and speak live to key players on today's big stories. plus, a first look what's on tomorrow's front pages. good evening. we're live injerusalem, reporting on the continuing trauma of both sides in the israel—gaza conflict. the un is warning a deal agreed yesterday to get aid into gaza, with an initial 20 lorries loaded with food, water and medicine ready to go, is inadequate. humanitarian agencies say the hope is the convoys from egypt can begin rolling tomorrow, but over 2 million people need help, as israel continues its bombing campaign, targeting members of hamas responsible for the murders of around 1,400 israelis 12 days ago. hamas is a group designated as a terrorist organisation by the uk government. meanwhile, israel is learning every day more horrific details of the atrocities hamas committed, revising the number of hostages taken to 203. we'll have more on the dire situation in gaza. we'll report on rishi sunak*s visit here to show solidarity with israel, describing hamas as representing "pure evil." but first, lucy williamson has been to the kibbutz of mir oz, where one family is still waiting for answers to what happened to their loved ones when hamas attacked. her report, and the others we have tonight, do contain distressing details. nir oz, three miles from gaza's border, is now a place of silence... explosion. ..and noise. they're still finding bodies in the communities and fields near here. this woman, pulled out yesterday, naked and bound with metal wire. recovery teams say more than 20 children were found nearby, tied together and burned. deaths like this enough to break the living. hamas gunmen attacked early in nir oz, with drills to loot... ..and guns to kill. survivors say one in four people are dead or missing. among them, a british man and his stepfather. danny darlington was born and bred in manchester. a neighbour identified his body, but there's still no confirmation that he's dead. his mother's first husband, haim peri, lived on the kibbutz. he used to cross regularly into gaza to drive sick children to israeli hospitals. he's just been formally listed as a hostage. haim and his wife, osnat, were hiding in this safe room this door held out against the first group of the militants, but they came back a second time. by that time, osnat was hiding behind this couch and haim decided the door would not hold and he should offer himself up. his wife was still hiding when a second group burst in, less disciplined, more destructive. the door to the safe room was open. it was dark inside, they did not bother to look. danny wasn't meant to be in the kibbutz that morning. he stayed on an extra night and sent a text to his half—brother as the attack unfolded. that's the last i heard of him, and now i'm trying to help the family because the family are still in manchester and they are really in the dark. the family, in limbo, feels out of sync with israel's national mood. revenge is a very strong emotion which a lot of people have now, but now let's not talk about revenge because we lost the first act, ok? so let's. .. before winning the war, let's gather the remains and do whatever we can to get out of this hostage situation. israel is eyeing the next stage in this conflict — a major offensive in gaza aimed at destroying hamas — while the families of those still missing here stay frozen in the hours after the attack. lucy williamson, bbc news, nir oz. fresh details israel's nightmare. for the 2.2 million residents of gaza, the wait for humanitarian aid is truly desperate. israel cut electricity, most water supplies, and stopped deliveries of food and medicine following the hamas attack on october the 7th. it's thought a small amount of aid will start to travel through the rafah crossing from eygpt into the territory tomorrow. asjon donnison reports, conditions there are dire. this morning, a funeralfor fatima. she never knew life. "stillborn," he says, after her mother was killed along with two of her other daughters, aged 10 and 14. "they were sleeping peacefully," a relative tells us, "when israel bombed a neighbour's house in rafah," he says, "after the family had fled from the north." the un says there are 50,000 pregnant women in gaza, with more than 5,000 due to give birth over the next month. medicines are in short supply, and people are being asked to donate blood, with the border still closed to foreign aid. volunteers are cooking on wood fires. fuel is scarce. there's food, but it's running out. "most getjust one meal a day or sometimes every two days," mahmoud tells us. in the neighbouring town of khan yunis, many who've fled their homes are now in makeshift camps. hoda arafat says her daughter, "the flower of their household," died when their home collapsed on top of them. "we're living in tents, humiliated. we don't have water nor food or anything at all. we fled with the clothes on our backs," she says. "i never dreamed i would leave my house in gaza city," says kamil. "i built it with rooms for all my kids and now i'm in a place like this." the united nations says more than a million gazans have been displaced, with hundreds of thousands moving to the south. and in the north, you can see why. jon donnison, bbc news. the very latest we have on gaza's nightmare. well, rishi sunak is on a two—day visit to the middle east, holding talks to try to prevent any wider escalation of the israel—gaza conflict. this evening he's been in saudi arabia, while earlier today he was here injerusalem for talks with benjamin netanyahu. he said the uk firmly believed in israel's right to self defence. but he also emphasised the need to get food, water and medicines into gaza. jeremy bowen has more. britain's prime minister came, he said, because israel faces its darkest hour. israel is welcoming its allies. it will need their support in the next few weeks. waiting injerusalem was benjamin netanyahu, israel's prime minister, a day after he welcomed joe biden. we absolutely support israel's right to defend itself in line with international law, to go after hamas, to take back hostages, to deter further incursions and to strengthen your security for the long—term. now, i know that you are taking every precaution to avoid harming civilians, in direct contrast to the terrorists of hamas, which seek to put civilians in harm's way. we have here two forces. one is an axis of evil led by iran, through hezbollah, hamas and others, that want to bring back the middle east of the middle ages, to an age of bondage and war and slavery and annihilation. and the other force is the forces of progress and humanity that want to push the middle east into a world of peace and prosperity. in southern gaza, united nations workers were among the wounded as israel's strikes continued. more thani million palestinians have fled to the south on israel's instructions. gaza's civilians, sealed off from the world by israel's siege, face catastrophe. aid has been waiting for days on the egyptian side of the border. joe biden persuaded the israelis to allow 20 lorries to cross into gaza tomorrow. injerusalem, philippe lazzarini, head of the un's agency for palestinian refugees, called unrwa, told me they need much more. a few days ago, you had some very strong comments after civilians sheltering in one of the unrwa schools were killed. is there is a safe place for anyone in gaza? there is no safe - place in gaza today. there is nowhere where the civilian population feels safe. _ what do you make of the biden plan? listen, we are calling - for a humanitarian corridor, but the humanitarian corridor needs to be uninterrupted, _ needs to be predictable. we will need at least 100 trucks a day. - if we cannot bring fuel and we have to bring i the water in bottles, _ we will need much, much more. we are now in a situation . where there is a total siege being imposed in the gaza strip. we are in a situation where more |than a million people have been| asked to be displaced. this amounts to collective l punishment, and collective punishment is a violation - of international humanitarian law. do you have any sympathy with the israeli perspective that hamas use people, they say, as human shields? israel has gone through a traumatic event. - i condemn this horrifici and barbaric massacre. but killing other people, - this event does not stilljustify that war is conducted | without any restraint. the war, he said, has left the middle east on the edge of an abyss. the united nations has called for a humanitarian ceasefire. and jeremyjoins us live from southern israel. there has been a constant fear that this war could escalate to the wider region and there are worrying details on that tonight? yes. region and there are worrying details on that tonight? yes, there are, clive hunter— details on that tonight? yes, there are, clive hunter first _ details on that tonight? yes, there are, clive hunter first of _ details on that tonight? yes, there are, clive hunter first of all, - details on that tonight? yes, there are, clive hunter first of all, as - details on that tonight? yes, there are, clive hunter first of all, as i i are, clive hunterfirst of all, as i said in the headline, the americans have said that one of their ships in the red sea has shot down a number of cruise missiles or drones, it does not seem clear, that may have been heading for targets in israel, that had been fired out of yemen. the houthis, who control large parts of the country, have an alliance with iran and iran has advanced technology for drones and cruise missiles so you can see a connection there. there has been more trouble up there. there has been more trouble up on the border with lebanon in the north. i have seen reports in israel tonight which i cannot personally confirm saying that the israelis may have killed up to three fighters from hezbollah macro who had been trying to fire into israel and on the west bank, apart from gaza, the other part of the elastin in occupied territories, there has been a protracted fight in a refugee camp —— palestinian occupied territories. that is between israelis and local palestinians and the israelis have killed a number of palestinians with a drone and as far as i know, that is still going on, the area is sealed off. you are talking about a lot of tension in a lot of places, not big explosions, as yet, but it certainly worries about spread and that has come as well from ursula von der leyen of the eu who has talked about the worry of the war spreading. the un is very concerned about it. and you can see from the different leaders who have been in the area, they are also concerned. rishi sunak spent this evening i think in saudi arabia, having been here today, and that is very high on their agenda, trying to keep this thing in one place, if they possibly can. , , * ., can. indeed, 0k, jeremy bowen, lived in southern — can. indeed, 0k, jeremy bowen, lived in southern israel, _ can. indeed, 0k, jeremy bowen, lived in southern israel, thank— can. indeed, 0k, jeremy bowen, lived in southern israel, thank you. - can. indeed, 0k, jeremy bowen, lived in southern israel, thank you. that - in southern israel, thank you. that is it from jerusalem, now back to tina. our political editor chris mason is with me in the studio. as we heard, a lot of tension in a lot of places. while the prime minister's visit to israel today have made a difference? a fair question, because he flies in for a couple of hours then flies out again and he is a single prime minister. downing street's argument was they wanted to show what they call physical solidarity, in other words turning up and being seen to turn up and being seen to care. the other thing we should mention is the wider diplomatic context. the german chancellor, jeremy leader, was there the other day, president of the united states there yesterday, british prime minister today and the french president expected soon and they are all kind of saying the same thing. they want to express outrage at what hammers did, acknowledge israel as a right to defend itself but they want to urge a calibration end that response —— they want to express outrage at what hamas did. saudi arabia are a key regional player, and it is with the hope that it diplomatically can use its influence to try and ensure that the coming escalation of the conflict in gaza doesn't spill out into the wider region.— gaza doesn't spill out into the wider region. gaza doesn't spill out into the wider reuion. ., ., ., wider region. the polomat then i have “ust wider region. the polomat then i have just closed _ wider region. the polomat then i have just closed into _ wider region. the polomat then i have just closed into mac - have just closed into mac by—elections in mid bedfordshire and tamworth in staffordshire. exactly what is at stake here? psychology will be interesting in this one because labour feel they are on the up and the conservatives feel they are on a bit of a slide and how does that match up with the results? saif ology, numbers, how do they square up in terms of which parties are rising —— sephology. fascinating is rather long night. we shau fascinating is rather long night. we shall find that the results in the morning? well, this was a retirement project. and i'mjusta bit... it'sjust not happening, is it? it's not happening... it's not happening. at paul and kim's housejust moments later, the official warning comes through. they're instructing people to leave their houses. i'm not going. are you going to? yeah. 0h, aye. i'm not. i'm not leaving my dog, i i am not doing this again. no way! i'm not going. she sobs a tough conversation. and this is just one family in one town. will they and others heed the advice? we're not going to be able to eliminate the disruption. i'm afraid there will be significant disruption given the amount of heavy rainfall that's likely to fall. but we want to first of all prioritise people's welfare and the way people can do that is listen to the advice, particularly in that red weather warning area. and the most important thing you can do is listen to the advice about travel. so if you're in the red weather warning area, do not travel. is this what they could be facing? parts of ireland have already been flooded. this is middleton in county cork yesterday. a town completely submerged. back here in brechin, they're bracing themselves. hour by hour, the river is rising, and as the night draws on what does that mean for the residents have decided to stay? you saw in that report kim, who didn't want to leave her home. she and others have decided to stay for and others have decided to stay for an hour and that is despite some tragic news tonight. police scotland said there are reports of someone going into the river about 20 miles from here and the body of a 57—year—old woman has now been found, and the message from angus council is more urgent tonight. the river levels in brechin could reach five metres, and the flood defences are only designed to cope with 3.8. it is due to peak in about three hours and if told to evacuate, the council says, hours and if told to evacuate, the councilsays, please hours and if told to evacuate, the council says, please leave. the time is now. fiona trott, thank you. the government's new chief scientific adviser described rishi sunak as "dr death" in private messages sent during a crucial pandemic meeting, the covid inquiry has heard. professor dame angela mclean made the comment in a whatsapp exchange in september 2020 — while mr sunak was the chancellor. our health editor hugh pym is here. give us some context the background to all of this is the eat outto help out scheme designed by rishi sunak when he was the chancellor in 2020 to get people to eat out in restaurants to help the economy —— eat out to help out. asked about that, the expert said he was still angered by that because of the link it had to direct infections. he said it was really the message it sent out to the public about behaviour, more than the actual link to a spike in infections. the message convened —— meeting convened in 2020 by boris johnson, with experts, some in favour of lockdown, some against, deciding what to do next at the time, and that included professor edmund, dame maclean and the inquiry was shown whatsapp messages between them in which she referred to doctor death the chancellor and she was asked, was that referring to eat out to help out? he said he couldn't remember but he thought it might be and of course dame angela is a the chief scientific adviser worshipping with the sunak administration. thank ou ve with the sunak administration. thank you very much. _ with the sunak administration. thank you very much. hugh _ with the sunak administration. thank you very much, hugh pym. _ with the sunak administration. thank you very much, hugh pym. -- - with the sunak administration. thank you very much, hugh pym. —— working with the sunak administration. the metropolitan police has apologised to the family of a teenage boy after an officer mistook his water pistol for a real gun. the 13—year—old — who's black — was surrounded by armed police and handcuffed while playing with his sister injuly. the boy's mother says she felt his treatment would have been different had he been white. our community affairs correspondent, adina campbell, reports. hackney, east london, the focus of another controversial police incident involving a black child. this time a 13—year—old boy handcuffed and detained by firearms officers. shortly before he was arrested the boy and his sister had been playing with water pistols when an unarmed officer mistook his water pistol for an actual handgun. this is what the family say the boy was holding at the time. former superintendent leroy logan was previously in charge of policing in this borough. he believes excessive force was used. if that young person was white, in hampstead, would those officers be ramming them with a vehicle, would they be doing a hard stop like that? so the context, i believe, is very important. lawyers and campaigners supporting the boy and his family say the actions of the officers have cause long—term damage. we have to remind ourselves this was the first time this young lad had any encounter with the police. when he saw the police vehicles, he didn't think that they were there for him. the metropolitan police says all firearms incidents are treated as real until proven otherwise. the force has also apologised to the family. an internal investigation by the met police has found no misconduct took place, but a complaint of racial bias is still being investigated. adina campbell, bbc news, hackney. in another sign of britain's housing problems, a council on the south coast says it could go bankrupt as it's having to spend so much of its budget on providing temporary accommodation. soaring rents and a lack of affordable housing mean over 100,000 households in england are living in temporary accommodation, costing councils £1.7 billion in the last financial year. well, now hastings council says spending a quarter of its budget in this way is unsustainable, as michael buchanan reports. ignore the name — the cafe is friendly and much—needed. half the eight staff here live in temporary accommodation, both working and homeless. 19—year—old keira lives in a one bed flat with her 19—month—old daughter. it's a bit tight for space. we stay in the same bed. she can't have her own bed because there's not enough room. we share the same wardrobe because there's not enough room. i'm never accepted for a property anyway. they'll give me a viewing, i'll view it and then they'll say to me, "we've passed it onto someone else," so i've never gotten anywhere. finding somewhere affordable is next to impossible. nicola skinner was made homeless in april when her landlord sold the property. the 33—year—old, her partner and four children couldn't find anywhere affordable in hastings. rental prices are so high that finding somewhere you can afford, even working and with a top up of universal credit, it so hard. of universal credit, it's so hard. and there's so many loops you have to jump through. a few of them were incomes of 30 times the monthly rent, which is impossible to try and reach. there are more than 500 families in temporary accommodation in hastings. soaring property prices mean they're in one of england's poorest towns. increasingly, families cannot afford a home. providing its homeless residents with a property is costing the council millions of pounds. a quarter of the council's whole budget is being spent on temporary accommodation. this could bankrupt the council. it's a strong risk, yes. we cannot make our budgets stack up if we continue to spend this amount of money on temporary accommodation, so that is a significant risk that the council faces, yes. a major problem here, as elsewhere, is that housing benefit levels have been frozen for three years while rents have rocketed — a point i put to the secretary of state for work and pensions. most, if not all, housing experts say that your decision to freeze local housing allowance is a direct contributory factor to the number of people in temporary accommodation. there are local funds that local authorities administer so that they are on the ground can identify people that need additional support, and we have put additional funds into that to extend that scheme until the end of march. these are all matters, including benefits, that i will review in the autumn. with no immediate government help on the horizon, hastings and scores of other areas will have to struggle with the fundamental reality of modern britain — for too many years we've simply built too few houses. michael buchanan, bbc news, hastings. as america shoots down missiles fired from yemen — possibly aiming for israel. the pentagon confirms in the last hour that it's intercepted missiles fired along the red sea — and says it will do whatever is neccessary to protect its partners. the region is on edge as the israelis brief that they were the targets of those missiles, and their army is ordered to prepare for action in gaza. as the israeli defence minsiter rallies his soldiers near gaza's border, we'll ask if diplomacy by the west and by the arab world can change israel's plan? we speak to the former israeli prime minister ehud barak, who's not thinking about backing off. we have to act and we have to win, and we will do it. also tonight... more than 200 hostages are still missing, most likely held in gaza.
