you're watching the context on bbc news. the republican party's search for a new house speaker continues, with steve scalise nominated then dropping out of the race all in a day. now it'sjim jordan's turn to try and win over the house. welcome back. alljournalists, cameramen and women know that they are putting themselves in grave danger, it's a risk we've all taken in conflict zones. and today we saw the horrible consequences of that — a videographer from the reuters news agency was killed earlier in the day in southern lebanon by an israeli rocket. the agency has confirmed the death and said that two of his colleagues have been injured, as well. reuters said it is deeply saddened by the death and they are urgently investigating with the israeli authorities to understand what happened. afp and aljazeera say the members of their staff who were in the same position were also injured and hospitalised in that same strike. i want to play you a clip from her international editor jeremy bowen from the last hour, 20 years ago the israeli army killed his friend. i asked him his friend. iasked him how difficult that experience had been. i was working with a lebanese cameraman, and a lebanese fixer driver named alabed... driver named the cameraman, and a lebanese fixer driver named the israelis opened fire from across the border and killed him. and they had a go at killing the cameraman and myself with a heavy machine gun, they didn't succeed but he was killed. yes, journalism especially in war zones can be a very dangerous job, and sometimes journalists are targeted, and sometimes they are in the wrong place at the wrong time. and what can i say? i'm full of sympathy for that family because i'll never forget the funeral, going back to beirut today after he was killed and going up to explain to his wife exactly he died. that was a pretty bad day. fix, his wife exactly he died. that was a pretty bad day-— pretty bad day. a very bad day and our sympathies — pretty bad day. a very bad day and our sympathies to _ pretty bad day. a very bad day and our sympathies to the _ pretty bad day. a very bad day and our sympathies to the entire - pretty bad day. a very bad day and l our sympathies to the entire reuters team this evening. anna, i want to talk to a separate issue, and that's the protests in france today. you might be aware that the french interior minister imposed a ban on pro—palestinian demonstrations, we've seen french police engaging with some of those protests. is there a difference for you between support for hamas and a protest in support for hamas and a protest in support of the wider palestinian cause? i support of the wider palestinian cause? ~ , * , ., cause? i think is we've seen on the french example, _ cause? i think is we've seen on the french example, and _ cause? i think is we've seen on the french example, and it's _ cause? i think is we've seen on thej french example, and it's important being replicated by the signals we are getting from the british government as well today, there is not currently much tolerance for people protesting with palestinian flags. i think what we saw in the uk was actual signs ofjubilation on the weekend after the attacks on israel, which of course made people externally concerned, particularly the jewish externally concerned, particularly thejewish community in the uk and thejewish community in the uk and the government and authorities, the please have a duty to protect those people and make them feel safe. three schools in britain, three jewish schools, reportedly had taken the decision not to open on security grounds. what's happening in france is slightly separate, they would have a long, historic... they have lived alongside each other, not particularly integrated, and of course i think as we saw the scenes from the streets yesterday of the police using tear gas, it only inflames these tensions and makes it deeper. inflames these tensions and makes it deeer. * ., , inflames these tensions and makes it deeer. ., , , deeper. apologies, your line is breakinu deeper. apologies, your line is breaking up — deeper. apologies, your line is breaking up a _ deeper. apologies, your line is breaking up a bit _ deeper. apologies, your line is breaking up a bit but _ deeper. apologies, your line is breaking up a bit but we - deeper. apologies, your line is breaking up a bit but we got i deeper. apologies, your line is i breaking up a bit but we got most deeper. apologies, your line is - breaking up a bit but we got most of that. chris, we've had a similar thing in the us, i've followed stories about protests and some of the top universities and colleges in america. how do you feel about people protesting the palestinian cause in close proximity to the jewish students? can't have a resolution on israel or condemn hamas, there's the ukraine funding, there is a spending bill they've got to get sorted in the run—up to thanksgiving. so there's an awful lot to do and not much confidence that this gets solved anytime soon. that's exactly right, the republican party, the house republicans certainly are being seen as a shambles, that it's so chaotic at the worst time possible. you mentioned there all these things that need to get past, like support for israel, that will get delayed. president biden has already sent through military assistance but if you want to send anything else, and he wants to keep sending things, to support israel, he needs congress to get out of the stalemate. there's no support for ukraine, that will get delayed, but also i can't member exactly how many days we are from potentially a government shutdown. so i think it's fair to say that it is a massive mess, and there's no guaranteejim jordan is a massive mess, and there's no your group together, and that's what's happening in the united states. we will ask chris in a minute whether he thinks the democrats will vote in the weeks ahead for a speaker, whether there might be a bipartisan candidate. but what sort of message does this send to america's allies any of crisis? it’s does this send to america's allies any of crisis?— does this send to america's allies any of we've talked in recent days about how this benefits russia, the world's attention slightly diverted from ukraine. i suppose there's no chance at the americans, french and uk will vote for a cease—fire active role in the middle east, in syria in particular in recent years, so i think it will definitely be keen to show that it's got a weight in the region, and of course the position itself — obviously at this moment there isn't any chance from the uk government, at the very least i've seen, that the position could change or would change, or that it would support such a resolution. so i imagine at the moment that is just a four show exercise because they know they wouldn't get the votes. in that sense, it's a really interesting strategy, isn't it? because of course they are aligned wembley for a friendly against australia, winning 1-0 friendly against australia, winning 1—0 thanks to 0llie watkins who scored the only goal of the match in the second half. australia wasted a good chance to level a bit later on when connor metcalf hit the post with a header, but england secured a morale boosting win before tuesday's euro 2024 qualifier with italy again at wembley. it's a big weekend at the rugby world cup, in france as the knockouts begin, with some exciting quarter final ties to look forward to. wales face argentina on saturday before the blockbuster showdown between ireland and new zealand. and a change for england, ahead of their tie. england have named captain 0wen farrell at fly half for their last eight tie against fiji, replacing george ford, who drops to the bench, while fellow fly—half marcus smith has been named at full back. freddie steward, england men's player of the year for the past two years, has been left out of the squad altogether. france will also have their captain back too. after suffering a fractured cheekbone earlier in the tournament in mid—september, antoine dupont is fit again and back at scrum half for their quarter final against south africa. dupont is yet to lose a match on home soil as captain. back home, bristol bears got the edge over leicester tigers, on the opening match of the premiership rugby season. they won 25—14 at ashton gate. bristol were 22—0 up at half time, but held off a leicester fightback in the second period, gabriel ibitoye with two tries, in a man of the match performance. dan kelly and hanro liebenberg helped salvage some pride, but a losing start the for their new leicester head coach, dan mckellar. new zealand cruised to an eight—wicket win against bangladesh to become the first team to make it three wins from three at the cricket world cup. batting first in chennai, bangladesh only managed 245—9 in 50 overs, despite mushfiqur rahim's 66. in response, skipper kane williamson was forced to retire hurt after getting struck on the thumb in his first match since recovering from knee surgery. but he and daryll mitchell put on a century stand, both hitting half—centuries, as the black caps won with more than seven overs to spare. all eyes will turn to ahmedabad on saturday, as arch—rivals india and pakistan face off at the narendra modi stadium. there is a capacity crowd of 132,000 expected, with both sides having won their first two matches in the tournament. we are under pressure because we are playing before a lot of time in a large crowd, in front of a big crowd, it is a mixed stadium. yes, the whole sport is wearing blue, so if pakistani fans are allowed, it will be good for us. aha, if pakistani fans are allowed, it will be good for us.— if pakistani fans are allowed, it will be good for us. a huge match there. former england test captain alastair cook has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. cook retired from test cricket five years ago, but did continue playing for another five seasons in the county championship for essex. the announcement brings to an end a 20—year career — and the batsman finishes as england's all time leading run scorer, having amassed more than 12,000 runs in 161 tests. the international olympic committee have recommended five new sports to be part of the los angeles olympics in 2028, which will now go to a vote. they include flag football, baseball and softball, squash, lacrosse and cricket — the last of which ioc president thomas bach says can help the olympics reach a new audience. it's a great opportunity to engage with a new athlete and fan community. we see the growing popularity of cricket, and in particular the t20 format. and now the world cup, huge success already, so we are looking forward to welcoming the world's best players in cricket to perform in the us. dina asher—smith has spent nearly two decades with the same coach, but announced today she's splitting withjohn blackie. the 200—metre world champion from four years ago, is joining up with the american edrick floreal ahead of next summer's 0lympics. that's just about it from us for now, you can get all the latest on the bbc sport website. but we will see you a bit later on. hello there, good evening. well, friday was another day of contrasts across the uk, with outbreaks of rain across much of the southern half of england and wales. still the mild air lingering here before the front cleared south—eastwards. further north, lots of blue sky and sunshine, and it felt deceptively chilly despite the sunshine, too. it was blustery with a brisk north—westerly wind. over the weekend, we're all coming into that colder—feeling air, so quite a dramatic drop in temperatures. still windy, but lots of autumn sunshine around, too. now, here's our cold front. it's clearing out into the near continent overnight tonight, taking the heavy rain with it. the mild air being swept away, replaced by all of this cold air pushing down from the north—west marked in the blue tones here. temperatures will be dropping below the seasonal average this time. so, tonight, then, lots of clear skies developing. the winds lightening towards the south. still some showers out towards the north and the west. the winds strengthening, though, across northern scotland. and this is how we'll start off saturday morning, on a much colder note, especially for england and wales, than we've been used to of late. on saturday morning, well, there'll be low pressure centred across scandinavia, some strong gusty winds out towards the aberdeenshire coast, possibly gales, even severe gales. also across the northern isles, too. elsewhere, a brisk north—westerly wind just blowing these showers further southwards and eastwards, even across southern england perhaps for a time, but most frequent for the north and the west. possibly wintry over the hills of scotland and of wales. the further east you are, the drier your day is likely to be. but there will be a lot of sunshine around, but it's not really helping to lift the temperatures too much, 8—14 celsius. it's going to be cold on saturday night into sunday. the winds will lighten. there'll be lots of clear skies around. there'll be a frost for many northern areas. i think temperatures here dropping below freezing, possibly even a ground frost for many rural spots in the southern half of the uk as well. so a cold, possibly a frosty start to the day on sunday. now, on sunday, there will be some more cloud across northern scotland and some showers here, so possibly a little milder. elsewhere dry, lots of sunshine. temperatures numerically will be lower on sunday, peaking only between 9—12 celsius, but because there won't be quite so much added wind chill and fewer showers, it will probably feel a little more pleasant. as we head into the start of next week, higher pressure builds in. it's dry and it's settled as you can see from our outlook for our capital cities. bye— bye. to leave their homes, so israeli forces can go in and clear out hamas. the response from the palestinian ambassador to the un, that this amounts to ethnic cleansing. a view shared in gaza. translation: our enemies are evil, our enemies are cowards, killing i children without any humanity. we have the remarkable story of the israeli woman, shot six times by hamas, but saved by her father. her message — all civilians, are the same. i want they be safe. i don't think they need to die, like i don't need to die. they're like me. and we're hearing that the israel defense forces are carrying localised raids into gaza, "gathering evidence", to help locate hostages. and the other main stories on tonight's programme...
