Israeli forces say they have struck a hezbollah target in Southern Lebanon overnight, and yesterday there was more intense shelling. Our correspondent hugo bachega is there. Hugo, what more can you tell us about these strikes and the likelihood of this War Escalating . Good morning. Let mejust give good morning. Let me just give you first an update on whats happening here on the ground, because earlier this morning the Israeli Military said it had struck a target belonging to hezbollah in Southern Lebanon on. It said this was in response to what it described as the infiltration of unidentified aerial objects into israel and also fire on an israeli drone. They said they had intercepted these objects and also at the fire on this drone, and this is the latest incident, it seems, between hezbollah and israel in Southern Lebanon. And obviously the fear here, the question hanging over this country, is what is hezbollah going to do . So yesterday we had the first civilian death in ii on, a video journalist with the Reuters News Agency was killed. Six other journalists were also injured. They were in a village not really far from our position here, just an hours drive in the south of the country, very close to the border with israel. And we have seen that in the last few days, as israel and hezbollah have been exchanging rockets and shelling, and hezbollah obviously is a powerful organisation here. It says it has 100,000 fighters. It has a vast arsenal of weapons, just like hamas, it is considered to be a Terrorist Organisation by the uk, by the us. So the question here is obviously what hezbollah is going to do next as this war between hamas and israel continues. ,. ,. , continues. Hugo, for the moment, thanks very continues. Hugo, for the moment, thanks very much. Of course, we will keep you updated with all development throughout the day here on bbc news. Ill have all the details throughout the programme. Its saturday 14 october. Our main story Tens Of Thousands of people have fled Northern Gaza, but many still remain, after the Israeli Military gave them 24 hours to leave the area before it launches a major Ground Offensive. They were ordered to move south of the wadi gaza as israeli troops prepare to hunt down and destroy hamas, which is regarded as a Terror Organisation by many western governments, including the uk. Around 1,900 people have died so far in israeli air strikes on gaza, according to Palestinian Health officials. Limited ground raids in gaza have already taken place, and there are reports that the bodies of some israeli hostages have been recovered. They were taken a week ago by hamas militants in attacks which left 1,300 people dead. In the last few minutes, the Israeli Military has confirmed they will allow Safe Passage For Gazans on two roads leading to the south of the territory between 10 00am and 4 00pm local time. Our Reporter Nickjohnson has the latest details. Fleeing for their lives, those living in the north of the gaza strip heading south. 1. 1 Million People, roughly the same size as the entire population of birmingham, were told by israel they had 24 hours to leave their homes. It happened to our grandfathers, now its happening to us, mohammed says. Its raising the ghosts of the past. The bombs still fall, tearing buildings and families apart. Translation we are striking our enemies with an unprecedented power. Our enemies havejust begun to pay the price. I cant divulge what comes next, but i can tell you this isjust the beginning. The un Secretary General urged both sides to protect civilians. Even wars have rules. International humanitarian law and Human Rights Law must be respected and upheld. Civilians must be protected and also never used as shields. It is exactly a week since hamas gunmen rampaged through Southern Israel. Families are still coming to terms with the lives lost this memorialfor tom godo, killed while protecting his wife and three children during the attack on a kibbutz. At least 150 israelis were kidnapped. Families of the victims leaning on each other for support, katias son among those missing. Translation we are very anxious. Our hope is that our child comes back. We cannot think otherwise. Our child has to come home. A deep sense of foreboding the Ratcheting Up of this crisis crisis seems inevitable. These are live pictures of gaza, where Israeli Forces are planning to attack hamas fighters and, they hope, Rescue The Hostages who were taken last weekend. The northern part of the area is where many people have been moving. They have been lines of people and vehicles formed on the route south, and in an hour, that is when that window, according to Israeli Defence forces spokespeople, saying that there is a window from ten oclock local time, there is a window from ten oclock localtime, in an there is a window from ten oclock local time, in an hour our time, when there will be Safe Passage For Gazans. We also understand they have been more moves in terms of skirmishes and incursions into the gazan area by Israeli Defence forces this morning ahead of that ground invasion. Our correspondent nick beake is in the israeli city of ashkelon, just a few miles north of gaza. Good morning to you. We have heard about those limited ground raids. What more can you tell us about that, and also this news that there is this window now for these two main roads to open for people to travel south . Goad people to travel south . Good morning people to travel south . Good morning we people to travel south . Good morning. We are people to travel south . Good morning. We are about i people to travel south . Good j morning. We are about seven people to travel south . ems morning. We are about seven miles away from gaza here and the latest we are hearing from the israeli officials is that they have been carrying out what they described as localised ground raids. In other words, they say they have been going in to try and eliminate hamas members and also to try and clear out any weapons they may have. At the same time, there are reports certainly in Israeli Media that some bodies have been discovered of hostages. That has not been confirmed by the israeli army. They have said, though, that they believe someone hundred and 20 hostages are still being held in gaza, and so operations continue. Part of the reasons they say they are going on is to try to find information to launch possible rescues. As i say, we are near gaza and overhead every now and then you can hear a thud in the distance. But it was here and in lots of places in Southern Israel exactly a week ago that people woke up exactly a week ago that people woke up to here rockets coming towards them as the hamas incursion began. 0f them as the hamas incursion began. Of course, that changed everything, and we have seen the response from the israeli government, the israeli army, over the past week or so, and that continues, and the impact of that continues, and the impact of thatis that continues, and the impact of that is in gaza. We have heard that overnight many people have been trying to leave the northern part of gaza and moving to the south. That is because, as you say, the israelis have said that they need to get out in terms of a Ground Offensive coming, and so they are urging civilians to leave. The israelis are saying again this morning they are not targeting civilians, they are trying to give them warning, they respect their lives, but more people have been killed trying to flee from the northern parts, so the death toll continues all the while and there are these international warnings, the latest coming from the European Unions Foreign Policy chief, who says the key idea of shifting more than a Million People from Northern Gaza to the south is utterly impossible. Simply, you cannot do it. It is something that cant be achieved. fiend cannot do it. It is something that cant be achieved. Cannot do it. It is something that cant be achieved. And when we see these international cant be achieved. And when we see these international calls, these international calls, particularly from the un, do you think they are landing at all . T think they are landing at all . I think they are landing at all . I think when you listen to a lot think they are landing at all . T think when you listen to a lot of people in the international community, whether it is america, the united kingdom, the United Nations, you mentioned specifically, on the one hand they are saying that they are standing with israel, they say that absolutely has the right to defend itself, but at the same time they are talking about how even in a war, even in conflict, civilian life must be respected. And interestingly, from the head of the United Nations, he has been saying that the idea of moving people out would be extremely dangerous. Instead, his focus is on humanitarian corridors. Allowing people to leave when they are not going to be shelled, they are not going to be shelled, they are not going to be shot at, and as you mentioned, the israelis have said this morning that there is this window, it looks like it will be about six hours or so, starting at 10am local time, so about an hour from now, where they say that gazans will be able to leave on two main roads and they will be able to travel south. That was an announcement that was made by the Israeli Military on their arabic language website, certainly on twitter that was what they have been putting out. So that is the latest from here. Putting out. So that is the latest from here from here. Nick, thank you very much. Israeli forces say they have struck a hezbollah target in Southern Lebanon overnight, and yesterday there was more shelling. Our correspondent hugo bachega is there. Hugo, what more can you tell us about these strikes and the likelihood of this War Escalating . Yes, good morning to you. Let me give you an update on a statement we just had from the Israeli Military, because the israelis are saying that they have killed a number of militants who were trying to infiltrate into israel from Southern Lebanon. So this is a statement that was issued and published by the idf just moments ago, and obviously this camejust hours after just moments ago, and obviously this came just hours after israel said it had struck a target used by hezbollah in Southern Lebanon on. So these incidents are happening in this region between lebanon and israel, and there are fears here that has polar could get involved in this war hezbollah. Yesterday we had the first civilian death in lebanon since this war between hamas and israel broke out. The reuters video journalist was killed, and israel broke out. The reuters videojournalist was killed, six others were injured, and this happened in a village and our s drive from our position here. And again, in the last few days, we have seen that israel and hezbollah have been trading rockets and shelling in that part of the country, so i think the fear here is that if this violence as escalates, lebanon could be dragged into this conflict. And we are covering this incident in france, charlie. France, charlie. Yes, france deploying france, charlie. Yes, france deploying 7000 france, charlie. The former cricketer turned tv presenter Freddie Flintoff has reached a financial agreement with the commercial wing of the bbc, bbc studios, after he was involved in a crash while filming top gear last december. The settlement is reported to be for £9 million. Our correspondent frances read has the details. Freddie flintoffjoined top gear in 2019, attracting millions of viewers, but then news that last december he had been in a crash while filming. After that he wasnt seen for months, then in september, a glimpse of what Freddie Flintoff had been through, helping out with the england mens team with injuries that hed received the year before. Then earlier this month, another glimpse of how it had impacted him, as he described how the england team had been there for him. People will share the good times with you, the successes. But as i found over the past few months, in the hardest times in your life, who will stand next to you . Very few details about the crash were revealed, other than that he was at a test track in surrey and that he had to be taken to hospital. The bbc suspended its latest series of top gear after that, and at the time said there would be a full and independent Health And Safety review of the show. The Health And Safety executive, which regulates Workplace Safety, said no further investigation was needed, although bbc studios also conducted its own investigation. Bbc studios now says it has reached an agreement with Andrew Flintoff that it believes supports his continued rehabilitation, return to work and future plans. It says, we have sincerely apologised to freddie and will continue to support him with his recovery. Reports in the sun suggest that agreement could be some £9 million, but that has not been confirmed by Freddie Flintoff or the bbc. Bbc studios is a commercial company, so whatever that figure is, it doesnt come from the bbc license fee. As for the future of top gear, the bbc hasnt commented, although it previously said a decision would be made in due course. The Democratic Unionist leader Sirjeffrey Donaldson will address his partys annual Conference Today. Hes expected to focus on his talks with the westminster government about the ongoing political crisis in Northern Ireland, which has had no devolved government for 18 months. Heres our ireland correspondent chris page. The Democratic Unionist Party says Northern Irelands place in the uk has been damaged by a trade border in the irish sea. That has led the dup to block the formation of a Power Sharing devolved government at stormont since early last year. The party leader, Sirjeffrey Donaldson, will soon have a decision to make which will define his career and the future of politics here. His talks with the westminster government about unionists concerns are believed to be in the final stages. We reached the end of the year. Were into the trajectory for a general election, and i think its likely in those circumstances government are going to focus elsewhere. Thats why i am keen to make every effort that we can to get an agreement. I dont know if thats going to be possible, but i will continue working at this to try and get that solution. This month some changes have come into force under a new arrangement between the uk and the eu. The deal known as the Windsor Framework is designed to ease checks on goods coming into Northern Ireland from Great Britain, but the dup says the new system of ports isnt enough in itself to resolve all the issues. Most other parties in Northern Ireland and the Prime Minister are pressing the dup to allow devolution to return. Sirjeffrey donaldsons Conference Speech will be closely analysed in london for signals of his intentions. He is expect it to say that the rights of unionists cant be treated as less important than those of irish nationalists. The coming weeks will be a critical time if a Power Sharing partnership is to be restored. Chris page, bbc news, belfast. It is now 7 19am. One of the uks Largest Energy suppliers, octopus, is calling on the government to introduce specific help for households struggling with energy debt. It comes after the regulator ofgem announced that billions of pounds is now owed to suppliers. Radio 4s money box reporter Dan Whitworth can tell us more. Good morning. Good to see you. These numbers, they are quite interesting. What do they actually mean . Interesting is one way. Scary, quite frankly, is another. They have three numbers for you. Number frankly, is another. They have three numbers foryou. Number one frankly, is another. They have three numbers for you. Number one is to buy £6 billion, the record level of debt owed by consumers to suppliers stop that level of debt is shared by 2. 2 million households, that is how many households owe that debt. If you divide that debt by the number of households you reach an average debt of nearly £1200. It is worth noting energy, utilities, they are called a priority debt. Things like your rent or your mortgage, your counsel to, your utility bills are priority debts, so if you are struggling with that kind of debt, chances are your personal finances are struggling in general and its those numbers i have been talking to Raquel Fletcher from Octopus Energy about. ,. ,. , Raquel Fletcher from Octopus Energy about. ,. , about. This is the tip of the iceberg as well, because this is summer debts, as well, because this is summer debts, when typically you would expect debts, when typically you would expect most customers to be able to pay their expect most customers to be able to pay their energy bills, so its very distressing pay their energy bills, so its very distressing going into the winter that we distressing going into the winter that we have seen that summer debts rise that that we have seen that summer debts rise that much. This 2. 6 billion pounds worth of debt was recorded in april, may, june of this year, a jump of 44 on the previous three months when it was one billion. I know there are a lot of numbers, but what is important is a record level of debt. As Rachel Fletcher from Octopus Energy to said, this is in the summer, you would not necessarily expect this type of debt in the summer, you are not necessarily expected in the winter, because it is so high. She has basically been talking to me about, as you said in the introduction, because of the sheer scale of this problem that is why she is pulling on the government to get involved. I why she is pulling on the government to get involved. To get involved. I really dont want to get involved. I really dont want to think about to get involved. I really dont want to think about that, that it is only| to think about that, that it is only going to think about that, that it is only going to to think about that, that it is only going to go up would be my expectation, unless we see governments stepping in. Although its october, so officially winter hasht its october, so officially winter hasnt started, it is not too late for government to come up with a package for government to come up with a package for those households and, you know. Package for those households and, you know, as a supplier we would work you know, as a supplier we would work as you know, as a supplier we would work as fast you know, as a supplier we would work as fast as we possibly could to aet work as fast as we possibly could to get government money into customers pockets get government money into customers pockets as get government money into customers pockets as quickly as possible. You hear about these record profits and you report them on breakfast and thatis you report them on breakfast and that is what sticks in the guts of some people, you hear these record levels of energy debts and huge profits of some suppliers. They are obviously talking one off profits. As i say, most people operate on very thin margins and the suppliers are taking additional steps to try to help some of the most vulnerable. On a practical note, if you are one of those people and maybe you have a small amount of debt, is a small, relatively small, not the 1200, does just carry on growing. If you not in a position to clear it, as you may well not be, what does happen . Essentially, yes, it does carry on growing. That is the whole problem. Hello, this is breakfast, with Charlie Stayt and naga munchetty. Lets return to our main story now and the situation in The Middle East. This morning we know that Tens Of Thousands of people have fled Northern Gaza. Many still remain after the Israeli Military gave them 24 hours to leave the area before it launches a major Ground Offensive. They were ordered to move south of the wadi gaza as israeli troops prepare to hunt down and destroy hamas, which is designated as a Terror Organisation by many western governments, including the uk. That deadline has passed. However, in the last hour or so, Israeli Forces have said that they will allow Safe Passage For Gazans on two roads which lead to the south of the territory between 10am and 4pm local time. So that window will open in around half an hour. We know that israel is also fighting on its northern border with lebanon. The army says it has struck a hezbollah target in Southern Lebanon overnight and yesterday there was more shelling. In the last few minutes, we know that the Israeli Military have said that they have killed a number of militants who were trying to enter is rarely territory. It has been exactly a week since hamas gunmen killed 1300 people and took israeli captives. At least 120 people are still being held. Our correspondent Frankie Mccamley has been speaking to the relatives who have confirmed details of those who are still missing or may have been taken hostage after up to 150 people were taken captive when hamas launched its surprise attack last saturday. In order for are still missing, as well as her uncles carer. In orderfor our team to try to work out from those who are missing who might have been taken hostage, we have been listening to the testimonies of dozens of families. Some say they are on the phone were on the phone to their loved ones just before they were taken. Others have managed to track mobile phones before they were cut off. We have also been sent videos from families that appear to show their relatives being put into the back of vans and trucks before being driven off. As for where people have been taken after videos like this emerge, it is unclear. We also dont know what condition they are in. And the complexity of this ever changing situation has been highlighted again in the case of shani louk, it has to artist from germany. She was at the supernova Music Festival, which was stormed by militants who killed at least 260 people and kidnapped many others. News outlets were initially reporting that she had died after this footage emerged of her in the back of a pick up truck, which we have edited because it is too upsetting to show. But after her mother released a video to german media to say she believes shani is in hospital and alive, which is the desperate hope for so many other families. At this is a war with no end in sight. From marseille to paris, the squares and bars will be filling up by those fans lucky enough to be there. Wales will fancy their chances against argentina and england should beat fiji but, remember, lost to them in a warm up match in august. And what about ireland, the world number one side . A Match Against the three time winners, who have found their form and now stand between ireland and a first ever world cup semifinal. Our Sports Correspondent Andy Swiss Looks ahead. Theyve already had plenty to cheer at this world cup. Chanting wales, wales, wales . Now ireland, wales, and england fans are hoping for even more. Ireland have never been beyond the Quarter Finals, but then they have never been this good. Six nations champions and world number ones, and while theyre up against three time winners new zealand, they believe its their time. When we we kids we didnt dream of ireland winning the world cup. I suppose weve put ourselves in a position now to go and do that. But its something to go and get, its not something to be pressured about. Here in marseille, meanwhile, wales and england will also be hoping to reached the semifinals. Both face big challenges, but both have big chances. Wales are up against argentina, a team they have a decent record against. Commentator davis darts, ducks, gets over and the travelling Fans Descending on marseille cant wait. As for england, well, theyll also start as favourites against fiji on sunday. But after a stuttering tournament so far, can they rise to the occasion . Theyve got players that have been to world cup finals. Theyve won trophies, european trophies, premiership trophies. They have the players in the camp. We just havent seen the best of them yet. Maybe theyll leave to the quarter final. All the signs, then, point to an enthralling weekend, but the home nations will be hoping their world cup journey is far from over. Andy swiss, bbc news, marseille. Away from the world cup, and rugby unions premiership got back underway last night as Leicester Tigers were beaten by bristol bears. In rugby league, its the Season Finale this evening, the Super League Grand final at old trafford, with Catalans Dragons hoping to become the first french side ever to win the competition. Itll also be the final game in the glittering career of their star player sam tomkins. The legend joined us on breakfast yesterday. Hes up against his former club Wigan Warriors for the domestic games biggest prize. Adam wild reports. The road to the grand final is long. There is no club that travelled further than catalan dragons, from the South Of France to old trafford, a fitting reward for another superb season. We have a lot of fans, really passionate, as you can see last week in the semi final. So well have a lot of support in france, and flying the flag for french rugby league. An area with a rich rugby league heritage, but still these last few years feel as much a french renaissance as a french revolution. I think its well documented. The game was banned, and our older generation across there fought to keep the game alive. So for us to create our own piece of history, we understand the importance of it, and well get it. Still, every final needs its fairytale, and every fairytale needs its heroes. Sam tomkins one last game before retirement for the former england captain. Commentator sam tompkins will win this wonderful semifinal for the catalan dragons one of the greats of the modern game, and against the club with whom he won three titles a dream swansong, perhaps. No, i couldnt have written an ending like this. You know, getting here is amazing. Thats not the dream ending, though. The dream ending is winning here. Knowing i wont get any other chance, this is my final chance, means that it will be the biggest game of my career. Well, catalan as a club have been here before, but, crucially, they have never won this. Wigan, on the other hand, have lifted this famous trophy here five times before. And, of course, they have their own french connection. Commentator Wigan Warriors Captain Bevan French just this week, bevan french was named super leagues man of steel for the years outstanding performer. You pick up a football, you know, at five years old to play in grand final and things like this. So weve spoken about the engagement and what it means to us, and its very special for all of us. Well, it is a grand final entrance like no other. This final, though, will feel very different from wigans last. Three years ago, no old trafford indeed, no crowd the pandemic final extraordinary for so many reasons. Wigan lost dramatically, as their local rivals st helens continued their recent dominance, one that many at wigan are relieved to see finally at an end. Wigan winning a grand final, wigan winning a trophy, is a huge thing. Ourfans have had a long history of being at such events and, as you say, its been too long since this trophy has been at wigan. And were 80 minutes away. There are plenty of ways to frame this final the tompkins final, perhaps, or wigans return from the established order against those continuing to upset it. But ultimately its the seasons top two clubs, and despite the distance, theres almost nothing between them. Adam wild, bbc news. Onto football, and england warmed up for tuesdays huge Euro Qualifier against italy with a narrow victory over australia in a friendly at wembley last night. It wasnt the most sparkling performance, and manager Gareth Southgate was furious that some fans booed Jordan Henderson when he was substituted. England rested most of their regular starters and australia will be kicking themselves that they didnt take advantage, not taking their chances while eventually england took one of theirs, Ollie Watkins there when it mattered. This was the momentJordan Henderson was taken off and got booed. He now plays his Club Football in saudi arabia and is 33. But manager Gareth Southgate says the booing defies logic, saying hes a role model and i dont understand it. As for the match, it was rather disjointed. Just the one goal thanks to Ollie Watkins. Wont get many easier ones. The Republic Of Irelands hopes of reaching the euro 2024 finals are over after a 2 0 home defeat by greece. Two first half goals mean the greeks leapfrog the netherlands into second place in group b. The return of teenage striker Evan Ferguson could not lift Stephen Kennys men as their dismal campaign continued. Ireland have now won one and lost five of their six matches so far. Now a big moment for certain sports, and the olympics. At last, many would say, squash will be featured at the los angeles 2028 games, and cricket will be making its long awaited return, now theyve beem approved by the International Olympic committee. Cricket s only previous appearance at the olympics was at paris in 1900, when Great Britain beat france in the final. There is expected to be both a t20 mens and womens tournament at the la games, with the United States set to field a side as host nation. Keir starmer said it was obvious that what we are witnessing is terrorism and four of the uks senior lawyers complained to the regulator of comic impartiality. A substantial dual majority of news viewers agreed with them, including yvonne nazarova wrote Abdul Mohammed agreed. But chris from newcastle had a different view. Is not the first time the bbc has been involved in a row over the use of over the t word. In Margaret Thatcher put pressure on the bbc which it resisted to refer to the ira is terrorist. And since then the corporation has used that term in describing the bright, patrick mcnair, and in relation to the bomb attacks in in 2005 and manchester in 2017. So why not on this occasion . Two people sent us videos asking that question. First, wendy. According to the terrorism act, hamas is a prescribed Terrorist Organisation. Terminology matters. It is how we think and respond. The term millitants is inadequate. Its a euphemism. It avoids responsibility of calling out terrorism for what it is. It sidesteps atrocity. That wasnt the only language issue facing bbc news this week. Some members of the audience detected a buyers not against israel, but against palestinians, as evidenced by this tweet which speaks of more than 500 people having died in gaza and more than 700 people being killed in israel. We were e mailed. So some strongly felt responses to the bbcs response in this week from yours. Lets get a response from Richard Burgess the director of news content for bbc news. Thank you for coming on newswatch. Terrorism. The bbc has used the word in response to the 7 7 attacks on the manchester bombers, why not in this case . First of all, let bombers, why not in this case . First of all. Let me bombers, why not in this case . First of all, let me just bombers, why not in this case . First of all, let me just say bombers, why not in this case . First of all, let me just say i bombers, why not in this case . F st of all, let me just say i appreciate that a lot of the audience dont really understand our position and dont necessarily agree with it. They dont think anybody watching our coverage over the past few days of the hamas attacks could be in any doubt about the nature of those attacks. We have had reporters on the ground, weve had video stock and, you know, we describe those events as murder, massacre, atrocities, and you will have heard the word terrorist use a lot on the bbc by people obviously ascribing that word to them, describing them, plus, as you say, we have regularly been saying hamas is a prescribed terrorist group, a prescribed terrorist group, a prescribed terrorist group, a prescribed terrorist group by the uk government and a number of other western governments. But why we dont, the bbc doesnt call hamas terrorists, goes back to our editorial guidelines, its around impartiality. We think its pretty fundamental, because the word terrorist and terrorism is a loaded term, particularly in a highly politicised conflict like this one and it can appear that you are taking one side or you are taking the other side. And it also leads to a situation where, going forward, you are going to have to make a valuejudgement about you are going to have to make a value judgement about every act of violence in every conflict in every country and that isnt a position that we think the bbc can or should be in. But i honestly think the most important thing here is it should be the quality of our reporting, our people on the ground that are conveying the true nature and, frankly, the appalling nature of the hamas attacks in the past few weeks. Some viewers might wonder if the merger of the world and the domestic news channel has made it more difficult for the bbc in navigating the line on how to describe hamas. I dont think so. But we are an independent International Broadcaster and so of course thats part of our consideration when we make these decisions. But as you show before, this is actually a long standing policy and throughout the years we think it has stood the test of time and served us well in maintaining what is absolutely fundamental to the bbc and that is impartial news broadcasting. Its. Impartial news broadcasting. A specific one, viewers picked up on a bbc social media post about israelis being killed and palestinians in gaza died. Was that an error of judgement . I gaza died. Was that an error of judgement . Gaza died. Was that an error of judgement . Gaza died. Was that an error of uduement . , ,. , judgement . I dont think it was the createst judgement . I think goes to the point how important language is in the coverage of this story and its difficult and its sensitive and its an extremely emotional multilayered story and when you juxtapose two things like that i dont think it worked and i think it was a mistake. That i dont think it worked and i think it was a mistake. Those of us old enough think it was a mistake. Those of us old enough room think it was a mistake. Ida. Terrorist in relation to hamas . No, as i said you. Terrorist in relation to hamas . No, as i said you. We terrorist in relation to hamas . Iifr, as i said you, we think this is absolutely fundamental. It is one of our kind of founding principles, if you like. You have seen people like john simpson, our most senior journalist, jeremy bowen come out this week and talk about this and talk about weight so important to us and we think it is critical as this conflict continues, as this war continues, that we are able to maintain this neutral position, this position of impartiality and we think this gives greater strength to our reporting. In The Middle East, Tens Of Thousands have fled Northern Gaza, but many remain after the Israeli Military gave them 24 hours to leave the area before it launches a major Ground Offensive. They were ordered to move south of the wadi gaza as israeli troops prepare to hunt down hamas, prescribed as a Terrorist Organisation by the uk. The order came by thousands of leaflets dropped from the sky. As you can see, the deadline has passed. 30 minutes ago, a six hour window was openedin minutes ago, a six hour window was opened in which the Israeli Military has said it will allow Safe Passage For Gazans on the two main roads leading from the south of the territory. We know israeli air strikes on gaza have killed around 1900 people so far. Continued overnight as well. The israelis say one of them killed a senior hamas commander who played a prominent role in attacks last weekend, in which 1300 israelis died and more than 120 were taken hostage. Relatives of those hostages are still facing a desperate wait for information. There were unconfirmed reports overnight in some israeli newspapers that some limited ground raids into gaza have taken place in the bodies of some hostages were recovered. Our correspondent lucy manning has been talking to people in britain with relatives in israel and gaza who were killed or remain unaccounted for. David barr and his sister in law, naomi, flying the flag of the team where he grew up. Naomi, she was loved by herfamily, and shell be missed by all of us. Thats just one story out of 1,300. We are all finding it hard to just mourn for our own because were mourning for everybody. Gunfire and rockets piercing the tranquility of the agricultural kibbutz alumim near gaza. They slaughtered the 16 foreign workers. It was just. Shooting, missiles, shooting. As we left the gates, bodies, cars riddled with bullets. Bodies everywhere. I said to my wife, dont look. Just dont look. Weve lost friends. Weve lost families. Do you fear for your kids future . Actually, i have one whos in london. And he phoned me, he said, abba, daddy, im coming home. I said to him, dont come. Not now. Yet he feels for ordinary palestinians. We have friends. We had workers from gaza, from the gaza region, palestinians. My heart is out for them as well. Theyre hostages like we are. As we spoke, the sirens sounded. Weve got an air raid. You have to go, yeah. Ive got to move. In london, palestinian chef ali alaqad feels helpless not knowing if his wife mona and their 19 month old son hamed are alive in gaza. Maybe hes die now because there is no electric, no battery, nothing. From the morning, i call my wife. Block, she doesnt answer. Why is attack all the people . The children, people . Why . My wife, hamas . My son, two years old. Hamas . I want my wife and my son. Families feeling the despair, the worry. Everything so bleak. Lucy manning, bbc news. Ultimately, it is the seasons top two clubs and despite the distance, there is almost nothing between them. England warmed up for tuesdays while mo qualifier in a friendly last night at wembley. Not the most sparkling performance, but what got Gareth Southgate upset was some fans were bullying Jordan Henderson when he was substituted. Australia will be kicking themselves they didnt make the most of england resting a lot of their star players, the socceroos didnt take their chances. Ollie watkins of aston villa replaced harry kane and sly did it in when it mattered. This was the momentJordan Henderson was taken off, he got booed. He plays Club Football in saudi arabia. He is 33, but manager Gareth Southgate said the booing defied logic and he is a role model and hejust doesnt understand it. Northern ireland who cant qualify for euro 2024 will have a chance of some points when they host minnows san marino. It is also over for Republic Of Ireland as their poor run continued. They were beaten at home 2 0 by greece who leapt from the netherlands in second place to make group b interesting. Ireland have won and lost one once and lost five. Portugal are assured of a place after last nights round of games. Now for the squash players, huge moment for the sport after years of campaigning, finally, it will get a place at the olympics as part of the los angeles 2028 games along with other sports like flag american football. The tensions mean few if any pakistan fans will be for todays match because of the trouble in obtaining visas, but the pakistan captain has said this is a glorious moment for his players to be heroes in the cauldron of india and those india fans roaring the hosts on. It is going to be a big crowd. Thanks, mike. From big retail chains to local corner shops, many businesses are struggling with increasing levels of shoplifting and abuse of staff. Facial recognition cameras can help reduce those sorts of crimes, but some politicians and privacy campaigners are calling for them to be banned as our reporter explains. Give me my phone now. Give me my phone or i am going to hurt you. Give me my phone. A surrey shop workers reality of dealing with a shoplifter. Punched, attacked with a weapon and forced to defend himself with a shopping basket. Then comes the racial abuse. Threats from a different customer. Daniel, seen in the blue top, reaches for the panic button. So this is our standard cctv camera thats been there for years. And this is our new face watch camera. This service station has been in Daniels Family for 17 years. Recently, hes doubled the amount of cctv cameras and invested in a facial recognition camera, which he hopes will deter crime. And whilst this assault led to the conviction of a repeat offender, daniel feels police still need to do more for all levels of crime. They will close down the case almost immediately once the case has been registered. They dont follow up on it. The only time we have found them following up on quite proactively is if its been involved in another crime elsewhere and they kind of tag this along. Shopliftingis always been an issue and that has always been in the back of our mind. But when it started getting physical assaults on staff, thats when we thought, this is not fair on them and we need to do something about it. To give you an idea of how this face recognition system works, the team here are treating me like a shoplifter. Theyve used an image of me coming into the shop before, put a black mark against it. So whenever i come in next, theyre alerted on an app. James runs a Gardening Centre near swanley. Hes been using a facial Recognition Software since 2020. Here, a suspect is recognised by the cameras, detained by staff and arrested by police. Hed been in the shop two weeks earlier and stole £1,500 worth of toys. You take it personally. When people steal from you, they dont realise the implications that has. It affects the profitability of the business, it affects employment. Weve got over 90, i think 96 cctv cameras and one security guard, so its impossible for him to monitor everything. Beauty of face watches, as soon as weve uploaded their image onto our system, or its an image that another business is uploaded on the system, it pings our phones as soon as they walk into our automatic doors. So we know theyve arrived almost before they do. When that person arrives, shop owners usually ask them to leave, ban them or contact police. The software itself costs three and a half thousand pounds a year and is used by big name brands like sports direct, but its deemed controversial. Live facial recognition is a really intrusive, very Controversial Surveillance Technology that essentially treats ordinary shoppers like potential criminals. Faces are being scanned every time they walk into a shop. Thats really personal, sensitive biometric data about you. Simon gordon is the founder of face watch, one of the companies which owns the software. What would you say to people who might be worried about their images being used or about their privacy . Privacy is the whole reason that we exist, really. The biometric data, the measurements of your face that are created, which is what facial recognition is, is deleted the second its been compared to that database. What if its wrong . We have two algorithms and then we have human super recognisers who then check the alerts either before they go out orjust after theyve gone out, so they can withdraw them if they are wrong. Shoplifting has become a massive problem and its continually getting worse. Up 24 this year. Nationally, i think its right that businesses do take steps to protect themselves. Youd expect any business to do that, including the use of Camera Technology and the larger stores, the use of security guards. But i, as police minister, also expect the police to be there to attend the scene and to protect retailers. Responding to daniels concerns, Surrey Police said its working to identify suspects who target his business and it will look at putting in measures to prevent more thefts. And while some say facial Recognition Technology is pricey, for others, its a price worth paying. Josie harnett, bbc news. This weekend, you want to know about the weather, simon, what have you got . Quite warm, 21. 6 degrees in hereford and brize norton, but all change today and through the weekend. 40 degrees is the maximum temperature across southern areas. You will notice that differences out and about. 14. Plenty of sunshine, lovely star already and thatis sunshine, lovely star already and that is kent with clear blue skies. Further west, a few showers around this morning and that has given lovely rainbows already this morning. That was in devon earlier on today. You might see more rainbows across northern and Western Areas of the uk where we see most of the showers. But with that colder air, there could be winching us as well, particularly over the Higher Ground of scotland. Snow could be accumulating later today. Still strong winds, gales in the far north east, though showers coming in on a blustery westerly winds, drifting to the south east, sunny spells in between, sunny someplace is staying dry and maximum temperatures ten to 14 celsius. A big change to recent days and weeks. Tonight, still showers towards the west around the irish sea. Still snow showers over Higher Ground in scotland. Clear skies for most into Sunday Morning and that allows temperatures to fall away. A frost across Northern England into scotland and Northern Ireland, even across southern areas, those temperatures close to freezing at one or two celsius. First thing tomorrow morning, it will be cold, but it will be a crisp start to the day. Lots of clear skies and sunshine. Fewershowers day. Lots of clear skies and sunshine. Fewer showers around tomorrow and any that do occur will be across northern scotland and one or two around the irish sea. Lots of sunshine and later winds, but still quite chilly out there with maximum temperatures at 10 or 11 celsius. Into next week, we keep the largely settled conditions. Higher pressure is across is at the moment. And that will continue into tuesday and wednesday. Before late in the week, we see weather fronts from the south. Starting a new working week, quite chilly, some frost around, but lots of sunshine again. Cloud across northern and Western Areas at times. A few showers in the far north of scotland. But again, those temperatures about 11 to 12 or even 30 celsius. Tuesday again is looking largely fine with some sunshine. Temperatures in the low teens for tuesday and wednesday. But into the end of the week, we start to see weather fronts from the south and that brings a bit of rain. And we see some showers at times. But temperatures creep up a little bit. 16, 70 celsius for thursday and friday and into next weekend. While temperatures have been way above the average so far for october and autumn in general, over the next few days, temperatures below the average for the time of year. Before they, to rant about the average into the end of next week. It is evening out, thank you. Coleen rooney turned amateur detective to discover who had been sending stories about her to a national newspaper. And she pointed the finger at another footballer s wife, Rebekah Vardy. Now she has told her side of the so called Migratory Court case for a documentary on disney plus, take a look. Have you still got the post on your phone . Yeah, yeah. Can we see it . Theyre my words. And i stick by them. Archive Wagatha Christie starts today at the high court. Fellow wags and former friends embroiled in a bitter row. Someone of my personal account was informing the Sun Newspaper of my private posts and stories. I thought, im going to do something about it. This is a detective story. You never find the person. Responsible with a smoking gun in her hand. She was going to lose her trial. I needed evidence. I had to set a trap. Never in a million years would i have said, oh, you just go on your instagram settings, you upload fake stories. Chanting dont play games. With a girl who can play better. The documentary is out on wednesday. Lets talk to scott bryant. Good morning. This really did have quite an impact when it came out. Those who are interested were following it very, very closely. So what will we find out in this documentary that we didnt know . That find out in this documentary that we didnt know . Didnt know . That is the big tuestion didnt know . That is the big question because didnt know . That is the big question because this didnt know . That is the big question because this was i didnt know . That is the big question because this was a didnt know . That is the big question because this was a huge case. It resulted in massive allegations on instagram with. It is Rebekah Vardy s account. This has been a story we have seen play out in the high court. There was also a channel 4 dramatisation using key passages. I guess the question is, what is this three part documentary telling us that we dont already know . As you saw in a trailer, there are moments that would be of interest to people following the story. You said calin rulli said Rebekah Vardy got in contact with her shortly after the post Coleen Rooney. She said, what is this . Coleen said, you know what it is. So i think we will get her side of the story. Calin rulli has not given any interview about her side of this and she told vogue recently everyone has been giving this side of the story apart from me. Coleen rooney. I think it will provide the definitive version of events from coleens side and giving a sense about what it is like to have your entire life picked apart on social media and everyone having their side of the story. She talks about the consequences on her Mental Health and i guess also how her life has changed from before the social media post where she is now. Its interesting because you say there were people fascinated by the court case and they will be equally fascinated to hear more about it. But on the issue of how horrible it is to have everyone picking apart your lives, you might think, just dont talk about it any more, but this is precisely the opposite, you are making a documentary about it. But also, i think it is a way to sort of find clarity about it. If it will be reported by the papers and the press, you would want your own version of events to come out. I think what is really interesting about this is how disney plus is the main backer. If the story had happened ten or 15 years ago, it would have been leading to a serialisation or used as interviews in a national newspaper, but the ones with the deep pockets are big streamers. I was speaking to an executive producer at the edinburgh tv festival and she said they had spoken to Coleen Rooney right before the actual story, before the High Court Case was even a possibility. So i think it is sometimes the case where the stars involved in the big claim, a big story want to give their own version of events because viewers, theirfans their own version of events because viewers, their fans are equally very much interested in it. I guess the main question is, if this is a story thatis main question is, if this is a story that is played out on social media in such a big way, what will it tell us that we dont already know before . That is what we are waiting to find out. With this three part documentary, it is all very much embargoed and the details are very much under wraps, so i think disney are hoping it will be blockbuster when it comes out, but it will remain to be seen whether it actually is. Remain to be seen whether it actually is remain to be seen whether it actuall is. , , actually is. We have got the Writers Strike going actually is. We have got the Writers Strike going on actually is. We have got the Writers Strike going on which actually is. We have got the Writers Strike going on which is actually is. We have got the Writers Strike going on which is probably i strike going on which is probably worth explaining. When you have stuff that doesnt need to be written, reality drama, it kind of helps with the streaming services. Exactly right. What we have had over the last six months is in america, the last six months is in america, the Writers Union representing many writers and the acting union being on strike. The writers returned to work quite recently. So it has meant a lot of dramas have been put on hold, not necessarily in the uk, but certainly from america. So there have been fewer coming down the pipeline. We have also had a massive rise of reality tv which i think would have happened anyway. If you were watching tv earlier in the week, you had the possibility at married at first sight, race across the world big brother at the same time. Survivor is on the way. Gladiators is coming back. It is a way for Public Service broadcasters i think to have a Competitive Edge against big streaming services because they are able to create big show is watched by many people at the same time and on streaming, you can always watch these shows by yourself. It is also the fact you can make them a lot cheaper at a time when production costs have been relatively higher. The challenge is for viewers including myself, trying to keep up with these programmes. It can be sometimes a bit of an uphill struggle. But certainly the view is if they like reality, this is certainly a good time for them. Indeed. Good to talk to you, scott brian, tv critic, thanks forjoining us.
