air of the ferocity of the attack by hamas gunmen on southern israel last saturday. the israeli defence forces have today been recovering the bodies of civilians, including babies, from a rural community, just a mile from the border with gaza. whole families are reported to have been killed. israeli soldiers on the ground have described what they've seen as a massacre. tonight we'll hear burning homes and killing families according to the soldiers. as it took so long to secure the kibbutz the army couldn't recover all the civilian dead until this morning. these are the bodies of kfar aza israeli troops are thinking of what is next, perhaps a ground invasion of gaza. it was tough enough for the israelis to come in to recapture this area, these small border communities. it is a different order of military challenge to cross the wire, to get into gaza, potentially to fight house to house at a time when hamas will have made its plans and will be waiting. some of these men are moving north in case war starts with hezbollah, the powerful lebanese militia backed by iran. what happened here is why israel is shaken to its core, wyatt insists it must break hamas and it points to the danger and uncertainty ahead. i'm joined now by our international editor, jeremy bowen, who's in the city of ashkelon in southern israel. as we were coming on air we were getting details of what is being described as a massacre in this kibbutz. what more do you have? it seems pretty clear there was a mass occur because, as i said in the army didn't get in there, the israeli army didn't even start to try to regain the area for 12 hours after hamas got in there, so basically they could rampage around. senior officers there told me the kibbutz civilian guard, which was composed of people with military experience, that they fought, they tried to fight back, but there were not many of them and they were killed and those bodies were among those recovered today. outside, as you saw in the piece, there was a woman who was under a purple sleeping bag. one of the soldiers said to me that, an officer said to me that she had been beheaded. i did not move the covering to see if he was telling the truth, but she was undoubtedly killed in the front garden of her own house, so i think the word massacre is appropriate to what happened there. what struck me in kfar aza is that it really does sum up kfar aza is that it really does sum up all the reasons why israelis are so shocked, traumatised, why they are so angry, why they want notjust revenge, but the government wants to change the strategic equation in gaza so hamas can't do anything like this again. but this is the middle east, it is a volatile area, and the way ahead is not smooth for anybody. indeed, ok, jeremy bowen, reporting for us, thank you. palestinian health officials say the number of people killed by retaliatory israeli rocket attacks in gaza has now risen to at least 830, with well over 4,000 injured. the united nations says israel's complete siege of the territory announced yesterday, deprives civilians of goods essential for their survival and breaks international humanitarian law. the gaza strip, or simply gaza, is palestinian territory with israel on its northern border and egypt to the south. it's a tiny sliver of land, when you consider the number of people living there. 2.3 million in an area just 25 km long and 10 km wide. the largest settlement is gaza city. the ruling authority is the militant group, hamas, in control since 2007. it's committed to israel's destruction, hoping to create an islamic state. the uk has detonated hamas as a terror organization, but it's israel that controls gaza's airspace, shoreline the un says 80% of gaza's population survives on international aid, human rights watch has called gaza an open—air prison. israeli rockets can cause mass casualties in the densely populated territory, and the war and of back streets will make any israeli defense force ground operation extremely difficult. it's believed hamas has built a vast network of tunnels like these, in which gunmen can hide and be re—supplied with weapons. if israel decides to cross the border, the fighting will be bloody and intense. you get a real sense of how difficult that operation will be. the bbc has a rare insight into the situation on the ground in gaza, with our correspondent, rushdi abualouf. he's lived there his entire life. it's too dangerous for rushdi to report live for us this evening , so he's just this update. we can see the scale of destruction in this neighbourhood. it was targeted yesterday. many buildings were destroyed, an ii—storey building was knocked down two days ago but the destruction in this area has been targeted last night. israel killed at least 260 people there. the attackers then continued their rampage into the surrounding villages. and middle east correspondent lucy williamson has been to re'im to hear the testimony of saturday, in the evening. ahmed says he's worried for the rest of his extended family with so many airstrikes. as you can imagine, the situation there is not easy to really find out how people were killed, or whether they are under the rubble, or whether they are still alive. well, for so many people in this country, these horrors feel like they're being played out much closer than in a distant land. and even if they don't have direct ties to the victims, in many cases, it's still having an impact on daily life. many britishjews have talked of a profound sense of connection tojews in pain, living a nightmare. she's heard nothing from her parents since this israeli community was attacked and burnt to the ground, where entire families were gunned down and from which dozens have gone billion boost to the economy. our sports editor, dan roan, reports. the host for the uefa euro 2028 is united kingdom and the republic of ireland. it felt a formality, but finally it was official confirmation that the five nations behind this bid would stage the biggest sports event since london 2012. the face of today's presentation telling me just how much it meant. having a major tournament
