israel and gaza where there has been another night of missile launchers and air raids across the border. the prospect of an israeli ground invasion appears to be drawing closer. here are the latest developments. israel says that more than 1200 israelis are now known to have been killed since hamas launched attacks. more than 900 people have been killed in gaza by israel cosmic bombardment. israel has sealed all crossings into gaza the only crossing into gaza the only crossing into egypt has been hit by israeli airstrikes. a week of total collapse. both sides have accused the other of war crimes. the palestinian representative of the united nations said israel was planning to use starvation as a method of warfare. israel has accused hummus of torturing and murdering babies and children in attacks which began on a saturday. israel took over territory that had been overrun by hamas gunmen on saturday. 0n by hamas gunmen on saturday. on tuesday morning israel says more than time, and i know that we will be very aggressive and very strong, but we keep our value. we are israeli, we arejewish, and war is a very difficult thing, a little problem, people can stay in the battlefield, you can see what is happening here. the israeli military has now sealed all israeli borders with gaza and the rafah crossing, which leads from gaza into egypt, has been hit by israeli air strikes. an egyptian human rights group said that led to the crossing being closed, but officials have not confirmed that. israel has launched several thousand air strikes against gaza, saying it is targeting only hamas. these pictures show how the missiles and bombs have destroyed entire districts. getting in and out of gaza is almost impossible, but the bbc has a rare insight into the situation on the ground, with our correspondent, rushdi abu alouf. he's lived there his entire life, and while it's just too dangerous for him to be reporting live, he has sent us this update. very quickly, if we can see the scale of destruction in this neighbourhood. it's called rimal neighbourhood. it's the economic hub for gaza that has been completely targeted yesterday. many buildings were destroyed. behind me is the 11—storey building that was knocked down two days ago, but the destruction in this area has been targeted quite recently, last night. israel has said they carried out 200 air strikes, targeting the hamas infrastructure. in fact, they hit many buildings, government buildings, belonging to the hamas—run authority, but look to the scale of destruction in the area and how civilian homes were completely affected and some of them were completely destroyed. translation: i lost everything. my house, my shop has been destroyed completely. where do we go? we have become homeless. this gentleman just told us we have to leave the area, because it seems the israelis are warning residents of the areas that they should leave, they are going to target another building in the area. but look at the scale of destruction. this is happening overnight, with israelis targeting houses, shops, ministries, mosques, everything. the whole neighbourhood was levelled to zero. this is one of the most important economic hubs for gaza, where, as you can see, most of the shops were damaged, houses were damaged, the infrastructure, the street. this is the street that leads to the southern part of the city. it's completely blocked. israel has called up 300,000 reservists to join its frontline troops. tanks and other heavy military equipment are massing near gaza, some has also been deployed to the northern border with lebanon where there have been exchanges of gunfire across the border. the un has called for the laws of war to be upheld, which would include the release of hostages, and the protection of civilians. with me is said shehata from bbc arabic. what more can you tell us in the latest developments? the developments _ the latest developments? tue: developments with gaza. hamas gunmen arrived in force and killed at least 260 people there. the attackers then continued their rampage into the surrounding villages. 0ur middle east correspondent lucy williamson has been to the area around re'im to hear the testimony of people there who saw and heard the violence unfold. another warning — you may find some of her report distressing. the road that led to an open—air party now an open—air crime scene. the path of hamas gunmen mapped by their weapons and their bodies. their target — a festival site where hundreds died. the ground zero of this multipronged attack. among the dead, the passengers of this car, gunned down as they fled. bodies and debris still line the route into this festival site. police have told us this vehicle was used by hamas militants. you can still see the ground here is covered with the remains of weapons, the uniforms they used. days on from this attack, families all across this area are still trying to trace exactly what happened to their loved ones. four members of one family are listed among the hostages kidnapped by militants. among them, his nephews, 12 and 16 years old. the boys phoned their mother as gunmen took them from a nearby house. and then they said they hear someone breaking into the door and walking in the house. about ten minutes later, i heard people speaking in arabic outside the door. the door opened and i could hear my youngest say, "don't take me, i'm too young!" that was the last i heard from them. those barbarians took kids out of their houses and out of their beds and just kidnapped them. they are keeping them hostage. theirfather and his girlfriend are also missing. this video appears to show them in the hands of militants. but the waiting is killing us. i can see my mum broken. that's the hardest part for me. i can be strong, i can lift up all my family, but it's hard to see my mum breaking. as israel continues to pound targets in gaza, hamas has threatened to begin executing hostages in response. with every strike, some see the face of israel's military might. ranana sees the faces of her children. lucy williamson, bbc news, southern israel. around the world and across the ukm this is bbc news. let's look at other stories. the labour leader sir keir starmer used his speech to his party's conference to promise a building programme which would make owning a house far more affordable. his speech was disrupted as he took to the stage by a protester who was later arrested. sir keir took off his jacket and outlined how his plans for the uk. it is time to build homes across the country. an opportunity. new development corporations with the power to remove the blockages. infrastructure to support families to grow. whether good jobs, whether website —just click through at bbc.co.uk/news black we will be taking a look at this with reaction from those in business. you're alive with bbc news. alongside the fighting in gaza and israel, a war of words is being fought by diplomats. israel's defence minister has said his country is battling *beastly people'. the palestinian representative at the united nations said israel was dehumanising the people of gaza — and acting in a genocidal way. president biden used a speech on tuesday to outline how the us is firmly on the side of israel — describing the attack by hamas as *an act of sheer evil.* gfx ff)but — in a phone call with israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu, the white house says he stressed the need to distinguish between terrorists and innocent civilians. mr biden is sending his top diplomat, secretary of state antony blinken, to israel later this week. live now to washington and our north america correspondent, shingai nyoka. president biden's speech was very supportive of israel, but are there any limits to what he will accept israel doing? in his actual speech, if there are limits, he did not spell them out explicitly. while not publicly anyway. his speech was incredibly emotional when he referred to hamas as pure and unadulterated evil and reiterated what is that all along, that the united states stands with israel. but he also said that israel has the right and duty to defend itself against hamas, essentially giving them a blank sheet, a blank space to be able to do what they want and need to to be able to put hamas down but what we have been hearing, as you mentioned there, is that the united states, that president biden has been speaking privately to benjamin netanyahu, where he has urged restraint and expressed concern about the fate of the civilians and what he said publicly in his address was that israel is like the us and it respects the rules of war, as well as international law but there are concerns expressed by the united nations as well as the european union that this will not happen and the fate of 2 million palestinians is at risk even as israel escalates it's offensive. i don't think many will expect to hear criticism of the us as israel escalates against hamas. it is a hallmark of all the violence in israel and gaza, that youngsters and children have been victims. the bbc knows of many young people who were kidnapped by hamas. the images of boys and girls, and babies in their mothers arms being led away, are some of the most harrowing of this war so far. caroline hawley has that story. imagine that you know and love these children, all now hostages in gaza, and the wait, the absence of news, is torture. this is 30—year—old israeli mother shiri, on saturday morning in the hands of her captors. still in her arms, her nine—month—old baby, kfir, and her four—year—old, ariel. they were kidnapped from their kibbutz near the border with gaza. theirfather, her husband, yarden, was also taken. i really hope that she is ok, i really hope that they didn't separate the kids from her. the babies were torn out from their bed at 6am on saturday morning, on holiday, in israel. they were asleep in their beds. my feeling is that my family is over there, i don't know how they treat them and i know there is a nine—month baby that is without his food and diapers. these are pictures of more children held hostage, shared with danish television by their mother, maayan. they are her eight—year—old and 15—year—old girls, and she had this message for them. translation: i will do anything. we will do anything to get you back. do what your hostage—takers tell you. be strong. you are heroes. the whole country is with you and everyone else who is being held hostage. everybody loves you. we don't know all of the children taken hostage, but along with ariel and kfir we know of 12—year—old erez and his sister sahar, and sisters raz and aviv, who are five and three. as israeli air strikes flatten buildings in gaza nobody knows what's happening to them. and now the lives of palestinian children are also being taken and torn apart. caroline hawley, bbc news. let's look at some other news at this hour. london luton airport has suspended all flights until 12pm local time on wednesday after a fire broke out at a car park. the blaze took hold in the terminal car park 2 on tuesday evening ataround 9:00. part of the building later collapsed. five people have been treated for smoke inhalation. the airport has asked passengers on flights due to leave luton to stay away. the cause of the fire is not yet known. the car park was only completed recently. this passenger's plane had just touched down when the fire broke out. as we came out of the airport terminal building, they look like to be a bit of a fire going on in the top flooring car park one. it didn't look that bad initially and did look a little bit strange, a car on fire, but suddenly there was an explosion and there was a massive doubt of flame shot across the car park like a flamethrower. and then cars which is exploding, that every few minutes you just got another one and another explosion and another explosion, so, obviously, the airport staff moved us all back away but even standing in front of the airport terminal building at arrivals, you could still feel the heat coming off the top building. the airport closure has had an effect on hundreds of passengers. some have been unable to get a flight out — and others, who were flying in to luton, were diverted to stansted, and then transferred to luton by taxi. but roads around the airport were closed, and they've been unable to access their vehicles in car parks, even those not affected by the fire. so, we got told on the plane that you could go into luton airport, and we were going to stansted and everyone would look after when we got there. we got there, gave us our bags and that was it. we were left stranded. spoke to this couple here, they were getting a cab down and wejumped in here, they were getting a cab down and we jumped in the here, they were getting a cab down and wejumped in the cab and gotjumped on the roundabout and that was it! obviously i feel bad for people because they lost their car and i still don't know if my car is all right because the car park is collapsed. terminal 2, i believe has, and i'm in terminal 1, so believe has, and i'm in terminal1, so i believe has, and i'm in terminal 1, so i don't know what happened with my car. hopefully, i will come back tomorrow and it will be there. fingers crossed! live now to london luton airport and our correspondent greg mckenzie. it sounds like mayhem there at the moment. what is the latest? it was, sally. the latest is the fire took place at 8:50 pm last night, many were already on the runway, on planes and was simply disembarked and told to evacuate the station. the airport behind me, still fire engines are there at the scene. the smoker stopped. the smoke stopped about an hour ago. their cars in the car park was still on fire up to an hour ago and ultimately, there are no more passengers in the airport. they have all been taken out and some are stranded on neighbouring roads, trying to find local hotels, all the hotels are fully booked. many sitting in the reception areas, just trying to keep warm with their children and their luggage. many of those now being told their flights have been diverted to other airports are now having to get to places like sta nsted to are now having to get to places like stansted to get their flight later today. as of now, the airport has confirmed that there will be no flights leaving or arriving luton airport until at least midday. so many questions, greg, not least what started the fire in the first place? we are hearing it is quite a newly built car park? it is quite a newly built car ark? , ,., it is quite a newly built car ark? , ., park? yes, some are speculating, - park? yes, some are speculating, we - park? yes, some are. speculating, we spoke park? yes, some are - speculating, we spoke to some staff members, and obviously they did not want to give their names, but they believe it was an suv range rover type vehicle that quarter light first, that then exploded and then set other cars alight. there is vision of electrical explosions followed by mushroom cloud explosions and the smoke was filling the air at luton way until the wee hours until the morning, and we could smell the smoke coming from over the runway behind us into the airport itself. now, unfortunately, no more smoke. it looks like it is out, albeit people have been injured for smoke inhalation, that includes five firefighters. ultimately there is an investigation as to why and how this fire was able to spread so quickly in such a new car park. to spread so quickly in such a new car park-— to spread so quickly in such a new car park. absolutely. thank ou ve new car park. absolutely. thank you very much _ new car park. absolutely. thank you very much indeed. - new car park. absolutely. thank you very much indeed. the - you very much indeed. the advice is that if you are planning to travel from luton today, many, many flights have been cancelled right through until 12 noon later. you have to check with your airline, etc, the usual things you have to do in the circumstances. and this is the scene at gaza this morning. a night of many missiles. the death the whole for israel has reached 1201 more than 900 have been killed in gaza since the attacks took place on saturday — — the death toll. the un is saying something like 2600 in gaza have been displaced, due to the israeli air strikes, another day beginning in gaza, whether humanitarian crisis is deepening. stay with us here on bbc news. the top business stories are next. see you in a moment. hello there. so far this october, we've been building in some pretty big contrasts in terms of rainfall. parts of the south haven't even had a single drop of rain yet, whereas across northern scotland, aboyne in aberdeenshire, we've already had 113 millimetres of rain. that's already more than an average 0ctober. and of course, we're only a third of the way through the month. then we had these temperature contrasts on tuesday — 26 degrees in writtle near chelmsford in essex, just 13 in lerwick, behind a cold front across the far north of scotland. and over the next few days, as that cold front pushes its way gradually southwards, we are going to see those temperatures drop away. and certainly by the time we get to the weekend, we'll all be feeling as if autumn has firmly arrived. mind you, for some of us, the temperatures will be dropping as we look at the weather into wednesday. here's our cold front, bringing some rain southwards, clearing away from scotland and northern ireland, so the flood warnings continuing to fall here. but we've got the rain heading in across parts of england and wales. a mild start to the day on wednesday here. a much colder start, though, in scotland, with temperatures down into low single figures in the countryside. now, we've got this band of rain, this cold front, with us through the day on wednesday, some particularly heavy rain across the hills of mid wales. could bring one or two impacts here. some wet weather as well for the midlands and parts of east anglia for much of the day. to the south of our front, it's another warm day, with temperatures again reaching the 20s. otherwise, for scotland, northern ireland, northern england, those temperatures will be dropping away. and it will be blustery for the far north of scotland too, gusts reaching 60 miles/hour, driving in plenty of showers here. now, heading through wednesday night and into thursday, our weather front sinks across into southern parts of england. it's very weak by this stage, just a few patches of rain. temperatures for most of us much closer to the october average. we still have some heat hanging on across the very far south of england. and for a time on friday, we actually get a zone of warmer air pushing back northwards. but with that heavy rain for england and wales, scotland and northern ireland, a day of sunshine and blustery showers. so the cool weather continues across these northern areas. across the south, more of us will see temperatures climbing back into the high teens to low 20s. but that won't last. into the weekend, it will cool down properly, with temperatures around about 10 to 1a degrees. and for the mountains of northern scotland, on saturday, it'll be cold enough for a little bit of snow over the very mountain tops. that's the latest. live from london, this is bbc news. the global economy is limping on — a warning from the imf as g20 finance ministers meet today in marrakech. the founder of ftx faced his ex—girlfriend in court — as the trial of the crypto king sam bankman—fried continues in new york. and how a once uncool orthopaedic shoe brand is now worth billions. the global economy is limping along, not sprinting. that's according to the international monetary fund's
