hello and welcome. i'm sarah campbell. america's top diplomat, antony blinken, has arrived in israel in the past hour, as the us and other nations try to prevent a wider conflict erupting in the middle east. there's also growing diplomatic pressure to get essential supplies into gaza — which has been sealed off after hamas — launched attacks into israel. here are some of the latest developments. the united nations says more than 338,000 people have now been forced to flee their homes in gaza — and food, fuel and water are urgently needed. ahead of a possible incursion into gaza, the israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, has established a national emergency unity government with opposition leader, benny gantz. israel has continued its mobilisation of troops. hundreds of thousands are on the southern boundary with gaza. president biden says he's told mr netanyahu that israel must abide by the rules of war, in its fight against hamas. all this as israeli air strikes on gaza continue. the palestinian health ministry said at least 51 people died overnight. in the past hour, israeli media has said the number of those killed since hamas*s brutal attacks on saturday has risen to at least 1,300. this is the scene live in gaza — where in the past few hours the health ministry has confirmed that 1,200 palestinians have been killed in retaliatory israeli air strikes since saturday. a similar number of people in israel are now thought to have been killed in the multiple assaults by hamas at the weekend. the israeli military says that figure includes at least 220 soldiers. 0ur correspondent nick beake reports now from tel aviv. israel says hundreds of thousands of its troops are gathering outside gaza and warns they'll soon be moving into the hamas controlled territory as part of its response to the atrocities committed on israeli soil. alongside this show of military force, a war cabinet has been formed. translation: citizens of israel. this evening we have established a national emergency government. the people of israel are united and today its government is united. we are fighting a cruel enemy, worse than isis. in washington, president biden pledged unwavering support for israel. americans are among the up to 150 hostages feared to have been taken into gaza and among those killed in hamas*s assault. this attack was a campaign of pure cruelty. notjust hate but pure cruelty against the jewish people. and i would argue it's the deadliest day forjews since the holocaust. the deadliest day since the holocaust. this is what gaza looked like in the early hours of this morning. plunged into darkness after its only power station shut down. israel has cut off electricity supplies to these densely populated palestinian communities. many are now in ruins after being bombarded by israeli air strikes over the past five days. the un says essential supplies of food, fuel and water must be allowed to reach civilians. translation: we left our homes thinking that we would _ return in an hour. we left our belongings, money, food and everything we owned. now there are 50 people in the house without food, drink, water or electricity. i do not know how we'll provide food for our children. i'm searching here under the rubble for the remains of lentils and rice, even a little for my children. israel says hamas's attacks justified this response, that this is an act of self—defence. but israel is accused of breaking international law, killing hundreds of civilians in an act of revenge. this is the latest footage released by the israeli military showing their bombardment of gaza. they say it will continue until hamas is wiped off the face of the earth. as the calls become even more urgent for aid to be allowed in and for civilians to be given a way out. nick beake, bbc news, tel aviv. we heard from israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, in nick's report. well, joining his war cabinet is the main opposition leader and mr netanyahu's long—time rival, benny gantz, after agreeing to form an emergency unity government to manage the war with hamas. at a news conference, mr gantz, who's a former army commander, said the move sent a strong message. translation: our standing - here together shoulder to shoulder is a message to our enemies, and most importantly a message to all citizens of israel. we are all together, we're all soldiers. there is a time for war and a time for peace. now is a time for war. bbc verify is continuing to monitor the impact of israeli air strikes in gaza, several videos released by the israel defence force have shown their attacks, one was on top islamic university of gaza targeted between the 10th and 11th october. if we look at this. this is a satellite image of what the university looked like before the strike. bbc verify matched the buildings distinctive shapes to know that this image was taken after the strike. israel says hamas was using the university as a training camp for weapons development and military intelligence, that is a claim we haven't been able to independently confirm. these images show the area before the strikes, and this is a satellite image of the same neighbourhood, which came through yesterday, and has been located by our colleagues, at bbc verify. well, let us go live to gaza and our correspondent there. we can see smoke rising behind you, clear evidence that those air strikes continue.— clear evidence that those air strikes continue. , , , strikes continue. yes, yes indeed. over night — strikes continue. yes, yes indeed. over night there _ strikes continue. yes, yes indeed. over night there was _ strikes continue. yes, yes indeed. over night there was more - strikes continue. yes, yes indeed. over night there was more were in a referee gee camp. located near the beach, and they said israeli air strike destroyed two houses and many civilians were killed. some videos and picture on social media showing kids being dragged from under the rubble. i was passed by the hospital this morning, a queue of long ambulances are waiting to deliver the casualties to the emergency room where hospitals are overwhelmed by the number of people injured, more than 6500 people are injured since saturday, hospitalare than 6500 people are injured since saturday, hospital are appealing for people to donate blood. they said we are running out of essential medical equipment and they said we are running out of fuel. israel cut the electricity on saturday, and the only power station that was providing a bit of power for the essential services has been stopped yesterday, due to the fuel shortages, and caused severe disruption to the water network, to gaza, so most of the houses, they don't have water in their house, i was passing by a street where hundreds of people were gathered around a tank, water tank and people were queueing to fill their bottles. talking to those people, what the most they are worried now is the news of israeli bringing tanks near the borderfor a possible ground ofration, people left this experience back in 2014 when hamas and israel were fighting street to street and house to house in several locations across, near the border, and thousands of people were killed, hundreds of houses were destroyed, so the people they knew what's the meaning of having israeli tanks in a densely populated refugee camp and densely populated refugee camp and densely populated refugee camp and densely populated neighbourhoods, and what the fight could be. we can —— have been hearing there are no options for people essentially, to go to safety, we have been hearing of hospital, people in their thousands turning up at hospitals hoping to be safe there. what is the sense among the people you are talking to, about what they can do and where they can go? what they can do and where they can i o? ., ., ., go? yeah, i have within to the hos - ital go? yeah, i have within to the hospital yesterday, surprised by a number of people taking the hospital as a shelter. 300,000 people are already in the un schools and this is over the university they are unable to accommodate any more people. people decide to go to the hospital because they have nowhere to go. they are in every corner you will find a family in the ground, sitting, sleeping in the ground, they belief the hospital is safe. when you ask anyone, where you go? they say we have no place to go in gaza city, the only place to go in gaza city, the only place to go is the un institutions and the un schools, and they are overwhelmed. they have more than the capacity of these place, we are not talking about shelters, we are talking about school that are turned into a temporary shelters for people, and, since the crossing is closed, everyone the un couldn't bring food and water and some essential help to those who are taking shelters in the un schools so the situation is deteriorating in a very fast way, and we are expecting more to come. thank you so much for bringing us up—to—date there. now ins a delong hit by hamas rockets at the weekend there have been fresh at tae tacks in the past 24 hours, and israeli forces have been passing through ashkelon as they move towards border with gaza. live now to our chief international correspondent lyse doucet who's on the outskirts of ashkelon. we spoke to you yesterday and you were talking about the build up of troops and that appears to be continuing. yes, we were allowed to go closer to the closed military zone yesterday, about three—and—a—half miles from gaza, and about a mile from where we are today, but there were so many rockets being fired by hamas, into that area, israel's iron dome was in action for hours to try to intercept them. israel's much vaunted air defence system. we have had to push back, but even from here we can see there is a constant stream, this road is quiet now, but a on stand stream of huge lorries, white, unmarked. heading to the front, no doubt taking provision, supplies to the soldiers, and as we have been reporting have been massing along the border, armour is getting into place this is a highly complex and risky operation, and they have been working on it, since those horrific first hours of saturday morning when israel was caught off guard by hamas, to use the word, unprecedented assault. now israel knows it has got to show, it has to do the business of keeping its own citizens safe. would you mind staying with us, we are going to bring in some pictures from jerusalem where the israeli president is just giving a press briefing. let us have a listen. fields of — briefing. let us have a listen. fields of employment, bringing, breaking bread, bringing money back home, you could have seen economic growth in gaza, international investments went in through the international community, mostly un and other agencies to supply the necessary infrastructure for gaza. there was no reason at all, for this flaring up which ended in the worst tragedy that was ever inflicted on the state of israel, the highest number ofjew since the holocaust, including survivors, went through the worst arossty in history. i will read you a quote from a volunteer, from an ngo that identifies bodies, and deals with what can we call last mercy of respect. respect. he appeared yesterday on israeli tv and he said, a road that takes ten minutes to drive every day, took us 11 hours. dozens of vehicles, all along the road, some upside down, some burned and in every vehicle, there were lifeless people. murdered in cold blood. they, the hamas threw grenades into the vehicle, blew them up grenades into the vehicle, blew them up after they murdered the people inside. we found a lot of murdered people in the ditches, on the side of the road, who were trying to escape, and they shot them and they fell into the ditches. 0ne escape, and they shot them and they fell into the ditches. one of my own advisors, was mobilised to remove bodies, i spoke to him last night. he found a family of five. tied together, hugging each other, shot and burned. nothing can speak more than anything than this tragedy. i was wondering what they played before they were all shot together. mother, father, children, babies. the injuries that were found on the bodies of the killed, the people, the removing team, the rescue teams i met in the last two days found signs of torture on the bodies like anything they have ever seen in their life, and some of them are for decades dealing with pains of war and terror. the kibbutz has a unique story, as you know, 10% of the kibbutz was killed. lost their lives. it was one of the most popular places for people to move to wards that region and find new homes but there is a unique name, the nickname of the founder of the labour movement in israel. he was a philosopher, and a leader, who was the partner in establishing the labour movement, and his nickname when he wrote articles, it was a beautiful kibbutz, epitomising a socialist communal life of huge success, huge magnitude and so are so many of the other kibbutz. i found a spirit yesterday, enormous spirit of human beings in the shetland her. the kibbutz has been attacked again and again, for years has suffered thousands of missiles, we were telling the world every time in every round, that this is impossible and the world kept on repeating the slogan, disproportionate israeli response. look at the quotes from world community leaders or world leaders and foreign officer, disproportionate response. every time this havoc was inflicted on these villages and towns and we were told disproportionate response. i am asking myself whether the international community and the international community and the international media is now understanding what a false interpretation. studio: and we are going to leave, thatis studio: and we are going to leave, that is the israeli president taking a press briefing there injerusalem. let us go back to lyse. we heard there, from the president, the sense of anger saying the highest number of anger saying the highest number ofjews killed since the holocaust, i guess the question is what is that israeli response going to be? yes. israeli response going to be? yes, the president _ israeli response going to be? yes the president addressing not israeli response going to be? i2: the president addressing notjust the president addressing notjust the journalists but speaking to israeli, speaking to the world which is watching this so closely, he has been deeply involved in israeli politics, in times of war, in timeles of peace, he holds the office of the president, which is a largely symbolic role but in a very very divided israel, before this crisis erupted he was seen as a unifying figure, who was quite popular, that is a huge achievement, and so you heard him talking about the pain and suffering of israeli civilians, he mentioned a town not far from where we r it has always been on the front line. i remember at each gaza crisis, it used to be there used to be small crude rockets would be fired, from the gaza strip, they, there would be a hole in the wall, a bit of damage but the residents would talk about their fear, and of course it seems so small compared to the intense bombardment being carried out by israel on the gaza strip, but here we are in 2023, and the kind of capabilities and determination of hamas, the people of the town, of ashkelon where we are, in kibbutzes in the southern area, along the gaza strip have suffered in ways that were unthinkable, they have never seen before, hence the anger in israel, and the determination, the hardening of views that this time they have to respond differently, but that will be dangerous and costly and people will suffer. thank ou. the awes fist for national statistics said there was strong growth in services off set by falls in manufacturing and construction, in manufacturing and construction, in contrast, some sectors fared poorly, such as arts, entertainment and recreation. people across the uk are being asked for their views on plans to reduce the number of teenagers and children using e—cigarette, government proposals include banning certain flavour, restrictions on single use vapes and making them more expensive. the scottish and welsh governments have already said they are opposed to single use vapes. a crane will remove the trunk of the world famous sycamore gap tree from hadrians recall, two weeks after it was chopped down by vandals, the national trust is asking people to stay away because of the complexity of the task, the trunk will be kept at a safe location until a decision is made about its future. you are live with bbc news, thank you forjoining us, back to our top story and the israeli military has said no decision has been made yet on any ground incursion into gaza but they are preparing for it. jeremy bowen has this update on the troop build up. a warning his report contains details and images some might find distressing and upsetting. in the fields and farm tonnes border wire israel's come bad soldiers are creating jumping off points to invade gaza. at this kibbutz regular unites and some of more than 300,000 mobilised reservists were preparing for the order to move in that most israelis believe will come. the build up than we are seeing here is the clearest evidence i have witnessed that israel is preparing for the a grounds operation, in gaza, and if you have add this to the formation of a war cabinet, you can see the direction they must be going in. israel's allies are gathering. antony blinken, the us secretary of state is flying in from washington. american support includes weapons, and moving an aircraft have got the weather front draped across england and wales today, producing cloud, and also some patchy light rain and drizzle. a lot of this will ease, to the north, a lot of dry weather, sunshine, but blustery showers coming in across the north and west, with the winds strengthening and later too, we will see heavier rain coming into the south—west. these are temperatures, 10—17 north to south. potentially 20 in the channel islands. through the rest of the afternoon and into the evening we have this heavy rain crossing england and wales with strengthening winds, a weak weather front will introduce more cloud and patchy rain so not as cold a start to the day as this morning, still mild in the south. as we head through the day tomorrow, what you will find is this weather front is pushing further north, this is heading further south and eventually the two will meet. and we are looking at a pretty wet day, we will see some large rainfall totals in a short amount of time, showers clearing the far south—east in the morning and still a windy day, particularly in the north, the winds easing through the day, as we push further south. still temporarily mild in the far south, but that will change, because as this weather front clears the rain away, it opens the door for all of us, to a northerly or a north—westerly wind, and that is represented by the blues in the chart, indicating the drop in temperature. so we will see temperatures more likely we would expect in autumn but for some it will be below average, so in summary this weekend, we are looking at chilly days and cold nights with frost, sunny spells, a few showers, we will see some snow on the tops of the hills and mountains in scotland. so on saturday itself, very windy across the north, with showers blowing in on that north—westerly wind, for most o it will be dry, a fair bit of sunshine, but temperatures are down, eight to 13 degrees being the maximum north to south. and then as we head on into sunday, there will be fewer showers but a bit more cloud in the north—west and once again, with lighter winds, north—west and once again, with lighterwinds, it north—west and once again, with lighter winds, it is still going to antony blinken has arrived in tel aviv, us secretary of state, in a display of solidarity with israel. bombardment of the gaza strip has left 340 thousand palestinians antony blinken — has arrived in israel. he'll meet israeli officials and express us solidarity with israel though he's also expected to urge restraint to protect palestinian civilians. he'll also meet forjoining us today, so much to ask you about. let's start with the visit from antony blinken, us top diplomat, what will he be hoping to achieve in this visit? clearly the visit as a demonstration of 100% american support for israel in this time of great tragedy. and he will be offering israel every military and intelligence support that the united states can muster. but i think in private there will probably be two additional private messages, one is around humanitarian relief, may be setting up, encouraging israel to help some sort of humanitarian corridors allowing some humanitarian relief to go into gaza because what israelis are doing in terms of their total siege is highly questionable in terms of international law. although he would be trying to dissuade israel from a ground offensive against gaza, i do not think that would be possible, i think that is inevitable it will happen, but he will be urging them to do so in as proportionate and measured away as possible. because we are entering a very dangerous phase now and the way this ground invasion is conducted will make the difference between this remaining and israel— gaza conflict or becoming a wider regional conflict. perhaps we could explore that further tomorrow he is due to meet the palestinian president mahmoud abbas. ~ : : , the palestinian president mahmoud abbas. ~ : , the palestinian president the way they conduct the military operation, thousands of palestinian civilians killed, it is highly likely the west bank will become inflamed and first may will get militarily involved. in your role in the united nations, the united nations are due to hold an emergency meeting to address the situation in the gaza strip. clearly diplomatic efforts notjust from antony blinken and the us but the global community know very much focusing on this part of the world. yes, unfortunately i do not think the un security council meeting is going to actually make much difference on the ground because the security council is heavily divided with american thought mike russia, china, uae, braziland others with american thought mike russia, china, uae, brazil and others having a balanced, more gaza effectively with nowhere to go. in terms of escalation, the possibilities are huge, aren't they? they are, i think israel faces a delicate path to tread now because i am not convinced that the objectives set out by prime minister benjamin netanyahu, destroy hamas as a force for good is an organisation, is achievable without accompanying diplomatic or political moves. the difference is not only will be ground invasion not achieve that stated objective, it will enable hamas to achieve its objective, which was in the horrendous attack of the weekend, of course they wanted to kill lots of israelis, take hostages, sent terror across the country, but there was also a wider objective, which was to keep palestinian issue at the centre of attention in the region and more globally at a time when israel's arab neighbours appear to be losing interest in the palestinian cause and making peace with israel. the last straw if you are a palestinian militant is saudi arabia, when they went down that path. what we have already seen, this situation could escalate in the next few days, if the military operation by israel gets, is seen to be disproportionate, is that saudi arabia, already backing away from making peace with israel, and indeed has been a first—ever we think contact between the crown prince of saudi arabia and the iranian president, but also some of those arab states that have started having diplomatic links with israel might become more cautious. that is exactly what hamas would like to see happen. 5ir exactly what hamas would like to see ha en. ,, a ,, exactly israel says it's acted in response to four days of rocket attacks by iran—backed hezbollah. iran's foreign minister hossein amirabdollahian is due to arrive in lebanon to discuss the israel—gaza war. for more now on the situation in the region we can speak to our middle east correspondent, lina sinjab, who's in beirut. the latest? it has been a worrying few days with rockets fired on both sides, certainly as we hear it started from lebanon and the israelis responded, leaving three members of his brother were it killed. his brother we have to remind our audience that in 2006 because of similar situations there was a month—long war on lebanon by the israelis because of rockets fired from lebanon into israel that left the country crippled, this is a country already struggling from years, drowning in poverty, the last thing lebanon needs is a war with israel. everyone is speculating that hezbollah will not take this action... we saw over the past few days rockets fired from here. it is el—nakla says her mother and father, who have been trapped in gaza since the hamas attack on israel, are "terrified" about what might happen next. nadia el—nakla says her mother and father, who have been trapped in gaza since the hamas attack on israel, are "terrified" about what might happen next. she*s been speaking to our scotland editor, james cook. nadia el—nakla says her mother and father, who have been trapped for nadia el—nakla, just talking to herfamily is getting harder and harder. her parents are in gaza visiting her brother, who is a hospital doctor there. they have been there for the past week, visiting my gran, my brother and his family. they are now caught up in a war situation. my mum says that there*s continual bombardment from land, sea, air. they are terrified. she is terrified. she hasn*t slept since monday. she feels that every part of her body is aching. we've no electricity, we've no water. the food we do have, which is little, will not last. i have four grandchildren in this home. a two—month—old baby, a four—year—old. and today, two nine—year—old twins, their birthday. i ask the world to help. my newest nephew is weeks old, and every time the bombs go off his arms just flail in fear, and you know, i fear that his little heart can*t take that continual bombardment, and yeah, they are just terrified. what is the foreign office saying to you? they said they are trying to get them out through rafa, but israel*s just declared it*s now a secure military zone, the gaza strip, which means nothing can get in and out. this is ms el—nakla*s aunt and uncle observing the damage to their home. her husband, scotland*s first minister, is calling for a ceasefire and safe passage for those who want to leave gaza. i completely understand israel*s right to protect its citizens from terror, just as any country would do. but the collective punishment of 2.2 million people, the vast majority of whom are innocent civilians, simply can*t be justified. nadia el—nakla says this video shows her cousin*s home in ruins. her brother mohammed says the hospital he works in is hell on earth. the nurse lost two, two of her kids. at work and suddenly went to the er and found both...sons dead in front of his eyes. that*s awful. you couldn*t imagine this suffering. what would you say to the international community, and i suppose, specifically, to the israeli government, which is in a position where it says it*s trying to avenge the horrific deaths of hundreds of its citizens and is trying to track down the people responsible? there is a quote i recently heard, that if you do an eye for an eye the world goes blind, and war brings out the worst of human beings, and i am sadly seeing, we are seeing the worst of human beings in this whole conflict. returning live tojerusalem, these are pictures from one of the many funerals which have been taking place. the israeli media says the number of those killed since the attacks on saturday has for advance ticket sales. 0ur north america correspondent, peter bowes, was at the premiere: welcome to the eras tour. the phenomenon that is taylor swift. a cultural touchstone. music*s biggest name and soon to be queen of the box office. this shopping mall was completely closed down to stage the red carpet premiere. security was intense. as was the level of excitement amongst the swifties who were lucky enough to get a ticket. i*m just like overwhelmed right now, i*m like shaking a little bit. a little bit anxious, my stomach hurts, but in the best way possible. listening to her music and reminding me that having a bad reputation can't make you afraid to talk. i really mean it, she means that much to me. this is what the swifties have been waiting for. the red carpet entrance to the cinema with taylor swift waiting inside to screen for the first time her new movie. up until the last minute, the premiere was shrouded in secrecy. taylor swift*s eventual entrance, more than any of her fans had dared to hope for. the film has already broken records with more than $100 million in ticket sales well before opening night. it*s the classic taylor effect. she is not only a successful artist with a huge global following, she is also a very smart businesswoman. she*s created what i would call a new genre of spectacular shows. the gen—zs who have spending power are now spending. so the impact on the economy is enormous. the economicjuggernaut that rolls into town when taylor swift is performing is infectious. there is a tangible benefit for local businesses on a scale that*s never been seen before. the success of the tour is largely down to the music, and an intensely loyalfan base. welcome to the acoustic set. the film which runs for almost three hours could easily become the biggest grossing movie of 2023. watch out, barbie. and as her fans know all too well, taylor mania could go on forever. peter bowes, bbc news, los angeles. some breaking news, crown court. the weather with carol. as we go through the next couple of days, the weather is changing. for many of us it will turn that bit colder than it has been. we have got the weather front draped across england and wales today, producing cloud, and also some patchy light rain and drizzle. a lot of this will ease through the day. to the north, a lot of dry weather, a fair bit of sunshine, but blustery showers coming in across the north and west, with the winds strengthening here later, and later too, we will see some heavier rain coming into the south—west. these are our temperatures, 10—17 north to south. potentially 20 in the channel islands. through the rest of the afternoon and into the evening and overnight we have this heavy rain crossing england and wales, with strengthening winds. at the same time, a weak weather front crossing scotland and northern ireland will introduce more cloud and patchy rain, so not as cold a start to the day as this morning. still mild in the south. as we head through the day tomorrow, what you will find is this weather front is pushing further north. this one is heading further south and eventually the two will meet. and we are looking at a pretty wet day. we will see some large rainfall totals in a short amount of time. showers clearing the far south—east in the morning and still a windy day, particularly in the north, the winds easing through the day, as we push further south. still temporarily mild in the far south, but that will change, because as this weather front clears the rain away, it opens the door for all of us to a northerly or a north—westerly wind, and that is represented by the blues in the chart, indicating the drop in temperature. so we will see temperatures more likely what we would expect in autumn, but for some they will be below average for this time of year. so in summary this weekend, we are looking at chilly days and cold nights, with some frost. sunny spells, a few showers — we will even see some snow on the tops of the hills and mountains in scotland. so on saturday itself, very windy across the north, with showers blowing in on that north—westerly wind. for most it will be dry, with a fair bit of sunshine, but temperatures are down — eight to 13 degrees being the maximum north to south. and then as we head on into sunday, there will be fewer showers, but still a bit more cloud in the north—west, and once again, with lighter winds, it is still going to feel cool. this is bbc news. us secretary of state antony blinken has arrived in a show of solidarity with israel. he
