about 15 in the south at this time of the year, 13 in the north, around average for the time of year in this autumn chill. thanks, tomasz. time now for the news where hello, i'm 0lly foster. here's what coming up on sporstday: pitch perfect — if scotland keep their unbeaten run going in spain tomorrow night, they will be the first team through to euro 202a. wayne rooney back in the english game — he's the new manager at birmingham city. ireland are unchanged for the all blacks. we'll look ahead to the rugby world cup quarterfinals. when we were kids we didn't dream of ireland winning the world cup. we have put ourselves in a position now to go and do that. also coming up on sportsday: rohit sharma shines for india as the hosts make it two wins out of two at the cricket world cup. the first wave of team gb athletes have been named for the olympics. we'll hearfrom some of the sailing squad. good evening. we've got the cricket and rugby world cup coming up, but for scotland, all their focus is on the european championship in germany next year. they are so close after a brilliant campaign so far in qualifying. they have beaten everyone in their group, five wins out of five, and if they can return from spain with at least a point tomorrow evening they will become the first side to qualify for next year's tournament in germany. let's speak to jane dougall, who is in seville ahead of that match. jane, i hope they bottled something from that magical hampden night in march when they beat the spanish. it's going to be a tough one tomorrow night. it absolutely will be. spain have not lost a home euro qualifier since 2003, plus, as you mention, there will be out for our revenge after that 2-0 will be out for our revenge after that 2—0 defeat at hampden in march. how draw in seville with two gears,*s place in germany with a couple of group games to spare. that is quite an unusual situation for scotland to find themselves in. even if scotland lose to spain tomorrow night, they can still qualify if norway failed to beat cyprus in larnaca, also being played tomorrow night at the same time. on sunday, norway host spain, and if they don't beat spain, then scotland are going to the euros for a second successive time. so plenty of opportunities. it is not something that scottish fans are used to! the capacity of the stadium is 60000 and scotland only have 3800 allocation, but i'm sure they will make up for that shortage of fans with a lot of noise. we spoke to some scotland fans who were lucky enough to get tickets and they were fairly realistic about what might happen and what the score might happen and what the score might be tomorrow. we have been in the tartan army for, what, _ we have been in the tartan army for, what. 23 _ we have been believe! we hope you will get the glorious job that sees us through. i don't expect the victory. a scotland fan never expects a victory, however a draw would be well received. we have a draw would be well received. - have been following them since 2003 and this is the best we have seen them play recently. it and this is the best we have seen them play recently.— them play recently. it could be a spain were them play recently. it could be a - famous knights, jane. spain were not famous knights, jane. spain were not best impressed with that match at hampden. there could be a bit of needle in the game tomorrow night. i seem to remember some pretty disparaging comments from rodri after that defeat at hampden. he called steve clarke's side rubbish and set the style of play is not football. as you could imagine, that didn't go down incredibly well with the home side at hampden. the assistant manager of scotland spoke about that on monday and said he had been agitated by the disrespectful comments and he believed it wasjust sour grapes after he said scotland won the game fair and square. manager steve clarke are scheduled to be talking to the media round about now and undoubtedly he will be asked about that and i doubt very much that he will say that it has affected the scotland players, but it probably will be in the back of their minds to try to prove a point. at the same time, they only need a point in order to qualify. the only time that scotland have qualified in back—to—back euros was in 1992 and 1996. andy roxburgh was manager in 1992 and in 1996 it was craig brown who was in charge. tomorrow night, scotland could be on the brink of those successive back—to—back qualifications. it would be the first time that scotland had ever automatically qualified for a major tournament for 25 years. maw; tournament for 25 years. many thanks. that — tournament for 25 years. many thanks. that news _ tournament for 25 years. many thanks. that news conferences running a tonight, though, they are playing at wrexham's racecourse ground for the first time in four years. expect a few senior debuts for the friendly against gibraltar, including the great—nephew of wales great ian rush, 0wen beck. he is someone i look up to, to have a career like that at club and international level. it is great inspiration for me. it is someone i can look up to think, well, he's done it so that is exactly what i want to do. when we speak over the phone and release them in person, whatever advice he gives to me, it means a lot because it is coming from the best. harry maguire has revealed that he got a call from david beckham after being jeered by scotland fans last month. the england centre—back scored an own goal after coming on as a substitute in the 3—1 friendly win in glasgow. maguire made a rare start for manchester united's last weekend, but has been a mainstay in manager gareth southgate's squad. he's also involved for friday's friendly with australia and next week's euro qualifier against italy at wembley. beckham is the subject of a recent documentary, part of which chronicles the abuse he suffered after he was sent off during the 1998 world cup. about three weeks ago, after the scotland game, he got in touch with me. it was really nice of him and i really appreciated that. throughout my career, david beckham is someone who i looked up to and watched as a young boy. he reminded me of the career i have had to date, the big moments i have had in my career, what i have reached in terms of being captain of the biggest club in the world for 3.5 years. he has been in that position and he knows what it is like. i watched the documentary and i couldn't believe how much he went through at the time. wayne rooney is back in the english game. he's the new manager at championship side birmingham city. the former manchester united and england striker has been coaching in the mls, but stepped down at dc united over the weekend after they failed to reach the play—offs. 0ur correspondent nesta mcgregor is here. nesta, he's been linked with the job at st andrews for a couple of months, but how has this gone down, because it's not as if the club was in massive trouble? no, it's not very often that 11 games into and you sizing —— new season and with the team occupying a play—off spot they let the manager go. apparently the owners and john justice didn't share the same footballing philosophy. wayne rooney comes in, decorated player. apparently, he is the man after a 13 year gap from the premier league, he is the want to take them back there. they said they wanted somebody who would adopt and implement and no fear approach to football. this is theirjob in management. there must be some excitement around the club because he is one of credit, despite the turmoil of administration and relegation. darby was his first managerialjob. he was playing at the club at the time before taking over as full—time coach. they were bottom of the table when he took over. they only managed to stay up on the last day of the season, a dramatic 3—3 draw with sheffield wednesday. the following season, more turmoil, more trouble, they were deducted 12 points after going into administration and they never really recovered on the field. rooney resigned for the club before the start of the new season. bring back to birmingham city, they have fairly new owners in an american consortium, including american quarterback tom brady, who has been posting how excited he is to have wayne rooney at the reins. they will want to make the club more attractive globally. wayne rooney is one of the biggest names in football, can be bad for brand awareness but he will still be judged for the results on the pitch. they always are. thank you. luton town have given the former crystal palace and england winger andros townsend a short term contract untiljanuary. townsend, who is 32, had been close to joining burnley. he was out of contract and didn't play at all for everton last season because of a serious knee injury. he joins luton with the club 17th in the table. there are eight more games in the women's champions league this evening. the winners in this qualifying round will reach the group stages. glasgow city are at home for the first leg of their tie against norweigian club brann. three results already today — first leg wins for roma, benfica and rosengaard. english clubs are in league cup action tonight. you can see all of those fixtures on the bbc sport website. football clubs have been asked to sign up to a new sustainable travel charter. the aim is to try and get them to drastically cut down on flying. in one two—month period, premier league sides took 81 individual domestic flights to 100 games. so far, just six clubs in the football league have pledged their support. the climate change charity pledgeball is one of the groups behind the charter and i spoke to their chief executive, katie cross. a lot of the time at the moment it seems very normalfor a lot of the time at the moment it seems very normal for clubs to choose to fly to fixtures, and fixtures that are not far away. not only does that have a direct environmental impact, but that then makes it seem that considerations around flying are fairly lights and that we should just do that, it normalises slang. that isn't something that we can continue to do. we can't assume that we can automatically fly. what this charter does is it allows clubs to use a kind of flow chart that then takes into the account the fixture scheduling, the time it would take to travel there by rail or by coach, and then guides them to the most appropriate option at this time. the aim being that it is more ambitious, it makes clubs consider it and it reduces the number of flights they take within a season. it will take every club to get on—board with this because if a couple of clubs are doing it, other clubs will say that's they will have to do it as well because if they get some games out a line, time to recover. he will have to get all the clubs on board, won't you? hate have to get all the clubs on board, won't you?— have to get all the scots. we will have more on that story on tomorrow night's sportsday. that's all from sportsday. goodbye. hello there. hello. for some of us over the last few days, it has felt as if summer has been trying to cling on deep into october. but autumn is going to be arriving over the next few days. in fact, already feeling quite autumnal in the northern half of the uk. here some sunshine, but some rather cool air working its way in from the north—west. conversely, south—westerly winds bringing warm and muggy air down towards the south, and the dividing line between those air masses is this weather front bringing some outbreaks of rain across parts of wales, the midlands, into east anglia and lincolnshire. particularly heavy rain i think across parts of west wales with the risk of some flooding and some disruption. to the south of that, often quite murky but warm and humid. further north, something cooler and fresher. 12 degrees, for example, in aberdeen and glasgow, some sunshine, scattering of showers, the wind slowly easing a little bit in the north of scotland. now, overnight, ourweatherfront moves a little bit further southwards and then tends to stall across southern counties of england, parts of wales and the midlands, very mild here, 16 degrees in plymouth overnight. compare that with two or three degrees for many spots further north. but here we will see some sunshine to take us into tomorrow morning. a scattering of showers, particularly in the north—west of scotland. this band of cloud never really clearing the south of england or south wales. we could see some pockets of rain and drizzle at times. some warmth trying to cling on here, but for most a cooler feel. 17 degrees there for london, 13 for belfast, 12 degrees in glasgow. but instead of clearing through, that weather front actually tries to push northwards again during thursday night into friday, looking very wet for parts of england and wales. at the same time, this cold front pushes its way into scotland and northern ireland. so quite a complex look to the weather chart on friday, but we will see some outbreaks of rain, particularly across england and wales. but across
