in early september, mahsajina amini, a 22—year—old woman, and her younger brother travelled from saqqez, a kurdish city in western iran, to visit the capital city, tehran, for the first time. but theirjourney takes an ominous turn. as soon as they get out of the metro station, mahsa faces two morality police, a force tasked with enforcing strict islamic dress code on women in public. mahsa's clothes are deemed revealing. mahsa is detained and taken to a police station in tehran. an hour later, mahsa complains about something to a female police officer. this cctv footage shows the moment she collapses in the police station. by the time she is transferred to a hospital she is brain—dead and falls into a coma. roya piraei and her mother, mino majidi, in the city of kermanshah in western iran, are anxiously following mahsa's news. three days later, mahsa was pronounced dead. the news of her death outraged many across the country. sanaz karimiazar was a preschool art teacher in saqqez, the hometown of mahsa jina amini. chanting through her picture and videos, sanaz played a pivotal role in documenting the day mahsa was laid to rest. on the day mahsa was buried the slogan "women, life, freedom", and the very words inscribed on mahsa's tombstone, would go on to resonate as rallying cries for protesters challenging the regime from within and beyond iranian borders. tv: since the death of the - young iranian kurdish woman... ..women have been at the forefront of this... ..filming themselves cutting off their hairl and burning hijabs. go on tiktok... many mothers and grandmothers stood alongside their daughters. the four decades of anger against the strict islamic rules on women expressed through the fists and voices of young girls. three days after the death of mahsa, the kurdish region in western iran was the epicentre of the protests. protesters planned a rally in nubehar intersection in the city of kermanshah. without telling her daughter, mino majidi, a 62—year—old mother of three, leaves home and joins the protest. in 1979, during iran's islamic revolution, mino majidi wasjust 18 years old. she told her daughters how the newly established islamic regime enforced strict islamic rules on the lives of women. in 1981, mino majidi graduated from college and embarked on a teaching career, but her teaching career in an elementary school was short—lived. during the iranian cultural revolution she was deemed as an anti—islamic revolutionary. consequently she was fired from herjob. on the eve of september 29, the anti—riot police, alongside militias loyal to iran's supreme leader, shoots demonstrators in kermanshah. a middle—aged woman hit by shotgun pellets multiple times falls on the ground. she's rushed to hospital, blood seeping. roya and her father were worried by her mother's unusual absence. shouting in this video we see mino majidi, roya's mother, laying on the ground, people trying to help her. there is blood on herface. protesters don't know she has been hit multiple times by birdshot pellets from behind. she was bleeding, but mino majidi, on her way to hospital, died. to identify her body, roya's father and aunt make their way to the hospital morgue. earlier that year mino majidi visited her other daughter, mahsa, and her granddaughters in england. the day after mino majidi was killed, mahsa hears the news in england. the day after mino majidi was killed, mahsa hears the news in england. she wants immediately to go to iran. worried about the possibility of arrest and a potential false orforced confession, she takes precautions by recording a video. this way if she is arrested, the video could be made public. chanting mino majidi was the first mother killed during the protests. a day before mahsa gets home, they lay her mother to rest. the autopsy report reveals that mino majidi suffered wounds from 167 birdshot pellets. in the past few months, hundreds of iranian protesters have escaped iran and through illegal routes found refuge in neighbouring countries, and some of them managed to go to europe. i am on my way to meet a man who has defected iranian security forces and has found refuge here in germany. eight years ago omid morady joined the iran police academy. there he underwent rigorous training as a special forces soldier before being stationed in tehran. when the protests erupted last year, omid attempted to liberate a female protester, who was held by militias. he was arrested himself and subjected to brutal beatings. in last year's protests, over 550 protesters were killed, including 68 children and 49 women. after her mother's death, roya remained in a state of shock for days, unable to find solace in even a single tear. but this symbolic act, on the seventh day of her mother's passing, attracted the attention of millions, both within and beyond iranian borders. one of roya's friends republished her private picture on social media. in minutes, it went viral. her family feared the security forces might arrest her. roya leaves her university, herfamily and hometown behind and escapes to turkey. by the time roya arrives in turkey, in the peak of the protests in iran, emmanuel macron, the french president, in a symbolic move, wants to meet iranian women activists. ladan boroumand's father, a political activist, met a tragic end in 1991, when he was brutally assassinated by iranian agents in paris. shima babaei's father is also a former political prisoner, who disappeared two years ago, while in custody in iran. two days before meeting the french president, the french embassy in turkey, in 2a hours, issues a visiting visa for roya to travel to france. i'm the daughter of mino majidi. roya's symbolic act attracts the attention of angelina jolie, hollywood superstar and humanitarian activist. the interview with roya, penned by angelina jolie, was published in time magazine. you are so inspiring and brave and articulate. thank you. and it is such an honour to be sitting with you. thank you. i should thank you, it's an honour for me as well. thanks. cheering. i bear witness that the islamic republic's revolutionary guard is not a normal military force. the irrg is one of the wealthiest, most dangerous organisations for crime, spreading terror and fundamentalism in the world. the irrg aims to spread terror... mahsajina amini paid the ultimate price for the simple act of letting a few strands of her hair free. today in iran, despite the constant threats of harassment, intimidation and arrest, many young women continue to defy the compulsory hijab, the hijab that has been one of the pillars of the islamic republic of iran. i remember this picture went viral. many people talked about the bravery of that woman walking by the police officer, in defiance without headscarf, something mahsajina amini was killed for, just showing a few of her hairs. but now i know it was you doing that. you have a child. were you not afraid you might be arrested? you know those people who have been arrested. we have heard horrible stories about torture and even rape in prison. hello. some fresh, autumn weather on the way. chilly, even, for some of us in northern parts of the uk, but certainly nothing out of the ordinary. it's been so mild across many parts of the country so far this month. so we're back to really where we should be, this time of the year. so this is what's happening on thursday. this is the air mass, the temperature of the atmosphere. so, still some warmth and humidity across the south. in fact, temporarily, thursday into friday, we'll see a resurgence of that warmth, as the wind direction changes temporarily from the southwest. but then, come saturday and sunday, it's a northerly, and that autumn chill arrives, a touch of frost across northern areas by night, even a little bit of wintriness across the scottish hills. so let's have a look at the forecast, then, through the early hours, really quite cloudy and wet across some southern parts of the uk, but to the north of that, it's generally clear and chilly. in the glens of scotland, temperatures barely above freezing, but most of our northern towns and cities, around three to four degrees celsius. in the south, on the south coast, it's still really quite mild, sort of remnants of that warmth leftover, but a lot of cloud during the day, little dribs and drabs of rain, and then, i think, across much of yorkshire, northern ireland, the bulk of scotland, a bright, if not sunny, day, just scattered, fairweather clouds, 13, 1a, still 18 in the south. but then, come the evening, widespread heavy rain sweeps into many parts of england and wales, a really wet thursday night into friday, a really complicated weather map here. on the one hand, we have a weather front coming in, a low pressure from the south, then we've got a cold front coming in from the north. you can just about see it, here. so i think, for a time, wet in the morning on friday, temporarily, that warmth, it literally clips the southeast, with temperatures up to 20 in london, 19 in norwich, but the colder autumn air arrives in scotland, northern ireland and northern england, as well. so it's a northerly, temporarily a northerly, but then, into next week, high pressure builds, and we're right in the middle in the centre of this area of high pressure, so that means the winds will be generally light, there'll be a lot of sunshine around, so it's going to feel very, very pleasant indeed, i think, a lot of crisp autumn sunshine on the way. that's it from me. bye— bye. live from washington, this is bbc news. israel's military build—up gathers pace, ahead of an expected ground invasion of gaza. new satellite images of a gaza neighbourhood show the before—and—after impact of the israeli air strikes. and, the us secretary of state is en route to the region, as president biden speaks about efforts to bring us hostages home. hello, i'm caitriona perry. you're very welcome. there have been growing calls for a humanitarian corridor into gaza, as the un says over 300,000 people in the territory have been forced to leave their homes. overnight, we've seen flashes over the skies of gaza, as israel continues to carry out air strikes, saying it is targeting hamas fighters, not civilians. but air strikes have hit civilians ,
