesn't feel her twins are safe. she says the law bans locking the door of these public shelters and she fears another massacre, like the one in the south. this is israel's defence. thousands of soldiers digging in as the people move out. this is what's been happening all the way along the border. fields turned into forward operating bases, artillery shells are being prepared, armoured vehicles are being readied. israel has been doing as much as it can to strengthen and fortify this border. these reserve forces know that everything is different now. not my first war and i have never have seen such massive amounts of units all across israel. trained on scales we have never seen before. at least not in my lifetime. these are some of israel's darkest moments. and here they hope there aren't even harder days to come. anna foster, bbc news, on the israel—lebanon border. live now tojerusalem to speak to our middle east correspondent tom bateman. so much we need to keep on top of today. we were talking about the increasing tensions and exchanges of fire in the israeli northern border with armed groups in southern lebanon, we've been talking about hostages released, two of them, but 200 in the gaza strip remaining, and the first aid trucks crossing into the first aid trucks crossing into the gaza strip and we have heard aid agencies and the un saying the supplies must get in and they have to get in on a sustained and continued right? to get in on a sustained and continued riuht? ~ , ,., , . ~ continued right? absolutely, taking a step back. _ continued right? absolutely, taking a step back, fights _ continued right? absolutely, taking a step back, fights critically - a step back, fights critically important as people are running out of water so we have heard the un talk about people drinking dirty water from agricultural wells. they really worry about the spread of infectious disease, people come off and the tops are turned on sometimes they are filled with seawater and people are drinking so it is absolutely critical this stuff gets in. the americans gave an alert to a us passport holders in gaza, palestinians with us citizenship that they expected the crossing to open at 10am this morning so that wasjust over an hour ago open at 10am this morning so that was just over an hour ago local time. they were telling them to expect potentially chaotic and disorderly scenes at the border, at the best of times it's messy bureaucratic and challenging process for people to try to exit three rafah and in a situation it will be many factors more challenging and demanding and we have seen the aid coming in, starting to come in. i know we are having problems reaching our correspondent in gaza this morning, it's so difficult, our correspondent there told me he had seen a0 palestinian lorries on the palestinian side, what they are going to do presumably is transfer codes into the palestinian trucks, it may be that as for the un carries out inspections, that is something the israelis are demanding... because the israelis are worried there could be on some materials that hamas could use in its attacks against israel?— against israel? first of all they will not let _ against israel? first of all they will not let you _ against israel? first of all they will not let you go, _ against israel? first of all they will not let you go, that's - against israel? first of all they will not let you go, that's not i against israel? first of all they i will not let you go, that's not part of the agreement because they think hamas could exploit and steal the fuel. earlier in the process they had said they want inspections to take place but we do not know if that has been a great, a lot of these details are not made public but the un certainly is present so they may want to carry out those inspections. —— and this is going to take time. but he said, it is important this gets in, the aid agency saying it is not enough and it needs to be continuous. so much continent it needs to be continuous. so much contingent here, _ it needs to be continuous. so much contingent here, the _ it needs to be continuous. so much contingent here, the un _ it needs to be continuous. so much contingent here, the un saying - it needs to be continuous. so much contingent here, the un saying it i contingent here, the un saying it has to be continued, we must remind people in gaza even before this elevation of violence, 80% of people living there were already relying on un aid. that is according to the united nations. 50% of the population under the age of 18 and the humanitarian suffering has been increasing dramatically in the last couple of weeks. but the practicalities as well, roads broken so yesterday we heard about bulldozers trying to repair roads so aid lorries can get to civilians? for context, before the current crisis there were around 285 lorries of aid supplies going on every month so what is now crossing today, getting every couple of days in normal times anyway, that was before this current outbreak and crisis so that just gives you this current outbreak and crisis so thatjust gives you a sense of how thatjust gives you a sense of how thatis thatjust gives you a sense of how that is not enough and it supplies, commercial crossing, other routes from israel, for other supplies as well. we are seeing the siege around gaza creating a humanitarian disaster, basically. the blockade has always been there, since a mass came into power, voted on in 2006, the kicked out fatah and israel and egypt imposed the blockade because they were trying to keep israel secure so the politics around this had been going on for a long trucks are moving. slowly into the gaza strip and we have seen how complicated the processes and our correspondent brought up the focus of aid workers, some of whom have lost their lives over the last two weeks. their safety should be guaranteed from israeli airstrikes but also from hamas. israel says allowing these trucks and is contingent that hamas does not divert any supplies, we know hamas is armed so how do you even go about trying to prevent this? it even go about trying to prevent this? , ., ,* even go about trying to prevent this? it shows you've the massive challenges _ this? it challenges with the entire situation because what israel has said, this is a fundamental shift from the relationship you had the last 16 years between hamas and the israeli government because the two have never spoken, they do not speak directly, there has been no direct negotiations but they have coordinated and have had discussions, mediated usually by qatar, about technical elements, letting money and for palestinians. this is fundamentally ruptured by the atrocities carried out by hamas. now you are seeing the intense bombardment by the israelis because the position is hamas can no longer exist but the fact is, the governing force inside the gaza strip so how do you square those? a big question for what happens after this conflict. but it's a question already as we have heard from our correspondent, how you manage the supply of aid when hamas is the governing force and we have seen us challenge and volvo see them over the coming days. the united nations is heavily involved but once this has left the hands of the egyptians it goes into the gaza strip, it is difficult and it is a precursor to what is going to become a growing issue over the coming weeks and months. one other point. the un has said increasingly, they talk about moderated language, frustration, tension is amongst the many displaced people packed into school buildings, public places, desperately disruption up and down the country but especially across the country but especially across the midlands, wales, northern england and scotland. many of the warnings have been dropped for england and wales but we have a renewed red warning for parts of eastern scotland, for they heavy and persistent rain which could exacerbate flooding. the air of most concern is the amber area, stretching from aberdeen and pressure. the area of most concern is this amber area that stretches from aberdeenshire down towards perthshire and within it, the red warning, parts of angus and south—east aberdeenshire. we also have an amber warning for the north highlands. the rain relentless through the afternoon here. strong gale force winds battering north sea coasts. further south, much of south of scotland into northern and england and wales' conditions will be improving, sunshine will develop across western areas and slowly push eastwards. but we'll see a line of showers moving in to strong, fairly gusty winds through the channel there and into the south—east. very strong winds across the north of the uk and it will be quite chilly as well. temperatures in single digits in the far north of scotland. up to around 15 or 16 in the south—east. as we move through tonight, though, the showers clear away from the south—east of england and finally the rain pulls away from the north and east of scotland. so conditions turning drier here, clearskies, lighter winds and clear spells. so it will turn quite chilly, temperatures in single digits for most. with lighter winds, we could see a bit of mist and fog too. part two of the weekend, we're in between weather systems. a much quieter, much more settled day to come. we'll see storm babet, the low pressure system, move northwards, away from the north of scotland. so a vastly, much better day across the north and east of scotland, with some sunshine. plenty of sunshine for northern ireland, england and wales. just the chance of a few showers developing out west through the afternoon. most places will stay dry. winds will be lighter but after that chilly start, it will be a slightly cooler day. temperatures of 10—15 degrees. it doesn't last, though. as we head into next week, we'll see further low pressure systems hurtling in off the atlantic to bring us further spells wet weather but the difference is, with these low—pressure systems, they should move through faster, so unlike storm babet that remain almost in situ, bringing relentless rain. so an unsettled outlook for much of next week, with low pressure nearby, but there will be some sunshine at times as well. see you later. this is bbc news. the headlines: these are live pictures of aid trucks entering gaza after a partial opening of the rafah crossing with egypt. the us embassy in israel earlier said the border opening will enable foreign citizens stuck in gaza to leave. the un secretary general antonio gueterres is among the guests at what's being called a gaza peace summit in cairo today. also attending are the palestinian authority and jordan but israel and iran will not be present. relatives of the two hostages released by hamas have expressed joy and relief. judith and her daughter natalie raanan are the first to be freed after this month's deadly attack on israel. there are about 200 remaining hostages. taken from the south of israel into gaza. storm babet continues to sweep across the uk, with eastern scotland enforcing its second red weather warning this week. at least three people have died since the storm took hold on thursday. we stay with our breaking news now. the rafah crossing has just opened between egypt and gaza. the footage shows the first trucks loaded with food, water and medicines, desperately needed by civilians inside gaza, crossing over. it's unclear how long it will remain open. it isa it is a fragile situation. israel has agreed to let a first convoy of 20 trucks through. israel has sealed its borders with gaza. since the massacre on its soil two weeks ago. the rafah crossing between egypt and gaza is the only way right now to allow vital supplies in. another big question is whether foreign passport holders and dual nationals, at least 600 of whom are american according to the us state department, may be allowed out. joining me now from istanbul is jane kinninmont. she's the director of policy and impact at the european leadership network which is an independent group working to provide practical solutions to political and security challenges. jane kinninmont, thank you very much for talking to us. you are also a middle east expert delete expert and therefore well versed in how complex this situation is. it must seem obvious, there are civilians suffering in gaza, aid must go in but negotiations to get even these very best tracks have taken a very long time and many, many players getting involved in trying to negotiate this.— getting involved in trying to negotiate this. that is right. civilians are _ negotiate this. that is right. civilians are being _ negotiate this. that is right. civilians are being used - negotiate this. that is right. civilians are being used as i negotiate this. that is right. civilians are being used as aj civilians are being used as a bargaining chip all around because there is not a functioning political or diplomatic process. there is may a glimmer of hope from having a small amount of aid and also two hostages released. but obviously thatis hostages released. but obviously that is in the context of 2.2 million people in gaza who need water and food and an estimated 200 israeli hostages who are being held in gaza. so we are just seeing these very small gestures that are being used maybe to test whether some further diplomatic progress could be possible. but that could be outpaced by the effects of the violence. that is right because the un has said its aid workers need to be protected, they need to know that they are safe in order to hand out supplies. civilians need to know that the areas where they are to receive supplies are not going to be bombed. israel says it has the right to protect itself, let's not forget two weeks ago, that was a massacre inside israel. 1a00 people killed, massacred, more than 200 hostages then taken into the gaza strip, as you say they are, jane. at the same time, even israel's closest allies like the us had said remember the rules of law and engagement. civilians need to be looked after. then we have to remember that hamas is notjust then we have to remember that hamas is not just a then we have to remember that hamas is notjust a group that went in to carry out that attack, unprecedented attack in israel, it is also the governor of the gaza strip. so how do you keep hamas away from these supplies if they tried to divert them israel says no more supplies will be allowed in. that them israel says no more supplies will be allowed in.— will be allowed in. that is going to be certainly _ will be allowed in. that is going to be certainly a _ will be allowed in. that is going to be certainly a difficult _ will be allowed in. that is going to be certainly a difficult practical - be certainly a difficult practical challenge and quite hard to verify on the ground, especially with a lot of communications into gaza are being cut off. they certainly are many in the israeli government who don't think that any aid should go in at all and this has happened under significant international pressure. israel does face an extremely difficult political conundrum here because it wants to punish, retaliate, deterand perhaps destroy hamas and most countries accept that it has the right to defend itself after the assault that was carried out inside israeli territory. at the same time, there is a much broader palestinian population and strategically, it is also bad for israel if the entire population of gaza sees israel as an enemy and thinks that there is no chance for peace. this is really the problem, is how do we look at a longer term political solution? what is the alternative to hamas? who can lead in the palestinian territories? is there a chance of strengthening the palestinian authority? it's viewed by many palestinians as having lost its legitimacy. the last election it had was in 2006. the leadership is ageing but is there a way to keep alive some hopes that some leadership can believe in a future political process? right now, unfortunately, palestinian civilians think they are all are being collectively targeted and it is very difficult for anyone to raise their voice right now for a peaceful settlement orfor voice right now for a peaceful settlement or for coexistence. the palestinian — settlement or for coexistence. the palestinian health authority says that now more than a000 gazans have died in israel's aerial bombardment and strikes that it launched two weeks ago after that huge attack on its territory. you are a middle east expert and an expert in diplomacy to stop you talk about the prospect of peace and actually, we have been hearing increasing voices in the region, in the middle east but also from the us, the uk and other international players saying the world has to be able to see with fears that the violence and tensions here could spread now to the further middle east as a result. that the world can no longer afford not to have another go at trying to broker a peaceful solution here. but at this moment, that seems so very far off, jane? . , this moment, that seems so very far off, jane? ., , , .., , off, jane? that is right, because the international _ off, jane? that is right, because the international community - off, jane? that is right, becausej the international community and off, jane? that is right, because - the international community and most of the arab states are wedded to the idea of the two state solution, which the israelis and palestinians agreed on 30 years ago. but most palestinians today are under 30. people on both sides have lost faith in the two state solution. it doesn't mean that they don't necessarily want it or that it is impossible but most people believe that it impossible but most people believe thatitis impossible but most people believe that it is not possible and they tend to blame the other side. so can the international community reawaken the international community reawa ken this the international community reawaken this idea in any credible way? or do they need to look at some alternative solutions? they really needs to be space for long—term thinking and for strategising and it is very overdue. 0f thinking and for strategising and it is very overdue. of course, this is what happens, crises blow up and people wish they had paid more attention at an earlier stage. but it is really, really important that the regional leaders are meeting. it is important that some of those arab countries will be talking also to iran. there needs to be a political solution here. it is something egypt will be saying, because they have mediated a number of ceasefires before, albeit with less extreme violence. they will be saying, we can't keep doing this. we need to change the game altogether. jane kinninmont. _ change the game altogether. jane kinninmont, from _ change the game altogether. jane kinninmont, from the european leadership network, thank you very much for talking to us about the short—term conundrum on the ground, about how to get aid into the gaza strip, those first tracks as we were seeing, as he was speaking, entering the gaza strip. also the long—term challenges for how to try and get peace to this troubled region. on those aid trucks, we have just received a statement from the united nations. the united nations has taken on the responsibility of trying to practically hand out the aid that is arriving inside the gaza strip. they say the 20 truck convoy thatis strip. they say the 20 truck convoy that is hoped to go in today includes life—saving supplies provided by the egyptian red crescent and the united nations and which are approved to cross and be received by the palestinian red crescent. we heard from our reporter about the palestinian trucks waiting on the gaza side of the crossing. that, says the un, with the support of the united nations and its workers inside gaza. the un says confident this delivery will be the start of a sustainable effort to provide essential supplies, including food, water, medicine and it says fuel as well, which for now is something that israel has said it is something that israel has said it is not keen to have. it says it is worried fuel supplies could be diverted by hamas. the un says that fuel is needed for the people of gaza and again in this statement, in a safe, dependable, unconditional and unimpeded manner, it says there. at the same time as these aid trucks are beginning to arrive into gaza, there is also a named guard their peace summit to a —— taking place in egypt. arab nations there as well as international representation from the european union and some european countries as well. we can cross to our bbc arabic reporter who is at the peace conference. abdel—bassir hassan. nobody disputes that should be a peace conference at the question we have to ask right away when we look at people attending, israel isn't there, iran is not there, the united states is not there, so what could be achieved in concrete terms today? at least as observer said, something political collectively should be done. this is the first collective political movement or measure to be taken since the onset of the crisis in gaza and israel 15 years ago. for the first time, some world leaders and heads of states and prime ministers meet in cairo, to discuss together what is going on. they might reach some certain points. expectedly today, there will be no call for opening the rafah border because it is open today. but there could be recommendations thatjust not be limited to a limited number of trucks but they may ask for wider or more trucks, more loads of supplies to come into gaza. for sure, they are going to ask about this. of course, the first priority would be a call for ending the current war and to reach a ceasefire as soon as they can. find current war and to reach a ceasefire as soon as they can.— as soon as they can. and also, we have been — as soon as they can. and also, we have been hearing _ as soon as they can. and also, we have been hearing concern - as soon as they can. and also, we j have been hearing concern around as soon as they can. and also, we - have been hearing concern around the middle east and beyond that the hostilities between israel and hamas in gaza could spread to the wider middle east. just a few moments ago, we were talking about this exchange of fire between israel's military and armed groups in southern lebanon, over israel's southern border and a fear in israel they could be fighting a war on several fronts. that also will be a subject of conversation today? this fronts. that also will be a sub'ect their main focus of the gathering in cairo, in order to try to reach an agreement or to warn against lingering of the current conflict and try to warn against being outside its current spots in gaza or israel, or even the west bank. there are fears and concerns that it shouldn't go over and therefore, because now the leaders from the european union, the leaders from the gulf countries and the arabs and representatives from china, the united nation's secretary general is here. unfortunately, we haven't heard a senior official is present. israel is not present. therefore, another call is to warn against the conflict to spoil over. they may be coming to something which is trying to urge for a ceasefire as a priority. then for sure, they would ask for trying to avoid more escalation in order to contain the current crisis and just stop it, limit it to its current, at least geographical and territorial conflict, which is mainly israel, part of israel and gaza, and try to contain what is happening in the north of israel and with south lebanon between them and israel. thank you very much indeed for joining us. that peace conference in cairo looking at immediate conundrum is, how to stop the conflict from spreading and also whether there can be an eventual peaceful solution here, as concrete to solving tensions in the wider middle east. arab leaders will be fundamental to that. that is it from as for now from jerusalem, handing back to you, richard. thank you very much for now. here in the uk... the second red "danger to life" weather warning this week has come into force in eastern parts of scotland, with torrential rain and high winds forecast across much of britain. storm babet has already claimed at least three lives. hundreds of flood alerts are in place, and travel is expected to be badly disrupted. simonjones has this report. the wind and the rain have already been relentless, and there is still much more to come. further flooding is expected today. some areas of scotland could see another 100mm of rain, meaning lives could be in danger. please do listen to the advice that is being given by all of the local partners, by our emergency services and by the government. if you are in those worst impacted areas under the red warning, there is a potential risk to life, so do not travel. stay at home, or if you are told to evacuate, then please evacuate. brechin is under its second red alert in as many days, the local council has said it is ready to ask for military support if the situation worsens dramatically. many people remain in temporary accommodation. i don't know if we're going to get back into the house today or tomorrow or the next day. i don't know — nobody has said. john cavanagh is now staying with relatives, but fears what further damage may be caused today. it's totally unforgiving. and you see it on the television, but it's not until you're standing at the wall or at the river, and you remember what it looks like normally, and you see there's a huge volume of water. it really is quite scary, the kind of destructive potential of it. this weather warning map tells the story. the red alert for north—east scotland came in at midnight. 0ther met office warnings for wind and rain covering huge swathes of england and wales have been in place overnight, babet has already claimed at least three lives. chesterfield was one of the areas worst hit in england, leading to a major incident being declared in derbyshire, along with south yorkshire and suffolk. we know that the effects of heavy rainfall can become fully devastating. tragically, people have lost their lives. that is why we would encourage people to stay away from the water, don't drive through it, don't enter it and keep yourself safe. , ., ., ., * , properties, we need somewhere for it to go and that is what we are struggling with today, is we really need it to stop raining so then we can start bringing the water level down. but for the moment, skidded off the runway. the plane came in to land amid wet and windy conditions as storm babet swept the uk. the flight from corfu "moved off the runway whilst landing" at the airport. firefighters attended the scene but all passengers were safely taken off the plane and the airport had closed. live now to our reporter yunus mulla who is in chesterfield in derbyshire. good morning to you. as we heard in simon's report, chesterfield one of the worst affected areas in england. what is the picture this morning that people had been waking up to? after yesterday's heavy downpours as a result of storm babet, it's a result of storm babet, its continuing to rain here in chesterfield, as you can see. this road that resembled a river yesterday now looks like a road and traffic is flowing again. but what you can also see is the damage caused by the flooding here yesterday. the road surface has been damaged. you can see debris on the pavement and on the road. you can see tarmac that has come up. but you also see the clean—up operation. also, we had yesterday around 60 people who were rescued from this area. this is the brampton area of chesterfield in north—east derbyshire. they were offered the opportunity to go to a rescue centre. some chose to do that, some chose to go to friends and family, homes of friends and family. i spoke to a couple earlier this morning who had stayed with their daughter. she said that she was terrified when the river burst here and the water started coming into her property. she said she is now waiting for insurance companies to work out how much, what to do now, really, because of the damage caused. she cannot stay here, she needs to find somewhere else. around 100 people are in a similar kind of situation. i am told around a00 properties are inhabitable here and the situation isn't necessarily going to get any better, because derbyshire fire and rescue service have declared their a major incident yesterday. they say to expect more of the same. we have this yellow warning for rain and wind, doing damage or the potential issues may not be here in this chesterfield area but it's moving south. they are still warning drivers not to go out onto the roads because of the debris on the floor, because of the debris on the floor, because that could damage cars, it could cause issues. they want people to stay at home if it is not absolutely necessary for them to go out here in this kind of weather in these conditions. {lilia out here in this kind of weather in these conditions.— out here in this kind of weather in these conditions. 0k, month, which restrcited the rights of indigenous people to their ancestral lands. indigenous leaders campaigned against the proposal for years, arguing that tribes had been evicted from their lands over centuries. the proposal will now return to congress, which may override the veto. another of donald trump's fomer lawyers has taken a plea deal in georgia's 2020 election interference case in the us. kenneth chesebro was criminally charged alongside 19 others — including mr trump — for his role in what prosecutors describe as a conspiracy to overturn the 2020 presidential election. mr trump's former—lawyer, sydney powell, struck a similar deal on thursday. meanwhile, republicans have withdrawn their support from the hardline conservative, jimjordan, to be speaker of the us house of representatives. he lost a third vote on friday. it's not clear who the party will put forward as another candidate. a number of other republicans have announced their own bids for speaker. the party will reconvene on monday. recycling is set to become easier in england under new government proposals, allowing everyone — whether at home, work or school — to recycle the same materials. weekly collections of food waste will also be introduced for most households across england by 2026. 0ur environment correspondent jonah fisher explains. how much food do you throw away? gillian is making her lunch at her home in essex. she puts the leftovers out ready for the weekly food waste collection. but where does it all go? i have no idea, to be quite honest. in essex, there's a separate food waste collection, but that's not the case everywhere. gillian's leftovers end up in dagenham. it does smell a bit disgusting. it might smell to you, but to us, this is a valuable resource. this is fuel. at this anaerobic digester, the food is mashed up and water added. this is soup which we feed into the digester. soup? you actually call this soup? yes. that soup then emits a gas that's used to generate electricity. using our leftovers like this makes sense to the government. and today, it announced that it wants all of england's food waste to be processed separately by early 2026. this food waste has all been collected separately, but at the moment, only about a third of households in england do that. under the new plan, everyone will have to start separating out their food at home — bringing new responsibilities for us, and also for councils who will have to pick up that food waste once a week. all the other nations have been implementing separate food waste collections for several years, so england is really quite far behind. so what about our dry recycling? the proposal that we should force you to have seven - different bins in your home? i've scrapped it. with seven bins off the table if they were ever on it, the government has decided to keep things simple. if your council wants to, all your glass, paper and metals can be mixed together at home. there's also a list, meaning every english council will have to recycle the same things. the government is fiddling around with a system that's fundamentally broken and the public want to see action on this. the government needs to get serious about dealing with this problem, and that means backing measures that will cut the amount of plastic packaging produced in the first place. it's a bio fertiliser... back at the anaerobic digester, what's left of the food waste soup is sold as fertiliser. this is liquid gold. you may not share his enthusiasm, but at least pause for a moment before you next throw away your food. jonah fisher, bbc news in essex. now before we go a reminder of our main story this hour, the rafah crossing between egypt and gaza has reopened for a certain number of trucks. the who says tracks have included health supplies, which have included trauma and medical packs. much more on this still to come. hello there. storm babet has brought widespread disruption up and down the country, but especially across the midlands, wales, northern england and across scotland. now, many of the warnings have been dropped for england and wales today, but we have a renewed red warning for parts of eastern scotland, for further heavy and persistent rain here which could exacerbate flooding issues. the area of most concern is this amber area that stretches from aberdeenshire down towards perthshire and within it, the red warning, parts of angus and south—east aberdeenshire. we also have an amber warning for the north highlands. the rain relentless through the afternoon here. strong gale force winds battering north sea coasts. further south, much of south of scotland into northern and england and wales' conditions will be improving, sunshine will develop across western areas and slowly push eastwards. but we'll see a line of showers moving in to the south—east of england. strong, fairly gusty winds through the channel there and into the south—east. very strong winds across the north of the uk and it will be quite chilly as well. temperatures in single digits in the far north of scotland. up to around 15 or 16 in the south—east. as we move through tonight, though, the showers clear away from the south—east of england and finally the rain pulls away from the north and east of scotland. so conditions turning drier here, clearskies, lighter winds and clear spells. so it will turn quite chilly, temperatures in single digits for most. with lighter winds, we could see a bit of mist and fog too. part two of the weekend, we're in between weather systems. a much quieter, much more settled day to come. we'll see storm babet, the low pressure system, move northwards, away from the north of scotland. so a vastly, much better day across the north and east of scotland, with some sunshine. plenty of sunshine for northern ireland, england and wales. just the chance of a few showers developing out west through the afternoon. most places will stay dry. winds will be lighter but after that chilly start, it will be a slightly cooler day. temperatures of 10—15 degrees. it doesn't last, though. as we head into next week, we'll see further low pressure systems hurtling in off the atlantic to bring us further spells wet weather but the difference is, with these low—pressure systems, they should move through faster, so unlike storm babet that remain almost in situ, bringing relentless rain. so an unsettled outlook for much of next week, with low pressure nearby, but there will be some sunshine at times as well. see you later. live from jerusalem. this is bbc news. a short while ago the rafah border crossing between the gaza strip and egypt was opened. these are live pictures of trucks carrying relief items into gaza. foreign nationals may also be says he's overjoyed at the release of an american mother and daughter who were abducted along with 200 people from southern israel by hamas. storm babet continues to sweep across the uk. a second red weather warning has come into force in eastern scotland. we begin with breaking news — the first trucks have begun to cross into gaza after the rafah crossing opened this morning. these live pictures show the first trucks loaded with food, water and medicines, depsperately needed by civilians inside gaza, crossing the border. it's unclear how long it will remain open. israel has agreed to let the first 20 trucks through. israel has sealed its borders with gaza.
