hello, i'm sarah campbell. in the last few hours, the israeli military has said that more than a million palestinians must leave the northern gaza strip within the next 2a hours ahead of an expected ground operation. a united nations spokesperson had this response... that statement has sparked an angry reaction from israel. the country's ambassador to the united nations said israel is trying to minimize harm to gazans. he went on to say that... anna a n na foster anna foster is near the israel and lebanon border. could you bring us right up—to—date with the situation where you are? this right up-to-date with the situation where you are?— where you are? this is a real point of tension — where you are? this is a real point of tension as _ where you are? this is a real point of tension as well _ where you are? this is a real point of tension as well as _ where you are? this is a real point of tension as well as the _ where you are? this is a real point of tension as well as the moment, i of tension as well as the moment, right on the far north on the border with lebanon. iran's foreign minister has been a deliberate and today talking to the leader of hezbollah hassan nasrallah because it is a concern now whether or not hezbollah, that powerful military and political group in lebanon like hamas, a proscribed terrorist organisation by the uk, us, other countries, whether they will decide to join this word in support of hamas in gaza and we are being particularly careful, not to give you too much of an idea about where exactly we are because you can see the military build—up here is beginning. this is a reserve unit who have been sent here to the north. we are very close to the border and they are here, they tell me they are on high alert because the problem is here, there are two things that could happen. there would either be a decision perhaps by hezbollah in lebanon to attack israel in support of hamas and in support of its palestinian allies were that regular firing that goes on across the border that has happened several times over the last few days where hezbollah were palestinian islamicjihad in lebanon have fired into israel and israel have fired into israel and israel have returned fire, there could be a misstep there, something could happen as it did in 2006 which could escalate things on this border and then you are looking at a war on a whole new scale, something isjust strolling in the whole of the middle east and could have an impact around the world. ~ ., , east and could have an impact around the world. ~ . , i. east and could have an impact around the world. ~ . , , , ., the world. what is your sense of the di - lomatic the world. what is your sense of the diplomatic efforts _ the world. what is your diplomatic efforts are huge. often it is a subtext, . happening? the diplomatic efforts are huge. often it is a subtext, it| are huge. often it is a subtext, it is not always explicitly said but it is not always explicitly said but it is always there under the surface so if you look for example at the us and obviously they have been enormously supportive of israel, they are israel's main military and diplomatic ally, they have sent warships into the eastern mediterranean. they have also sent fresh weaponry as well to help israel this week, to help the israel defense forces. at the time that was described as being part of the effort with the war against hamas but also they talked about additional scenarios and additional scenarios are right here. they are the northern border because that is something which causes huge concern. evenif something which causes huge concern. even if you look within the region, the other countries, races like egypt, qatar, saudi arabia, there is a lot of diplomatic effort going on at the moment because really nobody wants this war to spread to this northern it has been described at what would be a catastrophic escalation, it would be on a size and scale that would exceed what we are already seeing in gaza and it was something that would really inevitably draw in this region, the other neighbouring countries, the main powers, and that is why so much is being done diplomatically behind the scenes to try and keep things as calm as they can possibly be here in the north. ., ., , ., calm as they can possibly be here in the north. ., . , ., ., the north. you have been there for a few da s the north. you have been there for a few days now — the north. you have been there for a few days now and _ the north. you have been there for a few days now and i _ the north. you have been there for a few days now and i have _ the north. you have been there for a few days now and i have been - the north. you have been there for a few days now and i have been some l few days now and i have been some skirmishes over the few days and your point is there that the worry is there is an escalation or a miscalculation.— is there is an escalation or a miscalculation. that is exactly ri . ht. miscalculation. that is exactly right- we _ miscalculation. that is exactly right. we have _ miscalculation. that is exactly right. we have seen _ miscalculation. that is exactly right. we have seen anti-tanki right. we have seen anti—tank missiles fired from lebanon into israel, israeli response in the form of fighterjets israel, israeli response in the form of fighter jets targeting israel, israeli response in the form of fighterjets targeting hezbollah and palestinian islamicjihad and palestinian islamic jihad infrastructure and palestinian islamicjihad infrastructure in lebanon. we also saw an infiltration here in the northern border and one of the villages we were out a few days ago, one of the locals was showing me a video he had taken on his mobile phone where you could see and hear armed men, hearthe phone where you could see and hear armed men, hear the sound of them shooting and in that case several israeli soldiers including a very senior israeli soldier, a deputy but i in killed. these sorts of incidents at a normal time would be really significant, the sort of thing that we would be talking about but when we look at what is happening in the south they become a different strand of the story, but what is happening here is not to be underestimated. attention is nosy hype. people in some of these were the communities are actually packing up the communities are actually packing up and leaving. one winning was telling me this morning that on her local whatsapp microgrid they were having instructions to move away, to get out because nobody knows what would happen here particularly if there is a ground invasion into gaza. that is possibly the moment at which hezbollah might decide it needs to step forward and stand with hamas, with its palestinian allies, so we watch and we wait and these reservists here, there are a whole group of people from across the country, these are people who have done their time in the military who are living civilian lives now, but when the events of saturday happened they dropped everything and we came here, they are all reservists, then where to go, and they tell me they are waiting, ready to move, at a moment's notice on high alert while everybody watches that border which is really very close to us here. good to talk to you. let's go live to sderot in southern israel. lyse doucet is there. you have sent several days in ashkelon. we are getting reports this morning there have been rocket attacks into ashkelon. are you able to tell us where you are and what the latest is your hearing? aha, to tell us where you are and what the latest is your hearing?- the latest is your hearing? a fire truck will go _ the latest is your hearing? a fire truck latest is your hearing? a fire truck will go by so you will hearl the latest is your hearing? a fire | truck will go by so you will hear a little bit. you can see the streets are deserted. the streets we counsel you on the camera have been flooded with israeli soldiers. they are patrolling the streets and our mobile patrols about an hour ago, there were thunderous blasts here in sderot as rockets kept landing one after another. we heard the loud bangs of the air defence system, the iron dome. i and colleagues had to run to cover to one of the bomb shelters and had to move to a grocer location. shortly after there was a message on one of the social media channels of hamas's military brigades and they said they would be targeting this town of sderot in retaliation for the displacement of thousands, which we have been reporting have been under nonstop bombardment for many days stop —— of gazans. an hour before that we were in ashkelon a few miles away, the southernmost city, and there there was a deafening blast, the iron dome in action. styles landed there and hitting white packed residential areas. all of this morning we have seen an intensification of the rocket fire here into southern israel and of course it is friday and there was an expectation that there would be more to israel's acceleration of its attacks on the gaza strip. indie acceleration of its attacks on the gaza strip-— acceleration of its attacks on the gaza strip. we have been talking today about _ gaza strip. we have been talking today about the _ gaza strip. we have been talking today about the order _ gaza strip. we have been talking today about the order by - gaza strip. we have been talking today about the order by israel. gaza strip. we have been talking. today about the order by israel for something in a region of 1.1 million gazans to go to the south of the gazans to go to the south of the gaza strip. the arab league have just issued a statement saying the first transfer of the gals and population are as a crime. there has been a huge international response to this not least from ngos, the united nations, from oxfam, just an illustration of how tricky this conflict is becoming at the levels are so complex.— are so complex. israel's military command. _ are so complex. israel's military command. the _ are so complex. israel's military command, the top _ are so complex. israel's military command, the top politicians, l are so complex. israel's military i command, the top politicians, are under huge pressure trying to pull them in two directions. israel is categorical, after the shocking assault on its territory there will be an unprecedented response. we heard prime minister netanyahu repeating that yesterday when he met the us secretary of state antony blinken. but antony blinken was standing by israel's right to defend itself is saying that loudly and clearly in so many ways, he also raised concern about the civilians suffering, that is certain to result from these military operations and promoting israel although israel doesn't need to be reminded that evenin doesn't need to be reminded that even in war there are rules. this order which came very late in the night here that gazans in the north of the gaza strip should leave within 2a hours to the south of the gaza strip, was because they want to intensify their attacks on the underground tunnels being used by hamas both to shelter themselves and their fighters, hamas both to shelter themselves and theirfighters, to hamas both to shelter themselves and their fighters, to also their military and other provisions, that they know they will need or what is certain to be a long and very, very painful, dangerous escalation by israeli forces, but the place where to smash those tunnels it will also have to destroy the civilian homes and high—rises about it. that is why, mindful of this pressure, these calls from across the world, including by the un and other aid agencies not to target civilians, they are saying to gazans leave for your safety and protections. but the gazans have nowhere to go, the roads are broken, the houses are destroyed, the hospitals have babies and dainty bakers. there is the it and dainty bakers. there is the it and elderly and injured, people sleeping, taking shelter on the floors. even in the highly developed country it would be almost impossible to move more than a million people in this short a time. in gaza it would be a miracle and there are no miracle is now at this moment. ., ., there are no miracle is now at this moment. ., ,, , ., we are getting some news from france. reports of an attack at a school. it happened in the northern town of arras. one person has been killed, and two have been wounded in a knife attack. the attacker is reported to have been arrested. we are just bringing you that breaking news again. one person killed and two went it in a knife attack at a school in northern france. we will bring you any more we get on that as soon as we get it. around the world and across the uk. this is bbc news. let's look at some other stories making news. hundreds of afghans who risked their lives to work with the uk in afghanistan and fled the taliban are now stuck in neighbouring pakistan as they wait to be relocated to the uk. bbc news has learned some afghans are spending their lives living in fear — with pakistani officials beginning a crackdown on migrants without visas. the man who poured glitter over sir keir starmer, before his speech at the labour party conference, has apologised for making him feel unsafe. yaz ashmawi admitted he had "crossed the line" when he made physical contact with sir keir but said he did not regret his protest or his use of glitter. prince william has been awarded a special green blue peter badge in recognition of his work with the earthshot prize. the badge was awarded to the prince of wales as part of blue peter's 65th birthday celebrations. famous recipients of the green blue peter badge include sir david attenborough and greta thunberg. you're live with bbc news. let's go back to our main story. well, let's give you a sense of the geography in gaza. here's a map of israel where you can see gaza and the west bank marked. the israeli military is saying that everyone living in northern gaza should relocate to the southern end in the next 2a hours. that's more than a million people — about half the population of the entire gaza strip. nickjohnson has more. israeli air power continues to strike the gaza strip. buildings flattened in the blink of an eye. entire neighbourhoods reduced to rubble. israel says it's dropped 6,000 bombs on hamas targets in gaza over the past six days. with every fallen building, stories of human suffering. we're told this girl has lost all her immediate family. doctors say the entire health system here is close to breaking point. i think the whole medical sector and the health department maybe will collapse maybe in two or three days. i don't think that we can manage it. the hospital is full of patients. the israeli military has called for the entire population of northern gaza to relocate to the south within the next 2a hours. the un says this would involve the displacement of more than a million people and that such an undertaking would have devastating humanitarian consequences. israelis are still reeling from last saturday's attack by hamas. this video shows what remains of a kibbutz in southern israel. it was here where 75—year—old david moshe was killed by gunmen. his wife, adina, was kidnapped. their granddaughter anat describes that moment. they took us through the window. she's a 72—year—old woman. she's sick, she has heart issues. she watched her husband die right in front of her. and right after they got her on the motorcycle. and she had to hold the terrorist thatjust murdered her husband. they were together for over 50 years. us secretary of state antony blinken, seen here at an israeli donation centre, promised unending american support for israel following talks with prime minister benjamin netanyahu. he's due to meet the palestinian president mahmoud abbas later. the president of the european commission, ursula von der leyen, will also visit israel later today in what's been described as a show of solidarity with the victims of the hamas attacks. behind the politics, the people. in tel aviv, a vigil for those murdered. one candle for each victim. each day, bringing news of another life lost. nickjohnson, bbc news. so many upsetting and distressing stories coming out of gaza and israel. there are manyjournalists who are working there who are living there, in order to be able to share there, in order to be able to share the stories. what is it like to work in a warzone? adnan elbursh is a journalist who works for bbc arabic and this is what he witnessed on thursday. his story contains some upsetting scenes. my name is adnan elbursh, a reporter for bbc arabic and a resident of gaza. here in shifa hospital, bodies lay everywhere. the injured scream for help. you can never forget these sounds. among the dead and wounded my cameraman, mahmoud, has seen his friend malik. malik has managed to survive, but his family have not. this is my local hospital. inside are my friends, my neighbours. this is my community. today has been one of the most difficult days in my career. i have seen things i can never unsee. this young girl's home was destroyed. her relatives have been killed and she needs help. my daughter is the same age. i want to give her a hug. in the chaos, we try to understand what is going on. a mother sits next to the bodies of her family. we were sleeping and they bombarded our house like everyone else. we don't have any resistance fighters in our building. all the building is full of residents. 120 people lived there. the corridors of the hospital are filled with bodies. the morgue can no longer cope. the bodies of the dead have to be laid on the floor outside the hospital entrance. you never want to become the story, yet in my city, i feel helpless as the dead were given no dignity and the injured are left in pain. it is difficult to watch, isn't it? live now to james denselow, head of conflict and humanitarian advocacy at save the children. james, the stories that we are hearing from both gaza and israel are incredibly upsetting. can you tell me what you are hearing from save the children and what they are managing to do and how they are managing to do and how they are managing to do and how they are managing to help? it is managing to do and how they are managing to help?— managing to do and how they are managing to help? it is a terrifying time to be a _ managing to help? it is a to be a child in the region - time to be a child in the region whether you are sheltering under rocket fire on israel are trapped in the midst of this escalating violence in gaza. we are extremely worried by these orders to evacuate 1.1 million people out of northern gaza in the next 2a hours. the equivalent of evacuating the city of birmingham underfire in less than 11 hours' time now, so this is an impossible task for some incredibly vulnerable children. this is a children's crisis, over 500 children killed in gaza alone over the last less than a week. it really is a moment where cooler heads and adults need to prevail on the behalf of children. irate need to prevail on the behalf of children. ~ ., need to prevail on the behalf of children. ~ . ., ., children. we heard earlier from violence and we will be operating some of the hardest part of the world. ukraine, yemen, syria, afghanistan, mali and more but we can't operate in the context of this level of violence that that has been seen already, a number of aid workers killed as well. we need an urgent mechanism by which humanitarian aid can get into the people of gaza. i have just seen the news that bumrah has said they can no longer provide food and water for over 150,000 people in shelters, and we need to get people out especially children who have suffered serious injuries, often lost limbs, require specialist care, and they need to be as far away from the bombs as possible. as far away from the bombs as ossible. ., , ., , as far away from the bombs as ossible. . , ,, , ,, possible. that is the key issue, is no way out. that is right. i - think that sense of being entirely trapped is what makes this particular conflict so unique and difficult in a very densely populated part of the world that has half the population of children and then you imagine condensing that zone even further. i think the results would be pretty predictable for everyone and i think that is what worries us the most. there seems to be an inevitability as to a ground incursion into even more escalation on top of what we have seen already and it feels sometimes that week are reading the obituaries of children in gaza who are yet to die. ., u, of children in gaza who are yet to die. ., u, die. how can it save the children hel ? die. how can it save the children help? what _ die. how can it save the children help? what and in hospitals of gaza right now. there is a huge panoply of issues whether it is reuniting children who have been separated from their families, children who have been separated from theirfamilies, obviously children who have been separated from their families, obviously the need for clean water, food, shelter, people whose homes have been destroyed they have had to leave, i think there is a lot of work to be done around supporting children's mental health and psychosocial health under the bombs across all sorts sides of this conflict. we knew before the escalation that some four out of five children in gaza were showing signs of depression and other psychosocial issues and we can only imagine the levels of fear and terror they are feeling right now. save the children has been working in this area since 1953. how unprecedented do think the situation is that they currently expressing? i think we are now running out of adjectives to describe the humanitarian situation in gaza. there is a whole new quantum of suffering upon us and i think the response that we are planning for all eventualities, notjust in the direct region, i think there is a deep concern that the finance will spread to other parts of the middle east and that humanitarian response will accordingly have to be adjusted. let's not forget this comes at a time of record—breaking humanitarian need and numbers of people across the world who need humanitarian help and of course we are struggling to meet that. it is a crossroads and we can only hope and keep pushing for people with influence to try and take a step back from the spring.— influence to try and take a step back from the spring. let's return to that breaking news of an attack at school in france. it happened in the northern town of arras. the latest we have is one person killed and two wounded in the knife attack. the attacker is reported to have been arrested. according to police sources quoted by the afp news agency he shouted islamist slogans. that breaking news again. one person killed and two wounded in a knife attack at a school in northern france, including a teacher, we understand. stay with us here on bbc news. hello. our first chill of the autumn heading our way this weekend. some of you are already feeling it across parts of scotland and northern ireland today. the blue colours on this chart show where temperatures are below normal, reds are where they are significantly above, including southern parts of england and wales today. but notice into the weekend how the blues deepen for all of us. all of us will notice those temperatures drop. the colder conditions are waiting to the west of this area of low pressure. it's that and especially these weather fronts that have produced heavy rain so far today across parts of england and wales. it's shifting southwards through this afternoon. there will be some sunshine at times in the far south before that rain arrives. one or two heavy showers in the east of the english channel. it's quite windy here, but scotland, northern ireland, northern england, north wales, sunny spells this afternoon, but a blustery wind pushing in a few showers, especially in the north and west of scotland. the winds in northern scotland gusting 50mph, 60mph, maybe a little bit more later. that adds to the chill here. just nine or ten degrees in lerwick and stornoway, 22 towards east anglia and the south—east, where we'll see the rain push through during the second half of the evening rush hour before clearing. for the rest of the night, showers peppering northern and western coasts. those showers turning increasingly wintry across the north of scotland, but with some clear skies elsewhere. if you are sheltered from some strong winds, it will feel rather chilly. south—east scotland, north—east england maybe a bit of frost. the strongest winds are on the southern flank of this area of low pressure, to the north and north—east of scotland for saturday, but it will help to drive that colder air southwards to all the blue colours on the chart here. now, if we take took a look at saturday, we'll have frequent showers turning wintry across northern scotland. showers may be wintry in the west of england and wales on the tops of the highest hills, but most it's rain, maybe a little bit of hail. some of those showers pushing their way southwards and eastwards. but a good parts of southern and south—eastern scotland, eastern and southern england will stay dry on saturday. but, for all, seven to 13 celsius, it will feel colder, well down on what we've had for some through the week. with winds falling a bit lighter through saturday night into sunday, our first widespread rural frost on the grass for sunday morning, especially across the central and northern parts of the uk, but lots of sunshine. a crisp day to get an autumn walk in. still breezy down some eastern coasts. a bit more cloudy in northern scotland. the wintry showers turning more back to rain. isolated showers in the west to begin with, but mainly dry through the afternoon, but chilly — highs ofjust nine to 12 celsius. take care. cleared for takeover: britain's regulator changes its
