from gaza, stranded after the war, are getting help. and we'll have a special report from our security correspondent, explaining, step by step, how hamas planned and carried out their deadly attack. also on the programme... as the government vows to clamp down on vapes being marketed to children, we speak to a 12—year—old who suffered a collapsed lung and spent days in a coma after becoming addicted to vapes. and two weeks after this famous tree was felled, it's been removed from sycamore gap in northumberland where it had stood for 300 years. coming up on sportsday later in the hour on bbc news... we will be live in seville, where scotland can become the first team to qualify for next year's european championship. they need just point against spain. good evening. we are live in jerusalem where israel says it will not allowed basic resources or humanitarian aid into gaza until hamas releases the dozens of hostages it abducted last weekend. the group is designated as a terror organisation by many western government including the uk. america's top diplomat has assured israel of washington's unwavering support and says more us military assistance is on its way. secretary of state antony blinken was speaking in tel aviv after talks with prime minister benjamin netanyahu. the uk government has organised flights to fly british nationals out of israel, with the first flight set to leave tel aviv later on thursday, the foreign office said. tonight, we report from across the region. jeremy bowen has been to be*eri kibbutz in southern israel. we will be live in gala city and i have been to —— gaza city and i've been thirimanne in the west bank where thousands of people are stranded across that war —— during the war. some of the reports we will show you tonight will be distressing. we start with jeremy's report on this, the sixth day of the war. more of gaza has been flattened by israeli bombing. israel insists its targets are all based on intelligence, to kill the men who massacred israelis and to continue the job of breaking hamas. but hundreds of civilians of all ages have also been killed. and israel has been accused of answering the war crimes of hamas with ones of its own. anthony blinken, us secretary of state, flew in. he offered solidarity, more military aid and assurances for benjamin netanyahu, israel's prime minister. that america has israel's back. we are here, we are not going anywhere. he compared hamas to the killers of islamic state and said, "the way israel fights them matters." the value that we place on human life and human dignity, that's what makes us who we are. and we count them among our greatest strength. that's why it's so important to take every possible precaution to avoid harming civilians. at this police station in tel aviv, israelis report relatives who have been missing since hamas attacked. on the gaza border. yonatan*s mother disappeared from kibbutz be*eiri on the gaza border. his family believe that if peace diplomacy worked, the americans last tried ten years ago, israelis and palestinians might have been spared this agony. yonatan is here to give a dna sample, but he's hoping his mother is alive as a hostage. vivian silva, his mother, is one of israel's best known campaigners for peace with the palestinians. she was holding meetings only a few days before the hamas attacks. what do you think your mother would be saying about everything that is happening right now? that this is the outcome. this is the outcome of war, of not striving for peace. we've been, you know, israelis have, let's say, living under this. —— living on our soul. and this is what happens. you know, it's very overwhelming, but it's not completely surprising. we couldn't. .. it's not... ..sustainable to live in a state of war for so long. and now it bursts, it burst. vivian was making light of it at first last saturday, until she couldn't. "we may be witnessing a massacre. enough sense of humour, i'm just telling everybody, telling you i love you." and i write back, "i love you mum." she writes, "they're in the house now." i said i have no words, "i'm with you." she writes, "i feel you." and that was it, that's the last message. their kibbutz was one of the first targets of hamas last saturday, as it's right on the border. they shot dead the people in this car, stormed in and set about killing israelis. by the time the army fought its way back into be*iri, you can see the ferocity of the fight. it was too late to stop the massacre. the body bags of residents are still being brought out of the ruins. volunteers from an organisation that recoversjewish dead for a religious burial took us to the house where vivian silva lived, horrified by everything they've seen. it's not people. it cannot be people making something like that. it can't be! it doesn't go with people! there's not even a studio in hollywood that could make a horror movie as bad as what we have seen here. i can't understand, somebody take kids... they didn't just kill them, they mutilated, they burned, they... ..severed. it's impossible to describe. the army didn't allow us much time in the street where vivian silva lived and brought up herfamily. she moved here long before hamas emerged, for space and country air. we hope to find out more about what happened to her. but if there were clues, they were consumed by fire. vivian's house and her neighbour's were gutted. we don't know if she's alive or dead. herfamily, like her family, like so herfamily, like so many her family, like so many others, waits for news, good or bad. it's totally burned down. the remains of the house and destruction at the debates are evidence for most israelis that it is dangerously wrong for peace activists like vivian to argue that activists like vivian to argue that a century of attempted military solutions to the conflict have failed. the survivors have left the kibbutz. now it is a staging area as the army waits for the order to enter gaza. as the soldiers prepare, israel's government fails at this time, its forces will destroy hamas. jeremy bowen, bbc news. the continuing trauma on this side of the frontier. aid agencies are warning the humanitarian crisis inside gaza, is getting much worse, with food, water and medicine about to run out. the hospitals are being overwhelmed. more than 6,000 people have been injured in air strikes. but israel says its blockade on the gaza strip will continue until israeli hostages seized on saturday are freed. jon donnison reports. across gaza, whole neighbourhoods are being flattened. israel says these are precision strikes against hamas. for palestinians, it doesn't feel that way. and they are defiant. "i will never leave here", he says. "here i am, pulled from under the rubble." outside the main shifa hospital in gaza city, bodies are lined up. the health system is overwhelmed, short on medicines and running out of fuel to provide power. hospitals are also one of the few relatively safe places. in the grounds outside, the displaced are setting up makeshift camps. "we are sleeping here with the bombing above us," 15—year—old mohammed says. "i hope the world will have mercy." some of those here have lived through half a dozen wars. "they slaughtered our children, destroyed our houses over our heads and here we are in the streets," says 65—year—old taisir. "dead bodies are stacked over each other, children and toddlers," he goes on. in khan younis, in the south of gaza, they are burying the dead where they can. these funerals will not be the last. many more will grieve before this war is over. jon donnison, bbc news. 0ur correspondent rushdi abu alouf is in gaza, one of the very few journalists who is reporting from inside gaza. how long do you think people can hold out, with israel making it clear it is not going to allow vital supplies into gaza?— clear it is not going to allow vital supplies into gaza? well, already, half of the population _ supplies into gaza? well, already, half of the population are - supplies into gaza? well, already, half of the population are withoutl half of the population are without water. i have been to one of the largest neighbourhoods in gaza and most of the houses don't have running water. there was a big tanker provided by the united nations with clean water. people are queueing to fill up bottles. we are talking about life saving, i mean, life surviving material, water. electricity is cut everywhere, 100% of gaza is without electricity, exhibit very few people who have solar panels or generators but the situation is deteriorating quickly. people feel that the incursion is coming, hearing the israeli tanks engaging and firing and destroying one of the neighbourhoods today. and the way israel is cutting the neighbourhoods and making sort of buffer zone along the border, in part of the city near the sea, most of the people i met in the hospital, industry, in the supermarket today... in the hospital, it is not overwhelmed only by the people who are injured but by hundreds of people who are fleeing the fighting. i met over 2000 people in the shifa hospital, the main compound in gaza, that treats 90% of the people who were injured in recent days. the hospital were struggling to find water and food for those who have taken the hospital as a refugee because they believe it is safe. the doctors are struggling to deal with a number of casualties arriving to the hospital. they said they are only treating life saving injuries. i was talking to a woman in a wheelchair with a leg injury and she said she had been delayed for days to have surgery because they are treating what they call essential treatment. . ~ treating what they call essential treatment. ., ~ , ., ., ., treatment. 0k, thank you for that. sta safe. treatment. 0k, thank you for that. stay safe- our _ treatment. 0k, thank you for that. stay safe. our correspondent - treatment. 0k, thank you for that. stay safe. our correspondent live i stay safe. 0ur correspondent live from inside gaza. before the current conflict, people from gaza had been allowed to cross the border to work in israel using special permits. with the economy of the territory on its knees due to israel's blockade, around 21,000 people used to cross the frontier to work, earning far more than they could at home. now, after the hamas attack, many are stranded, unable to return to theirfamilies in gaza and not welcome here in israel. thousands are now being helped by palestinians in the other occupied territory, the west bank. it's hot... ..chaotic. .. ..and frustrating. this sports hall in the west bank city of ramallah is now a reception centre for hundreds of people from gaza left stranded by the war. a cigarette calms things down a little for mohammed. a chef by trade, he was working in tel aviv when hamas launched its attack last saturday, and he's been unable to return to his family in gaza ever since. now he's being moved to a new temporary home in the west bank. my family now is under attack, is under attack, and i cannot make contact with them now. he's not alone. on this bus are migrant workers from gaza, allowed into israel, but kicked out after the hamas attack and now taken in by fellow palestinians in the west bank. mohammed has a wife and four children he doesn't know when he will see again. you can't think of your family, of yourfather, you cannot. it's a bad situation. supplies arrive — food, blankets, water for some of those stranded away from home. and helping out is this woman and her niece, nihal. she was visiting her aunt from her home in gaza when the current war began, and now like so many others, she is stranded. pictures on her phone, memories of happier times, together with her family. 0urfear is that nihal can never be reunited with her children. they are young, and every day, my husband and they ask me, "you should return back to gaza. we want to hide under your arms. "you should be here with us." a happy family before the war in a home for which they used every penny of their savings to buy. this is the family home now. pressed shirts still hanging in the wardrobes. a satellite image from before the conflict shows the ramallah neighbourhood where they lived. a satellite image from before the conflict shows the neighbourhood where they lived. this image was taken two days ago after israel's bombing. with gaza's electricity running out, phone calls are difficult, and the last time nihal spoke with her children, they pleaded with her to come home. i haven't any words to say, just... "momma, you should turn back, i want you here with me." but... i shut my mouth and, "ok, i will try to reach you soon." talking to me about her family and her pain. in the last half an hour the uk government has announced it is sending two royal navy ships and aircraft to the eastern mediterranean to begin surveillance. let's go back tojeremy bowen and southern israel. what sort of message do you think is coming from the americans with the secretary of state flying into tel aviv today? wholehearted support, offers of more military aid, some sophisticated weapons. some people speculated about some kind of bunker busting bomb capability, but it was interesting that the secretary of state echoed the kind of sentiments that came last night from the presidentjoe biden where he said the us is 100% behind israel, we have got your back. but be careful how you fight this war because preserving civilian lives is all—important. that is also an international legality. don't forget the americans and western countries have been saying regarding the war in ukraine that the rules —based order, the international legality and what is important about that, and what is important about that, and that russia has violated it. they are not making a comparison, don't get me wrong here, but it is interesting they are trying to be quite consistent in the things they are saying. i think the israelis throughout are absolutely insisting, and the army was again this morning, that all the targets they select our intelligence base, that they go after hamas operatives. they also say that if palestinian civilians are suffering, and they are, it is the fault of hamas, they are the people to blame.— the fault of hamas, they are the people to blame. 0k, jeremy, thank ou for people to blame. 0k, jeremy, thank you for that — people to blame. 0k, jeremy, thank you for that. jeremy _ people to blame. 0k, jeremy, thank you for that. jeremy bowen - people to blame. 0k, jeremy, thank| you for that. jeremy bowen reporting live from southern israel. the uk is arranging flights to get stranded british nationals out of israel. the foreign office says the first plane will be leaving tel aviv sometime today, and more flights are planned in the coming days. meanwhile in london, two british people whose relatives are among those taken hostage by hamas in saturday's attack, have been speaking about their fears. my my mum was taken out, she was kind of disconnected from her oxygen in order to be loaded onto a motorbike order to be loaded onto a motorbike or whatever it is, i don't know. this is not about who is right and who is wrong. my father's country is fighting for peace.— fighting for peace. there is no olitics fighting for peace. there is no politics here. _ fighting for peace. there is no politics here. no _ fighting for peace. there is no politics here. no context, - fighting for peace. there is no politics here. no context, no | politics here. no context, no religion. _ politics here. no context, no religion, no race. simple humanity. the relatives— religion, no race. simple humanity. the relatives of some of the hostages that have been taken by hamas. this country is still in shock after last weekend's unprecedented attack, when members of hamas, designated as a terror group by countries including the uk, crossed the border from gaza, and committed mass murder. so how did they manage to carry out such a brazen operation, taking everyone by compelte surprise? 0ur security correspondent, gordon corera, has been investigating. gordon. the gaza strip is 25 miles long and israel had built what it called an iron wall around its perimeter. that included a high tech fence — its defences extend below ground to block tunnels — while above there were observation towers and surveillance cameras and sensors to detect movement. so just how did hamas manage to break out? it began early saturday morning with a volley of more than 2000 rockets launched out of gaza, sending israelis racing to their centres —— shelters. but that was just to provide cover for what else hamas was doing. commercial drones carrying explosives were flown to a security fence. these pictures are from hamas and we are using them to show how they carried out the attack. bbc verify has confirmed they are north of gaza. here we see one drone take out an unmanned gun emplacement. crucially, they knocked out communications towers and cameras, leaving israel blind. with rockets flying overhead hamas fighters flew out on a motorised hang gliders. you can see them circled in red. this is also north of gaza. at the same time, explosives were used to blow holes in the fence at some locations and at other places holes were cut. bulldozers then widen some of the gaps and there were dozens of preachers along the entire perimeter and disallowed motorbikes and vehicles to flood out. at least 1000 gun men were inside israel. they overwhelmed border checkpoints like this one at errors, adding to the chaos for israeli forces who were struggling to communicate and understand the scale of events. this complex attack would have taken months, perhaps years, or preparation. hamas has put out this propaganda video, claiming to show some of their training, although can't verify where it was filmed. the fact they managed to plan all of this without being spotted marks a significant intelligence failure. they even deceived israel into thinking they were not interested in another conflict right now. israeli troops arguably over reliant on technology that was now disabled, were thinly spread. here we see a tank taken out. its defences are failing to stop a direct hit. some gunmen headed to military bases. it was saturday morning and a religious holiday. israeli forces were taken by surprise, some soldiers killed in their barracks. this all meant gun men were able to head to other settlements nearby and carry out the killings at places like this kibbutz and music festival, meeting little resistance for hours. until the full picture of what was happening became clearer and more forces could be deployed. it would take days to regain full control of the gaza border. gordon career with analysis on how all of this in the current conflict began. that's all from us injerusalem for now. i'll be back at ten, but now, back to sophie in london. the health secretary, steve barclay, has vowed to clamp down on the way that vapes are being marketed to children, saying that colourful packaging and different flavours make them look like sweets. it comes as a senior doctor has warned that the increasing use of vapes among young people is becoming a public health emergency. one of his patients, 12—year—old sarah griffin, suffered a lung collapse and spent days in an induced coma after vaping heavily. 0ur health correspondent dominic hughes has been speaking to sarah and her mother. i'd vape before going to bed. the first thing i'd do is take a draw of my puff bar and i'd put it on my pillow and then go to sleep. like, a 600 puff wasn't even lasting me a full day, it was lasting three or four hours. in the end i was taking 4,000 puffs and they were lasting me about four days. sarah started vaping atjust nine. buying vapes from the local shops, by the age of 12, she had a serious habit. her nicotine addiction was that of a heavy smoker. her mum mary tried to stop sarah vaping but it was impossible. when she got to secondary school is when it really became... there are times i barely let her out at one point. i was cutting holes in my carpets in my bedroom to hide them in, like behind radiators and carpets and everything to hide them. i'd hide them everywhere. even inside teddy bears i'd find them. it sounds like a proper addiction, right? it sounds like you were properly addicted. like, hiding stuff. yeah, the doctors actually asked me when sarah woke up did they think she might need a nicotine patch? addicted to vaping and asthmatic, last month sarah was rushed to hospital with breathing difficulties. she ended up being put into a coma after her lung collapsed. you know, the minute your child is going to icu that is not good. we didn't know if they were going to come back and tell us sarah if was dead or not. there is absolutely no words to describe when you think your child is going to die. one of the doctors who helped treat sarah says poorly controlled asthma, colds and vaping all combined to leave her on the brink. i think you could describe that as the perfect storm, a lot of risk factors going into the wrong direction. so to what extent should we all be concerned about the use of vapes amongst very young children? i think this is a public health emergency. we should all be concerned with the increasing use of vapes because it is clear that this is an evolving problem. the health care problems associated with vape are only emerging. vaping can help hardened smokers quit, but mary says parents need to be aware ofjust how many children are now vaping. people need to open their eyes because this is happening all around and possibly to your child too. no matter what you are thinking, like, people think their kids aren't doing these things, but the reality is very, very different. what would you say to other young people your age who are thinking about vaping or who are already vaping? don't start doing it because once you start doing it you don't stop doing it. you only stop when you basically, you have to, it's a life or death situation. dominic hughes, bbc news, belfast. a scottish national party mp has defected to the conservative party. lisa cameron says she's left the snp because of what she called "toxic and bullying" treatment from party colleagues. the prime minister rishi sunak has welcomed dr cameron to the party. the snp leader humza yousaf called on her to step down to allow a by—election. it's two weeks since this sycamore in northumberland was felled in what police have called a deliberate act of vandalism. today a crane was brought in to remove it from hadrian's wall. it's being taken to a safe place until a decision has been made about what to do with it. we are going to leave you with this insight into what it is like to work insight into what it is like to work in a war zone. this is what the bbc arabicjournalist in a war zone. this is what the bbc arabic journalist witness today. this story contains some upsetting scenes. mi; this story contains some upsetting scenes. ~ , ., , this story contains some upsetting scenes. g ., , ~ ., ., this story contains some upsetting scenes. 3 ., , ~ ., ., ., scenes. my name is adnan, i am a re orter scenes. my name is adnan, i am a reporter for _ scenes. my name is adnan, i am a reporter for bbc _ scenes. my name is adnan, i am a reporter for bbc arabic _ scenes. my name is adnan, i am a reporter for bbc arabic and - scenes. my name is adnan, i am a reporter for bbc arabic and a - reporter for bbc arabic and a resident of gaza. initially bodies lay everywhere. you can neverforget the sounds. among the dead and wounded, my cameraman mahmoud has seen his friend malik. malik has managed to survive, but his family have not. this is my local hospital. inside are my friends, my neighbours. this is my community. today has been one of the most difficult days in my career. i have seen things i can never not see. this young girl's home was destroyed. her relatives have been killed and she needs help. my daughter is the same age. i want to give her a hug. daughter is the same age. i want to give hera hug. in the daughter is the same age. i want to give her a hug. in the corridors we try to understand what is going on. a mother sits next to the bodies of her family. a mother sits next to the bodies of her family-— a mother sits next to the bodies of her famil . * ,, . ~ her family. translation: we were slee - in: her family. translation: we were sleeping and _ her family. translation: we were sleeping and they — her family. translation: we were sleeping and they bombarded - her family. translation: we were sleeping and they bombarded our . sleeping and they bombarded our house _ sleeping and they bombarded our house like everyone else. we don't have any— house like everyone else. we don't have any resistance fighters in our building — have any resistance fighters in our building. all the building is full of residents, 120 people live there. the corridors of the hospital are filled with bodies. the morgue can no longer cope. the bodies of the dead have to be laid on the floor outside the hospital entrance. you never want to become the story, yet in my city i feel helpless as the dead were given no dignity and the injured are left in pain. bbc news, gaza. , ., , ., gaza. scenes there from inside gaza from ourjournalist _ gaza. scenes there from inside gaza from ourjournalist from _ gaza. scenes there from inside gaza from ourjournalist from bbc - gaza. scenes there from inside gaza from ourjournalist from bbc arabic. time for a look at the weather, here's tomasz schafernaker.

from gaza, stranded after the war, are getting help. and we'll have a special report from our security correspondent, explaining, step by step, how hamas planned and carried out their deadly attack. also on the programme... as the government vows to clamp down on vapes being marketed to children, we speak to a 12—year—old who suffered a collapsed lung and spent days in a coma after becoming addicted to vapes. and two weeks after this famous tree was felled, it's been removed from sycamore gap in northumberland where it had stood for 300 years. coming up on sportsday later in the hour on bbc news... we will be live in seville, where scotland can become the first team to qualify for next year's european championship. they need just point against spain. good evening. we are live in jerusalem where israel says it will not allowed basic resources or humanitarian aid into gaza until hamas releases the dozens of hostages it abducted last weekend. the group is designated as a terror organisation by many western government including the uk. america's top diplomat has assured israel of washington's unwavering support and says more us military assistance is on its way. secretary of state antony blinken was speaking in tel aviv after talks with prime minister benjamin netanyahu. the uk government has organised flights to fly british nationals out of israel, with the first flight set to leave tel aviv later on thursday, the foreign office said. tonight, we report from across the region. jeremy bowen has been to be*eri kibbutz in southern israel. we will be live in gala city and i have been to —— gaza city and i've been thirimanne in the west bank where thousands of people are stranded across that war —— during the war. some of the reports we will show you tonight will be distressing. we start with jeremy's report on this, the sixth day of the war. more of gaza has been flattened by israeli bombing. israel insists its targets are all based on intelligence, to kill the men who massacred israelis and to continue the job of breaking hamas. but hundreds of civilians of all ages have also been killed. and israel has been accused of answering the war crimes of hamas with ones of its own. anthony blinken, us secretary of state, flew in. he offered solidarity, more military aid and assurances for benjamin netanyahu, israel's prime minister. that america has israel's back. we are here, we are not going anywhere. he compared hamas to the killers of islamic state and said, "the way israel fights them matters." the value that we place on human life and human dignity, that's what makes us who we are. and we count them among our greatest strength. that's why it's so important to take every possible precaution to avoid harming civilians. at this police station in tel aviv, israelis report relatives who have been missing since hamas attacked. on the gaza border. yonatan*s mother disappeared from kibbutz be*eiri on the gaza border. his family believe that if peace diplomacy worked, the americans last tried ten years ago, israelis and palestinians might have been spared this agony. yonatan is here to give a dna sample, but he's hoping his mother is alive as a hostage. vivian silva, his mother, is one of israel's best known campaigners for peace with the palestinians. she was holding meetings only a few days before the hamas attacks. what do you think your mother would be saying about everything that is happening right now? that this is the outcome. this is the outcome of war, of not striving for peace. we've been, you know, israelis have, let's say, living under this.
