militants have continued to fire rockets into israel, towards tel aviv and other areas in the south. the world health organization has condemned israel's evacuation order; it says forcing hospital patients to relocate would be "a death sentence". president biden has spoken with the israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, and urged him to provide safety for civilians amid the bombardment. diplomatic efforts to prevent the violence from spreading have been stepped up, with mr biden*s secretary of state, antony blinken, visiting cairo. he's expected to press egyptian officials to restart talks on getting aid into gaza through the border crossing. the us is sending a second aircraft carrier to the eastern mediterranean near israel. the uss eisenhower will lead a group of ships aimed at deterring further attacks against israel — in particularfrom iran or the lebanese militant group, hezbollah. we start the hour with this report from our middle east correspondent, yolande knell. sirens wail. running from rocket fire, this was tel aviv overnight, with israel striking back at gaza and the us continuing its shuttle diplomacy. it blames hamas militants for this war and its fallout. the humanitarian crisis in gaza. innocent palestinian families and the vast majority have nothing to do with hamas. they're being used as human shields. applause. in gaza, hundreds of thousands of palestinians have been fleeing the most intense bombing they've ever seen after israel ordered a million people to head south. with desperate scenes, many are now seeking shelter in overcrowded un schools, with no aid coming in. at the border with egypt, palestinians with foreign citizenship are hoping the crossing will open so they can leave. among them, clutching her british passport, is mariam. i'm, like, really infearand, like, every...every time ijust have to have the thought of me dying in a bomb in gaza. like, it's... it's not a good thing. like, every place i go, i go run away, and ijust find bombs. and ifind dead people. and, like, maybe one day i'll end up like them. but it's a really scary thing for me. israel's military says it's getting ready for a comprehensive offensive against hamas by land, sea, and air. the prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, visited ground troops waiting just outside gaza. "the next stage is coming", he told them. "are you ready?" it's just over a week since hamas fighters crossed out of gaza and attacked israeli communities like bury. gunmen were caught on a security camera bringing all they needed to kill and kidnap. for israelis, the pain of the deadliest day in their country's 75—year history is raw and fears are growing for those held hostage like anab*s aunt. there is children without mother, there is mother without children. there is a husband without wife. ican't... i can't think about it there. we have to do everything to bring them back. this is... we owe it to them. the scale of this new conflict between israel and hamas is unprecedented, and every day its human cost is growing. yolande knell, bbc news, jerusalem. we spoke to foreign correspondent nick beake, who gave us this update. yes, this is about seven miles from gaza, ashkelon and there has been a distinctive bars of israeli drones in the air. also the fighter pilots are going overhead. that is the situation on the ground. we just heard from the israeli officials that there will be a window, three hour window, today in which people can move from the north of gaza to the south along one specific route. yesterday, there were two routes that were opened up for a bigger window. these timings are very much slipped. that is what the israelis are saying. all the while, of course, the united nations saying this is completely unacceptable. the world health organization, for example, trying to move people from the north to the south they say is just not feasible. they say specifically when you look at 2000 people who are intensive care and in maternity units, they are moving from the north to the south, that is tantamount to a extremely strong language from them. all the while israel saying it is carrying out a proportional response to the attacks by hamas just over a week ago and this is all part of an act of self—defence on their part. our correspondent mohamed taha from bbc arabic told us more about the latest on the situation. 2000 deaths in gaza and 1300 on the israeli side. amongst these, 12 journalists in gaza and southern lebanon, which is a really big number. the big front is the gaza front they are building up to invade gaza in the coming may be ours. there was talk about rain in tel aviv that might delay the decision little bit. but the attack will be imminent. the picture that we can see at the moment on the screen, these are the pictures from gaza. people are trying to flee their homes as the israeli army issued a recommendation for them to leave their homes before the offence. hospitals are in a dire situation as the israeli forces are asking 22 hospitals in northern gaza to evacuate their patients. the un said that this is... this is kind of death sentence to the patients in these hospitals. in the second front, the front of hezbollah in lebanon, where there are lower—level, if i may say so, comparing the level in gaza. low level of exchange between them. in the last hours, two deaths happened in the israeli side by... by... by... rockets from hezbollah. a member of hezbollah died from an israeli attack. the third front is the west bank where the israeli forces executed an incursion in the region. the full front is the syrian front where the israeli forces are saying the iranians —— fourth front. they say they are moving their troops in syria and they struck aleppo airport. on the other hand, you know, also, the americans brought the second carrier in case the iranians would do any further movements. all the updates... the audience can see it on the live update, the live page on the bbc website, where our colleagues are updating it around the hour. also, our correspondents went around gaza. one of our correspondence saw the situation in hospitals, in schools, where these tens of thousands of people left their homes and trying to find somewhere to live. they have built tense in the street. they are trying to squeeze themselves in hospitals. and in schools, as well. but the situation could be escalated also because of the egyptian position, that they do not want to open the borders to allow tens of thousands of palestinians to go to mount __ go —— go to sinai. they are trying to keep these borders under control as they don't want their national security compromised. this situation is getting worse in this direction. we have a few lines to bring you from various news agencies. reuters saying hezbollah's tv station has said a missile fired from lebanon, southern lebanon, has targeted —— and israeli village. a guided missile was used in the attack. we have also got afp news agency saying that israel is striking inside lebanon in response to anti—tank missile fire. reuters also saying the israeli military has declared a zone within four kilometres, around two miles, of the lebanese border, as off—limits to public access, saying it was deliberately disrupting gps services and on the southern front with gaza, as part of its operations. some of the latest details on what is going on in southern lebanon. also, from the israeli military, they are giving us figures saying at least 279 of its soldiers are now known to have been killed since last saturday. it says that the number of confirmed hostages in gaza is 126. we are also hearing from the israeli military, saying they will continue to enable palestinian civilians fleeing the gaza strip fleeing the fighting in the gaza strip to relocate south within the territory, adding hundreds of thousands had already heeded israel's evacuation order. there had been a timeframe given on those orders of about 2k hours and they extended it, saying there were six more hours on the safe routes they announced yesterday. they are now saying, from the israeli military, saying that it will continue enabling palestinians fleeing the fighting in the gaza strip to relocate south within the territory. those are the latest lines coming to you. we will keep across all of them and bring you all the latest developments on bbc news. sam cranny—evans is an associate fellow of the royal united services institute, the defence think—tank, and is a researcher in modern warfare. sam told us more about israel's capabilities ahead of the expected ground incursion. a really important part of the context is the hamas side of the equation and what level of resistance hamas decides to put up. we have seen an evolution to the past conflicts from 2008 through two now of hamas capabilities where they were fairly ineffective against the israeli forces initially and have become more resilient and determined as time has gone on. the israeli capabilities in that regard are sort of... conventional combined capabilities. they will use a lot of armoured vehicles, tanks, and infantry fighting vehicles, as well as fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft, so, helicopters and that kind of thing. in close coordination with each other in the cities, once they get in. the nature of the fighting, the length of the fighting, the length of the fighting, will really depend on that first element, the hamas resolve to fight and its determination to make a stand. urban warfare in particular tends to carry a high risk to civilians. as you can probably already see from the announcements, the civilians are trying to encourage gazans to leave the city. and evacuate it. there are very few cases throughout history of where thatis, cases throughout history of where that is, you know, super successful. very often, you kind of have a proportion of the city that will lead but not everybody. sometimes they will be kept against their own will, this was the case in mosul and iraq are where they were used as human shields to try to prevent coalition forces from bombing isis. yes it is likely that there will be continued civilian casualties. they have maximalist aims, dismantling hamas, its military capabilities and its ability to govern. that indicates they are very committed to a prolonged operation. again, coming back to that initial context, adults will depend on how much resistance hamas puts up, how willing they are to fight and risk their lives against the israeli forces. it is likely to be months. in the us, the pentagon has ordered a second aircraft carrier group to the eastern mediterranean. according to us officials, the uss eisenhower is part of american efforts to deter hostile actions against israel or any efforts toward widening the war. earlier we spoke to brendan kearney — a retired colonel with the us marine corps — who gave this assessment of the us military build up. i think they're all prudent moves. the united states was fortunate enough to have the gerald ford carrier battle group already in the med when all this, sadly, started here over a week ago. it's still going to take 8 to 10 days for this new carrier battle group to get there. and it's also going to take about the same amount of time for a marine amphibious ready group to come from the persian gulf, sail up through the suez to also get to the eastern med. and they willjoin us aircraft, us air force aircraft, that have already been pre—positioned in the far east there. so, it's...it*s a build—up of forces, but it's prudent. it's probably a wise move on the part of the american administration. i think, again, putting the forces over there and putting them in a position where if you have to use them, they are available. i don't think there's any preconceived decision on the part of the united states government to go ahead and get involved in this conflict. we've managed to stay out of most of them over the years when it comes to israel and these periodic conflicts with the arab nations and certainly with hamas and hezbollah. but if it comes to that, by having these forces there, the united states is going to be able to launch a very, very powerful strike against whether it's hamas, hezbollah, obviously sending a message to the group that's in charge of both of them, which is resident in iran right now. the israeli military has declared a zone within four kilometres of the lebanese border off—limits to public access on sunday and said it was deliberately disrupting gps services there and on the southern front with gaza as part of its operations. hugo bed shaker is in southern lebanon. live now to our correspondent hugo bachega, who joins us from tyre — near the border in southern lebanon, where there have been renewed exchanges of fire. this seems to be the latest incident along the lebanese— israeli border. we are still trying to confirm the details of what happened. we are hearing from israeli emergency services saying one person was killed and at least two injured in a community in northern israel that was hit by missiles that was filed from lebanese territory. unconfirmed reports suggest these are civilians. we just had a statement from hezbollah, the lebanese group, confirming that they had fired guided missiles towards israeli territory. hezbollah is saying this was in retaliation for the killing of a journalist here in lebanon on friday. these are the latest incident along the lebanese— israeli border. if it is confirmed that these are civilians who have been hit, and if it is confirmed that this is the death of a civilian in israel, it would be the first civilian casualty in israel as a result of the tensions along the border with lebanon. tensions have been high for days. we have been talking about these rockets, about shelling. it has been happening in places along the lebanese— israeli border. here, the fear is that lebanon could be dragged into this conflict. we have been reporting almost every day now since this war between israel and hamas broke out. incidents have been happening in places along the border. this seems to be the latest incident happening. again, missiles hitting an israeli community in northern israel. one per person confirmed dead and at least two injured. figs least two injured. as you say, the huge concerns about this - least two injured. as you say, the huge concerns about this conflictl huge concerns about this conflict spreading. there have been huge spread. antony blinken did a tour of four orfive nations and the king of jordan visited various countries in europe. we had from hezbollah saying it's fully ready to get involved when the time comes —— we heard from. huge concern about the conflict growing, isn't there? exactly. we have seen a massive effort in public and also behind the scenes to try to prevent an escalation in this conflict. a number of countries have been warning hezbollah to stay away from the war. we heard from the number two of hezbollah, who said that the group was ready. it was prepared and it was following what was happening at moment by moment. and that hezbollah would not be intimidated by these warnings being made by the us. and other countries. so far, we have seen that hezbollah's actions have seen that hezbollah's actions have been limited to these incidents, cross—border incidents. the united states has said that there hasn't been any evidence that hezbollah is preparing to have a larger involvement in this conflict but, obviously, we have been visiting villages here along the border with israel. many residents have left because they believe that fighting could escalate. and that this country could be dragged into this country could be dragged into this conflict. obviously, tensions are very high. i think everybody is paying attention to what hezbollah is going to do. paying minister rishi sunak will hold talks today with the king ofjordan, who is visiting several european countries to discuss the situation in gaza. king abdullah has said he is trying to rally international support to stop what he called "the war on gaza." with more on this now, i'm joined by our political reporter, tony bonsignore. rishi sunak has been very clear in his statement, macron and the german chancellor olaf scholz. they want to talk about, as you say, the rallying of international support for what they call this war on gaza. the jordanian government say the meetings will focus on the dangerous and deteriorating situation in gaza and deteriorating situation in gaza and the need to facilitate the provision of humanitarian aid to the palestinians. the message we are getting from downing street is that the meeting will focus on regional security issues in the middle east. as you say, lucy, the uk has been very firm in its support from israel. we had a statement last night from the british prime minister, rishi sunak, in which he said to the people of israel, i say britain is with you, israel has every right to defend itself and we will do everything we can to support israel in restoring the security it deserves. i am unequivocal, we stand with israel, notjust a day, not just tomorrow, but always. interestingly, no mention at all of the unfolding situation in gaza in that statement. in the last hour or so, the foreign british foreign secretary, james cleverly, has been talking to the british media. he said that "we said to the israeli government to do everything you can to minimise civilian casualties and prevent what hamas wants". this is the british foreign secretaryjames cleverly. he says hamas wants to turn this into a wider conflict. there has been criticism from amnesty international, saying it is deeply troubling that the prime minister didn't mention palestinians being killed in this and also talking about how he didn't mention the call for international law to be upheld. keir starmer, the labour leader, has been talking about this as well, hasn't he?— as well, hasn't he? yeah, he also released a _ as well, to, quote, "wipe out hamas". the operation is in retaliation for hamas attacks on israeli communities last week, shooting dead civilians and taking hostages. thousands of people are fleeing the north of gaza, following israeli evacuation orders — as the humanitarian crisis in the territory deepens. the un estimates nearly a million palestinians there have now been displaced. and the palestinian health authority says more than 2,000 people have been killed in israeli air strikes. the world health organization has condemned israel's order for the evacuation of 22 hospitals in northern gaza, ahead of an expected ground offensive against hamas. they said forcing more than 2,000 patients — including those in intensive care and new—borns in incubators — to relocate to southern gaza "could be tantamount to a death sentence". and president biden has spoken to the israeli and palestinian leaders — as the us steps up efforts to contain the escalating conflict. mr biden urged israel to provide safety for palestinian civilians and to issue a condemnation of hamas. and the us secretary of state, antony blinken, will visit egypt today as part of a tour of arab countries aimed at preventing the violence from spreading. the un, us, egypt, jordan and others in the region are working together to ensure innocent civilians have access to water, food, and medical care in gaza. rishi sunak will warning against it, saying violence isn't the path. the absence of hope won't get as anywhere. we have been working on trying to avoid this and to open a path which would restore faith and "some of the dead have been here for two days", this man tells us. "these freezers are meant forfood, not bodies." and this is right in the south of gaza, where people are now being told to go. hundreds of thousands are now heading in this direction. the question is, where do they go? at the border with egypt, hundreds of palestinians who are lucky enough to have foreign citizenship, are hoping to get out. the nearby united nations school is packed with those seeking shelter, but it was already at full capacity before this latest evacuation order. "as palestinians, what did we do for this to happen to us?", hanan asks. she tells us she ran out of the house barefoot with nothing when israel bombed her neighbourhood, and came straight to the school. at noon today, many were praying — one would think for better times. many of those here are children, still smiling despite it all. around half gaza's population is under 18, and some are old beyond their years. ramez is just 15. this is his fifth war. political correspondent nick eardley is in aberdeen for us this morning and gave us the latest. that debate on independence is this afternoon, it's all about strategy, the snp wants to try and formulate, to force another referendum. the idea the leadership has is to say, "if we win the most seats in scotland in the general election, a majority of seats, i should say, at a general election, then we will use that as a mandate to start talking to the uk government about independence." is it going to work? i'm not so sure, because uk governments, be they conservative or potentially labour ones, are saying they will not agree to another independence referendum. and, in truth, while the snp wants to talk about independence, it has been a pretty difficult few months for the biggest party in scotland. they are currently seeing a police investigation into party funding. last week, one of their mps quit and joined the conservatives. they got absolutely thumped in a by—election a couple of weeks ago by labour. and there are a lot of people in the snp that are really worried, the polls suggests they are going to lose a lot of seats at the next general election, that there is going to be a real struggle for them to hold on to the level of support they have. so, look, there is always a lot of talk about independence at snp conferences. but there's also a big question facing the party about its future, about whether it can maintain its dominance in scottish politics. i think a lot of people here in aberdeen over the next few days are going to be looking to the leadership for a strategy about how to get back on the front foot. at the moment, that looks pretty tricky. poland is electing a new parliament today in a vote which is too close to call — but that both sides say will determine the country's future direction. the governing right—wing law and justice party is battling to secure a record third term in office — while the liberal opposition civic platform led by former prime minister donald tusk hopes to oust them. live now to sarah rainsford, our correspondent, in warsaw. this has been quite a bitter campaign, hasn't it? it this has been quite a bitter has, it's- been extremely bitterly fought. very divisive campaign. the bitterness largely comes from this is too close to call, two key parties battling out the selection. we are at a polling station in warsaw, the palace of youth in the heart of the city. it has been busy here, people coming from seven o'clock when the polls opened. many people coming with their children, lots of elderly people and people bringing their dogs. lots of people saying this is an extremely important day for poland. in terms of deciding what kind of future the country has. critically, in terms of deciding its relationship within the eu, because opposition has been pointing to the eu's concerns with the state of democracy in poland, particularly the rule of law. there's an awful lot of eu funding withheld over concerns of the politicisation of the courtier. there are other issues to do with the independence of the media, that the opposition is pointing to. as for the governing party, they are painting this as important, painting the opposition as a threat to polish security, highlighting issues to do with migration. they want to control that much more tightly than they believe the eu will allow them to do. an awful lot at stake, and some bitter language. each side calling the other evil in the campaigning for the selection. quite extraordinary language used so far. what the selection. quite certainly to the extent that the governing party law and justice talk about security and standing firm against russia as part of it. there has been a border wire fence which didn't exist before, there's also a big fence on the border with belarus. security is an issue. there's been quite a change in the rhetoric from the governing party on ukraine in recent weeks. that is some concern to kyiv, there's been antagonism in the relationship with kyiv, which is new, because this government has welcomed millions of ukrainians into the country. there is more than 1 ukrainians into the country. there is more than1 million refugees here, poland is vital to the aid effort and military effort supporting ukraine. the government has been talking critically about ukraine recently, about continuing weapons supplies and ukrainian grains. it is thought about appealing to the far right voters who are anti—ukrainian, that the government needs. will it continue in this more hostile tone towards ukraine, orwhetherto in this more hostile tone towards ukraine, or whether to continue to be a vital partner for ukraine and help the western support effort for ukraine? . ~ help the western 1,300 people. the epicentre of the 6.3 magnitude quake was about 30 kilometres north—west of the city of herat. details are still coming in, but hospital authorities in herat said one person had been killed and about 100 had been injured. many people have been sleeping in the open since last week's earthquakes, which flattened several villages in remote areas. now to australia where thousands of people have been attending pro—palestinian rallies in the state capitals today, despite police threats to curb them, amid high tensions. one of the largest rallies was in sydney, where protest organiser, the palestine action group, said around 5,000 people attended. many rally—goers waved palestine flags and chanted "free, free palestine". earlier we heard from the bbc*s phil mercer in sydney. the australian administration is led by the labour prime minister, anthony albanese, and he was very quick a week ago to condemn those attacks on israeli civilians and territory within israel by hamas militants. and we're hearing today that the australian foreign minister penny wong, is trying to organise evacuation flights out of tel aviv. these would be government chartered aircraft and military planes for australian citizens wanting to leave the region. so as far as australia is concerned, this is an extremely dangerous fluid situation, and as far as those citizens of australia wanting to leave, the government in canberra is trying to do all it can to take them to safety. so it's safe to say that this is a story that is dominating the news agenda here in australia. both sides of the conflict are extremely concerned about what is unfolding many thousands of kilometres away in the middle east. the rallies in australia follow a number of protests across the world. tens of thousands of people gathered for pro—palestinian demonstrations in the uk amid growing international concern over the situation in israel and gaza. marchers filled the streets of central london on saturday as thousands also gathered in manchester, liverpool, edinburgh and other parts of the uk. in california, thousands of protestors also took to the streets of los angeles in support of palestinians. the world health organization says an order by israel to evacuate more than 20 hospitals in northern gaza is tantamount to a death sentence for some of the sick. they have expressed concern for people on life—support and newborn babies in incubators. health centres in the south are also at maximum capacity. tens of thousands of civilian are moving ahead of unexpected ground offensive in gaza. earlier, my colleague spoke to an executive director of the humanitarian organisation. she described the situation for people in gaza. it is re situation for people in gaza. it 3 pretty catastrophic. we've had a week of relentless bombings, thousands of bombs dropping down on a small piece of land in the north and south of gaza, producing many dead and many more wounded. at the same time, electricity and water cut—off a week ago, we are getting to the point where the snow access to the point where the snow access to clean water and electricity to run the medical facilities anyway. in the last couple of days, this evacuation, this has led to chaos. we have 300 staff, some have managed to move to the south and are trying to move to the south and are trying to transfer patients. some have to stay in the north and continue to run medical care there. they are describing also chaos and despair. i want to talk more about it, because we've heard aboutjournalists being targeted, air strikes on civilian infrastructure. how dangerous is it for your team is on the ground? it is incredibly dangerous. the majority of our team are palestinians, so they live in gaza, they've never seen anything of this scale before. we are seeing ambulances being hit, medical facilities, and as people were moving south, they could hear the bombs, they didn't feel safe. they are incredibly worried about being caught up in it, injured themselves. many of our staff have lost family members. our international staff are stuck in the same situation, either staying in the north or choose to move to the south. the same scenario applies to them. even once they get to the south, there's nowhere for them to stay. they are trying to find a place on the floor, somewhere in a school on a mattress. there is a sense of no way out, no escape. but as doctor natalie roberts. she was talking to my colleague earlier. we are going to bring you some pictures from gaza. this is inside gaza now, one of the hospitals treating many of the wounded. very shaky pictures, the camera person keeps moving around. we've heard today the world health organization talking about this order by israel to evacuate more than 20 hospitals in northern gaza. we are just looking at pictures of one of the hospitals, but 20 hospitals have been told they need to evacuate as part of this order were people in gaza to move from the north down to the south. this is the skyline you can see of gaza. some other lines coming in in the last half an hour is that missiles fired from lebanon into israel. one man was killed and two others wounded in northern israel, according to the israeli emergency services. we will keep you up—to—date across all areas on bbc news. hello, again. it's been a pretty cold start to the day. in fact, for some of us, it's been the first frost of the autumn. temperatures got down below freezing across many northern areas, down to minus four celsius in cumbria. but even further south in oxfordshire and south wales, those temperatures got down just below freezing. lots of sunshine, though, through this morning. that will continue throughout the afternoon. it will stay dry for most of us. one or two showers just around the coast there of norfolk clipping the coastline, showers coming in across northern and western areas of scotland. but generally speaking, fewer showers compared to yesterday. still a little bit breezy across scotland, but those winds are not as strong as they were yesterday and lighter winds as well for england and wales. and temperatures this afternoon getting up to about 9 to 12 degrees celsius. if anything, it could be, in fact, a bit colder than it was yesterday. now through this evening and tonight, still a few showers across northern scotland, down the north sea coast as well. there'll be some fog developing across northern england, parts of wales and south west england as well that could be quite dense into tomorrow morning. and again, it's going to turn quite chilly. these are the temperatures in the towns and cities, 2 to four degrees. but heading to the countryside, those temperatures once again close to if notjust below freezing. monday morning starts off, though, with this area of high pressure situated across the uk. a weather frontjust bringing some showers across the far north of scotland throughout the day. on monday, there could be a few showers coming into kent, perhaps into south west scotland as well. but for most of us it's going to be a dry day. the patchy mist and fog in the morning will clear away variable amounts of cloud, really. so there will be some bright, some sunny spells, but perhaps more clouds compared to today. and temperatures once again, about 11 to 13 or 14 degrees. as we go through the rest of the week, that area of high pressure gradually moves away to the east and then we'll see low pressure moving in from the south. and that will bring some spells of rain, strengthening winds as well across many parts of the uk. and with that southerly flow, we are going to see milder air slowly moving its way in as well. so it won't be quite as cold as we go through the later stages of next week. so just a summary then really for monday and tuesday look dry with some sunny spells, wednesday onward, that's when it turns more unsettled. but you notice those temperatures rising about 13 to 17, perhaps even 18 degrees. bye— bye. live from london, this is bbc news. israel's army prepares for a ground offensive of the gaza strip, the next phase of its military operation against hamas. there's growing concern for the humanitarian situation in gaza, where hundreds of thousands of people have fled to the south. every time ijust have to have the thought of me dying in a bomb in gaza. like, its not... it's not a good thing. the world health organization has condemned israel's order for the evacuation of 22 hospitals in northern gaza. and president biden speaks to the israeli and palestinian leaders — as the us steps up efforts to contain the escalating conflict. welcome to the programme. israel has renewed its warning for people in the northern half of gaza to leave, as it continues intense air strikes across the territory. troops are massed on the border with gaza ahead of an expected ground incursion. the israeli defence force say they have struck over 100

militants have continued to fire rockets into israel, towards tel aviv and other areas in the south. the world health organization has condemned israel's evacuation order; it says forcing hospital patients to relocate would be "a death sentence". president biden has spoken with the israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, and urged him to provide safety for civilians amid the bombardment. diplomatic efforts to prevent the violence from spreading have been stepped up, with mr biden*s secretary of state, antony blinken, visiting cairo. he's expected to press egyptian officials to restart talks on getting aid into gaza through the border crossing. the us is sending a second aircraft carrier to the eastern mediterranean near israel. the uss eisenhower will lead a group of ships aimed at deterring further attacks against israel — in particularfrom iran or the lebanese militant group, hezbollah. we start the hour with this report from our middle east correspondent, yolande knell. sirens wail. running from rocket fire, this was tel aviv overnight, with israel striking back at gaza and the us continuing its shuttle diplomacy. it blames hamas militants for this war and its fallout. the humanitarian crisis in gaza. innocent palestinian families and the vast majority have nothing to do with hamas. they're being used as human shields. applause. in gaza, hundreds of thousands of palestinians have been fleeing the most intense bombing they've ever seen after israel ordered a million people to head south. with desperate scenes, many are now seeking shelter in overcrowded un schools, with no aid coming in. at the border with egypt, palestinians with foreign citizenship are hoping the crossing will open so they can leave. among them, clutching her british passport, is mariam. i'm, like, really infearand, like, every...every time ijust have to have the thought of me dying in a bomb in gaza. like, it's... it's not a good thing. like, every place i go, i go run away, and ijust find bombs. and ifind dead people. and, like, maybe one day i'll end up like them. but it's a really scary thing for me. israel's military says it's getting ready for a comprehensive offensive against hamas by land, sea, and air. the prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, visited ground troops waiting just outside gaza. 2000 deaths in gaza and 1300 on the israeli side. amongst these, 12 journalists in gaza and southern lebanon, which is a really big number. the big front is the gaza front they are building up to invade gaza in the coming may be ours. there was talk about rain in tel aviv that might delay the decision little bit. but the attack will be imminent. the picture that we can see at the moment on the screen, these are the pictures from gaza. people are trying to flee their homes as the israeli army issued a recommendation for them to leave their homes before the offence. hospitals are in a dire situation as the israeli forces are asking 22 hospitals in northern gaza to evacuate their patients. the un said that this is... this is kind of death sentence to the patients in these hospitals. in the second front, the front of hezbollah in lebanon, where there are lower—level, if i may say so, comparing the level in gaza. low level of exchange between them. in the last hours, two deaths happened in the israeli side by... by... by... rockets from hezbollah. a member of hezbollah died from an israeli attack. the third front is the west bank where the israeli forces executed an incursion in the region. the full front is the syrian front where the israeli forces are saying the iranians —— fourth front. they say they are moving their troops in syria and they struck aleppo airport. on the other hand, you know, also, the americans brought the second carrier in case the iranians would do any further movements. all the updates... the audience can see it on the live update, the live page on the bbc website, where our colleagues are updating it around the hour. also, our correspondents went around gaza. one of our correspondence saw the situation in hospitals, in schools, where these tens of thousands of people left their homes and trying to find somewhere to live. they have built tense in the street. they are trying to squeeze themselves in hospitals. and in schools, as well. but the situation could be escalated also because of the egyptian position, that they do not want to open the borders to allow tens of thousands of palestinians to go to mount __ go —— go to sinai. they are trying to keep these borders under control as they don't want their national security compromised. this situation is getting worse in this direction. we have a few lines to bring you from various news agencies. reuters saying hezbollah's tv station has said a missile fired from lebanon, southern lebanon, has targeted —— and israeli village. a guided missile was used in the attack. we have also got afp news agency saying that israel is striking inside lebanon in response to anti—tank missile fire. reuters also saying the israeli military has declared a zone within four kilometres, around two miles, of the lebanese border, as off—limits to public access, saying it was deliberately disrupting gps services and on the southern front with gaza, as part of its operations. some of the latest details on what is going on in southern lebanon. also, from the israeli military, they are giving us figures saying at least 279 of its soldiers are now known to have been killed since last saturday. it says that the number of confirmed hostages in gaza is 126. we are also hearing from the israeli military, saying they will continue to enable palestinian civilians fleeing the gaza strip fleeing the fighting in the gaza strip to relocate south within the territory, adding hundreds of thousands had already heeded israel's evacuation order. there had been a timeframe given on those orders of about 2k hours and they extended it, saying there were six more hours on the safe routes they announced yesterday. they are now saying, from the israeli military, saying that it will continue enabling palestinians fleeing the fighting in the gaza strip to relocate south within the territory. those are the latest lines coming to you. we will keep across all of them and bring you all the latest developments on bbc news. sam cranny—evans is an associate fellow of the royal united services institute, the defence think—tank, and is a researcher in modern warfare. sam told us more about israel's capabilities ahead of the expected ground incursion. a really important part of the context is the hamas side of the equation and what level of resistance hamas decides to put up. we have seen an evolution to the past conflicts from 2008 through two now of hamas capabilities where they were fairly ineffective against the israeli forces initially and have become more resilient and determined as time has gone on. the israeli capabilities in that regard are sort of... conventional combined capabilities. they will use a lot of armoured vehicles, tanks, and infantry fighting vehicles, as well as fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft, so, helicopters and that kind of thing. in close coordination with each other in the cities, once they get in. the nature of the fighting, the length of the fighting, the length of the fighting, will really depend on that first element, the hamas resolve to fight and its determination to make a stand. urban warfare in particular tends to carry a high risk to civilians. as you can probably already see from the announcements, the civilians are trying to encourage gazans to leave the city. and evacuate it. there are very few cases throughout history of where thatis, cases throughout history of where that is, you know, super successful. very often, you kind of have a proportion of the city that will lead but not everybody. sometimes they will be kept against their own will, this was the case in mosul and iraq are where they were used as human shields to try to prevent coalition forces from bombing isis. yes it is likely that there will be continued civilian casualties. they have maximalist aims, dismantling hamas, its military capabilities and its ability to govern. that indicates they are very committed to a prolonged operation. again, coming back to that initial context, adults will depend on how much resistance hamas puts up, how willing they are to fight and risk their lives against the israeli forces. it is likely to be months. in the us, the pentagon has ordered a second aircraft carrier group to the eastern mediterranean. according to us officials, the uss eisenhower is part of american efforts to deter hostile actions against israel or any efforts toward widening the war. earlier we spoke to brendan kearney — a retired colonel with the us marine corps — who gave this assessment of the us military build up. i think they're all prudent moves. the united states was fortunate enough to have the gerald ford carrier battle group already in the med when all this, sadly, started here over a week ago. it's still going to take 8 to 10 days for this new carrier battle group to get there. and it's also going to take about the same amount of time for a marine amphibious ready group to come from the persian gulf, sail up through the suez to also get to the eastern med. and they willjoin us aircraft, us air force aircraft, that have already been pre—positioned in the far east there. so, it's...it*s a build—up of forces, but it's prudent. it's probably a wise move on the part of the american administration. i think, again, putting the forces over there and putting them in a position where if you have to use them, they are available. i don't think there's any preconceived decision on the part of the united states government to go ahead and get involved in this conflict. we've managed to stay out of most of them over the years when it comes to israel and these periodic conflicts with the arab nations and certainly with hamas and hezbollah. but if it comes to that, by having these forces there, the united states is going to be able to launch a very, very powerful strike against whether it's hamas, hezbollah, obviously sending a message to the group that's in charge of both of them, which is resident in iran right now. the israeli military has declared a zone within four kilometres of the lebanese border off—limits to public access on sunday and said it joins us from tyre — near the border in southern lebanon, where there have been renewed exchanges of fire. this seems to be the latest incident along the lebanese— israeli border. we are still trying to confirm the details of what happened. we are hearing from israeli emergency services saying one person was killed and at least two injured in a community in northern israel that was hit by missiles that was filed from lebanese territory. unconfirmed reports suggest these are civilians. we just had a statement from hezbollah, the lebanese group, confirming that they had fired guided missiles towards israeli territory. hezbollah is saying this was in retaliation for the killing of a journalist here in lebanon on friday. these are the latest incident along the lebanese— israeli border. if it is confirmed that these are civilians who have been hit, and if it is confirmed that this is the death of a civilian in israel, it would be the first civilian casualty in israel as a result of the tensions along the border with lebanon. tensions have been high for days. we have been talking about these rockets, about shelling. it has been happening in places along the lebanese— israeli border. will focus on the dangerous and deteriorating situation in gaza and deteriorating situation in gaza and the need to facilitate the provision of humanitarian aid to the palestinians. the message we are getting from downing street is that the meeting will focus on regional security issues in the middle east. as you say, lucy, the uk has been very firm in its support from israel. we had a statement last night from the british prime minister, rishi sunak, in which he said to the people of israel, i say britain is with you, israel has every right to defend itself and we will do everything we can to support israel in restoring the security it deserves. i am unequivocal, we stand with israel, notjust a day, not just tomorrow, but always. interestingly, no mention at all of the unfolding conflict. there has been criticism from amnesty international, saying it is deeply troubling that the prime minister didn't mention palestinians being killed in this and also talking about how he to, quote, "wipe out hamas". the operation is in retaliation for hamas attacks on israeli communities last week, shooting dead civilians and taking hostages. thousands of people are fleeing the north of gaza, following israeli evacuation orders — as the humanitarian crisis in the territory deepens. the un estimates nearly a million palestinians there have now been displaced. and the palestinian health authority says more than 2,000 people have been killed in israeli air strikes. the world health organization has condemned israel's order for the evacuation of 22 hospitals in northern gaza, ahead of an expected ground offensive against hamas. they said forcing more than 2,000 patients — including those in intensive care and new—borns in incubators — to relocate to southern gaza "could be tantamount to a death sentence". and president biden has spoken to the israeli and palestinian leaders — as the us steps up efforts to contain the escalating conflict. mr biden urged israel to provide safety for palestinian civilians and to issue a condemnation of hamas. and the us secretary of state, antony blinken, will visit egypt today as part of a tour of arab countries aimed at preventing the violence from spreading. the un, us, egypt, jordan and others in the region are working together to ensure innocent civilians have access to water, food, and medical care in gaza. rishi sunak will political correspondent nick eardley is in aberdeen for us this morning and gave us the latest. that debate on independence is this afternoon, it's all about strategy, the snp wants to try and formulate, to force another referendum. the idea the leadership has is to say, "if we win the most seats in scotland in the general election, a majority of seats, i should say, at a general election, then we will use that as a mandate to start talking to the uk government about independence." is it going to work? i'm not so sure, because uk governments, be they conservative or potentially labour ones, are saying they will not agree to another independence referendum. and, in truth, while the snp wants to talk about independence, it has been a pretty difficult few months for the biggest party in scotland. they are currently seeing a police investigation into party funding. last week, one of their mps quit and joined the conservatives. they got absolutely thumped in a by—election a couple of weeks ago by labour. and there are a lot of people in the snp that are really worried, the polls suggests they are going to lose a lot of seats at the next general election, that there is going to be a real struggle for them to hold on to the level of support they have. so, look, there is always a lot of talk about independence at snp conferences. but there's also a big question facing the party about its future, about whether it can maintain its dominance in scottish politics. i think a lot of people here in aberdeen over the next few days are going to be looking to the leadership for a strategy about how to get back on the front foot. at the moment, that looks pretty tricky. poland is electing a new parliament today in a vote which is too close to call — but that both sides say over concerns of the politicisation of the courtier. there are other issues to do with the independence of the media, that the opposition is pointing to. as for the governing party, they are painting this as important, painting the opposition as a threat to polish security, highlighting issues to do with migration. they want to control that much more tightly than they believe the eu will allow support effort for ukraine? ., ~ , ., , help the western support effort for ukraine? ., ~ i. , . another strong earthquake has hit western afghanistan, days after two powerful tremors killed more than 1,300 people. the epicentre of the 6.3 magnitude quake was about 30 kilometres north—west of the city of herat. details are still coming in, but hospital authorities in herat said one person had been killed and about 100 had been injured. many people have been sleeping in the open since last week's earthquakes, which flattened several villages in remote areas. now to australia where thousands of people have been attending pro—palestinian rallies in the state capitals today, despite police threats to curb them, amid high tensions. one of the largest rallies was in sydney, where protest organiser, the palestine action group, said around 5,000 people attended. many rally—goers waved palestine flags and chanted "free, free palestine". earlier we heard from the bbc*s phil mercer in sydney. the australian administration is led by the labour prime minister, anthony albanese, and he was very quick a week ago to condemn those attacks on israeli civilians and territory within israel by hamas militants. and we're hearing today that the australian foreign minister penny wong, is trying to organise evacuation flights out of tel aviv. these would be government chartered aircraft and military planes for australian citizens wanting to leave the region. so as far as australia is concerned, this is an extremely dangerous fluid situation, and as far as those citizens of australia wanting to leave, the government in canberra is trying to do all it can to take them to safety. so it's safe to say that this is a story that is dominating the news agenda here in australia. both sides of the conflict are extremely concerned about what is unfolding many thousands of kilometres away in the middle east. the rallies in australia follow a number of protests across the world. tens of thousands of people gathered for pro—palestinian demonstrations in the uk amid growing international concern over the situation in israel and gaza. marchers filled the streets of central london on saturday as thousands also gathered in manchester, liverpool, edinburgh and other parts of the uk. in california, thousands of protestors also took to the streets of los angeles in support of palestinians. the world health organization says an order by israel to evacuate more than 20 hospitals in northern gaza is tantamount to a death sentence for some of the sick. they have expressed concern for people on life—support and newborn babies in incubators. health centres in the south are also at maximum capacity. tens of thousands of civilian are moving ahead of unexpected ground offensive in gaza. earlier, my colleague spoke to an executive director of the humanitarian organisation. she described the situation for people in gaza. it is re situation for people in gaza. it 3 pretty catastrophic. we've had a week of relentless bombings, thousands of bombs dropping down on a small piece of land in the north and south of gaza, producing many dead and many more wounded. at the same time, electricity and water cut—off a week ago, we are getting to the point where the snow access to the point where the snow access to clean water and electricity to run the medical facilities anyway. in the last couple of days, this evacuation, this has led to chaos. we have 300 staff, some have managed to move to the south and are trying to move to the south and are trying to transfer patients. some have to stay in the north and continue to run medical care there. they are describing also chaos and despair. i want to talk more about it, because we've heard aboutjournalists being targeted, air strikes on civilian infrastructure. how dangerous is it for your team is on the ground? it is incredibly dangerous. the majority of our team are palestinians, so they live in gaza, they've never seen anything of this scale before. we are seeing ambulances being hit, medical facilities, and as people were moving south, they could hear the bombs, they didn't feel safe. they are incredibly worried about being caught up in it, injured themselves. many of our staff have lost family members. our international staff are stuck in the same situation, either staying in the north or choose to move to the south. the same scenario applies to them. even once they get to the south, there's nowhere for them to stay. they are trying to find a place on the floor, somewhere in a school on a mattress. there is a sense of no way out, no escape. but as doctor natalie roberts. she was talking to my colleague earlier. we are going to bring you some pictures from gaza. this is inside gaza now, one of the hospitals treating many of the wounded. very shaky pictures, the camera person keeps moving around. we've heard today the world health organization talking about this order by israel to evacuate more than 20 hospitals in northern gaza. we are just looking at pictures of one of the hospitals, but 20 hospitals have been told they need to evacuate as part of this order were people in gaza to move from the north down to the south. this is the skyline you can see of gaza. some other lines coming in in the last half an hour is that missiles fired from lebanon into israel. one man was killed and two others wounded in northern israel, according to the israeli emergency services. we will keep you up—to—date across all areas on bbc news. hello, again. it's been a pretty cold start to the day. in fact, for some of us, it's been the first frost of the autumn. temperatures got down below freezing across many northern areas, down to minus four celsius in cumbria. but even further south in oxfordshire and south wales, those temperatures got down just below freezing. lots of sunshine, though, through this morning. that will continue throughout the afternoon. it will stay dry for most of us. one or two showers just around the coast there of norfolk clipping the coastline, showers coming in across northern and western areas of scotland. but generally speaking, fewer showers compared to yesterday. still a little bit breezy across scotland, but those winds are not as strong as they were yesterday and lighter winds as well for england and wales. and temperatures this afternoon getting up to about 9 to 12 degrees celsius. if anything, it could be, in fact, a bit colder than it was yesterday. now through this evening and tonight, still a few showers across northern scotland, down the north sea coast as well. there'll be some fog developing across northern england, parts of wales and south west england as well that could be quite dense into tomorrow morning. and again, it's going to turn quite chilly. these are the temperatures in the towns and cities, 2 to four degrees. but heading to the countryside, those temperatures once again close to if notjust below freezing. monday morning starts off, though, with this area of high pressure situated across the uk. a weather frontjust bringing some showers across the far north of scotland throughout the day. on monday, there could be a few showers coming into kent, perhaps into south west scotland as well. but for most of us it's going to be a dry day. the patchy mist and fog in the morning will clear away variable amounts of cloud, really. so there will be some bright, some sunny spells, but perhaps more clouds compared to today. and temperatures once again, about 11 to 13 or 14 degrees. as we go through the rest of the week, that area of high pressure gradually moves away to the east and then we'll see low pressure moving in from the south. and that will bring some spells of rain, strengthening winds as well across many parts of the uk. and with that southerly flow, we are going to see milder air slowly moving its way in as well. so it won't be quite as cold as we go through the later stages of next week. so just a summary then really for monday and tuesday look dry with some sunny spells, wednesday onward, that's when it turns more unsettled. but you notice those temperatures rising about 13 to 17, perhaps even 18 degrees. bye— bye. live from london, this is bbc news. israel's army prepares for a ground offensive of the gaza strip, the next phase of its military operation against hamas. there's growing concern for the humanitarian situation in gaza, where hundreds of thousands of people have fled to the south. every time ijust have to have the thought of me dying in a bomb in gaza. like, its not... it's not a good thing. the world health organization has condemned israel's order for the evacuation of 22 hospitals in northern gaza. and president biden speaks to the israeli and palestinian leaders — as the us steps up efforts to contain the escalating conflict. welcome to the programme. israel has renewed its warning for people in the northern half of gaza to leave, as it continues intense air strikes across the territory. troops are massed on the border with gaza ahead of an expected ground incursion. the israeli defence force say they have struck over 100
